Domenico Cornacchia, chef/proprietor of Assaggi Osteria, taps into ages of ancestral Italian cooking each time he steps into his kitchen and brings a rich love of the cuisine that he so skillfully nurtured through the years. “Assaggi means tastings in Italian,” explains Domenico, “The concept of my menu is based on a variety of items that may be ordered in smaller portions.” Before deciding to pursue his dream of operating his own restaurant, Domenico was corporate executive chef and partner at Café Milano, for more than 15 years. His culinary umbrella also covered Café Milano’s two sister restaurants, Sette Bello in Clarendon, VA., and Sette Osteria in Dupont Circle.  For those who love Italian cuisine, Assaggi Osteria features homemade pasta’s, fresh seafood, veal and scrumptious beef. Assaggi Osteria sources whole fresh fish from worldwide sustainable sources,offering the finest bounty the sea has to offer. Produce is purchased from Amish farms and all desserts are homemade.Continued

  • "We ordered one veal dish and one sea bass. The veal was not good at all. It was tough and the taste was not good. The Sea Bass was excellent (5 stars). The server brought a replacement dish of pasta with meat (garganelli) that was very good. The wine the server recommended was very good. It was just surprising to have had a dish that was so bad in this lovely restaurant. Overall, however,it was a nice experience and an enjoyable evening."

  • "The food tasted very good. However I wont be coming back due to the service. The waiter or what seemed to be the manager sat us at a corner table near the entrance. I asked if we could move to another table (which shouldn't have been a problem since it was a Sunday night and only a few tables were being occupied). He chuckled and seemed irritated then finally sat us down. Another waiter came to take our order but was very rude in his mannerism. On top of that he couldn't even crack a smile. While the food was good, I could have just as well gone to another restaurant that I know of that's in the area with similar dishes and wonderful customer service."

  • "It had been a while since my husband and I gone out for fine Italian dining, and this was our first time here. Assagi Osteria was a pleasant reminder of why Italy boasts one of the world's greatest cuisines. The food and service were excellent; and looking around at the young and old, the families and the friends, the tables for six and the tables for two, everyone was was smiling and relaxing and enjoying a wonderful meal."

  • "The first time I went to this restaurant, I was really taken by the quality of the food, great wine, service, and ambiance. I returned a second time, and while the wine was still wonderful, it was quite noisy, the gnochi overly peppered, and an inattentive waiter who either didn't understand English well or was unaware that I was asking for alternative pasta type in a whole wheat penne and vegetable dish."

  • "Visited this restaurant because I had won a gift certificate for it. The place was surprisingly large---I was glad we were seated off the main dining room as it was a bit more quiet there. The wine list seemed extensive and was a bit on the pricy side. The food was excellent (I had steak; my husband the spaghetti and clams). It did take a little longer than normal, however, to get our order taken, etc. And, at times, the server seemed a bit befuddled. I'm not sure if he was new or just had too many tables."

  • "We ordered 2 starters, yet only got one. I speak clearly... the waiter just wasn't paying attention and had an attitude. We ordered wine from the house menu where you can choose the amount. We paid for one step below a full bottle, yet basically were given one glass of wine each. I routinely order 750ml bottles and know how many glasses/sips to expect, they were very stingy. Both main courses were extremely salty and small, one was otherwise good(spaghetti w-clams), the other was awful-worst pesto I've ever had. They served 3 slices of bread with the meal & meant it. There was no pepper on the table, none was offered, when we asked it took a while. All told the meal was over $100 and was worth less than half that in my opinion."

  • "For the second time in our last two visits, we finally, after more than 15 min., had to ask the maître 'd for a waiter. Our dinner was not served until 1 hour and 15 minutes after being seated, all the while other patrons who arrived after us had been served and left. We had ordered the lobster special and it consisted of no more than four bites of lobster. All of this plus a bill of over $90 for two people. I want to like Assaggi, but they make it very difficult."

  • "We were seated at a nice private table. We went to celebrate a birthday, and the owner made sure we got a dessert with a candle in it. I had told them we had a birthday to celebrate, but they didn't do anything when the desserts we ordered came out. They then brought an additional dessert with the candle in it...but we were charged for it. At $8.00 a dessert we didn't need three! We both ordered the lobster grilled with pasta. It was good, but we were still hungry after. The bread was fantastic and the clientele is what we expect and want in a restaurant. I guess for the expensive price of this place that's what you get. Don't bring kids - its a nice date night place, but not for children - go to Olive Garden with kiddos."

