Archetype offers an iconic Americana menu that takes a contemporary out-of-the-box approach to classic dishes from our heritage. Nearly every preparation from our kitchen bares the signature char from our wood-burning grill or is complimented by an infusion of smoke from our wood-burning oven. Dishes feature local, seasonal ingredients, perfect for pairing with a thoughtful selection of regional wines and handcrafted cocktails from our list. The dining room - designed by Archetype founder and renowned architect, Howard Backen, and named as one of the “10 Most Beautifully Designed” by Architectural Digest - reflects distinctive wine country style with a relaxed, comfortable sophistication.

Diner Reviews
  • "One if the best meals I have ever had and I have been to great and notable restaurants."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "Lunch at Archetype was truly spectacular. Wonderful food, service, ambiance. I'd recommend it to anyone. (There was considerable traffic noise in the outer area, but if that had bothered us, we could have chosen the interior.) We had dinner the previous evening at Bottega. There is no comparison - these two places are in entirely different leagues in every respect."

  • "Wonderful meal & ambiance. Terrific staff, friendly with a great knowledge of the ingredients. Soup, salad, grilled fish entrees were impecible. Salmon & halibut dishes are not to be missed. The desserts need a little tweaking. The lemon meringue & strawberry turnover were just OK. The waitress told us later that their ice creams are their forte. Will be returning for another delicious meal in 2 weeks!"

  • "One of the best meals I have ever had. From the hostess who was accommodating to my table request, to the quick food service, to the perfect sliders, wine selections.... amazing."

  • "From the salads to dessert, we were impressed with the creative mix of fresh ingredients- all artfully arranged. The warm snap pea salad Was the highlight of the dinner- a surprise of great textures and flavors! Loved the space too! With a name like Archetype, the interior could have been a little too trendy and cold. The white and bright interior was friendly and softened by the rattan chairs, leather cushions and comfy pillows. The staff was helpful and made good recommendations on dishes and wines. We will definitely return."

  • "If you like a good breakfast, this is the place. We had the bagel and lox and the pancakes, and this restaurant redefined these 2 dishes. Breakfast here is a must and your trip to Napa is incomplete without it."

  • "Love the variety for breakfast, and the coffee pot on the table is really great."

  • "My second time since new management took over. Archetype (what a stupid name) is fine for lunch, but like so many restaurants in Napa Valley, they fall short when it comes to the level of execution one expects for dinner. Salmon was fine.. stuffed chicken inedible....strange tasting. Too many quirky ingredients."

  • "This was our second lunch at Archetype (pka French Blue). Our first was in Feb. 2014 when it was called French Blue. At that visit we were VERY positively impressed with the space, service and delicious food. This time was not so impressive. While the food was good, it was not up to what we had experienced in Feb. The space is still lovely but we missed the sweet plates and signage of French Blue, now replaced with plain white pottery and very contemporary, architectural signage design. The place has lost some of it's charm. There are several other places in the area that will draw us away from Archetype when we next visit the Napa Valley."

  • "Like an artist who chooses his own colorful palette, for his painting...This chef has created his own palette with delicate seasonings.. Fresh, still has the smell of the sea or earth...Clean, every bite soothes your soul and senses...It is a Farm to Table experience in a relaxing homestyle restaurant...Beautiful and tastefully done...."

  • "Beautiful restaurant. Bright and airy. Also very comfortable. Food was great. Our server very professional. Our salads wonderful. My wife's roasted peach salad was one of the best I have every had. My oso buco was enough for two people and my wife's fish was prefect."

  • "We had high expectations since we really liked this restaurant while it was French Blue. Well, they were exceeded! The restaurant itself is delightful; very comfortable seating, great lighting and an architectural gem. The food, however, was the best part. There wasn't a mediocre item to be had. Each dish was savored by all. A must go in the Napa Valley but save it for your last night else you will just be disappointed at the meals to follow."

  • "there are so many outstanding food choices in St. Helena, I would have a hard time recommending Archteype solely on the food. The service, as was the case when it was French Blue, is exceptional. The decor did not change that dramatically so it is still light, bright, contemporary wine country. The biggest disappointment was the food. It was good - not great. Good. With a new chef from Sol Bar at Solage down the road, you would have thought that the food would have been elevated to a higher level with the name change. But it is still just good. If you have a week in wine country and are in the area, nice place to grab a bite (I especially like their weekend brunches). But with only a few days, I'd take a pass."

  • "Took a friend out for her birthday lunch. Our waiter was excellent and well versed on the menu and the decor was delightful and so comfortable. The food was just so so although our dessert was great. Too much batter on the fish (fish and chips). Would try again and order something different."

  • "It was Father's Day night and the rush was over, restaurant was on the quite side. Unfortunately, the staff was not on their "A" Game. Service was slow and kitchen was slow to deliver the food. New menu items were very good with the exception of the shrimp dish, tasted fishy. Bring back the Chocolate Bar, the replacement does not even come close."

