A word from Aroma Kitchen & Winebar
Join us at Aroma Kitchen & Winebar, a sultry East Village Italian restaurant and wine bar that focuses on pairing delicious market-fresh food with superior quality wines. Our intent is to let our guests expand their taste horizons and indulge in hand-picked indigenous wines in a setting that is as intimate as it is relaxed.
Vito, our Chef and Owner, is from the southern Italy (Basilicata) and has a passion for food and wine that is surpassed only by his love of eating and drinking and his desire to share his experiences. At Aroma Kitchen & Winebar, he showcases modern and regional Italian dishes. Guests come for our authentic meatballs (his mother's recipe), tender, charred Portuguese octopus, and above all, for the signature, homemade pastas like strascinati, busiate, and pici toscani, among other plates.
Two private, secluded dining rooms in the wine cellar are available for private parties.

Diner Reviews
  • "I have dined at Aroma multiple times and it never disappoints!! The food is always delicious and the service always knowledgeable and friendly. Eating there is like being invited to a close friend's home for dinner."

  • "I really enjoyed dining at Aroma. The spot is definitely for individuals who r interested in enjoying each other and good wine and food. Background music at appropriate sound level to enjoy conversations without having to yell or lean forward. Excellent food dishes. However I did not see a pairing of wine and cheeses on the menu. Friendly and attentive staff."

  • "I discovered Aroma Kitchen by accident a few months ago. My husband and I have now eaten there twice, the second time with another couple, and everyone's food was delicious both times. I'm pretty sure everyone's plates were licked clean. They have a wonderful Italian wine list, and the wait staff is knowledgeable enough to help you pick a wine. The two dining rooms - one on the main floor, and once in the basement - which also appears to be the wine cellar, are small and charming. The acoustics are good - so if you want to have a conversation over dinner without shouting, this is the place to go."

  • "When I saw this place was recognized by Michelin and reasonably priced, I knew we had to try it. The food was delicious and the service fabulous. My only wish was that instead of bacon on the beet ravioli, they had used pancetta, it would have been way better."

  • "A charming space with a very interesting wine list, and a number of good selections by the glass makes this the ideal wine bar, but not a good restaurant. The kitchen used to turn out quite tasty and deftly-seasoned food, but there must have been a change in the chef, because fried artichokes were sodden and greasy, salads poorly or under-seasoned. Avoid the linguini with clams: it should have been richly coated with butter or oil, but only a miserly dribble of oil was offered at table, and the dish was weighed down by so many whole fennel seeds that the flavor of the clams was completely masked. Go for great wine and nibble bar food."

  • "My wife and I were looking for a last minute reservation on a Friday evening in this neighborhood. What a great find this turned out to be. Food was outstanding and service was even better. Excellent affordable wine list. The special bean soup with mussels was out of this world!!!"

  • "Dining experience was fantastic. Small intimate room...great food and great service!"

  • "This is a fine Italian restaurant with great food. My only comment is that it would be nice to have waiters that actually speaks Italian and understand Italian cuisine. The waiter I've had there is a little difficult to understand. He has a heavy Spanish accent and its difficult to understand his English or Italian. The waiter helps set the mood for the meal so I think this is an important point."

  • "This is such a charming place. The back room has great atmosphere. Friendly service and great Italian food!"

  • "We liked the cozy look of the back dining room. We were not so happy with the low, hard chair to high table ratio. My husband had to sit on a pillow for comfort and to raise up to acceptable eating level. The olive plate was delicious as was the bread that came with it. The olive oil was nondescript. The mussels and clams appetizer was tasty although a bit of grit and not hot, which was a shame since the broth was delicious. The gnudi also delicious. Lamb ragu pasta spicey and wonderful. Pork chop milanese nice enough, but why panko? Too hard for my taste and not very Italian. Crispy Brussels sprouts-- deep fried and oily. The wine was delicious, but need more reasonably priced options."

  • "This is a very attractive "old world" looking restaurant hidden away on a quiet stretch of East 4th Street. The Italian offerings a good with many unusual choices and with a well-chosen wine list that is also full of unusual (for New York) choices. The service is very accommodating and attentive."

  • "Lovely wines, as befits a wine bar. Order wines from Piedmont. And don't miss the grilled octopus. Efficient waitstaff, including a knowledgeable and gracious bar/wine tender. At the very least, come for the wine bar part of the restaurant."

