Diner Reviews
  • "Bar customers spill into dining room. They try to be upscale but pretty difficult in that enviroment"

  • "Our first time dinning at Aspen. Service was excellent. Appetizer fries & calamari excellent. Cauliflower soap outstanding! Some of the entree's were delicious, a couple were just ok. Grilled romaine salad not so good, very soggy. Scallops excellent. Grown up grilled cheese sounded wonderful, but was not; bread was barely toasted. Dessert blueberry crumble was not good; oats weren't cooked & blueberry compote seemed canned & came to table extremely hot in spots, microwaved?. Crème brulee was good with the exception of chocolate sauce on top, kind of ruined it. Carmel gelato excellent. Atmosphere nice, but we were seated in back corner, little disappointing, especially because there were so many other nice tables empty when we arrived."

  • "Aspen had a very nice selection of entrees, and the service was excellent. We ordered the salmon and duck breast and both were cooked perfectly. The presentation was lovely, too. This is not a restaurant for every day, way to expensive for that, but for a special celebration it was an excellent choice!"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner in a great atmosphere before a fabulous show at the Kate. Just perfect!"

  • "Something is going on at Aspen, and it hasn't made things better. There has been a change in the bar, and it has gone down one notch. The guy who worked previously, left after the holidays. Also, the food has slipped a little. I has Salmon with lobster hash the other night. There was definitely less lobster in the dish, and I've had it 4 or 5 times. If costs have gone up, add a couple of dollars and retain the quality. Al in all, a little disappointing this time. We'll try the lunch on our next visit."

  • "This was my second visit to Aspen and it again amazed me with their delicious food, martini menu, and service. I brought my parents with me this time and let me tell you they are tough critics and both were very pleased with their meals. The seared salmon was so delicious and delicate. We ordered the blueberry crisp for dessert and what a treat that was. I will absolutely return here again for another special occasion. Keep up the great work Aspen!"

  • "The service was slow! We waited 30 minutes to place the order and the tables around us were eating their meals by the time we placed our order. My husbands steak was raw (frozen in the middle). The waiter changed the order, but there was nothing to compensate for the mistake. Nor did the manager stop by to see if everything was fine even though she was circulating throughout the restaruant."

  • "Decor, service and ambiance very nice. Also the food was spectacular."

  • "We have dined as Aspen sevral times and are never disappointed. Service is exceptional, food is great. We had to wait for our entrees but quite honestly did not notice until our server came over to apologize with a round of drinks on the house. All around great place."

  • "This was my first Aspen Restaurant experience and it could not have been better! Upon entering, you are greeted by a warm inviting host person. Our server was knowledgeable, personable and attentive. The food preparation and portions were just right and the ambience made this "catching up with great friends lunch" simply perfection!!"

  • "Evert bite was rich and perfectly seasoned. I love the oxtail and foi gra the best. Would recommend to friends for romantic dinner"

  • "We were there recently on a snowy night and were impressed with the food and the service. My husband is on a pretty strict diet but was able to eat well and feel comfortably full. Neither of us had room for dessert. The beet salad was delicious!"

  • "My husband and I were extremely excited for our night out and your restaurant fell short in every aspect of our experience. From the greeting, to the drinks, to our waiter, so disappointed. My husband and I visited Aspen in the past for a dinner out and had been happy, Our drinks took 10 minutes to receive at the bar (Cucumber martini and JD Manhattan) and the martini had a fruit fly in it. When we got to our table our waiter was very awkward. We asked if there were any specials and were told "Nope, just the menu and prix fixe menu." The calamari for an appetizer was fantastic and I wish we had left after just eating that! The entrees that were sub-par quality (scallops and steak). I am sorry, but after this experience we will never return."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for Valentine's day this year! We were the youngest guest in the place but we still had a great time. Food was sensational! The service was attentive but also let you enjoy your time together with whomever you were with.I would definitely recommend coming here if you get the chance. Can be a little pricey but well worth it!"

  • "Aspen was wonderful. The servers were very polite and conscientious. The food was amazing. Our table had the duck, Lobster bolinase, seared tuna and fish special. They all looked awesome and tasted so fresh!! We had a nice bottle of cab and the desserts were fabulous. We highly recomend this resturant."

  • "We have been to Aspen a few times and like it every time! Food is well prepared and not run of the mill and service very good."

  • "From the warm greeting to the patient, friendly service, such a wonderful culinary experience. Only complaint is that one piece of foie gras was overcooked. Otherwise, every bite was perfect! Cannot wait to go back."

  • "We have been to Aspen in the past with friends and liked it so decided to introduce our Euro- friends to the place & its cuisine. The staff, including our server, were all welcoming and upbeat without being intrusive. We were seated promptly and the menu of lunch offerings was so tempting it was hard to choose. The mahi mahi was well prepared, as was the tuna & marinara. The fish & chip dish was crisp and tasty, and the chicken on ciabatta with greens and feta was a perfect blend of taste and artisinal bread. The pre-main course salad was gorgeous and generously sized but certainly enough for yet another meal. The initial bread slices were fresh, warm and had the perfect exterior crunch and chew. Lovely, warm ambiance on a cold day."

