Diner Reviews
  • "We arrived early and were instantly taken care of by our lovely waitress. The moment we sat down we felt like we were the only couple there. The food was outstanding so imaginative. And thought provoking. I was like a little child discovering treasures. The wine list was like Un other than I had seen. I would recommend everyone who has a passion for food and drink to go here. As we're from Scotland the meal came to the same amount for 12 courses as we would pay for 7 in a one star restaurant which is amazing value for money. We will definitely going back next we visit San Francisco."

  • "Absolutely stunning and incredible tasting menu. The poetic approach to a menu was even more uniquely followed by the presentation of food. The experience was incredible. We will definitely return next season for the next menu."

  • "The food was good and the service was great. It might be better if you go when the restaurant is less crowded. We ended up having empty water glasses for 30 mins and no one came to refill the water until we requested it. (and they pull the wrong water too) But overall, the food was well presented and very creative. The wine pairing with the food was excellent. However, the food stands alone will be just great. I would come back but might prefer other restaurants with the same price level."

  • "The food is excellent and the service is top notch! Our servers explained every aspect of the 25 courses (think that was the final count) and seemed to have every answer to our own questions. We paired our meal with the wine/sake pairing and we enjoyed every pairing. The food not only tastes phenomenal, but it looks like a work of art on the plate. I felt guilty eating some of the dishes they looked so nice. We sat near the kitchen and were able to see them preparing our meal. Oddly, the kitchen was practically silent the entire time, yet they were pushing out courses all night. We definitely stated into the kitchen to watch them silently at work. We definitely will be coming back!"

  • "The food is outstanding, innovative, and comforting. In my opinion, better than the 3 star restaurants of the region. Highly recommended. Chef Crenn is a very talented and meticulous cook. Cannot wait to return."

  • "First time at a restaurant of this caliber and I think I picked the right one to go to! They had so many things that were amazing and the wine pairing with it could not have been better. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to have an experience and not just a meal."

  • "Chef Dominique Crenn really does a marvelous tasting course. I've been to Saison and French Laundry and Crenn is better than French Laundry and up there with Saison. Will definitely fly back to SF again to go to her place again."

  • "Comparable to the likes of French Laundry, Gary Danko, La Folie etc."

  • "Perhaps the best meal of my life. Intriguing presentation with incredible flavor. Impeccable service. Dominique came to all tables. This is premier dining."

  • "Everything tasted as great as it looked and smelled .... from the first mouthful of bursting flavors to the last sweet surprise. Highlights were the uni custard, squid, french onion soup, bird's nest with duck consommé, adult cereal, honeycomb dessert."

  • "We went to four Michelen starred restaurants on this trip to San Fran. Atelier clearly was the best. From start to dazzling finish, it was truly spectacular. I will be back. It is ideal for a very special occasion. The price point is high, but what you get for it is more than worthwhile. Awesome."

  • "The food is beautiful, flavorful and expressed creatively and uniquely. Chef Crenn is a true artist and she compromises nothing in the way of flavor to create this gorgeous food. The wine pairings which were meant not only to "work" with a course but designed to sear a memory of the wine with each course as they should. We were ever drinking sherry mid menu- bravo! Go to Atelier Crenn soon and don't feel you need to save it for an anniversary or a birthday this year...just go for dinner mid week and treat yourself and some great company to a unforgettable meal because you deserve it and its worth every penny. You will be grateful you live in San Francisco beside this incredible chef."

  • "Some dishes were a little difficult to figure out. Even so, they were still very well prepared. One exception was an abalone dish with a yuzu foam --the abalone was a little tough, which is only noticeable after having a tender abalone steak at Saison recently. Others dishes were transcendent, such as the seeds and grains dish, which combined umami with salty, earthy, tender, and crunchy all at once with a sense of great nostalgia. Texture balance was a definite theme. The constructions are wonderful to discover. Big highlight were the dessert rounds. The final dessert course incorporated honey in every conceivable way and was a great finish. It's all about whimsy, and the creative excitement makes it well worth the ride."

  • "Excellent service & serene atmosphere provide a perfect background to 17course Grand Tasting menu. 4hrs simply flew by. Dominique Crenn is a brilliant chef & I appreciated her coming to greet the guests and discuss particular dishes& philosophy behind them. Our courses came out in test tubes, sea shells, honeycomb, on eucalyptus branches.....wonderful! Unexpected pairings of flavors & textures & poetic descriptions& beautiful plating kept all five of my senses entertained. If I had to choose my favorite, it'd be Ode to Honey desert ....it simply left me speechless. It took me back to childhood days where whatever you had going on could be fixed with some honey&chamomile tea. My compliments to the chef& entire staff !"

  • "The food was put together so elegantly, it sometimes took us a few minutes before enjoying. The poem was exquisite and Chef Crenn was nice enough to take a picture with us in her kitchen. We were stuff by the end of dessert. It was difficult for our party of three to agree on a favorite dish. One of my friends actually thought it was better than the French Laundry. I would say that it is just as good and definitely more modern. I will definitely be back!"

  • "Everything about my experience at Atelier Crenn was outstanding. The cuisine was unique, delicious, and incredibly inventive. Service was personal, attentive, and friendly without being obsequious or too constant. The wine pairings were brilliant and added a depth and complexity to an already delightful meal."

  • "The tasting we had at Atelier Crenn was like no food experience I have had. All the sense except hearing are tantalized in just the right degree. The various wonderful creations were between lovely melodies and grand symphonies of taste. All the individual flavors continued for long moments after each dish was finished. I cannot thank Dominique Crenn and her team enough for such a wonderful experience, definitely the highlight of our weeklong vacation here in the Bay area."

