A word from Art and Soul
Four years after Celebrity Chef Art Smith opened Art and Soul, the Capitol Hill restaurant underwent a refresh and re-opened in late February 2013. In addition to beautiful herringbone wood floors, textured walls, and unique artwork, you'll also enjoy an exciting new menu. Our approach is driven by our chefs’ Southern roots. We serve simple honest food and partner with like-minded farmers, artisans and growers to provide products that are sustainably and responsibly sourced, whenever possible.

With celebrated two-time James Beard award winning Chef Art Smith as chef/owner, this Capitol Hill restaurant has received national and local acclaim for its "Food for the Soul" - modern regional cuisine with southern accents.

  • "It was a great experience! The hostess was polite and friendly, our waiter was "Awesome" & the food was delicious. My 2 fixes would be level of privacy. We didn't mind the open view outside but there was one waiter that repeatedly entered through the outer door of our dining room with out announcing himself or knocking or anything. Clearly he could have used the main entrance like the other waiters, but he wanted to take a shortcut. Also a gentleman, he appeared to be a manager, came through the same door a couple times with the same disregard for the party having dinner there. He helped serve us a couple times but seemed very distant and "uppity". Not the kind of personality you would want serving you food. Overall, great evening!!"

  • "I'd heard about this place for years and was anxious to try it during restaurant week. My appetizer was ordinary. My catfish was bland and raw in the middle. Even the dessert was unremarkable. More troubling was the waitress, who basically ignored us. Those who filled our water were attentive, but she was nowhere to be seen during the whole meal. They did comp the catfish, but not the rest of my meal. The cornbread was fabulous! There were four of us and the other three said their meals were ok, but they didn't need to return."

  • "I went to this restaurant on Saturday. Great parking to start off right in front of the restaurant but inside it was beautiful. I love little vintage stuff here and there so I could appreciate this place but the pictures you see online from the inside. t looks even better in person. The food was great even though the portions I assumed I would still be hungry. I couldnt finish my bread pudding I was too full. I also got a regular mojito which I asked for it to be a little sweet and it was perfect. There is nothing I could complain about because our waiter was excellent as well!"

  • "I came, I ordered and I conquered. I was our first time at Art & Soul. We came for Restaurant Week and the food was pretty good. I wouldn't say that I would run back to this place for dinner, but if I am in the mood for good mashed potatoes, collard greens and fried chicken, even though it is dark meat, I will be back here. Also, the blueberry bread pudding is delicious!"

  • "This place looks fabulous, great outdoor patio but that's where it ends. The food is just 'meh'. Ridiculously overpriced. I ordered the fried Chicken (because that's what they are famous for apparently). I've had better at KFC....My husband had the catfish which tasted very bland. We try different restaurants all the time and this was one of them. We won't be back."

Where was a family from NC, visiting DC sitting next to me and Kenya was their server too. She not only told them about the food in Art and Soul, but other places to visit. They let with a full stomach and exicitment to visit DC. Now that's great service. I will be back. Thanks,"

  • "We were more than 30 min. late, but they held our reservation for lunch. We had a nice view of the outside terrace. It was restaurant week so we had great food for a great price! Our waiter was gracious, very attentive. They promptly removed the empty dishes. I had the comfort food: fried chicken, greens, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Delicious! As was the soup. The desert combined a lemon-ginger shortcake with fresh blueberries, vanilla ice cream and lemon curd. The cake served warm, smelled and tasted wonderful. I would definitely go again."

  • "Many chefs and restaurants see restaurant week as a pain, but I was pleased to see art and soul put together a very well crafted prix fixe menuthat highlighted the flavors of summer. The pork terrine was excellent and the pickled peppers and vegetables were the perfect counterpoint to its richness. The soup was bright and light. The flavors of the vegetables were clear and just accented by the cream. The farro risotto was a beautiful dish. Lots of summer veggies in a perfectly cooked risotto which was accented but not dominated by the cheese. The service was inattentive, but acceptable. However the waiter's asking if I needed change was not something I would have expected from this caliber of place."