  • "We wish Giovanni was working more, ever since Francesco (manager)has been working so much at night and Dan the bartender left (we think because of Mr F) it hasn't had the warm friendly feel of before. When we asked what the specials were, we were rudely cut off saying it says Lobster Night on the menu with six different preparations, well what are the 6 preparations????? Food is still good, but for the most part rather abrasive, unfriendly service. We miss the old Assagio and don't go nearly as much as we use to, it use to be our Friday regular spot, we now go a few times a year, so disappointing to us."

  • "We went for the Tuesday night Osso Buco special. Although the meat was tender and plentiful, the sauce was flavorless and the risotto was overcooked. Also, the picture on the website shows what looks like a hearty red sauce with the risotto separate. Well, the sauce was a gray-brown, and the meat and sauce were on top of the risotto. We had the rucola salad, which was almost devoid of the dressing. On the plus side, the bread was good, although they were stingy with it--only three slices for the two of us. The waiter seemed somewhat distracted--he had to come back and double check with us what we had ordered a few times."

  • "Early dinner, 3 people. After 15min, had to ask for water. Had to ask the host to send the waiter over after another 15min to take order. Never checked on us. When I asked for cheese & pepper for my pasta, he leaned all the way across the table & my friend & her plate of food (he was not a small man - his stomach was in her face). My 'bowl' of pasta was the size of teacup. (The others' portions were quite large.) Asked for the dessert menu & he brought 2 not 3, literally tossing them on the table & walking away without saying a word. When we left, I attempted to tell the host there was a problem, and he wouldn't even listen to me - he said he'd address it. How do you address it without knowing what it is? It was an infuriating night."

  • "Although we were seated prompted & asked our preference for water, we received more attention from the busgal than wait staff. The manager was catering personally to the table next to us & it wasn't until after 15 minutes & at least two trips to that table that I was able to get his attention. After that, the service from our waiter (a different person than the one who failed to bring us a wine list) was very good. The special risotta with lobster was significantly light on the lobster, but tasted good. The spaghetti bolognese was very good & a perfect portion. The highlight of the evening was discovering the Falesco Vitiano Rosso Umbria blend (2010) which we immediately purchased at Total Wine after dinner & is now our "house red"!"

  • "We always go to Assaggi's for special occasions. We consider it the best Italian restaurant in the DC Metro area. The food is excellent from the appetizers (especially the calamari and the olives) to the pasta dishes (penne integrali with vegetables, spaghetti with clams) to the desserts (tiramisu, zeppole). The service is impeccable - very professional. The gracious hospitality makes us feel very much at home."

  • "I recently booked a dinner for five on Mother's Day at Assaggi Osteria. My main impression is: they have a nice selection of dishes to pick from but the food was not exceptional. I had the Bronzino fish, which was one of the better dishes and my husband had the veal wrapped in prosciutto, which he said was pretty good. However my two daughters had the veal ravioli and the lobster risotto. I tasted each of them and they were just okay at best. I thought the best part of the meal was the appetizers: the olive medley was good as well as the beef Carpaccio and the prosciutto with mozzarella. Service was slow and they forgot my husband's drink. They also were slow to refill water glasses. Overall a 3 star out of 5 star restaurant. "

  • "Noisy "chow" at fine dining prices....good food served (out of sequence) by an wholly untrained staff.... if you don't mind chasing waiters down (over the noise) to make and correct orders, aren't bothered by asking for routinely provided items like bread & water, are ill troubled by small legion of senior staff (apparently on overhead) hanging out at the front door, this place is ok - but order a stiff drink, it’ll take the edge off when you get the bill."

  • "Our primary complaint is that they brought my wife the wrong dish, after she literally pointed at the dish she wanted on the menu, and then they argued with her about "why don't you want the one we brought you?" On Mother's Day, no less. The restaurant is also *very* loud, to the point we practically had to shout to hear each other, and the tables are very close together, leading to chairs being bumped whenever anyone walks through. The food was made with all fresh ingredients, and it was all cooked perfectly, but it doesn't have much flavor, and there is no salt or pepper on the table. The best item of the day was the wine, an Agliciano, wine on their wine list as the "Barolo of the South". I even bought a bottle of that to go."

  • "When we first discovered this restaurant, we were really impressed. But, the last two experiences have not been very good. The food preparation and taste have not lived up to expectations. One of he most recent dishes, veal stuffed ravioli with veal ragu was nearly tasteless. The "ragu," which, from past experiences at other restaurants, should be very flavorful, was in fact very bland and appeared to be watered down, rather than rich with flavor. So sad because this was a special occasion. "

Food is well prepared and service is good. Only complaint is that it tends to get noisy. Why doesn't restaurants have sound absorbing materials placed around?"