  • "Pretty incredible dining experience. Innovative and well thought out in both taste and execution. Despite the cost, it was worth it. Should make it clear that Fri and Sat night the 22 course menu is the only option. It's worth the money and deserves the 2 Michelin stars."

  • "This was by far the best meal I've ever had. We were greeted by an extremely gracious host, and treated to a really great 23 course dinner. The wine list was impeccable, and the pairings amazing!"

  • "A couple of the dishes were left unfinished (guinea hen was dry, pickled mushrooms were a bit too sour for my tastes) but just about everything else was delicious, creative and often whimsically presented. A culinary journey which left me neither bored nor exhausted (nor hungry) unlike some tasting menus. Tables somewhat close together. Looking forward to returning when the season changes."

  • "The only redeeming quality about the restaurant is the presentation of the food. The taste was terrible. Up until I went to Atelier Crenn I have always enjoyed tasting menus. This was honestly the worst meal of my life. My whole party left the restaurant feeling like we got robbed. I would never recommend this place or wish that meal on anyone."

  • "Atelier Crenn is one of the most artistic and innovative restaurants we have had the pleasure of eating at. All of the dishes were plated beautifully and tasted as good as they looked. The best dishes of the night were "Where the broad ocean leans against the Spanish land", "A gentle smell, oceanic, of yummy feeling", and "Feeling of black sand under my toes, I dreamed of". Aside from the food, all of the staff members were incredibly attentive; they were more than happy to share tidbits about the food and wine. Lastly, Chef Crenn stopped to chat with all the diners; something you don't see very often at restaurants. Her welcoming demeanor helped make this meal one of the finest we've ever had."

  • "We chose the shorter of the two menus and got the wine pairings. Atelier is one of the best values in the city. The courses average $13 each and the wine pairings $10 each. The courses are not large, but there's nine of them with eight pairings. Neither of us left hungry. In other restaurants we've been to, often there's unbalanced emphasis on presentation over flavor. Not at Atelier. The attention to detail was astonishing. Some of the courses had over a dozen elements in them and each element by itself was well done. Together, they put together a harmony of flavor, texture and experience that was a delight. The dinner is a story or a poem, written in food. And the artists at Atelier Crenn are very, very, very good at what they do."

  • "The Food was excellent. Chef Dominique Crenn was very Professional and Greeted guests each table. We tried Chef's Grand Tasting Menu. The first course was unbelievable, "Winter has come with its cool breeze". I had been to French Laundry in Yountville and Alinea in Chicago. I found that the service was twice better than French Laundry. The weakest dish I personally thought was the game hen, " Where the wild beauty is sleeping under frozen winter leaves." Every single course was delicious. Thank you Chef Crenn :))))"

  • "Having made the reservations a month before & having been out of the country for the prior three weeks before our dinner at Atelier Crenn, we had forgotten what we signed up for, so when we saw the menu— inscrutable, "poetic," mysterious, we were confused. However, if you surrender yourself to the genius of molecular gastronomy and this insane French woman's good instincts about food(vs poetry), you'll have an experience you won't forget. The food was whimsical, surprising and delightful; the wine pairings were spectacular, especially impressive to consider the thought and planning and good taste that went into the choices. Not a fan of the smokey stuff, myself, I could do without some of the chemistry involved and stick to simpler fare."

  • "Chef Crenn deserves every star. I have never had such a great start to a meal. They knocked it out of the park course after course after course. I was immediately swept into the dream that is eating and delighting in food. The only course that was a complete and utter miss for me was the poultry (can't remember which line of the verse). After getting lost in so many fantastical courses, a piece of poultry (well-seasoned, nothing technically wrong) just hit me the wrong way. Then dessert came and I was swept up in the moment again. It really was an outstanding meal. The wine pairings were not particularly well suited for my palate. None of them really 'worked' for me. They were good, just not great."

  • "The 17+ course Chef tasting menu inspired by the chef written poem was such a unique and interesting experience. It took fine dining to a new level of creativity that was truly impressive and enjoyable. The Chef came around and introduced herself to everyone in the restaurant and chatted at length in some cases, which put an extra special touch on the evening. The food was 195 per person and wine pairings 150 per person. While a few of the pairings were enjoyable, I would not do the wine pairings again. Be sure to ask about pricing, as some things (like champagne at the beginning) seem to be included/complimentary but are not."

  • "Staff and owner are very hospitable. Food presentation is very creative. My guest ordered the wine pairing with regular (not chef's choice) dinner but was not impressed by the choices. I was impressed by sommelier's choice of two wines to serve with my dinner. However, neither of us were "wowed" by the taste of food served. The various courses offered varierty of texture and colorer(lobster particularly) but tastes were not as distnctive as we expected. Perhaps our expectations were too high?"

  • "we have been wanting to go to atelier crenn for years, and our experience on thursday night was worth the wait. we had the smaller of the tasting menus, and each dish was a gem...delicious and beautiful."

  • "The food is poetry and the plating is design! It was truly a unique experience. We enjoyed the Grand Tasting food and wine pairing. Atelier Crenn definitely earns its Michelin stars. It is a good place to enjoy rare wines from around the world as well."

  • "We did the grand tasting, which indeed met the criteria for "grand", with 14 courses. The food was impeccable and presented in astounding fashion. The dishes were unique and perfectly executed. True molecular gastronomy. The stoneware/dishware were gorgeous and added to the drama of each dish. Service was totally fine; not pushy but on pointe. Overall, great experience. Exceptional, innovative cuisine. Love supporting women owned businesses. Would recommend this place more whole-heartedly if it cost a little less or if they improved some of the aesthetic flaws of the space. Needs more bathrooms that are not unisex. Florescent light from open kitchen shines into patrons eyes and furnishings are minimal but lack elegance."