  • "The staff was very accommodating when we showed up with an unexpected fifth person. Our waitress was outstanding, very genuine and friendly, and also quite funny. My drink (the Aspen 75) was delicious, as was my grilled chicken. Everyone else at the table was very pleased with their meals. Highly recommended."

  • "My only complaint: the portions are a little small. Other than that, everything is 5-stars!"

  • "Our waiter was terrific and very accomodating. Did not rush us at all through the course of the meal. Gave advice on selections and was very helpful. Very well done. We had a very nice evening, the atmosphere was nice and food was excellently prepared. Thank you, Cameron"

  • "The waitress was very helpful. The tuna tartar was a little fishy but ok. The chicken breast was outstanding. Have and will continue to recommend Aspen to freinds"

  • "Recently went for dinner and had an enjoyable meal. The food was excellent and the servers were attentive. I would recommend Aspen to those on the shoreline looking for a nice night out or a casual drink at the bar. The menu is diverse, reasonable and the ambiance is nice."

  • "The food was outstanding. The service was quick and friendly. The dining area was very clean and well maintained. The menu is a bit pricey but the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for." If you're looking to wine and dine someone to impress then you need to take them to the Aspen."

  • "We had stopped dinning at Aspen, its very expensive and found that the food and service were not good. A couple of years ago we ate there and I found a plastic band in my salmon entree. When I alerted the server she pulled it off the plate, smiled and said "oh well, you can eat it now". That was our last time there until we recently decided to try it again in response to a promotional offer. Its much improved, the food and service were very good. In fact we even went back there again and it was even better the second time. Hopefully they learned that good marketing (especially print advertsing) and proper execution = return customers. It has possibly overtaken Liv's as the best high end eatery in Old Saybrook."

  • "Met two others for lunch. Menu had great items and it was tough to choose. Wine list was nice and had some different selections. I'll definitely return! Living in the SW corner of CT, not a local restaurant for me but will go again anytime I'm in the vicinity."

  • "always excellent.... diverse menu with something for everyone, and all delicious. great service, and there is enough room between tables that you do not feel crowded and you cannot hear people at the next table"

  • "We have dined at Aspen on several occassions. We have brought many friends and family members. We have NEVER been disappointed and everyone we bring shares our HIGH opinion of this fabulous restaurant. We brought my father-in-law for his Birthday, it was his first time at Aspen and he loved it. Our server and all of the supporitng wait staff were attentive and accommodating."

  • "I was impressed with the variety on the menu.. I could have gone down the tapas list and had every plate. This was my 3rd time dining here and have been very satisfied each time. Not to brag, but I am an excellent cook... so my standards when I go out are pretty high. The Fois Gras, Short Ribs and were excellent. (Had the pork belly last time , also wonderful). The main meals were cooked perfectly - med rare Duck and a Fish Special (Opa) that was delicious. Great service. Oh- and of coursedessert...flourless chocolate cake..yum ! w Salted Caramel Gelato... Nice pear tart too."

  • "We dinned with very special guests from Cyprus. The hostess accommodated my request to take my credit card 2 days prior so we could eat without my guest trying to pay. Our meals were perfect. Waitress paid enough attention to meet our needs but not annoying. All around each person food quality was great."

  • "Six different entrees, not one bite left! Entrée size was very reasonable. Delectable flavor from the salmon, steak, burger, pork chops, to roasted asparagus. Pricing was very reasonable considering the entrée sizes. We had local beers, wine, and soft drinks. We did not partake in desserts since we were full from our entrees. The coffee was not dehydrated/burnt, making for a wonderful end to a wonderful meal. Average price, with tax and tip, for each meal/drink (6) was approximately $38.00. The atmosphere was wonderful. Sufficient soundproofing to allow for casual conversation without straining to talk or to be heard. Make sure to have a reservation! Service was efficient, courteous, and accommodating. My party will visit again!"

  • "We come to the shoreline on a seasonal basis (April-November) and over the last few years frequented area restaurants, but Aspen absolutely has become our go to place with near weekly visits. From seasonal changes to the menu, weekly specials, and fantastic service we are already looking forward to next year. The past weekend was no exception, loved the Duck entrée and my wife's steak cooked perfectly. Special shout out to our waiter Ben, he's handled the small inconvenience of my wife's dairy allergy exceptionally well on many occasions, his knowledge of the menu and food in general constantly give more options than expected. Great job by Christine (new manager) for ensuring a very pleasant attitude and keeping to very high standards."

  • "This is our favorite in Old Saybrook. Excellent ever-changing menu. Relaxed atmosphere. Consistently good service. Well-trained staff. Creative chef. Availability of small plates a plus for those watching their calories."

  • "I was extremely pleased at the variety of top notch food choices. I would say that the menu was a wide spectrum of French- American cuisine with a hint of Orient in the fish plates. Finding a restaurant that offers beef short rib, duck, wild bore is amazing. They also have high end fish dinners including lobster, salmon, scallops, and tuna. It does not matter what you select, they incredibly paired sauces and finely chosen sides are impeccable. Seeing that amount of creativity in each dish deserves an award. I will be back many times until I have had there entire menu."
