A word from Artisanal Fromagerie Bistro & Wine Bar
Artisanal Fromagerie, Bistro and Wine Bar showcases the formidable creativity and passion of Chef-Proprietor Terrance Brennan who adds playful twists to classic French bistro dishes. Selecting only premium ingredients, Brennan’s commitment to the use of artisanal, sustainable and organic products is evident in the quality of each dish. Recalling a bustling Parisian bistro, Artisanal’s handsome Art Deco interior offers the sophisticated French specialties one might expect in Paris. As the name implies, Artisanal features a scrumptious selection of 250 hand-crafted cheeses from around the world. In the back of the dining room is the cheese cave, a temperature and humidity controlled room, where a number of the world’s finest artisanally-made cheeses are aged to optimum ripeness and peak flavor. Adjacent to the dining room is the wine bar, which boosts 75 wines by the glass.Continued
Diner Reviews
  • "Artisinal was the only place in NYC that we could find that offered a cheese fondue. In addition to the cheese fondue, our party has the salade nicoise . Both were fine. Friendly waiter. The restaurant was bustling with tourists and workers having lunch......it had an NYC vibe. We enjoyed."

  • "The air conditioning doesn't seem to work at all The staff was totally overwhelmed Service was very slow. It even took 20 minutes for them to bring desert, which was sorbet. Wine was very over priced. ($15 for a glass of a domestic white wine) A huge disappointment We complained but they made no accommodation"

  • "Excellent food - good country pate; outstanding skate (the pureed cauliflower was delicious); excellent crème brulee. Two negatives - it was very noisy and the seating was uncomfortable - the banquettes were too low, and the cane side chairs gave no back support. That said, it is worth repeating that the skate was the nicest I have eaten in a long while - even tastier than at Le Cirque!"

  • "I love this place. The service on this visit was slow and a little spacy, but everything else was up to par."

  • "We enjoyed the prix fixe specials and especially recommend the cheese platter for dessert. Our waitress, Irena, was especially helpful and very friendly and reliable. I know that we will go back."

  • "I have never been less than delighted with a meal at Artisanal."

  • "Artisanale is a great restaurant. Their normal bistro food was perfectly cooked and presented in a very professional manner. The Skate and salmon were delicious. The cheese course was a perfect dessert. The best part is that they left us alone. We were there with friends for 3 1/2 hours and had a great time. If I have any complaint at all, it is that there are very few wine bargains."

  • "Went for restaurant week. The skate and salmon was great. The ice cream and creme brulee was good too. Service was a little slow, but overall I enjoyed the experience."

  • "Very nice list of wines by the glass with many regions represented. Lively bar scene increased the noise of the tables near the bar as the evening progressed. The Trout Almondine was well prepared and delicious."

  • "Always professional service and always great food. The was my first time here during a summer month. The result: the dining room was only half-full, which lowered the noise level in the otherwise crowded and noisy dining room."

  • "Wonderful dining experience. Remarkable selection of cheeses from many different countries. Great soup and sandwich special for lunch."

  • "We had the misfortune to eat at this restaurant July 14th- Bastille Day. The service was awful- the poor waitress we had was overwhelmed by too many tables and neglected us and our neighbors. When we asked to speak to the manager, Kathy came over and was almost polite and completely useless. The food was poor and poorly served- orders sent out wrong, meat overcooked. When the bill came and it was incorrect, we asked to speak to the manager again (after the wait staff had come over to apologize and suggest we speak to the new management). Kathy hid in the corner and ignored us. This is a bad midtown restaurant, period. In New York City, there are abundant opportunities to eat well... Dont waste your time here."

  • "Food was very good. Your service could use some improvement. Service wasn't bad, it just wasn't on par with other french restaurants in the area and the price."

  • "I arrived at 6PM and the restaurant was unpleasantly warm despite only a few diners being present. Also, te restaurant had run out of sparkling water on a hot day! I ordered my prior favorite appetizer, grilled octopus, only to find the a smaller portion of octopus hidden under a mountain of potatoes. The charming brasserie ambiance was much diminished to loud, truly awful, background music. On the plus side, my steak was excellent and the service was helpful and attentive, I am not, however, inclined to return."

  • "I have never written a review like this one....but I really expect something better when a restaurant is this expensive. My husband's beef was dry. The risotto unexciting. My brother's fish was way too salty. They did not bring bread to the table, I had to ask. The cocktails were not very good and small for the $$$. Olives and a twist were not given with the Martini as requested. We had to call the waiter over and ask for them...then add them ourself. POOR. The beet salad had no flavor. Find another place with more bang for your buck. Blahhh. Never again."

  • "The food was of good quality and pleasant flavors. Had to ask for bread and butter. Drink pricing was outrageous, and the pours were not very generous. I enjoy the place better for lunch. We sat at the end of a bench near the front and the manager just opened the door to the street without even a "would you mind", the nioce atmosphere was suddenly erased by the noise of passing trucks on 32nd St. Maybe just an off night in the summer"

  • "Was greeted and seated quickly. Service was spot on, Knowledgeable and professional staff. Impressive High Ceilings, great decor and spacious seating. Was attending a concert at Madison Sq. Garden and this was absolutely perfect but plan on going back for brunch and dinner to relive the moment."

