A word from Ariel
Ariel is a wine bar and restaurant all rolled into one. Set in a charming turn of the century building you will discover a bright and elegant, buzzy yet stylish atmosphere. The restaurant, refreshingly, is happy to serve up straight forward, unpretentious food, without ceremony. The service has the perfect harmony of professionalism and genuine friendliness. Our well balanced wine list offers delicious wines, many from smaller artisanal producers, with up to 20 choices by the glass. The distinctive local cuisine changes regularly, offering delectable choices like the house smoked salmon salad, the Asian beef tartare, the veal schnitzel, or the braised Kobe short rib. It's an ideal location for a quick lunch, after work glass of wine, or celebratory dinner. Whether you are alone, impressing over business, celebrating with a large party, dropping in before or after the show, or looking for that romantic setting Ariel is where you want to be.

After having my ears blown-out by overly loud techno at the trendy restaurants in Montreal during Grand Prix weekend, my friend and I were looking for a quiet local place. We found reviews of Ariel which were iffy, but we decided to try it anyway. Bottom line, if you are in Montreal do not miss Ariel. A helpful wait and bar staff, nicely appointed table area not overly bright nor dark, quiet but appropriate background music, exceptional food (we had the cheese plate, salads, veal and scallops, creme brûlée and sorbets), and a friendly owner who came around a few times to check on us. After eating at some of the more expensive hot locations in Montreal, I would much rather spend my time at Ariel. Give it a try, I doubt you will regret it.

Fantastic as always. I've been to Ariel many times before, and I continue to immensely enjoy myself every time. The food is delicious - especially the soups! - and always artfully prepared. The wait staff is prompt and pleasant; the ambiance is lovely and the noise level is never above a dull murmur. In addition the owner is exceptionally attentive to his patrons, and always makes a point of engaging with each person who walks through the door. I highly recommend Ariel - you will not be disappointed.

You know you're off to a bad start when the waitress starts with a long list of items that are no longer available on the menu. This on a saturday night at 19:00 and the place is empty. It doesn't get much better when she adds that yours is the only reservation she has for this hot august evening! We were a bit wary so we ordered drinks and appetizers, then we left. Some of us shared a cheese plate that was okay and I had a salad. Can' say much about the food because sh scared us away before we actually tried it!

it was the 1st time we visited the Ariel restaurant and were worried when we found that the place was empty, except for one other table, so we thought there was something wrong with the place. but the food, wine and service were VERY good, so we felt a little sad for for the "management". we certainly hope business picks up.

Loved, loved, loved this restaurant. The food was delicious, creative, fresh and unpretentious. The service was warm, sincere, and efficient. We had a wonderful experience and I can recommend Ariel without hesitation! The salmon appetizer (salmon tartare, smoked salmon, goats cheese and roasted beets) was superb. I wouldn't have thought of arranging those ingredients together, but the combination was outstanding. Three of our party had the sea scallops with cauliflower puree and chorizo - it was so good! A small flaw from the kitchen (forgetting to omit the cheese on one dish) was corrected instantly and without a fuss. We recommended Ariel to four other parties during the Grand Prix. They all loved it and thanked us profusely.

We had a wonderful experience in this hidden away location that deserves a lot more attention. The food was artistically presented but even more important, very well prepared. The risotto was cooked to perfection and the lobster gnocchis were incredibly delicious. The lamb and the duck main courses were also cooked to perfection. The server was impeccable. He was very patient and assisted us with our wine selection.

Well, the bottom line is that we had the restaurant pretty much to ourselves. It was completely empty until another party of 4 arrive. The service was personable and charming. My dining companion had the "salmon rangoons" and I had the beet risotto. Both were absolutely wonderful. I then had the jerked pork belly and my companion the fish with paella. Both were very good. We were able to sit in a wonderful atrium which was a nice bit of bright light in the middle of winter. All in all a wonderful lunch. We had 3 glasses of wine between us, coffee and no dessert. Our entire bill was $100 with tip and tax.