  • "We made a reservation for two and got there perfectly on time. They had sat aside the worst table in the restaurant, placed pretty much in the corridor taking to the main restaurant room. That could have been acceptable perhaps for a walk in, but certainly not for a reservation. We left and went somewhere else. Overall, we were not impressed by the restaurant anyway, it looks so much better in pics than in reality"

  • "I've eaten here several times before going to the Public. The food and service are excellent. My only comment would be they need some more reasonably priced wines. "

  • "Went for an early pre-theater dinner with five people, including my 90-year-old dad. The restaurant couldn't have been more accommodating, and the entire experience was outstanding. It began with an unusual wine selection. We tried an Italian 'Sauvignon Blanc,' which was memorable. Our waiter then suggested an assortment of antipasti, which included everything from olives and rocket salad to exceptional meatballs. The rest of the meal was consistently good. We tried several pasta dishes and main courses. Because we were short on time, we ordered the house gelati and sorbetti....also outstanding. "

  • "We always are excited to go to Aroma when we visit the city. We were in town for our 10th anniversary and had 3 friends with us. We were seated at t the fro t window, but the door stayed open each time so done entered and it was freezing cold. Our waitress couldn't find a sparkling wine by the glass at a wine bar! Se was far less than attentive for our drinks, Ad it was basically a big letdown. Will look for a new fave place. When you have a place out of the thousands available in NYC that you always visit on trips from Boston, that means something, but it is obviously time to get back out there with all the other options that we always loved!"

  • "My friend and I swung by very early after work and before the theatre, so there was literally us and one other table of 5 in the whole restaurant. It's a very cute space, though. We only had drinks, apps and one entree since it was so early, but everything on the menu looked delicious. What we had was very good, so I can't wait to get back and try more of the menu. "

  • "Beware of narrow uneven steps going into a dungeon. Now worth the effort, though the food and wine are good."

  • "I thought the food was mediocre,at best.We were kept along time waiting for our food. The main level is a small space and it was very loud.I would return."

  • "The ambiance is cozy and comfortable, your family's chic flat in Rome that you've never been to;) The food is executed perfectly without being too fussy; just fresh, quality ingredients speaking for themselves. And the wine list - always meticulously chosen and divine."

  • "Great place to have dinner before or after theater - opens early closes late"

  • "I had read a review where someone else complained about the table they were given, and I disregarded it. However we were seated at a table that was opposite a door that led to the outside. It was freezing every time the door opened - which was A LOT. The table was also right in the door way so every waiter had to pass us to get to any table. It was distracting and left a really bad taste in my mouth - I don't even remember the service or the food."

  • "On a snowy evening, we were treated to a wonderful meal at Aroma Kitchen & Winebar. You enter Aroma through the comfortable bar area at the front, and proceed to a cosy room with fireplace and exposed brick walls. Complementary olives, bread and olive oil were the best I have ever had. The olives ('brined' on site) had a deliciously subtle flavour. The olive oil was the purest I've tasted in a restaurant setting. The feather-light bread was perfect for dipping. The stacked, warm beet salad had a lovely kick to it (the cheese element) and the black pasta with seafood was light yet very flavourful. The service was very personable, helpful and attentive. It felt more like we were having dinner with friends and that made our evening!!"

  • "The food was delicious. The service was attentive 100 % of the evening. We felt as though we were in a friends home."

  • "Party of ten in the separate downstairs dining area. Nice surrounding though small--waitress was very attentive and the food was very good. Try the Aperitivo--it was worth the extra $15.00--the 3 flight of wines were very good."

  • "We loved the ambiance (narrow roooms, wood floors, old white brick). It felt like we were eating at someone's (very classy) house in part because the waitstaff (a young man from Southern Italy) was charming and welcoming without being intrusive. The whole place had a wonderfully friendly, neighborhood vibe even though people seemed to come from all over. Go early if you'd like to get a table. Both the winebar and the back restaurant started filling up quite a bit beginning at 7 and definitely by 8. The food was good but not knock-your-socks off fabulous. At least what I had. Grapefruit with octopus just didn't hang together. Seemed kind of arbitrary. However, the pasta dish with merguez was delicious. I'd go again and choose better."

  • "I've been going to Aroma for the last four years. Every single time, the restaurant delivers. Probably the most delicious Italian food you can find in all of Manhattan, considering it's price and it's personal touch. Whether it's for a special occasion, or a casual dinner and glass of wine, it's easily my go-to place. It's hard to find a reliable spot that you can refer to friends or go to yourself, but Aroma is certainly that place for me."

  • "From the staff to the food to the ambience, Aroma Kitchen wafts warmth and coziness. Our visit with filled with a fresh mozarella, basil and prosciutto salad and ended with hand made gnocchi. Yum! The wine list is plentiful with staff knowledgeable in Italian regional wines and growers. Feel like you are sharing a bottle in your friends home with a visit to Aroma Kitchen."
