A word from Art and Soul
Four years after Celebrity Chef Art Smith opened Art and Soul, the Capitol Hill restaurant underwent a refresh and re-opened in late February 2013. In addition to beautiful herringbone wood floors, textured walls, and unique artwork, you'll also enjoy an exciting new menu. Our approach is driven by our chefs’ Southern roots. We serve simple honest food and partner with like-minded farmers, artisans and growers to provide products that are sustainably and responsibly sourced, whenever possible.

With celebrated two-time James Beard award winning Chef Art Smith as chef/owner, this Capitol Hill restaurant has received national and local acclaim for its "Food for the Soul" - modern regional cuisine with southern accents.

Diner Reviews
  • "My food arrived over cooked and cold. Also the case with my guest - his steak was over cooked. We had attentive wait staff until a large group arrived, suddenly our server was too busy to get our food out quicky or attend to requests from my small party of 3."

  • "I'm not a fan of upscale Southern cuisine, usually it disappoints. I would say that this is definitely superior in that category. It is quite pricey for this type of food, but our starters and mains were done very nicely, no complaints for what we ordered and got, and I'm pretty hard to please."

  • "Upon arriving in DC, we dined at Art and Soul (which is located in the Liaison Hotel, where I had a room) for convenience. We went back for almost every meal during our stay for the pleasure of dining there! The dining room is pleasant, but unimpressive, but the food is superb. The menu offers upscale comfort food, highlighting fresh, local ingredients. The chef's southern roots are evident, but the menu is creative and emphasizes the fresh flavors of seasonal foods. The servers are knowledgeable and helpful, without being pretentious or overly solicitous. Desserts are imaginative and RICH! One is more than enough for two people. The wine list is complete and offers a range of prices. We enjoyed every bite of every meal!"

  • "Construction. Noisy loud. Nerve racking . Hard to converse."

  • "I ate here with a couple of business colleagues and the food was uneven. The appetizers we ordered (tomato salad, crab cakes) were fairly good, although there was tendon in the crab cakes. The entrees were universally disappointing. I ordered the stuffed trout and my colleagues both had the halibut, all recommended by our server. My trout was bland mush and neither of my colleagues finished their entrees."

  • "We were to say the least, disappointed, based on past experience last in D.C. Two years ago and in Chicago four years ago. Kitchen specialty, fried chicken wasoverdon and dry. Service was only average. Do not plan to return here soon."

  • "went back twice in one business trip. tasty, well prepared food served by a very helpful and cheerful waitress."

  • "I've been a couple of times for weekend brunch now. It's consistently the best food and the best service around. And, for now, it isn't packed."

  • "Don't get your hopes up by looking at the menu. It's under-seasoned, overpriced, disappointing food. Corn bread by Sara Lee. Venison tartar by Fancy Feast. Gumbo by Zatarain's."

  • "Party of four for business dinner. Wine list was expansive and beer list had some very tasty yet uncommon selections. We had the Table appetizer which was an eclectic mix of good - deviled eggs, salmon smoked in house, a pickled mixture of carrots, jalapeno peppers, pickles - very tasty with toast points, and pimento cheese spread. I had the tuna special which was well seasoned with a side of mixed vegetables and greens - all well seasoned an tasty. Will definitely go again."

  • "Is it a great foodie spot or is it a neighborhood bar? (I ask because the folks filling every bar stool musta been served their custom cocktails long before we were served the special cocktails we ordered.) I go for the food. It is good. But our most recent visit was for our wedding anniversary and the ambiance was not good. And what is up with the noise? The service was good."

  • "Art and Soul undoubtably had delicious food. I went there for brunch and had lemon pancakes, which were delicious. However, I paid WAY too much for 3 pancakes and some fruit. Additionally, coffee and tea was incredibly overpriced. I paid $6 for a tea bag and a cup of hot water. If you don't mind spending money, it's not a bad place to visit. However, if you are price conscious, I would shy away from Art and Soul."

  • "The service is impeccable, and the food was fabulous; even the salad!!"

  • "The food was wonderful and a bit different (however rich). Drinks were delicious and unique, ambiance was just o.k. Bar was extremely loud due to soccer match being played. Service was excellent. This was a special occasion meal for a friend and I while we were visiting the district. Art and Soul was recommended in The Unofficial Guide, Washington D.C. 12th edition. I made reservations a few weeks in advance and it did not disappoint. The web site made it quite easy. As it turned out the restaurant was located across from our hotel, so it was extremely well-located!"

  • "A warm and welcoming environment with excellent food and service - and, to my delight, flexible and gluten free options!"

  • "This is the place. My dog enjoyed cool water and a frozen bone, while I enjoyed brunch. The staff was attentive and friendly, the venue was nice, laid out well, and clean. Food was also great. Would recommend!"

  • "Sunday morning brunch menu is delicious and the portions are generous. Service was somewhat slow (seemed like there was some loss in efficiency due to disorganized server coverage). Dining logistics aside, the food was excellent."

  • "We came to Art and Soul for a family dinner and the service was excellent. Kenya was very attentive and personable. Our only complaints were that the menu was very limited. Not a big variety. And they were a little overpriced. Other than that we had a great experience. Thanks!"

