Diner Reviews
  • "Our party of four picked the escargot appetizer; excellent. The Howard Thermidor was a red pasty dish with over-cooked lobster almost rubbery and little flavor. served atop a potato bed.. The trout was passable at best. The choux pastry with ice cream and chocolate sauce were almost like thick tough bread crusts. After her second bite of the clafoutis, my wife shoved her plate back and said it was neither light, nor tasty. We were really disappointed to spend nearly $400 on this less than satisfactory visit. We're all aged 65 or up, well travelled, and have been exposed to food around the world. We don't understand, based on this visit, how this restaurant has survived."

  • "The food was outstanding, service was a little slow, but everyone was definitely hustling. We had reservations at 8:45 and apparently it was one of the busiest services they have had to-date, and it definitely looked it. We did receive everything the way it was expected and over expectations, we did not have any cold food or anything like that quality was utmost. I highly recommend the Chef's 5 course tasting with wine pairing, we got to speak to the chef, and he does everything to try and please his customers! GREAT Place I will be back!"

  • "While some of the menu items were alright they lacked consistency. Service needed a lot of work as the overall they lacked organization."

  • "First visit, first impressions: incredibly expensive, quality is uneven, service is almost great. Details: Appetizers are $15-25 each. Entrees $30-50. Soup and Salads $10-20. Mixed drinks $15. Ouch! Seldom have we paid more, and when we have it has been an exceptional experience. Not so much here. Some of these dishes are truly great, some were served lukewarm, some (escargot, fish) were boring. Service was excellent until the second course didn't come out for 30 minutes ("there's a large group in the back"). Interior is clever and cool, semi-circle w/ raised chairs on outside, bar-side inside, all observing open kitchen. Final verdict: Too uneven to risk this kind of money. Too many other better places at better prices."

  • "Expected the food to be phenomenal but I was not a fan of my lobster thermidor or even my profiteroles as dessert. The "filet mignon" was actually pork, but, that aside, it was better than my dish."

  • "We went there for restaruant week, and it was a great experience. The open kitchen concept was well executed, and the general ambiance was fun. My wife had the trout, which was some of the finest she had ever tasted, and my pork was perfect. The only drawback was the escargot. I know this dish always has a lot of butter, but ours was drowing in grease to the point of being inedible. Again, this was a minor setback in an otherwise memorable experience. We will return."

  • "My husband and I came in for a pre theatre dinner. We arrived at 6, ordered a drink and before we finished our cocktail, the first course was served. We ordered wine and it took forever, we were in the middle of second course. We asked our waiter to slow down a little, and he told us that our table would be turned several times so they had to move fast. He said for restaurant weeks the food is prepped ahead of time so that it does come put fast. Spending that much for dinner, and they want you out in 30 minutes! Soup was lukewarm, trout was excellent, filet was ok. Profiteroles we're not great, mine are much better! Speaker was over our table, very loud. I am just not sure about coming back as this was our first impression."

  • "The pork dish was outstanding, and the chocolate mousse cake was very mouth watering. However, the escargot was smothered with salty butter."

  • "Overpriced, overrated, no flavour, no French, boring food. Wouldn't pay that much only to see a lot of rich looking people"

  • "The service was impeccable, attentive but not hovering. Food was very good, much better than many of the establishments we frequented during restaurants weeks. We plan to return soon, and often."

  • "such good reviews, amazing! however out of four courses only two good-the lobster dish was odd and speaking of dishes who on earth designed the plates-your cutlery falls into the plate when you put it down-servers dropped cutlery twice clearing the table-- you have to fish it out of sauce as each plate is a quasi bowl.wine is a ridiculous 15 a glass-very good looking place but rather uncomfortable with tall tables and long bar--have heard from others has slipped. Service was just adequate-bread very good, gazpacho s'amuse bouche good; mousse delicious-lobster unfortunate-those who got profiteroles remarked on lack of filling and chocolate and they left some rather thick soggy pastry on the odd plate, served with a fork no spoon."

  • "Went to celebrate my bday. The waiter asked if we would like to order but we were all getting acquainted and chatting so we weren't quite ready however because we were delayed I asked the waiter if they normally bring out bread to the table, he said he would be bring some out. Why didn't he bring it out in the first place? When we ordered it was mentioned it was my bday and if they do anything for the dessert. He said he would take care of it. Very delayed between courses. Finally dessert arrived, two of us ordered profiteroles (w/ice cream) and one tart. No silverware for a while. Had to ask for it. When it finally arrived - forks for the ice cream?? And no candle :-(. Terrible service ruined what should have been a nice dinner."

  • "Artisan's is a busy place on weekends. We were seated promptly and our server, Randy was very attentive for the overall level of activity on a Saturday evening. The tables were pushed very close together, forcing diners on either side of us to apologize if they needed to excuse themselves. The food was superb and well presented. Th staff at Artisan's definitely cares about their diner's experience as we observed the head chef doing everything from directing the kitchen staff to running a sweeper over the floor. We will definitely return for another evening."

  • "We fully enjoyed our dinner, the lamb was amazing. We had a group of six so were lucky to be seated in the wine room which was quieter than the open dining room. However, there is also an option to sit along a long bar to watch the open kitchen if that is an interest."

