A word from Assaggi Osteria
Domenico Cornacchia, chef/proprietor of Assaggi Osteria, taps into ages of ancestral Italian cooking each time he steps into his kitchen and brings a rich love of the cuisine that he so skillfully nurtured through the years. “Assaggi means tastings in Italian,” explains Domenico, “The concept of my menu is based on a variety of items that may be ordered in smaller portions.” Before deciding to pursue his dream of operating his own restaurant, Domenico was corporate executive chef and partner at Café Milano, for more than 15 years. His culinary umbrella also covered Café Milano’s two sister restaurants, Sette Bello in Clarendon, VA., and Sette Osteria in Dupont Circle.  For those who love Italian cuisine, Assaggi Osteria features homemade pasta’s, fresh seafood, veal and scrumptious beef. Assaggi Osteria sources whole fresh fish from worldwide sustainable sources, offering the finest bounty the sea has to offer. Produce is purchased from Amish farms and all desserts are homemade.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "A lovely dinner with fabulous service. The food was served hot and delicious. The wine list had some great as well as hard to find wines. We will be going back."

  • "but I didn't. It was O.K. This was my second visit to the restaurant and my impression remains the same. Nice ambiance, but the food is just average. The spaghetti with clams was over-cooked and bland. My friend noticed that her gnocchi looked machine-made. The coffee was better than most."

  • "Assaggi is fast becoming our favorite restaurant! It is easily the very best restaurant in the Virginia suburbs. The menu is diverse and inventive and the food is always a treat."

  • "Assaggi Osteria provides very good food and service. The dinning room itself is nothing special and really needs sound control measures. During a busy Sunday dinner time, it was difficult to hear the person next to me. Forget trying total across the table. Go for the food, not the ambiance."

  • "The brunch choices offer something for everyone, with some great twists on the classics, and as a bonus the regular lunch menu is available too. We had a wonderful family celebration (not a birthday) and were surprised and delighted when the waiter must have overheard and treated us to a special dessert. Always great food -- we will keep coming back!"

  • "Always enjoy Assaggi. The $14 lunch cannot be beat."

  • "The food is not first rate, but very good. I do wish the menu would change however - a little variety would be appreciated. The manager/owner is very generous about sharing recipes!"

  • "Had a wonderful lengthy lunch with my girlfriend. We weren't rushed at all and spent 2 1/2 hours getting caught up over a delicious meal. The soup was extremely flavorful and the salad I had with added chicken was perfectly grilled. I will most definitely be back!"

  • "I been there few times and can't wait to go back again !"

  • "This intimate gem has some of the absolute best Italian food in the area and unprecedented service! From beginning to end, we thoroughly enjoyed every dish, and appreciated the knowledgeable, attentive wait staff. The little turkey and pork meat ball appetizer is a "must have", as is the warm, tender mussels swimming in a broth of fennel, dill, saffron and white wine; both just delicious! The veal cheeks were a perfect balance of meat and a little fat, making it extraordinarily tender. The gnocchi was rich and luscious. Homemade strawberry ice cream and Tartufo were both show stoppers. With the beautiful décor, and outstanding food and service, Assaggi Osteria is exactly the kind of dinning experience I expect from a great restaurant!"

  • "As always, the food and service were great. We were here on a Tuesday night, which was osso bucco night. Two of us had the osso bucco and it was excellent - with very large servings. We normally come on weekends and expect the place to be busy. We were surprised, though, to find that the restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night - every bit as busy as it would be on a Saturday night. That made things a bit louder than we were expecting, but still a great dinner."

  • "The food was excellent, but the noise level was disruptive to conversation. The wine list is excellent, but $22 for a glass of Barolo?"

  • "This restaurant is a little hidden, but it's a great little place in McLean. The owner and bar tender are always friendly and the food is always good."

  • "we could tell from the service, the bread that it would be a great restaurant. The entrees and amazing wines only affirmed that."

  • "This was our first visit to Assaggi Osteria, and we enjoyed it very much. It boasts a charming, intimate interior and very efficient wait staff. The menu was varied and interesting, and our dishes were very well conceived and executed. We especially enjoyed our salads, which are often treated as an afterthought in too many restaurants. These were made with very fresh greens and excellent accompaniments. We will definitely return and recommend it to our friends."

  • "I have lived in McLean for 15 years and never been to Assaggi Osteria, but having won a gift certificate gave it a try. I wasn't sure what to expect having read mixed reviews and went hoping my evening didn't reflect many others. I wasn't disappointed. My friend and I had traveled to Italy numerous times and discovered the food to be very authentic traditional Italian. We began with the grilled octopus, which was very good, but a tad on the chewy side. Next, we shared the gnocchi - fabulous, melt in your mouth little pillows of delight. We each had a fish special, black cod and grilled orata - both were superb. Our waiter, Juan was a informative, witty and made the evening perfect. Will definitely return!"

  • "I never give a bad review. This one top it this Valentine's night. We made an 8:45 pm reservation. We were put by the door, a bit tight to get in. Our starters took 45 min, the chestnut soup didn't taste like chestnuts, &the seared scallops were more like chinese fusion, than Italian. Another 1hr for the entrees. My 2 tiny breaded lamb chops had hardly any meat; & my husband's monk fish was probably the only good thing, hence the 2 stars. The Chianti was ok but the Tiramisu was the worst ever-one lady finger with more whipped cream than a bowl of ice cream. We remained polite thru dinner & made friends with our next door neighbors. Our waiter was giving all the ladies a rose & the finale, as we paid, he didn't give me a rose. Never again.."

  • "As I'd read in a previous review the food, the ambiance and the service were all good. Not great but good. However, for the prices, I expected great."

