Great for Lunch
Best Restaurants in Downtown Chicago
The waitstaff was unfriendly and
unengaged. Not only did we seem to be a "bother", but I couldn't even get a refill of my drink. Our waitress had zero personality. Never smiled. The sushi was just ok. We started wth a few rolls, but after being ignored, decided to get the check and leave. There are plenty of better sushi options in the city."

We went there on a thursday night
at 8. The food was very fresh and tasty, but the restaurant was empty....have to finish our wine bottle quickly because the staff was ready to leave at 9h15!"

After having had many good meals
at AraOn, I must say my last visit was awful. My sushi was soggy, tasteless and just down right bad. It was as if the roll had been frozen. I had 2 pieces of Unagi that were definitely frozen before. My guest had the Steak Salad and said it was good. I hope this was a one time thing because I have had very good food there before."

Ate here on a friday night for a
business meal and was very impressed. Being from CA I'm a bit of a sushi snob. The offerings were excellent quality with nice originality in some of the rolls. (sorry, forgot the names). The sake list was also surprisingly good, with several fine Gingo offerings. Service was unobtrusive, but never wanting. The environment was modern, cool, quiet. My only surprise was that despite being in an active downtown area, it was rather empty for a friday. Great for us, but this restaurant deserves much more attention. Skip the overpriced steakhouses, stop by here for an elegant meal."

My second time bringing clients to
this restaurant for lunch and great place"
Dined on 6/18/2014
I took one of my assistants, who
is non-familiar with Sushi, for a nice lunch. It was a pleasant lunch for both of us and we left full."
Dined on 6/12/2014
The maki was fresh and delicious.
This is one of my favorite lunch spots. Make a reservation though."
Dined on 6/4/2014
I was disappointed that the ONE
thing I wanted on the menu, the very reason I chose this spot for lunch, was unavailable the day I visited (the short rib for the bahn mi sandwich). That drives me crazy when menu items are not available! The chicken teriyaki bento box I ended up with left much to be desired. It was ok but not terribly flavorful and that potato "croquette" type thing that came with it definitely needs to be served with some kind of sauce; it was good but dry. All in all, I'll be back but this was not the best experience for me. The server was nice and apologetic so that was cool; I never blamed her anyway, though."

Delicious Sushi in the Financial
District. It happened to be across the the street from my hotel and next time I am in Chicago I WILL go out of my way if I have to, to eat here again! Vietnamese spring roll app was simple yet extremely flavorful (and quite large, 6 big pieces). And we ordered 4 different sushi rolls - can't complain about any of them! They had two bars as well, great for a date! Art is amazing too!"
Dined on 5/17/2014
As usual the food was excellent
however this is the only occasion that I've ever received the bill before any food arrived. It took well over 25 minutes to receive our order at lunch. Very confusing, little in way of an explanation or apology. "
Dined on 5/8/2014
The sushi was good. The Bento
Box was blase. Nothing horrible, just nothing compelling either."
Dined on 4/17/2014
Pricey but tasty. If you're
looking for a better sushi option than Tokyo lunchbox, this is your place."
Dined on 4/9/2014
This is one of the most
consistently good lunch options in the Loop. The salmon bi bim bop is very good (albeit quite non-traditional)."
Dined on 4/9/2014
I've been walking past this
restaurant for what could be years (I don't know when they opened) and had no idea it was there until I found it on OpenTable the other day. Service was prompt and friendly. Although the portion size seemed just a little small for the price on the meal I ordered... it was delicious and I cleaned my plate. It's not somewhere I'd go every day, but I'll definitely return in the future. There were a number of menu items that looked interesting that I'd like to try. This restaurant wasn't very crowded and I was able to make a reservation during the lunch rush, less than 1 hour in advance. I think this is directly due to no one realizing this restaurant exists."
Dined on 4/2/2014
Chatted with the owner. Very nice
man. Regular sushi rolls were great. Specialty sushi rolls weren't anything special. Great location downtown, but easy to miss the sign. Great service."

My wife and I were visiting
Chicago and wanted to find a sushi place close to the hotel we were staying at. Oddly enough, there was one right across the street. What we experienced was far and away better than what I was expecting. Our waiter, Sergei, was so polite and fast. The owner? Jimmy was accommodating and appreciative. Ara On is a french inspired Japanese restaurant. I wish we were more hungry or we would have tried what looked to be amazing options on the dinner list - we stuck to sushi rolls. The seaweed salad was top notch. The California Crunch roll was very good. We eat sushi at least one a month, and this restaurant was a very good option. We loved the ambiance and the beautiful wood-crafted tables. Definitely go!"

