A word from Aravind
Aravind is a modern Kerala restaurant in the heart of greektown. Our Menu combines the flavors of south India with great lakes fish, Canadian seafood and seasonal produce. Our locally sourced philosophy is carried over to our wine list that is rich with VQA gems. "Dungeness-crab biryani is sweet from crab, savoury from saffron – hardly the bland biryani of cheap curry houses. Which Aravind is not." Joanne Kates, The Globe and Mail "I can't think of anyone offering this sort of subtle, refined, contemporary Keralan cooking in the city." James Chatto, jameschatto.com "Dungeness crab biryani is exceptional" Chris Nuttall-Smith, Torontolife

We were underwhelmed with Aravind. The food was just OK. I was excited to try food from a part of India that I wasn't overly familiar with, but it left me wondering why this restaurant has been so applauded. The dosas were spot-on,but no better than I've had before and paid far less. Everything else (breads and spreads, mushroom & augergine curry, pakoras) was mediocre. Overpriced and disappointing.

Excellent food, we found the menu concise and simple. They don’t try to do many things but what they cook they keep it simple. One page menu what a difference! Once you meet the owner you will know why, passion for the food, he even took the time to explain some of the history of the dish we choose. Food is flavorful and well presented; the best way to enjoy is to share the dishes in that way everyone gets to taste the variety of flavors. Looking forward to their summer menu. Note to the owner: don’t lose the passion!

The food was not at all worth the price we paid. Friendly service but it was incredibly slow and extremely expensive for the amount we received in our portions. Our entire table was less than satisfied.

The food was inventive and amazing. The coriander chutney that came with the vegetable pakoras was outstanding. The breads and spreads had real variety - love how they explain everything to you and are very responsive and patient. Great dining experience overall.

Went with a large group and the service was slow. However, when our server came he was very attentive and helpful. Once the food comes though it's fantastic. Really tasty, beautifully presented and spiced. Lots of unique touches - like the pre-dinner snacks they give you and the watermelon ginger palette cleanser. It's not cheap but reasonable for the attention they pay to their food. I have there four times and always enjoy the south Indian food. Highly recommend it. But they need one more server as they become more popular.

Excellent Indian food from Kerala, so lots of fish, coconut, medium spicing. Very informative server/owner gives you cultural background on the various dishes. Creative Indian drinks. A fun and different brunch spot!

This restaurant really knows how to use spices! The food from the Kerala region is very fragrant and flavourful. We hade the main course dosa, the chicken and the paratha. First came an amuse-bouche which had a cheese-like consistency with very interesting spicing (sorry don't remember the name). All the main courses were intelligently flavoured. One problem that night was service from the kitchen. Our appetizers arrived quickly but 50 minutes later we were still waiting for the mains.By that time were getting quite testy. Nobody came over to explain, so we called over one person who explained that their computer had crashed and were trying to catch up. Even so, you shouldn't leave your hungry customers waiting with no explanation!

7-course tasting menu was excellent. Each dish had just the right portion size and each was accompanied by a food involved explanation. There was enough variety and flavour intensity without being too spicy. What a great way to sample a variety of dishes. Loved the hot cumin water! Would definitely go back.

Lovely food and lots of it. Only go there hungry as they bring nibbles, then amuse bouches between courses; when the main course arrived, I'm afraid I wasn't as hungry as I would like to have been which disappointed somewhat. The staff are very friendly, professional and love to discuss the food. We shared a starter of Kerala breads (3 kinds) and 3 delicious dips. Main courses were excellent - a chicken breast dish with excellent spicy sauce, and I had a whole trout baked in a banana leaf - moist and delicious. Wine list is very small but I had a Canadian Riesling which was perfect with spicy food. Water to drink is warm with a hint of cumin - sounds awful but I loved it.

  • Great find

This was a great find. The food is a positive and interesting twist of the traditional Indian food and nice relief. The Mini Dosa and Mixed Breads/Dips were wonderful. The two mains of Chicken and lamb were both fabulous, well presented and large portion. The tastes were all mild but highly enjoyable. The service was outstanding. Attentive, appropriate and dishes arrived at a very nice pace (our experience did not reflect other reviews on slow service). Only suggestion is that dishes are large "single person" and smaller share dishes would enable greater variety and ability to savour all the menu has to offer. We shared the starters and swapped mains. Maybe try a larger group.

We took a group of 11 this time because we were so impressed a few weeks ago. Same approach, some new dishes but the service was excrutiatingly slow. Meals arrived in batches and it left us either being rude to our guests or eating cold food. Its still a nice restaurant but we wont go with a group again.

We have eaten at Aravind on three occasions and the experience was consistently good. Kerala cuisine is distinctly different than the usual Indian fare. It is definitely less heavy but not any less.flavourful. There are many great choices for vegetarians but still plenty of seafood and more recently, they added chicken and lamb to their menu. Aravind is a unique and pleasant dining experience. The food certainly overshadows the ambience, which is plain but pleasant.

Interesting twist on Indian. Seafood and Vegetarian. Less intense on the hot spice and more on combinations of subtle flavours. More of a dining experience than would be expected from the surroundings (amuse bouche, palette cleansing, etc.) Very knowledgeable staff and super friendly chef (the owners dad from Kerala).

I've been to India six times and our dinner at Aravind was the best Indian meal I have ever had. The food and presentation were both amazing. The back patio is an intimate treasure and the service was fabulous - knowledgeable but not intrusive. Truly brilliant and a delightful discovery. If you like cheap Indian buffets - don't go to AravInd. If you're into local ingredients and food that takes time and passion to prepare - get to Aravind as soon as you can!
