Four years after Celebrity Chef Art Smith opened Art and Soul, the Capitol Hill restaurant underwent a refresh and re-opened in late February 2013. In addition to beautiful herringbone wood floors, textured walls, and unique artwork, you'll also enjoy an exciting new menu. Our approach is driven by our chefs’ Southern roots. We serve simple honest food and partner with like-minded farmers, artisans and growers to provide products that are sustainably and responsibly sourced, whenever possible.

With celebrated two-time James Beard award winning Chef Art Smith as chef/owner, this Capitol Hill restaurant has received national and local acclaim for its "Food for the Soul" - modern regional cuisine with southern accents.

This ws my 3rd or 4th visit to Art and Soul, but only the first for brunch. I cannot recommend the Chicken and Waffles which I what I had. Brunch for two with two drinks with tip was about $130. i wish I could say it was money well spend, but it was just so-so. The drinks were good and the service was pretty good, but my chicken had so much batter and it was over cooked. I did not enjoy the the chicken and the waffles were just ok. My girlfriend had the steak and she enjoyed that, so maybe I just made the wrong entree choice. The waiter said the chicken and waffles was the most ordered, so i went with that. I wouldn't advice you to try it and I would go there again, but I won't order that dish.

Food is great. Always. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits and requested it without sausage. Waiter offered lengthy reasons not to and advised ordering a salad with a protein which she did not want. Shrimp and grits has great taste without sausage because of the seasonings the roui with tomato, okra and peppers. So that comment was ridiculous. Her shrimp without andouille was great. Service here just always feels untrained but I love it and will always continue to eat here.

I was in DC for some meetings and looked for a restaurant that good could accommodate a party of 6 at the last moment. I had heard about this restaurant, wand was somewhat surprised to find they have availability for us and when we arrived were fairly empty. The food was good - as they claim they make all their smoked meas and terrines in house, as well as pickle the vegetables served along with that. My only complaint was the service, it was slow. Which was surprising because the place wasn't that busy. They also offer single bottles of wine for a slightly reduced price. The problem was the server didn't know, of they didn't tell her what was out of stock. we ordered several bottles that after the fact were told were out of stock. Better communication is needed.

We have been dying to experience this restaurant since visiting Table Fifty Two in Chicago. We finally got our chance and had a very elegant yet down home experience here. The service was amazing and our server, Kenya, was so warm and inviting; we felt like her guest. She gave us great advice on everything. The food wasn't over the top like Table Fifty Two but it was all very delicious and prepared perfectly. My sea scallops were cooked to perfection with a crusty outside and a silky, melt in your mouth, interior. We should have ordered the mac and cheese. Just the smell of it as it went by our table made my mouth water. We will go back and check out more of the menu.

My husband brought me here for our anniversary dinner. The food was awesome and our server was great. But the hostest made our night. Somehow our reservation did not go through and the she allowed us to re-reserve so that we could get our points. She sat us immediately and the rest of our night was made, when our server brought us a complimentary dessert in celebration of our anniversary. It was definitely too loud in there for it to be a romantic date but we still had a good time!

The place is one of those restaurants where you can meet with business colleagues to have a working lunch, but not for anyone who is interested in a memorable meal, certainly not a place to meet family or friends for that complete dining experience. The service was really nice but unfortunately what is served is bland in taste.

I took my niece here for dinner. A bit pricey for a fried chicken dinner. But she enjoyed it - I guess because I was paying. However, the service was excellent - maybe because we came before it got real crowded. Overall the food and atmosphere was really nice. I will definitely come back because I need to taste the fried chicken. I order shrimp and crits. It has some kind of sauce with okra. A little spicy for me but I am a pretty bland eater. Not bad - not the best. The shrimp was really good!

Complimentary delicious apricot ginger scones started our brunch at Art and Soul. What a smart move! My bloody Mary was full-flavored with a little heat. Our server was kind enough to bring me some extra bread and butter pickles that are used to garnish the drink. They are incredible! The most amazingly juicy brined chicken and waffle I've ever head. Just like Mama never made! Fantastic collard greens. Meh biscuit and gravy, very light on the sausage. Fried potatoes ok. Attentive service. Diverse crowd at brunch. Very large portions. Could easily have shared an entree and a side.

This average review is driven by the service and the food. Our waitress was average. She seemed to know the menu but not care much about it or us. Then she brought the appetizer and my guest's entree at the same time. When she realized her mistake she hurried to get my entree out. Neither of us had time to enjoy the app. That brings me to the food... The app (fried calamari) was fantastic. My guest had the quiche, which he said was OK. I had the butter nut squash polenta and it was just OK too. Great idea for a dish but it just didn't hang together well enough (and it wasn't hot enough either.)

We enjoyed the food, but the service was slow and the ambiance was lacking. It was very apparent that this place used to be the hotel cafeteria. The lighting is dim, the walls are dark, and the small, square tables are old, dark formica. They should invest a liitle into their infrastructure. At $230 with tip, this experience was overpriced and doesn't rate the top 10 for capitol hill.

