Diner Reviews
  • "This place has exceptional Greek food with a long list of traditional favorites."

  • "My fish dish was not as flavorful as my first few visits to this Greek restaurant. The octopus was superb, don't forget to order it! Great wine suggestions at the bar. Great ambiance for upscale dining or a special occasion."

  • "I visited here twice, once for business dinner, another with my son, his soccer teammate and his Greek food lover dad. Always excellent service, great food and reasonable cost. Never missed our expectation. Hidden treasure in Albany."

  • "Nice place to dine. The souvlaki is great, and we also love the fresh fish choices, the Greek wines, the vegetable sides and salads-to-share. We tend to eat late; at 9:00 pm the restaurant felt vibrant. Good service."

  • "Some of the foods taste really good, some are just hearty and filling, but the menu has good variety in a nice way. Much that seems authentic."

  • "The wait staff was great in recommending dishes. My brazed lamb shank was very flavorful and it came in a very generous portion. I took home a hefty portion. The Greek salad was great, especially when it was combined with the stack of pita bread and dipping sauces. Our dining companions were enthralled with their dishes too. The wines were also very good and the deserts were out of this world. My wife's seafood/pasta dish was flavorful, but didn't have much seafood. - stick with the items that are recommended and you can't go wrong. The best part of the meal for me was that the food came out surprisingly hot from the kitchen, and it stayed hot until I was done eating.(Heated plates?) O.T. SHOULD GIVE MORE ROOM FOR COMMENTS"

  • "My 2nd visit here when visiting family in Albany. A very good Greek restaurant that shines among others I encounter in my travels. Service is also consistently good and pleasant. The dip selections as one of your starters are a must. And I say "starters" as this is one restaurant where a few are in order when dining with some friends or family, or when you prefer tapas sharing or such. The entrees in our party of 6 were ALL very good - flavor and all. I had the veal in a pot (I forgot the exact name) - so flavorful. You will not be disappointed."

  • "the salad I ordered had sooo many onions, I considered it way too much. it was probably four times more onions then I would ever eat on a salad..I ordered spanakopita. When I asked the waitress if it came with anything, she said no. When the meal arrived, there was a vegetable, (white) rice, which I don't eat and a small potato. I would rather have something different ...but because she said it came with nothing else, I wasn't able to ask for something different. The quality of the food was very good, although I've had a lot of spanakopita from many different restaurants in the area and I didn't think the thickness was very generous and the portion size was small. my friends meal was very good."

  • "We have been to Athos several times now, all for special occasions. Each time the service was impeccable and the food and beverage of extremely high quality. I finally tried a dish other than lamb, a fresh red snapper, filleted table side and what a treat. Don't skip the Baklava cheescake with an extra serving of top notch Baklava to share with your special someone!"

  • "This restaurant keeps getting better and better each time. Its as authentic Greek as you can get here in the states with an assortment of traditional Greek dishes, and then what I love which is the fresh fish which is grilled, deboned and seasoned with a hit of lemon and oil - it is just divine. This is the type of dining that you experience in Greece or Italy - where the server brings out an assortment of fresh fish and you select the fish you'd like and they cook to order. There are no heavy sauces to mask the wonderful freshness and flavor; The wine list is lovely with very nice Grecian choices - I chose the Santorini which was fresh and crisp and perfect with my meal."

  • "we have eaten here several times previous. This time, there were several [not just one] instances in which other elements of the dish should have been served - and either had to be asked for or reminded - while the core dish got cold. we love Athos - we WILL be back, but will request not this server. [and it was Valentine's Day - sort of a special day]"

  • "Amazing food. Amazing service. Amazing people. I'm definitely coming back!"

  • "We picked Athos because of excellent reviews and were not disappointed. There was a private party in the bar area, but that did not interfere at all with our experience in the restaurant. The service communicates a friendly family feel - warm and unobtrusive - good pacing for our leisurely meal before dropping a friend at a hotel near the airport. We chose traditional Greek favorites and they were all above par."

  • "My husband loves good fish, and it's hard to find, also I like Mediterranean food so we chose Athos. He enjoyed his bronzini and while I don't particularly like fish I do like starch and comfort food so I enjoyed the moussaka. The food was excellent and the restaurant is very attractive however I don't enjoy sitting at a table for two that is placed closely in a row of other tables-for-two. You cannot help overhearing the two couples next to you and you're also aware that they can hear everything you are saying. Also one of the two people sees only the wall in front of them. The service was excellent and the fish was presented perfectly. My salad was fresh and the accompaniments tasty. I would recommend Athos to my friends."

  • "Everything from appetizers and wine selection to entrees and dessert were beautifully prepared and delicious. One can get as dressy as they wish to dine here. The service was prompt and attentive. There was a band playing at the bar-side of the restaurant which is separate from the main dining room. It's really all about the food!"

  • "We've eaten at Athos a number of times and have always enjoyed the experience. Everything about the restaurant is pleasant: the waitstaff, food, and ambiance."

  • "We've eaten in both the bar and the dining room. The bar is casual and friendly. The Hostess and wait staff accommodating and friendly. The dining room is beautifully appointed, beautifully lit and makes you want to be dressed up although not necessary. What restaurants used to be like before the advent of casual chain restaurants. Food is always nicely presented and delicious.."

  • "We have dined here many times and decided to take advantage of their special menu during restaurant week. We got a great table for two and ordered poached salmon over linguine and spinach rollatini. It was excellent and the food came out quickly. Our server was Danielle, and she was both friendly and efficient, we will request her again. We love the variety of food on their menu and will continue to frequent this restaurant."

  • "A group of us went to the restaurant during restaurant week. We ordered dinners of the $20.14 menu as well as a bunch of appetizers. We were all very impressed with our food and the server was very knowledgeable about the different foods and wines/beers. I would recommend Athos and will be going back again."

  • "We elected to choose from the restaurant week menu. The food was good, however, I found I liked the choices on the regular menu better. Having eaten at Athos before, we will definitely return. We like to have an after dinner drink at the bar. Found it to be a friendly atmosphere and the drinks very good, especially the martinis."

  • "The food, service and atmosphere are impressive. Decor is tasteful and inviting. Appetizers were delicious. Get the calamari, which is one of many gluten free options, and is light and tasty. Too full for dessert, but the birthday girl had some sort of donuts that she raved about. Coffee, even the decaf, is perfect ending to a lovely evening. We'll return for the nights featuring the traditional dancing."

  • "In area that is not strong for good ethnic food variety,Athos provides top quality Greek specialities and a nice selection of Greek or nearby regional wines.Service always good and the ambience suitable for any occasion. Try Athos, you'll be pleased."

  • "When dining out on New Years Eve, we tend to start out with lower expectations, but the staff at Athos handled a full restaurant without missing a beat. The food was amazing, and the wait staff was remarkable. This truly is one of the best restaurants in the Capital District. While much less pretentious than the other top contenders it is definitely on par with food and service."

  • "My wife and I took our college-aged son and his girlfriend for a nice evening out on New Year's Eve. We had been to Athos before, so we knew it would be a great time. We weren't disappointed. Food was top notch. We started with the Saganaki...Greek cheese served flambe. We shared a bottle of Greek wine (Merlot) that was a perfectly subtle complement to everything we ate. I had the chicken Sta Karvouna...a marinated whole fillet chicken...it was tender and tasty and the lemon potato served with it was just right. My wife had a tender veal dish, my son had pistachio crusted salmon and his girlfriend had the moussaka. I'm getting hungry describing it. The baklava cheesecake was a memorable cap to a nice evening."