  • "My husband and I both had the special monkfish entree and ate every bite. It was delicious and we would definitely order it again. I also must add that their bread fresh from the oven was the best bread ever! Served with olive oil, warm and crusty bread made it necessary to have more than one piece."

  • "This is my second visit to Assaggi and yet again it delivered!. The quality of the food was outstanding. My waiter was a bit inexperienced and distracted, but I recognize it was a busy night. Overall, food was the best part but service could be improved. All aspects combined, a very good experience. Will come again."

  • "Took friends with us this time. I had the veal cheeks and polenta and they were great. Wige got a type of pasta she had never had before with a ragu, and it was super as well. Guests enjoyed meal thoroughly also."

  • "Needed a convenient spot in McLean for a business lunch and Assaggi delivered. Everyone was impressed with the food. We happened to dine during restaurant week and got the restaurant week special. Food and service were excellent."

  • "We live nearby and have wanted to try this restaurant for a while. My family of 4 celebrated a special occasion over dinner at this restaurant. Each of the dishes were truly fantastic. This restaurant now jumps into my top few favorites when I want a white-tablecloth kind of place. On par with the best of restaurants in DC, yet without a stuffy and pretentious air. Remarkable dishes include the bolognese pasta entree, the mushroom ravioli, and the risotto. Our service was very professional, while also courteous. Good suggestion on wine. All around, great experience. We will be back much more frequently."

  • "This is a lovely little restaurant with attentive wait staff and fairly long list of interesting food choices. Start with fantastic, crusty bread baked in-house and served with a strong, delicious olive oil. A restaurant week mushroom and barley appetizer was tasty but too salty. Home made pasta selections are generously sized. Veal ragu with pici pasta was good, but also a bit over-salted. Hubby had orecchiette with Italian sausage and broccoli. He liked it; I felt sausage should be bite size, not mere crumbles. Desserts were OK:: sponge cake with vanilla gelatto was pleasant but nothing special. Chocolate tartuffo was tastier but still no wow factor. Overall, above average food, nice presentation; we'll go back to try more."

  • "The atmosphere is understated and relatively quiet. The tables are not too close together. The menu is not complicated. All of these things I like. But the main thing is the FOOD. My wife and I think of Assaggi first when we consider going out for dinner."

  • "This is such a nice restaurant for a quiet meal with two or more people. they are very accommodating and will adjust menu items to suit your particular tastes. I will return to this gem of a restaurant"

  • "Went for Winter Restaurant Week 2014. Food was OK. Location is a little hard to find--small sign."

  • "My husband and I came out for Restaurant Week and had a very good experience. We were seated right away and the service was excellent. All of the food was wonderful, especially the meatballs. My only problem was that the serving size was not enough to satisfy my 6'3" husband, so he had to eat again once we left."

  • "As usuall, the food and wine were excellent. However, we had a large party next to us and it was way too loud. I couldn't hear what my dinner partner was saying. What was supposed to be a quiet dinner to catch up became impossible. I love their food but it just wasn't a pleasant environment."

  • "We all felt like we were dining in Italy! Everyone at our table of 10 enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, good food and attentive waiters. The Tuscan wine selection and an Abruzzo white wine delighted all at the table who had them. The seared tuna steaks enjoyed by 4 guests were a hit. The calamari appetizer was lightly seasoned, the outside crispy and the tasty meat perfectly cooked. The house made pomegranate sorbet proved the perfect light and fruity dessert; but the chocolate truffle was the favorite. We all agreed we would return. The noise level was high but settled down by the time dessert was served as several large parties being accommodated at the same time had departed. Even so, the atmosphere was fun and enjoyable."
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "Maybe because of Restaurant Week ...but our waiter was actually inattentive. For this reason and since the restaurant is not that close to where we reside ...we would not make the effort to go back for another try ."

  • "We went to Assagi for restaurant week as we'd been wanting to try it out but were a little daunted by the prices. This was a great way to try a new place, and both the food and the service were excellent. That said, the non-retsurant week diners got an amuse bouche, and our portions looked a little small in comparison to other diners. It was a 3-course meal, so we left very satisfied, but it was an off touch. We'd definitely go back ands i'm already thinking about the grilled tuna entree."

  • "I had eaten at Assaggi Osteria before and enjoyed it very much. It let our group of 5 down on Friday evening. One entre was three meat balls on spinach, I had the breast of chicken which was very good. I had talked the restaurant up to my friends and feel it let us down. Why restaurants participate in Restaurant Week and don't do a meal that will bring you back again is beyond me."
    Dined on 1/17/2014
  • "This restaurant delivers great food; soups that are delectably creamy and flavorful, salads with impeccable dressings that are filling but not heavy and combinations of entree ingredients that marry beautifully. I will definitely be returning in the near future!"

  • "Many menu items were new to us, so we explored and greatly enjoyed the discoveries. I don't know enough to evaluate the entire menu--which appears to be quite diverse--but one will do well to start with favorite ingredients (salmon, beef, mushrooms....) and select attractive preparation. This worked very well for us.. There appeared to be a variety of other diners--office workers, shoppers, couples--nd everybody looked happy."

  • "I have been to Assaggi Osteria many times before, the food is very good and the service usually good too, but the service this last Tuesday was bad, unlike our past experiences there. The waiter seemed hurried, the main course was brought in before we had finished appetizers (barely mid-way through them), the servers just stood there for a few moments holding the plates for our party of four, than marched back to the kitchen. Later, we were kept waitingt for the main course. Great food, as usual. The Assaggi is one of my favorite restaurants in this area, been there many times and always had good service. I am willing to go back once more, maybe this was a bad night, but if the service does not improve, that will be it."
