A word from AR Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines
In our signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, Chef Jeff Jackson showcases, fresh market driven seafood, meats, produce and dairy products.
The menu is determined and influenced by what is available at any given time during the various seasons. Certain farms have been commissioned to produce items specific to the Lodge. Local small fish and seafood companies who deal in regional Southern California and Baja "catches" are utilized, as well as other west coast purveyors.
Out of respect for the quality of the foodstuffs available, the cooking is somewhat restrained in order to take advantage of the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients.
Because of this more "hands off" approach and the use of simple seasonings, various olive oils, and intense broths and juices as flavoring mediums, the dishes retain their nutritional integrity as well.

We are locals who just never got around to trying this place. We went for our anniversary. The feel is rustic and clubby. The service was perfect- attentive without being intrusive. Everything we ordered was absolutely outstanding and memorable. I had an appetizer of lobster with squash blossom tempura that I will never forget. I could have eaten just that all night. My duck was perfect. My strawberry dessert was perfect. My husband had the tasting menu and everything was delicious and interesting. The evening was perfect. We will be back.

I had not dined at AR Valentien since they'd originally opened so was pleasantly surprised to find it even nicer than I recalled upon taking my niece there recently for her birthday dinner. That day's menu included many different options (we chose the duck two ways and Alaskan fish) with plenty of farm to table ingredients... plus some unexpected treats like the chef's scrumptious amuse bouche, refreshing lime raspberry sorbet palate cleanser and decadent mini-dessert quartet plate. I truly cannot wait to return!

This place is always nice, and the service is good. However, the food used to be excellent, and now it is just good. Also, the wine list is a bit embarrassing for a restaurant of this level. As an example, the half bottle list has some really low end wines being sold at unusually high mark-ups, when the half bottle list at higher end establishments typically showcases very good wines.

This was the first visit to this outstanding restaurant for me. My Brother suggested the spot, but he had not been back in a few years. We were both thrilled with every aspect of this dining experience. The decor, placement of booths, menu choices, presentation, service and value were incomparable. We are looking forward to returning and working our way through all the tempting choices. Bravo to A R Valentien. I am also a collector of fine plein air artwork so I appreciated the nod to history and honoring this local artist.

A more miss than hit restaurant. Its rather bland and uninspired food is trying to be special but can barely be called above average. For a hotel of this caliber, we are expecting more... However, the mostly older and well-to-do patrons don't seem to mind. This review is based on their lunch offerings (which sounded interesting on paper). Maybe dinner time is a different story, but we felt hardly inspired to give it another try later.

From the amuse bouche (hamachi crudo) to our first course (smoked red trout; "garden" salad w/ fresh peas, herbs, leeks) to our main plates (pan roasted duck breast) followed by cheese plate (CA artisanal) & finished with a complimentary dessert array from the pastry chef....an exquisite meal!

My wife very much enjoyed the swordfish, the service was outstanding and the ambience was very good - so altogether I can recommend the restaurant. However, I must say that the New York Strip steak was a poor cut of meat - tough, with gristle. Avoid the steak and you will enjoy dining at AR Valentien restaurant at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA.

We celebrated my husband's birthday, with friends, out on the patio, overlooking the pool and golf course. The view was lovely, the dinner was wonderful and the service was excellent. The kale salad and the asparagus soup were delicious and the main course fish was perfectly prepared. We had the cheesecake for dessert, which was the first time they had it on the menu and it was wonderful. I would highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions.

The menus change daily based on fresh ingredients; hence the lack of official dinner menu on the website. Prices were very reasonable (25-45 mains, 12 appetizers). We each ordered one main, however my side was large enough to split and they had all these smallish courses that we had no idea were coming. The breads were amazing and our server was excellent at helping us select. We would definitely return and if you're a larger person like myself that worries you'll get a tiny little serving, be prepared to leave some on the plate because their portions are larger than the other fantsy-pants places we've been.

We stayed here on vacation. I was impressed. Great food, great wine list, even a cheese course. The pecan pie desert is dry, the crust is too thick. I had read this in a review and still ordered it, which was a mistake. It still was a wonderful meal and a great time.

This restaurant never disappoints. All our meals were expertly prepared. Our table choices were varied . I had the Halibut. Others had chicken and duck. Importantly, the wine list had a large variety of medium priced wines. This is unusual in a high end restaurant. As is our practice, my wife and I shared a desert. Our pecan pie was dry and chewy and we left 1/2 of it on the plate. Except for desert, the place was great. We have been there before and will certainly return in the future

This is an amazing restaurant. The food is extraordinary. Everything is locally sourced. Each vegetable is unique in its flavor. The food is extremely creative. The chef gets better with each passing year. The wine is amazing. But what I like the most, is the people who staff the restaurant. They are warm, profession, anticipate your every need. After two visits, I feel like family. Paul's knowledge of wine is amazing. All this and a beautiful view of the ocean, humming birds flying above, and the warm evening breeze blowing off the pacific. I travel all over the world and go to many very fancy restaurants, the food and service here tops any other place I have been to. This is an exceptional experience.

We took our 2 and 5 yr old boys out for our last night of our spring break vacation. We sat outside to an impressive view of the Torrey Pines golf course and the ocean. The staff were thoughtful, kind and very patient. Not to mention extremely competent. Wine list was impressive (I'm a big Cab guy) and their staff had excellent recommendations. Quite simply. The. Best. Duck. Ever. Perfected dishes for both taste and texture. Dessert was crazy good (who knew you could significantly improve pecan pie!) and varied. A must for anyone who makes food a priority in their lives!

AR Valentien is a hidden gem nestled among the beauty of Torrey Pines. It has all the natural elements to "getaway" and the meal prep, presentation and taste is superb. No other restaurant in San Diego county can be compared to AR Valentien. It is a place that feeds the soul visually and gastronomically. A dining experience surround by architectural beauty, art and a sense of "european" class that is unique and welcomed difference.

This was my fifth time at AR V and probably enjoyed it the most since it was the first non-business dinner. My wife and I hosted her sister and husband who live in the area. The menu is very well thought out and works well with the wine list that is fairly priced. This is a superb restaurant for any occasion but always delivers first class cuisine in a very comfortable setting.

We stayed at The Lodge for our wedding annivesary so this was a natural fit for dinner. We had a nice cozy booth and our waiter was friendly and attentive. Ther service throughout was very good. Our starters ( Cauliflower soup w/Chorizo & Caeser Salad) were terrific. We also enjoyed the tasty little amuse bouche of hamachi. But our entrees were just "OK." My husband's fish was fishy. I ordered the pork loin which was served with delicious greens and also a tasty wedge of pork belly. But the loin itself was not very remarkable.

We went to AR Valentien for breakfast and the food was wonderful as was the ambiance. The breakfast was terrific that we went back again the same day for dinner. Dinner was disappointing - the service and food. We told our waitress we were on a gluten free diet but we weren't offered any gluten free options. We overheard at the table in front of us from another waiter that the chef could make them gluten free muffins and other offerings. When we asked the waitress about this she told us it was available but that it would take 15-20 minutes to order the muffins and that our food was going to be served now. Although we were given the muffins on the way out, the dinner wasn't that good and the service was lacking. I woudn't go back for dinner.
