A word from Art and Soul
Four years after Celebrity Chef Art Smith opened Art and Soul, the Capitol Hill restaurant underwent a refresh and re-opened in late February 2013. In addition to beautiful herringbone wood floors, textured walls, and unique artwork, you'll also enjoy an exciting new menu. Our approach is driven by our chefs’ Southern roots. We serve simple honest food and partner with like-minded farmers, artisans and growers to provide products that are sustainably and responsibly sourced, whenever possible.

With celebrated two-time James Beard award winning Chef Art Smith as chef/owner, this Capitol Hill restaurant has received national and local acclaim for its "Food for the Soul" - modern regional cuisine with southern accents.

  • "FOOD: The food was excellent. We started with the Snack Board and had the Fried Chicken for two meal as a main course and the Baby Cakes for dessert. Every item on the snack board other than the pork rinds was great - especially the deviled eggs. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside and unbelievably moist on the inside. The dessert was satisfying but nothing to write home about. SERVICE: We received our drinks and appetizer pretty fast but the service went downhill from there. We waited 45 minutes for our main course and were told 10 minutes after we started eating that they were out of one of the sides we ordered. If you want excellent food but don't mind horrible service, I recommend this place."

  • "Overall, I was quite disappointed with our experience at Art & Soul. We were seated at 8:00 and didn't receive our drinks until 8:45! We ordered a bottle of wine with dinner. When we ordered the second bottle, we were told that had been the last bottle. The waiter suggested another wine, which was $120 more! One of our party ordered the prix fixe menu, which meant ordering the dessert at the same time. After she finished her entrée, the waiter told her the chocolate dessert took 40 minutes and they could not fix it for her and brought her a substitute, which wasn't chocolate. This was 2 hours after she had ordered it! When she complained, they brought her another chocolate dessert. The food was fine, but not outstanding."

  • "Interesting menu. Great decor. Really cool light fixtures. Loved the southern roots as expressed in the menu but not overkill. Great wine list. We really enjoyed the Sancerre. I loved loved loved the scallops and sasify, my new favorite root vegetable. The cauliflower soup was ever so slightly on the salty side, though. The room immediately to the right when you enter the restaurant was very loud, so we asked to be moved to the room farther in, which is carpeted. That helped immensely with the noise control. Thanks for moving us!"

  • "I've dined at Art and Soul many times - only for lunch. I've always been pleased with the food selection (quality, quantity and presentation). This past time I had their ribs, potato salad and baked beans - a comfort food made elegant!"

  • "Had the power lunch - Fabulous deal for $25. Had salad, entree and a fresh baked cookie. The salad was fresh. The smoked pork sandwich was incredibly tasty...my mouth is watering now with the memory!! The cookie was delivered in a small wax paper bag for take out ...and it was warm!! I wanted to eat it there with a tall glass of cold milk. It restrained myself..."

  • "We had the buckwheat crepes as our only appetizer. They were good, although none of the flavors stood out. Our main courses were Shrimp and grits, pan-roasted snapper, and confit pork belly and pig head ravioli. My wife and our friend said the seafood dishes were good, if not special. My confit pork belly was good, although the crisped part of it was too thick to cut and had to be broken. The ravioli shell was undercooked and tough, but the filling was good. The ravioli should have been warmer to bring out the flavor and as a contrast to the confit. We also had a side dish of red beans that had a mild flavor, but was too dry and the beans were grainy. All of the food was served too cool (except for the confit, of course)."

  • "As first time diners, we had higher expectations. Dined here for lunch to find their smoked chicken salad to be mediocre, although their fried calamari appetizer was on point. My bf had their fried chicken dish, which he said was good; his father ordered the prime rib, which was by far the driest, toughest ribs we had ever seen and tasted. Service could've, and should've been better, considering the restaurant rep. My salad had to be taken back, as they had placed the dressing ON the salad, when I had requested it to be on the side, and server didn't come check up on us as much as she should've. Their desserts, however, were pretty amazing. I'd recommend this place for their desserts and overall restaurant setting & ambiance."

The ambiance is pretty and our table was perfect--plenty of space for a boisterous conversation--and our server was perfection, with excellent recommendations for our food . Get the cheese board with local selections and housemade butter crackers. We loved the shrimp & grits and fried chicken. We will be back."

  • "The food was amazing - maybe the best shrimp I've ever had! It was cooked & flavored so perfectly. The seasonal drink menu was fun and the wine list extensive. But, the highlight of the outing had to be our server. Anton was fun, engaging, knowledgable, and warm. A bonus was our extra side dish and surprise sampling of baby cakes. Overall, a really wonderful experience!"

  • "Looking forward to having lunch. Ordered the Free Range Fried Chicken. Not worth the $17. Waiter said, chicken is dark meat--leg and thigh. When lunch arrived, plate was served with two legs. The scallion mashed potatoes were missing the scallions and the black pepper gravy was missing black pepper and only a teaspoon on top of potatoes. On the other hand, the greens were perfectly cooked. Overall food was tasty; but not the quality or attention to detail as my last visits. Art, bring back the Soul."

  • "This is the first time I have been to Art & Soul for dinner (have been for brunch before). I thought the menu was a bit lacking. Probably the best item was Shrimp & Grits. (very beautiful display of food and the grits are divine.) Large table close by us was very loud - it was much better after they left. Decor is very simple, but nice - not really noteworthy. Took a while to get waited on but then our waiter was attentive. I prefer this restaurant for breakfast/brunch (the scones and coffee are outstanding)."