We had a perfect dinner overall, food was delicious (great choice of menu), super nice selection of wine, only negative would be that table next to us was getting special treatment since they seemed to know the owner/manager (they were offered things outside the menu or specials we were not, had bigger wine glasses, etc.), it felt a bit rude but our server was really nice so it didn't matter bother us too much. Great place if you have family in town or friends for an upscale dinner. A bit quiet on a Tuesday though.. Decor super nice ! Would really recommend it !

This is a divine little restaurant tucked away down a short flight of stairs and has a tiny, beautiful terrace. The inside is beautiful as well--richly, elegantly and artfullly done. The wine list is fantastic. The meal was delicious--one of the best meals I had ever had. We started with the gnocchi which were browned in an incredibly rich butter sauce and melted in your mouth. My colleague had the scallops, which were huge and perfectly prepared. I had the lobsterwas simply the best I have had (other than at La Bernadin/NYC). It was delicate and moist, and the citrus butter the perfect companion. We finished with espresso longues and creme brulee--both divine. It was a flawless experience.

The restaurant was about half-full when I arrived. It took 20 minutes before the waitress took our order, another 20 to get our appetizers and, finally, after another 30 minutes, we asked to have our meal "to go" because we would not have time to eat in the restaurant. It took another 15 minutes to get our meals "to go". So, overall, it took 1.5 hours to get a take-out meal. By the time I was able to eat my meal (1.5 hours later) the food, obviously, was sub-standard. However, the appetizer I ordered was extremely good.

I would definitely recommend this restaurant as a wine bar for their exceptional list and overall knowledge. For the food, it is good without being exceptional. Someone who does not go out a lot, I guess it's fine BUT for somebody who has a lot of experience....there are definitely places where you will have more for your money!!! Bar et Boeuf for example... Again, nice decor, very attentive staff who knows wines but food....it's good without being exceptional...

Great atmosphere, with exposed stone walls, cosy nooks. Food was delicious. We were there on a Tuesday night, and there were very few diners. Overall good experience with only two problems: we wanted to share an appetizer and when the waiter (perhaps a little inexperienced) brought us the plate he brought one plate with a tiny helping, and no plates or cutlery for sharing. A few minutes later. looking a little sheepish, he came out with the other half portion - he didn't realize the appetizer had been split in the kitchen and he had to bring out both plates at same time; we wanted to order a half bottle of white but the restaurant seemed to have run out of white in half bottles.

This is a lovely restaurant. We went for our anniversary on a visit to Montreal & Quebec City and enjoyed it so much we decided to return on our last evening of our trip. The food is interesting without being weird - just top quality local ingredients well-prepared & presented in a clean, elegant style. The service couldn't have been more friendly & welcoming. The owner is very enthusiastic & knowledgeable about wine and on both visits spent a good deal of time with us chatting about what wine we might like. He never tried to push us into ordering a wildly expensive wine, just wanted us to find the right wine. Ariel is an attractive restaurant - like the food - pristine, elegant, but also comfortable. It's also a quiet place.

Slow for a Friday night-all seated in the bar section with the TV playing. Waiter was friendly but lacked knowledge about menu. Bartender/Sommelier came over with wine advice and offered us a small taste of one to try. He left and started talking. mixing drinks and helping other diners. He didn't return until we waved him down and asked him about the wine which he brought over without apology. We enjoyed our appetizers and entrees and up to this point things weren't going too badly. We ordered dessert and waited. Finally told us with a shrug that the chef had lost our dessert ticket. Dessert came 30 minutes after ordering and wasn't as described. Bill came without apology or adjustment.

I had the shrimp appetizer, which was delicious, followed by the sea scallops, which were served with the most amazing squash and almond ravioli. Both were beautifully served and absolutely mouth-watering. The restaurant has a lovely soft ambiance. The night we were there they were playing a selection of 80's music, which suited us to a tee. I would definately recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a delicious meal featuring fresh ingredients, uniquely prepared and beautifully presented, in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
