- Fantastic FoodCamilleVIPDined on 11/19/2014We have been to most of the best restaurants in NY, having tried Per Se, Masa, Ai Fiori, Blanca, Torrisi, Eleven Madison, Marea, and many others, but we think Atera is the new best. We enjoy all the dishes except the chicken and shrimp dumpling which is bland in both taste and texture. If their menu is always changing, we definitely consider to go back. The service man was very warm and nice at the door, but he changed his attitude/manner noticeably during the course. We don't know why, but hopefully it's not because he heard we came to the restaurants by subway. He said he would call a taxi for us after dinner, but it wasn't there. whatever it is, hope it won't happen next time.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Atera ReviewSTA1Dined on 11/13/2014A very, very disappointing dining experience. The table was booked to celebrate my partner's 30th birthday. The red wine was served chilled. We asked for the wine to be warmed and also asked for another bottle of the same wine to be removed from the celler to bring it to room termperature as we would order another one in due course. Neither of these things were done and we were initially told that chilled red wine (Rioja) was acceptable and that they did things differently. Indeed they do, no other competant restaurantor would serve chilled red Rioja. Most of the menu (20 courses or so) was seafood based. Much of it was raw. Given the limited appeal of such a choice, having that dominate the menu was unwise. Some of it was indebile (for example, the sea urchin). Another issue is that a menu is not provided (including at the time of eating) so one has no idea of the type of food that will be served and ordering wine is tricky as you cannot attempt to match it to the courses or know what is up-coming. When we raised these issues, the management dealt with it extremley rudely. Having told my partner that they were satisfied with the dining experienc which had been provided, they then re-presented the bill, entirely unamended. We asked to speak to someone senior, but there was a significant delay and it then became apparent that this delay was used to charge the card which I had used to secure the booking. All in a terrible experience, unbecoming of a supposedly 2 star Michelin restaurant. As experienced diners in such establishemnts, we live in the UK, and have eaten in plenty of Michelin starred restuarants there and elsewhere around the world, this is certainly the worst meal and worst hospitality I have ever encounted. On a final note, we asked for someone to call us to discuss the matter - and we were told that the proprietor would call the falling day - we are still waiting...

The space's orientation around the stage of its kitchen--where the diners are spectators, the servers are most certainly actors, the chefs producers and directors--coerce each patron into a focus on food and its derivative pleasure. As such, the diner may participate in a singular way the experience of Mr. Lightner's incredible vision, conceived brilliantly, executed perfectly. The wine list is spectacular, is priced very fairly when measured against its peers, and for those especially knowledgeable about wine, steals abound. I went alone but the kitchen view where I could follow the assembly of the dishes kept me busy. It was a bit chilly but was offered a pashmina (very unusual for a man but it worked). I have to say, while the service was impeccable at EMP, the food I most remember and now long for was from Atera. Beautiful decor, all the dishes prepared with amazing attention to detail. Flavors really well executed. While all seats are bar stools, they seemed comfortable enough for the 3 hour service. I also loved that everyone seemed to be having fun. Unfortunately it just wasn't that good. None of the food was seasoned properly, if at all, and that's basic stuff. It's hard to take a place like this seriously when they don't get the basics right. As we were leaving I saw the cooks start to sear a duck breast for the next seating, which he wouldn't be serving for another two and a half hours...So if you've got money to burn and want a fun night but don't care about amazing food, go. Chefs are using slightly less high tech but focus more on ingredients, presentation has become more mature. Smoking a substantial part of the technology kit giving ingredients characteristic taste. Service knows every detail of any dish, and if not, they would find out in no time. Choice of wine is great, but given the complex mix of dishes it is a bit tricky to chose the right wine. Wine pairing is offering too many different drinks (more than a dozen), and just one type of wine is also not right. Maybe the very experienced wine director could come up with a more focused pairing (3-4 wines or so).Special Features:

The food is both experimental and familiar with bold and interesting flavors that are surprisingly light and well balanced. Many of the courses had a Japanese feel to them. There is no dress code (although most men wore shirts) and the atmosphere is casual with a 70's rock sound track - this really takes away the formality. It take around two hours, so it doesn't feel like a marathon. Would recommend for anyone who wants fine dining without the old-world feel of many New York restaurants. Staff are professional and efficient and do not get overly 'involved' with you. It also helps if you will eat everything.Special Features:

But if you look for the address you will be greeted warmly into a tiny lobby. If you are early you will be taken by elevator to a very charming and beautifully decorated intimate bar. When they are ready to seat you they will escort you to the dining area where you will not see tables and chairs, but U-shaped community seating facing the open kitchen. There were six chefs preparing beautiful dishes served by five cordial, professional and well informed men in suits. The food was creative and delicious.