  • "Came here with a friend to eat before heading over to Kennedy Center for a performance. Service was prompt and courteous; my ribeye was excellent; my friend's soon was equally good. Only criticism is use of tap water for water glasses - ugh. Took us 15 minutes by car to get to KC which beats the NW dining choices and no valet fees."

  • "Server was patient since our group of six couldn't decide on what to order. We wanted it all! We ordered the banana waffle, chicken and waffle, farmers breakfast, blt benedict, and egg sandwich. Food was brought to the table hot and everything was cooked properly. The bacon was a.maze.ing. Our server couldn't have been nicer. We ordered some brunch alcoholic beverages which were yummy. Two things to keep in mind; some menu prices online were less than on the menu at the restaurant and in the description of the chicken and waffle the "hot" maple syrup means spicy not temperature. Flavor was good but next time we will ask for maple syrup without the spice. OH and the apricot ginger scones...swoon."

  • "We chose Art and Soul because we were meeting visitors from LA and it was easy for them to get to with a great parking garage and metro access. My husband had the BLT Benedict and he said it was ok, the hollandaise needed some work, my daughter had the chicken and waffles. She said the peppers were great with the dish, not too spicy, good flavor. I had the lemon pancakes and they were really good. Service was so-so, this was our second time here, the renovations are nice, the food is never a home run."

  • "I was looking for new place to have brunch. This place was highly recommended. The pictures on the website sealed the deal. Due to the weather, the place was not busy, as I was told it's normally packed. Therefore, we were sat immediately. It took about 5 minutes before we were greated. Then another 10 minutes before our server came back to take our order. This 10 minute disappearing act happen the entire time. At one point, another server came over to assist us. We also had to ask the manager for our check, which i might add, we told him the service was slow and he didn't even acknowledge our comment. The food was ok for brunch. Nothing to write home about. I've had better. I hear the dinner is better. I'm not sure if I will come back."

  • "we were initially disappointed to find the restaurant located in a hotel. ho hum food, poor service loomed. our Nepalese server destroyed that misimpression with friendliness and professional service of the type found in Europe. the brunch menu was not extensive but offered plenty of options. one of our party had chicken and waffles, a first for him. the chicken was battered and moist inside; the waffles were soft and added a nice textural counterpoint. i had lemon pancakes, which were soft and could have used berry accompaniment; the southern BLT was an interesting reimagining of the classic. the complimentary sweet bisquits/bread had us grabbing to win the last one."

  • "A friend and I had dinner here on a Thurs. night-a busy and bustling place with lots of ambiance. Service was excellent and attentive. The menu is short but offers enough choices to please almost everyone. Would highly recommend this place for business and a special occasion-as the prices are not cheap but offers good value. The bar area just outside of the restaurant offers a nice place to enjoy a drink."

  • "I was a bit annoyed by 4 different waiters/waitresses that tried to take my plate when I was not done eating. There cannot be an assumption that because a person does not have their fork in hand that the they are finished eating. I hate that! The food was just ok. The marshmallow mouse was not good and there was "no mouse" that sauce needs to be reevaluated and the crust should be changed. I have no idea what it was, not good."

  • "Brought my girl here for Valentines day. The menu is very limited, and don't expect to see a lot of the stuff you saw in the Yelp Pictures. Aparantly the menu changes often. What is on the dinner menu is overpriced, and definetly doesnt taste worth the money. We wound up ordering some super bland duck and seafood gumbo. They gave us enough rice for one person. Do yourself a favor and pick another restaurant. The waitstaff wasn't too bad."

  • "Me and my fiancé loved the fried chicken. The whole meal was great. We go the family style meal that came with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and greens. It was all delicious. The mashed potatoes and gravy was so creamy and flavorful. It's a good spot for couples for date night. Oh let me not forget the bacon cornbread. Yes bacon. It was delicious. :-) I will be going back for more chicken and to try the ribeye."

  • "The Food is always worth the drive and parking fees. Started at the bar, where Ronnie, the bar tender, was easy-going and friendly. At the table, "awesome" Asam provided just enough input and attentiveness that we didn't feel hovered. We ordered 2 appetizers, the stuffed quail & the Snacking platter (fried boudin balls, yum). Of the 4 entrees, I would recommend 3: 1) shrimp & grits (heads on the shrimp for those who are squeamish), 2) the lamb was falling off the bone, and 3) the smoked half chicken has coq-a-vin flavors, rustic perfection."

We were there for brunch and our only "complaint" ( and it is not a complaint at all) was there was too much food for us to finish.   • "I am from the south. I know good fried chicken. This was EXCELLENT fried chicken. The potatoes were creamy, mouth watering and filled with chives. The corn bread had bacon in it - who doesn't love bacon? The drinks were made exactly right (I had a mojito). The wine was excellent. I can't say enough good things about my experience there. I want the chicken sent to my home on a regular basis. With regard to the ambiance, it is on the ground floor of a hotel. You did feel like you were eating in the lobby somewhat however, the food and service more than made up for any ambiance concern."

  • "Our server, Kenya, was friendly and funny, when asked if she had any favorites from the menu she was able to give us several recommendations that were more descriptive than the menu listing. We ordered based on her recommendations and everything we had was spectacular. I like knowing that servers eat at the place they work so they can personal recommendations. The wine list was great, we did not look at the dessert menu as we had to take doggy bags home with us."