  • "the broccoli soup was the most flavorful of the three dishes, but was served at room temperature. I had the flank steak that lacked salt and was tough to cut and chew. the fried potato sticks were an odd pairing to put on a fork with a bite of meat. My husband had the fried chicken that came out oiley and lacking seasoning. He loved the gravy and mashed potatoes. For dessert I had the berry bread pudding that was good, but again nothing extra ordinary. The butterscotch pannacotta was more of a pudding than jiggly custard and the flavors of the caramel corn made it seem like an odd menu item for a summer menu. we were really disappointed and won't be coming back. The highlight of the evening was the exceptional service."

  • "we had a great time at art and soul when we went for restaurant week! the soup of the day was a carrot and ginger soup...which was hands down amazing!! it was my favorite dish of the night. each dish we ordered had a great taste (albacore tuna and fried chicken were also pretty great, finished with the blueberry bread pudding!). I would recommend this place for a date night or to celebrate. we also had a drink at the bar...the bartender was fun and explained one of the cocktails we ordered (it was the cucumber and fennel drink) since it was an unusual combination of ingredients. overall, food was unique and tasty topped with friendly service!"

  • "I've dined here in 2011 and it was enjoyable. However dining there on 08/13/14 wasn't a pelasure. The waiter seemed aloof, was unattentive and never checked in periodically to inquire about our needs. There was construction going on at the adjoining hotel, had I known that I would have opted for a different restaurant. WE dined outside, the maite-D allowed a homeless person to distract another patron. She made no attempt to ask him to leave. There were bugs (bees and flies) flying around, perhaps there is a need for outdoor pesticide control. The flank steak was tough the chicken was good. I won't be back."

  • "I was on time for my reservation and was seated, but my guest was late. I indicated to the host staff that my guest was running late. When my guest arrived, the replacement host staff indicated that I had no reservation. I just happened to look up and notice my guest wandering aimlessly because I texted that I was seated in the restaurant. When I shared this situation with the host staff, she insinuated that it was my fault for being seated without my guest, which I found appalling. If the restaurant has a policy of seating all diners for prescribed reservation, then it should be clearly stated to guest (via online and in person). Despite this situation, the food, beverages and wait staff were great."

  • "Very nice vibe and atmosphere. Great lighting. Drink prices were a bit high. 16 dollars for a shot of jw black or 13 for a shot of jack for example. Liked the cheese and meat board but wish there were more options on the menu entree wise. Dessert was great by the way."

  • "I went to Art and Soul for a Sunday brunch. The restaurant is situated in a hotel. However, it has a seperate entrance. The decorations and ambiance were great. Most important the food was amazing! I had the farmer's brunch platter and was very pleased. The bacon was the best I've ever had, it was thick cut and apple wood smoked. The wait staff were attentive and very accomodating. Great DC gem!"

  • "The good: The buttermilk fried chicken meal was excellent! The chicken was seasoned so well and it was crisp. The mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. The collard greens were excellent. We also had the appetizer of bacon cornbread, excellent. The waiting staff how ever was great. The Bad: Price!! I'm not cheap by any means but paying $25 for two pieces of fried chicken is steep. Yes it was delicious, but not $25 delicious. Also my girlfriend wasn't a fan of the shrimp and grits, she said she had much better and they could have left out the hominy. Also once again Price! The dish was $27 and the portion was small. Disappointed in the price, but may consider a return for the chicken dish."

Okay, but not as fabulous. We later found out that our fav chef is usually only on WEEKENDS. Go on a WEEKEND! You won't be sorry!"

It is quite pricey for this type of food, but our starters and mains were done very nicely, no complaints for what we ordered and got, and I'm pretty hard to please."

We went back for almost every meal during our stay for the pleasure of dining there! The dining room is pleasant, but unimpressive, but the food is superb. The menu offers upscale comfort food, highlighting fresh, local ingredients. The chef's southern roots are evident, but the menu is creative and emphasizes the fresh flavors of seasonal foods. The servers are knowledgeable and helpful, without being pretentious or overly solicitous. Desserts are imaginative and RICH! One is more than enough for two people. The wine list is complete and offers a range of prices. We enjoyed every bite of every meal!"

  • "I ate here with a couple of business colleagues and the food was uneven. The appetizers we ordered (tomato salad, crab cakes) were fairly good, although there was tendon in the crab cakes. The entrees were universally disappointing. I ordered the stuffed trout and my colleagues both had the halibut, all recommended by our server. My trout was bland mush and neither of my colleagues finished their entrees."