  • "Perfect for a Sunday Brunch - started at the small bar with a mimosa. fresh squeezed orange juice and Prosecco. Enjoyed the view of the open kitchen and openness of the restaurant. We sat down to a comfortable table and our waitress was attentive. The meal was excellent and I would suggest the doughnut holes for anyone with a sweet tooth. Had a wonderful time."

  • "We decided to try Archetype for Father's Day brunch. We arrived more than 30 minutes late for our reservation, but the staff were still able to seat us within 5 minutes of arrival - I was very appreciative of that. The ambiance is gorgeous - like a French Country farmhouse. Drinks were great, food was yummy. Only qualm was that the staff seemed confused about table assignments - we had wrong orders brought to our table 3 times only to turn them away stating "we didn't order that". All and all, the experience was great - good location, friendly staff, good food. Would definitely go back!"

  • "I loved everything about this place! I don't eat dairy and the waitstaff was more than happy to accommodate me and offer substitutions. Food was delicious, atmosphere is unique and sophisticated. Would definitely come back! Highly recommend the Bloody Mary!"

  • "food was delicious and well prepared...great selection. Service was shoddy-- not what's expected. We had drinks, wine, apps, main courses, etc... Bill was high we should have had more attention. slow on Refills, no wine poured, dirty plates not cleared, needsome communication when some orders are behind. A bit embarrassing with clients..."

  • "We love the venue, particulay dining on the screened porch on a summer evening. The food is excellent, the menu varied and creative. Servers very nice but not too attentive, service was slow, too much time between courses"

  • "We have dined at this beautiful location on several occasions but this night it seemed way off its game. Very slow service with several empty tables. Wait staff was very cordial as always but food was mediocre and slow. Hopefully just an off night for management and the kitchen. "

  • "Chef Ryder Zetts, with a strong culinary background, creates creative and modern versions of old favorites. They are new and different, yet familiar. For example, his boned pork rib sandwich is a galactic improvement over the seasonal offering of one of the best-known national chains. His strawberry tart, likewise, is light years away from the toaster versions. The lunch is sophisticated yet casual in a beautiful, award winning dining room. Efficient, friendly service and chef often serves the dishes himself. One of the best places in St. Helena. "

  • "Lunch menu was extremely limited. Service was fine. Ordered a glass of wine. The pour was the smallest we had ever seen, however, upon mentioning this we were give a bit more. The food was mediocre at best. I had lamb on flat bread with mint and other seasonings, and the lamb was very dry and had little taste. Would not go there again."

  • "The food was absolutely wonderful!! The service was so-so. Our server kept approaching the table from behind us, forcing us to turn around to when speaking with them. It was very awkward and uncomfortable... even after we'd pulled our chairs together they kept approaching us from behind. Also, we had made a request for a quiet romantic table but no one was concerned about where we were seated. "

  • "We had a reservation here and although there was room at regular tables they initially seated us at a high table with bar chairs ( Not very comfortable for the older folks). We saw the other seats and were then re-seated. Service was then good and we really enjoyed the food and creative menu. Very nice and bright room, nice wine list ( as befitting a Napa restaurant). "

  • "Didn't know about Archeype when I booked but what a terrific surprise. Went for lunch and the menu was so good I didn't know what to pick (don't you love when that happens?) food was terrific, the service fantastic and the décor open and inviting. Had a Meditating Mule - YUM their take on a Moscow Mule made with blackberries. I'll definitely go back!"

  • "The room retains the style and attractiveness befitting its design by a leading Napa architect. Seating is uncomfortable inside and outside, where a marked downslope on the patio feels strange. Service was friendly but somewhat aloof. Food was disappointing given its Solage heritage. Dishes seemed well conceived but execution was lacking and menu descriptions were incomplete. Gnocci were somewhat mushy and the green garlic which dominated the flavor wasn't mentioned on the menu. Halibut was overcooked and the sauce was soupy. An appetizer was dominated by soy sauce, which again wasn't mentioned on the menu. Prices are fairly high. Sister restaurant Solbar is slightly pricier but much better. We won't return to Archetype."

  • "It was the Sat. night of the Memorial Holiday weekend and things were hopping. Service was just outstanding. Food was just outstanding. The décor is even better since the soft redo. A Napa Valley GEM. "

  • "Sat immediately, had a great waiter. Clearly a pro - great service. Food was very good with current preparations. Ramps were a fun thing to see used in the menu as they seem to be all the rage lately. No corkage on one bottle was also nice to see. I would recommend to anyone. It is not an inexpensive restaurant but I did not think it was unreasonable either. "

  • "We traveled from VA to Napa had a great time a local recommended going here for dinner, apparently a food critic was seated next to us, need I say more we waited 40 minutes for our dinner had to beg for additional drinks and were lost in the crowd . I would say several of the assistants did try to help but our waitress was way to involved with the critics and the chiefs issues, overpriced slow and disappointed hope others have a better experience. The restaurant was lovely and the porch was very nice."
