A word from AR Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines
In our signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, Chef Jeff Jackson showcases, fresh market driven seafood, meats, produce and dairy products.
The menu is determined and influenced by what is available at any given time during the various seasons. Certain farms have been commissioned to produce items specific to the Lodge. Local small fish and seafood companies who deal in regional Southern California and Baja "catches" are utilized, as well as other west coast purveyors.
Out of respect for the quality of the foodstuffs available, the cooking is somewhat restrained in order to take advantage of the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients.
Because of this more "hands off" approach and the use of simple seasonings, various olive oils, and intense broths and juices as flavoring mediums, the dishes retain their nutritional integrity as well.

We met our best friends for dinner just before sunset. Our table gave us a great view of the gold course, the ocean and the sunset. We started with a cheese plate and it was very good. I had a New York steak and it was outstanding. Our server was great. We shared two deserts. The whole evening was perfect.

Great, knowledgable servers. Flavorable, wonderful food. View is over pool, golf course and the pacific in the distance. Beautiful. We sat outside and it was perfect. When we left, we walked through the inside dining room, it was louder than we would have enjoyed. Beautiful furnishings and some seating with unique oval tables with curved bench seating. Worth the trip.

I requested a birthday cake , and they brought us a dessert menu as usual. So I asked knowing my surprise was failed, and they said they're going to put a dessert on a birthday plate. And finally brought us a cake on a plain white plate with even no candle. Disappointed

My husband and I felt there was way too much butter and salt in the meal. For a restaurant that prides itself in farm to table, the fat and salt that gets added kind of nixes out the healthy food. The service and decor were top notch and the food choices and presentation were great, minus our comments.

Overall a very nice experience. On this night, they were way too busy for the staff, resujlting in less than stellar service. Waitress was very service-oriented, just way too over worked to provide the level of service one should expect and get from this upscale restaurant. It was clearly a management problem, not a server problem.

We ate here for the first time on our anniversary. It was a quiet Sunday night (we lucked out). Service was attentive and very professional. The food was phenomenal. Possibly the best in San Diego County and one of our favorites of all time (incl. three star Michelin's in New York, France, and Italy.

My friends and I had a wonderful Sunday lunch at AR Valentien. As expected, the menu was sensational which made ordering a challenge. Our food was excellent from start to finish. Having been to this restaurant many times and considering it one of the very best in San Diego, I was disappointed in the service. The waiter had a cocky attitude. Clearing plates while one of my guests was still enjoying her lunch was unpleasant and intrusive. Usually the service is world class, but not this time.

AR Valentien offers fantastic food in a romantic and scenic setting. The Craftsmen design of the The Lodge and the restaurant make it feel warm and intimate. Menu choices may be very traditional (steak, seafood, pork, chicken, duck), but our orders were delicious (scallops and salmon). The staff is attentive without being intrusive and the view from our table was gorgeous. Great spot for any special occasion.

This was our first time at AR Valentien, which was recommended to us by a friend. We went for lunch and sat outside on the balcony. I ordered a small steak on arugula and tomatoes in a vinagrette; my husband ordered the crab salad. Both were delicious and beautifully presented.

Our second time here in recent months. AR Valentien is a very special place and the service is excellent. The food on this visit was good - but not exceptional. The fruit in the stone fruit salad wasn't very ripe, the pork was rather bland, the vegetable in the vegetarian plate were not very exciting (carrots and a corn succotash-like preparation excellent; quinoa bland and unseasoned). The wine list (all US wines) is quite creative and reasonably priced. Of note, the restaurant will prepare a vegetarian platter if requested - this was excellent on our last visit.

Food was excellent - we both had the tasting menu with accompanying wines - four courses but small portions so that we didn't feel overwhelmed. Next time we'd probably skip the wines and just have a glass of wine - but it was interesting to taste new and delicious wines. Expensive but absolutely worth it. Especially loved the lamb meatball appetizer, crab tortellini in some kind of butter/saffron sauce and veal tenderloin entree.

We loved the three pate appetizer! It was large enough to be my entrée! The duck two-ways was great, so juicy and tasty. The scallop entrée was enough to feed two people, however my 15-year-old son ate the entrée dish himself. The scallops were perfectly cooked, not rubbery at all. My daughter felt adventurous and tried the Grouper which she loved. Since we were stuffed, we only ordered one dessert and the trifle was the winner! The chocolate and salted caramel combo was fantastic. We were pleasantly surprised with the complimentary dessert platter. My husband loved the mini-cupcakes! We brought our own wine, which our server decanted. Service was fantastic.

We had a very good meal here. I recommend the squash blossom starter: very tasty, with just the right amount of lemon-ricotta stuffing. Our entrees were the pork loin and the halibut. The pork was delicious, though unexpectedly medium-rare, which can be an issue for some people (including me). My husband enjoyed the halibut very much, but I found it to be both slightly overcooked and far too heavy on the fennel/licorice dimension. Service was spot-on.

The setting here is absolutely divine. If you sit outside, you're overlooking a pool immediately below, the golf course in the near distance and the Pacific in the far distance. Since this is San Diego, it's probably a perfectly sunny day. The peach and Humboldt fog cheese salad was incredible. The hamburger was solid. Service was good, but it could have been more prompt at times.

The chef is know for his house made charcuterie items and inventive farm to table menu items. We were not disappointed. It was our anniversary, and they made a specially plated dessert for us. Looking out over the greens to the sea, seated in the beautifully appointed dining room, the feeling was quite romantic even at lunch. When we think of an elegant, flavorful meal, AR Valentien is always at the top of our special occasion list.

Sat on the patio during a glommy afternoon in La Jolla. Actually rained on us which was actually kind of cool. $36 for a glass of wine from a $40 bottle, way out of line. Ordered a few appitizers and they were just average. Pizza covered in parsely just doesn't make much sence to me. The prices they charge are way too high for the quality of food. Waiter was not real with it either. We asked for something to enhance the food and he tried to tell us why we didn't need it. "We already added cheese."

We stopped in for breakfast after a trip to LaJolla. The restaurant and lodge are beautiful in the Craftsman style started in 1860 and the Plein Air collection owned by AR Valentien is also quite nice. The breakfast was wonderful especially the lemon ricotta pancakes and the Neiman Ranch bacon extra crisp. The view of the golf course is excellent.