  • "Lunch was great. Though hot outside our attentive waiter did not forget us and our salad with a beautifully crispy outside and creamy inside salad was great. My BBQ sandwich was tangy and just right."

  • "The service last night was awful. We had a lengthy wait even though we had a reservation. Food service slow and I won't ever go back there!!! EVER!!!"

  • "Art Smith continues to provide food that shines and tastes so good. From a simple burger, to fresh soups, to fish and shrimp just off the boat. Don't miss the deviled eggs, or the baby cakes! :)"

  • "The food lacked flavor. Was expecting much better good!"

  • "The food was terrific and it was a perfect brunch atmosphere on the patio. The staff were very kind to my toddler."

  • "We visited for our parent's anniversary and had a wonderful time! The waitstaff went out of their way to make my parents (who are out-of-towners) feel special. The food was amazing. Shrimp and grits is a favorite of ours and this was one of the best I've ever eaten."

  • "Had brunch there on a Saturday and it was delicious! The complimentary scones are to die for and my chicken and waffle was lighter than I expected which was perfect."

  • "Thank you to Harry for such great service! The view from the patio was beautiful and the food was fantastic."

  • "Since my wife and I couldn't celebrate our anniversary on our wedding day we came here for a preanniversary dinner. Good choice. Good food, good drinks. The only thing it was was just a little too warm but that may have been because of the crowd. Overall good dinner!"

  • "This is where to go when you need real comfort food, done right. Just the perfect touch of fresh ingredients coupled with low country preparation. You cannot go wrong with the corn bread, and the sides are simply sinful - Mac and cheese, potatoes and gravy, greens, and grits - and enough to pass around the table for everyone. The fried chicken for two is memorable, and certainly more than enough. The wine list provides plenty of options to pair with everything, and the wait staff is very knowledgable about the wines, which is extremely helpful. Have dined here many times, and have never been disappointed."

  • "overall enjoyed it. food was good, but on the whole a bit expensive. that's probably due to proximity to capitol hill. lots of good southern food in dc, so i'd probably recommend investigating those options too."

  • "My wife and I recently went to Washington DC for the first time. A week's vacation that followed our wedding anniversary. When I made the reservation, I mentioned that it was our anniversary. When we arrived we were treated like royalty. JR, the general manager and Kenya our waitress, were extremely friendly and helpful. Always attentive and helpful in making menu decisions. Then delivering what I believe is the best fried chicken I have eaten, followed by fantastic desserts. The best meal we had in DC. I highly recommend Art and Soul."

  • "Went there and waited 10 minutes for a server, he was busy socializing with 2 other tables. When he came to our table he said r u ready to order now. Food ok service sucks. Art was there he actually directed the server to the other two tables and away from ours."

  • "I went for brunch on a Saturday with my partner. The establishment was easy to find and not too far from Union Station or Capital Hill. I had the Shrimp and grits and it was divine and worth savoring. The scones that morning were apricot and candied ginger, a winning and delicious combination. My partner had the banana waffle with the oh-so-delicious tres leches (I think) sauce. The service was a little slow towards the end of the meal, but I'm finding that's pretty common in a lot of DC establishments. I wholly recommend brunch there to anyone!"

  • "Food was expensive but good. Dining experence was average and the service poor. Waitress was very slow and clueless. Ether lower prices and qualty of food to match dining experience or hire more experienced staff."

  • "They were very accommodating with a last minute reservation, and they managed to please my six year old (cod fritters), my 79 year old and everyone in between. Thanks!"

  • "The online menu was out dated. The service was amazing but the food was not that good. Their sides were better then their entrées. It would not be a place I would like to return I was disappointed to an extreme but the server did try to make up for it. The dessert was good. "

  • "Art & Soul is a lovely restaurant. The food varied from good to wonderful (our fish was outstanding). However it seemed that once we declined to order a bottle of wine, which we never intended to do (so it's not like we ask the waiter lots of questions and then didn't order one), the waiter completely lost interest in our table, while fawning over the couple at the next table who had ordered an expensive bottle. Meanwhile, I received a cocktail that was almost entirely ice and our waiter was rude when asked to clear an empty dish. Bottom line - great food, but either order an expensive bottle of wine or expect to be ignored. And to be clear, we did spend nearly $100, so we weren't skating out with a $20 check!"

  • "Overall a good dining experience. Drinks were a little slow, and the waiter commented that he tried them all before they came to the table so that they would always be the same "strength," which we thought was odd. My food was good but not really anything noteworthy, but my friend loved her egg Benedict with bacon. Wasn't very crowded. Had a lovely patio to eat outside. "

  • "What a great restaurant! We had breakfast here on the Friday morning and my granola was delicious and my husband could not believe how good his eggs Benedict were. We went back on Friday night as we were staying at the hotel and too lazy to go anywhere else. The Swordfish was excellent as was my husband's steak and the chocolate beet dessert was seriously yummy. But best of all was the service at both breakfast and dinner. The staff knew the menu and the ingredients, they were helpful, friendly and efficient. We wish we'd booked our dinner table earlier and been able to sit outside as it was a lovely evening. I would wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant, it's not too stuffy and the food is divine."