  • "I had planned to go to this restaurant a couple of months ago and it was only with Restaurant Month I was finally able to make it. Run, do not walk to this amazing gem. From the time you walk in to the last scrape of chocolate mousse off the plate, this was a wonderful dining experience. The wait staff was knowledgeable about the wine pairings- excellent domestic wines from Oregon - and offered sage advice on the entrees. The pork was succulent and do not pass go without tasting the blinis. Delicious adventure! I will be revisiting soon."

  • "Great food! Attentive, friendly staff. The "Chef's Table" is the large, communal dining experience surrounding the open, working kitchen. Interesting concept that showcases the mechanics of a fine French Kitchen. This is not the juke and jive of a Hibachi, but a precision ballet. Table seating away from the action is also available."

  • "Had a great meal at a new place. Pork filet was amazing and the trout was well prepared. Can't wait to try the regular menu after Restaurant Weeks is over. Service was OK but the bread was awesome!"

  • "To my mind, only two things keep this restaurant from being absolutely perfect in every way: (1) a better balance between bar-style seating and comfortable booth seating, and 2) toasted gluten free bread upon request. Spectacular food and service from the valet to the exit."

  • "Went to Artisans for restaurant week. Great menu, lobster casserole was fabulous! Service was slow. Runner served our food, waiter never came to explain what was being served. We had to remind him that we ordered dessert in the beginning when we ordered restaurant week menu. I really enjoy the ambience and food. I may try again, maybe it was a fluke."

  • "We are definitely not "foodies", but this was surprisingly delicious. I don't like French food, but every dish was superbly done. We went for HRW but ended up ordering off the menu. The price tag was hefty $300 for 2, but we wanted to try things we wouldn't normally get: caviar ($90) and foie gras. The atmosphere was classy and fun. Service professional. Food was tasty, worth the price. Would def come back."

  • "The ambiance was perfect for a romantic dinner. My boyfriend and I went for Houston Restaurant Weeks and we genuinely enjoyed our time there. We sat on the stools facing the kitchen so we were entertained by all the action, and we even had enough elbow room to comfortably enjoy our dinner. Our favorite dishes were the escargot for appetizer, roasted pork filet mignon for the entre, and dessert was a tie; but I will say that you must like chocolate if you opt for the chocolate mousse. They also have a notable wine list. Service was exemplary and Executive Chef Jacques Fox was going from table to table making sure everything was great. Overall, we had a wonderful time. We would love to go again, even if just to enjoy a glass of wine."

  • "Both the food and wine is good here, but it isn't that hard core french cuisine. Several dishes feels way too Texan. A nice place for dinner, but nothing that will amaze your taste buds. Service was ok."

  • "We enjoyed the Houston Restaurant Weeks menu. I chose very traditional options: the escargot—tender, not tough or chewy—swimming in garlicky, buttery deliciousness; the thermador (I usually don't order Lobster this far from the Northeast coast)—rich and delicious with a nice tender appropriate amount of the rich tail; and, profiterole—the puff soaked up the rich chocolate sauce: divine! My partner had the escargot, a pork dish (pork two ways) and chocolate mousse. He pronounced everything delicious also. We enjoyed between us an Adami prosecco, a Sancerre and two Coated du Rhone, all very satisfying. If you enjoy traditional French favorites well prepared, you will enjoy Artisans."

  • "Was late planning dinner, and the places that I wanted to go were booked. Chose this based on OpenTable reviews, so my expectations were not that high. Not only was I pleasantly surprised, this may be on the best restaurants in Houston (and I frequent some of the top steak places for business). The layout showing the kitchen was a lot of fun, since I'm a want to be foodie and service was top notch. However, the best thing there was the food. I did the 5 course tasting menu and very happy with my choice both the steak and the sea bass, are very possibly the best I've ever had of each. The chef was walking around the restaurant speaking to most of the patrons while his team was killing it (in a good way) in the kitchen."

  • "The dishes are everything one expects from fine dining. Quality product, superior preparation, pleasing presentation. Peter, our waiter, proved knowledgeable about each dish, explaining what it was or how it was prepared. He also described what qualities of the wine made it pair well with the dish, and how best to extract the most from each bite. Chef came around to ensure we had a quality experience. It was a delightful mid-week escape. We will definitely return, and telling our friends!"

  • "The exceptional food, wonderful ambience, great service, and beautiful surroundings all contributed to our awesome dining experience. The lobster bisque and scallops were fabulous as was everything we ordered. Chef/Owner Jacques Fox was very personable and welcoming. This is a "not to be missed" place to dine in Houston. So pleased to have finally made it to Houston and to Artisans. While we dine regularly at some of the finest restaurants in New Orleans, Artisans was second to none. It was truly a great experience in every way. My only regret is that we are not in Houston often enough to enjoy Artisans on a regular basis."

  • "Our first time in this restaurant and everything was perfect. We are very picky with French food and this is definitely one of the best French restaurant in Houston. Chef Jacques has focused on quality, variety and creativity. We will be back for sure!"

  • "Interesting French restaurant, especially after just coming back from Paris and Marseille. However, food is a bit spicy - like French Mexican. Our complimentary appetizer was ceviche with pepper oil (hardly French), the seafood bouillabaisse was wonderful, very good, but spicy, I guess that's French in south Texas! My spouse had the snapper, and the fish was fresh and tasty, but again, the sauce was spicy. The bread was wonderful. Make sure you order your salad with dressing on the side, otherwise you'll get old lettuce drenched all afternoon in dressing. The service was excellent, and the food Mexican!"