  • "Always great, however for the first time the food was not. Chicken under a brick-skin was not cooked right. Undercooked and fatty around the edges. The chicken meat was tasty. Our other entree-steak au poivre, was a lump of beef properly cooked but tasted more like a Madagascar sauce than au poivre that we usually get in a bistro. The pepper sauce caught your throat. Accompaniments were perfect. An outstanding has to be given to the dessert, chocolate tart with caramel ice cream."

  • "Have eaten at Artisanal before. The food is good, typical NYC bistro. The service on this occasion is very poor. Had to get up and get menus as an example. There are better, but it's generally dependable."

  • "I was recommended to come to the restaurant for their great cheese and wine selection so we really kept to this closely. We entered the restaurant to a friendly hostess and were seated from our reservation. We had a waiter that took our drink order but didn't see him back for a long time and had to actually get up and tell the hostess and she actually mentioned she apologized and that they only had 2 servers for the entire restaurant tonight so they were under staffed but still the manager didn't do anything. It wasn't the servers fault, he really redeemed himself by helping and surprising us with an amazing cheese selection in our cheese plate we ordered which was delicious!! I would recommend adding in honey to it which I always do."

  • "A very relaxing Sunday brunch! Food was excellent. I had Sauteed Skate Wing which was outstanding. Don't pass up the Creme Brulee. Server was attentive but not intrusive."

  • "We had the delicious gougers and the fondue of the day with the apples, sausage and potatoes. We also had the chacouterie and cheese plate. It was a lot of food for three people, but we finished it all! Loved it!"

  • "We had dinner at Artisinal last Wednesday. Obviously the air conditioning was not working. It was uncormortably hot and humid in the space. We skipped desert because we were so sweaty and felt gross. We will absolutely not return without being told the AC has been fixed and working. Food was very good but the atmosphere was terrible."

  • "Having been a big fan of the chef for decades we were extremely disappointed with our experience. No complaints with the food, but too many service blunders to mention. Unfortunately, the great food was all but ruined by service that was mispaced, disjointed and lacking any kind of professionalism one would expect from a top tier chef. Oh well."

  • "We are 3 childhood friends meeting for a catch-up. Well-seated in the back as requested. Our waiter was a bit TOO attentive initially, but ultimately picked up our slow meal vibe! I had the pork belly hash and poached egg minus the chipotle sauce and it was perfectly seasoned and prepared. My friends were also happy with their choices of cold cauliflower soup, 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich and salad. Quiet reigned despite many tables being filled. One criticism: we split the bill three ways, and they list 3 possible tip choices, normally a helpful addition, BUT after I left I realized that the tip listed on each of our checks was for the total check! Leaving in a hurry, we missed the logic of the excessive tip suggestion. Careful!"

  • "I have not been there in a year and this used to be a favorite of mine...My main dish, skate was overcooked and dry. The lunch special is no longer available and prices are up...The desserts were good and the service fine. There is nothing special about it anymore..."

  • "One of my "go to" restaurants for many years, but this time several things indicated that it has seen better days, although the food (and the cheese!) remain great. Here's my experience this time: they had my reservation for the wrong time, claiming someone had moved the reservation time (p.s. I had not changed anything); it was an unusually warm and sticky day and the air conditioning was BARELY on (they have better AC in France these days!); the staff was harried and seemed like they were 2d or 3rd string (clearly have cut back on what is being spent on the waitstaff); the banquette was lumpy with a patched up cover. I hope the owners wake up before they destroy what good will they've managed to build over the years."

  • "Food never disappoints. But the service, though friendly, was spotty. Hard to get our waiters' attention, and then items came very late or out of synch."

  • "Artisanal has been a favorite for family get-togethers in New York, and when we returned this Father's Day, everything was just as good, if not better than we remembered. Great fondue, delicious entree choices. Happy occasion."

  • "Freshest seafood followed by the cheese and charteuriere tray always a favorite. The servers very knowledgable about the menu and recommendations. Artisanal always takes me back to Paris with the decor. My only complaint: the restrooms have zero air conditioning."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "Came here on a friends recommendation but not thrilled! Service was confusing...5 different people coming to table but yet was not effecient! Food was fair. Wine prices extremely high compared to other NY restaurants( and I dont mind paying for a good bottleof wine). Will not return here."

  • "Always consistently delicious and a fun place to dine."

  • "The food at Artisanal is always lovely, and the atmosphere is very comfortable. We went for my birthday, and enjoyed mussels and fries, asparagus dripping with cheesy butter and a big pot of creamy fondue. It was a great night, and I plan to go back soon."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "My friends and I visited Artisanal for dinner, and it was outstanding. The Monday Special, Dorade Royale, was perfection, as were the fish soup and the outrageously good spinach gratin and mac and cheese sides we shared. The staff was friendly and helpful. I was only sorry we were too stuffed to eat cheese or dessert, because it looked terrific."