I enjoyed my lunch and thought the
shrimp salad was excellent!"
Dined on 3/18/2014
A menu that caters to all with
vibrant flavors and colors to tempt the palate. Well prepared and knowledgeably served in a lively yet not too noisy environment."
Dined on 3/14/2014
I went here with a couple
colleagues for lunch. We got 3 sushi rolls and it was more than enough food. The sushi was really good. We were able to get in and out in an hour. I would recommend it for lunch in the Loop."
Dined on 3/11/2014
It's a good alternative spot for
business lunches when you're used to going to basic places like South Branch and Sienna Tavern. Even if certain people don't like sushi, you can get basic Asian dishes for picky eaters. Good for vegetarians, too!"
Dined on 3/11/2014
Food is fantastic here! Only have
been two times but both times no one was disappointed with their food. It's a bit pricy but defiantly very tasty. I had the scallop bento box. So good! Service is a little sporadic but food came out in a resonable time. The have a fairly large tea list but were out of a lot of their options. I got my third choice. I had told the waitress that I was deciding between which tea to get, she should have told me which ones they were out of as to not waste time."
Dined on 3/3/2014
Every time I eat here, the maki is
fresh, sharp to the taste buds and a total pleasure to eat."
Dined on 2/28/2014
I went in for sushi after work and
was completely disappointed with the food. The best part of the restaurant was how attentive the back wait staff was."
Dined on 2/27/2014
We ate here for Valentine's dinner
and loved it. Oysters were amazing and different, green tea creme brulee is a must. Romantic setting, dim lights and pretty quiet. Next visit to Chicago will probably include a stop back here."
Dined on 2/15/2014
It's nice to be able to get great
sushi for lunch. Service was slow. Some tables are very odd shaped and aren't conducive to a business lunch."
Dined on 2/14/2014
I do like going here. The food is
reasonably priced; avoid the bento - too much fried food. Order the donburi or dol sot bibimbap - both are much better values."
Dined on 2/13/2014
AraOn is a wonderful place to have
lunch or dinner. It's calm. The service is excellent. The food is generally very good, with the sushi tending toward excellent (especially the tuna sampler.) They have wonderful hot tea and a nice cava by the glass. In a city filled with high-energy eateries, AraOn is a great place to chill while you dine."
Dined on 2/4/2014
Good food, and you can almost
always get a table. They have a nicely-designed space, and their menu is interesting without being too intimidating for your not-as-adventurous colleagues."
Dined on 1/24/2014
love this place... reasonable
price for such great food and service on a lunch hour!"
Dined on 1/14/2014
This restaurant had good service
and food. The place was not crowded and very quiet. Good place to take a date."
Dined on 1/10/2014
Rare spot in the loop for great
lunch. Food is consistently good"
Dined on 1/10/2014
Have dined here several times -
usually for sushi which is very good. Tried the sandwich today and also very good. Sightly on the higher price end for everyday lunch, but food is worth it and overall, I think a better overall experience than others on the same block."
Dined on 1/3/2014
The place was really very
appealing inside, we were there on a cold rainy day, pre-opera. While my companion waited for me, the waitress brought her a sake, very nice and thoughtful. Service as very good, except maybe this was a kitchen issue, the appetizer came after the dinner, and we were not given the choice to cancel or substitute another dish since the food was out of sequence. Did not like that the tempura came without dipping sauce, and when we asked for it was told it was drizzled over the top. I would probably not opt to go here again, the food is not horrible but also not wonderful. Maybe I had an off night."
Dined on 12/21/2013
All three of us gave this
restaurant a huge thumbs up!"

Working in the Loop, it's a
struggle to find a creative alternative for lunch. Look no further than AraOn if you like Asian food. They have a large and diverse menu of Japanese and Asian fusion dishes. I've been many times and never had a bad meal or poor service. The atmosphere also offers a nice respite from a tough day at the office. The room is peaceful with a good energy. It's also a great place to go for a private work lunch. The seating offers a lot of booths and tables that aren't stacked on-top of each other, so you can talk comfortably without concern about being overheard by your neighbors. I look forward to getting back to AraOn soon."
Dined on 11/27/2013
love going here for lunch... the
food is great, the service fantastic and a great change of pace from the typical lunch eateries."
Dined on 11/27/2013
great place for a good lunch with
clients or vendors"
Dined on 11/19/2013
And was amazed at the consistent
service and options for food to fit everyone's dietary needs."
Dined on 11/19/2013
We've been coming to Ara On for
over a year and for the money, you won't find a better sushi restaurant in Chicago. The fish is fresh and prepared perfectly - every time. The wine list is ok but the sake selection is fantastic. The servers are very professional and very friendly. This is a go-to place for sushi if you want a more relaxing/quieter atmosphere. There's a great sushi bar area for more casual dining and the dining area tables/booths is spread out comfortably. You won't be packed in like sardines here (unlike most other Sushi places Chicago). Its the perfect place for that after-work sushi craving."
Dined on 11/4/2013
I frequently choose this
restaurant for clients or professional acquaintances. The food is fresh, well-prepared and consistent. The sushi is always good and my personal favorite is the Bi Bim Bop with Salmon. Our waitress, Karen, is delightful and attentive without being too much!"