Art and Soul is a quality dining spot. Food was really good. There was one item I had that wasn't prepared correctly but seemed to be anomaly more so than anything regular. The drinks here are great. The seating is a bit odd against the wall, which where they sit most parties of two. Other seating is better. But overall its a great place to dine.

Very much enjoyed the evening at Art and Soul. I would recommend this restaurant along with a comment of "a bit pricey". That said, the quality of the food was outstanding. Service was very good but at one time too much time had passed without attention to our wine so we poured it ourself. Not a big deal but when you are paying premium prices this maybe should not happen.

I've been to Art & Soul many times, it's near my office without being so close that you know everyone sitting around you. The food is good tho a bit too much for lunch, they could use some smaller/lighter versions of their sandwiches and other options. The sandwiches come with the option of salad or fries, I had salad which was fine except there was no dressing on it. When I pointed it out to the server, he insisted that there must be dressing - the leaves were visibly dry?! Come on. The server was pleasant tho not speedy, which at lunchtime is essential. Art & Soul is usually very good, there are simple things to improve - but as there's a dearth of nice restaurants in that area below the Hill, there isn't much pressure to do so!

We went for any early brunch. Got a last minute reservation as our other choice called earlier in the morning saying they were closed due to a power outage. Food was delicious...although I could have used double the grits with my shrimp and grits. We arrived at 6:30. The patio was filled with an after work crowd from nearby Capitol Hill. We were seated promptly in the nearly empty inside space, our friendly server made menu suggestions. My Caesar salad was lightly dressed, crisp and fresh. My wife's pumpkin soup was hot, creamy and mild in flavor. For the main course I had salmon served on a risotto-quinoa-vegetable mix. The salmon was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and moist meat. The grain mixture was just average. The Shrimp and Grits my wife ordered was a delicious blend of flavors with enough heat to keep it interesting but not overwhelmingly spicy. Disappointing Baby Cakes for dessert : a variety of mini cakes mostly lacking in flavor. Great service, hip vibe, great food.

Went here when my aunt came to visit, I've been here a few times but even my DC-based family were unaware of this cute spot. We sat outside and started with the Sampler Plate and complimentary scones - delicious! They were out of the crab frittata, which was disappointing, so I went with the shrimp and grits instead. I also had a bite of the breakfast sandwich, which I highly recommend. One of the best parts about A&S is the bacon - thick strips and perfectly cooked. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed their food. Definitely recommend for families or groups of friends. Afterwards we took a quick stroll for a pic in front of the capitol. Wonderful, all around!

I had the catfish--it was a little overcooked, so it was rubbery and chewy. The blueberry lemon cake was delicious. Our service was very unfortunate. Our waiter interrupted us frequently, and pushed us to order quickly. He left the dessert menus, then came back and we said, "We haven't look at them yet." He responded, "Well, they're right in front of you." He later returned and said, "Well, you've had those menus now for about 15 minutes--have you decided?" This was a family reunion dinner, of sorts--we'd not seen each other in a long while and wanted to catch up in a leisurely fashion. It would have been nice if the waiter had just let us know where he'd be, so that we could catch his attention when we were ready.

Food, service and wine recommendation lives up to the promises from the website and reputation. Small downside on ambiance as construction were going on outside, impairing overall atmosphere; and the table corner by the kitchen door was not exactly the most enjoyable place in the restaurant. Have been wanting to try Art and Soul and went there for lunch. It being a restaurant all about southern cuisine, I tried the shrimp and grits. It was good, but nothing special. Also didn't care for the very sleek, modern design of the restaurant--dark hard wood tables with no table cloths. It felt a bit cold. Finally service was pretty slow for a business lunch. After the waiter brought our drinks, it took another 10 minutes before he took our order. Not sure I'm interested in coming back here.

The restaurant should have been closed. Throughout our meal, construction workers were drilling concrete at the restaurant entrance. The table was vibrating and we could not hear each other. It was as if the drilling was at our table. We would not have chosen this place had we known; the workers were on break when we arrived. We ordered our lunch in a normal, quiet period, and we were not told about the construction until after we ordered. They resumed drilling about 5 minutes later. The management should have closed the restaurant or compensated us. We were offered a free coffee drink, but only after we complained. Too bad, it's typically a good place.

This was one of the worst meals I have had in a very long time. The eggplant soup was absolutely tasteless. The fried chicken, for which Art is famous, tasted as if it had been made the night before and was reheated in the microwave. This is actually the best description of most of what we ate. I kept thinking we would see clouds as we looked out the window because the last time we ate food so microwaved was on a flight... We didn't even eat more than a couple of fries that were tepid and soggy and the mashed potatoes which were so heavy and bland. Even the cookie was not fresh. How hard is it to take ready made dough from the refrigerator and bake it in the oven? Our server was very nice and the 12 hour pork was fine.
