A word from AR Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines
In our signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, Chef Jeff Jackson showcases, fresh market driven seafood, meats, produce and dairy products.
The menu is determined and influenced by what is available at any given time during the various seasons. Certain farms have been commissioned to produce items specific to the Lodge. Local small fish and seafood companies who deal in regional Southern California and Baja "catches" are utilized, as well as other west coast purveyors.
Out of respect for the quality of the foodstuffs available, the cooking is somewhat restrained in order to take advantage of the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients.
Because of this more "hands off" approach and the use of simple seasonings, various olive oils, and intense broths and juices as flavoring mediums, the dishes retain their nutritional integrity as well.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is a must see for fans of Greene and Greene and bungalow architecture. The restaurant shares the amazing detail seen in the lobby. We were there for lunch and the menu was interesting and ambitious. The ambiance and service were top notch. I had a lobster starter and my wife had an apple soup. The lobster was presented on a bed of shredded cabbage and the dish was quite good, although there was no more than a few bites of lobster. The apple soup was a bit muddled regarding taste, but the presentation was very nice. I had the skirt steak entree and my wife had the "brick" chicken. My steak was perfectly cooked but could have benefited from a more substantial side dish. The chicken had a nice sear and was flavorful, but was a bit dry. My overall feeling was that the chef was more focused on the unusual ingredients and the presentation than on the actual taste of the food. I would still recommend the restaurant. The setting is beautiful and the chef is working hard to use unusual and local ingredients.

For such a brief time in SanDiego, we hit the jack pot! Our waitstaff- very attentive Waitress- most accommodating Menu -choices were varied and most tempting Lunch-exceeded expectations We ordered the parsnip soup with Brussell sprouts to begin and asked for the recipe. Not only did we get a printed copy, the chef came to the table

My wife and I shared a soup (pureed squash, apple, peppers, cilantro) and two main dishes (scallops and black cod). All were beautifully presented and artfully prepared with top and unusual combinations of ingredients. Dessert was a trifle of chocolates in various forms. Such food and setting (Lodge at Torrey Pines) means a meal is an event. A few things were just average: breads, glazed carrots, coffee.

If you have the money to spend on a special occasion or are just well to do, this is the spot. The food is amazing, every dish has tons of flavor. The wait staff and managers treat you like a celebrity. The ambiance is top shelf, you feel like you are in a Sportsman Lodge is the Northwest or Midwest. While the portions are not large, every bite is an explosion of taste. I am not a foodie and the smaller portions did not bother me. Enjoy!!!

We tried the tasting menu and it was wonderful. It featured veal, lobster, a fall salad, and a tasty sampler dessert with an apple theme. The portions were good sized and the pacing was good. We also ordered a duck and pistachio pate which was house-made and memorable! We will be back and have already recommended it to friends.

We went for dinner. The menu was a standard fare. A steak offering, chicken, duck, scallops and a fish choice. Nice and relaxed setting and the food was very good but if your looking for exotic choices you should look elsewhere. The memorable part was the desert. We opted for the chocolate special and we were not disappointed. It met the standard of being unique and extra tasty. The wait staff was exceptional and we felt pampered.

We met our best friends for dinner just before sunset. Our table gave us a great view of the gold course, the ocean and the sunset. We started with a cheese plate and it was very good. When we left, we walked through the inside dining room, it was louder than we would have enjoyed. Beautiful furnishings and some seating with unique oval tables with curved bench seating. Worth the trip.

My husband and I felt there was way too much butter and salt in the meal. For a restaurant that prides itself in farm to table, the fat and salt that gets added kind of nixes out the healthy food. The service and decor were top notch and the food choices and presentation were great, minus our comments.

Overall a very nice experience. On this night, they were way too busy for the staff, resujlting in less than stellar service. Waitress was very service-oriented, just way too over worked to provide the level of service one should expect and get from this upscale restaurant. It was clearly a management problem, not a server problem.

My friends and I had a wonderful Sunday lunch at AR Valentien. As expected, the menu was sensational which made ordering a challenge. Our food was excellent from start to finish. Having been to this restaurant many times and considering it one of the very best in San Diego, I was disappointed in the service. The waiter had a cocky attitude. Clearing plates while one of my guests was still enjoying her lunch was unpleasant and intrusive. Usually the service is world class, but not this time.

AR Valentien offers fantastic food in a romantic and scenic setting. The Craftsmen design of the The Lodge and the restaurant make it feel warm and intimate. Menu choices may be very traditional (steak, seafood, pork, chicken, duck), but our orders were delicious (scallops and salmon). The staff is attentive without being intrusive and the view from our table was gorgeous. Great spot for any special occasion.

Our second time here in recent months. AR Valentien is a very special place and the service is excellent. The food on this visit was good - but not exceptional. The fruit in the stone fruit salad wasn't very ripe, the pork was rather bland, the vegetable in the vegetarian plate were not very exciting (carrots and a corn succotash-like preparation excellent; quinoa bland and unseasoned). The wine list (all US wines) is quite creative and reasonably priced. Of note, the restaurant will prepare a vegetarian platter if requested - this was excellent on our last visit.

Food was excellent - we both had the tasting menu with accompanying wines - four courses but small portions so that we didn't feel overwhelmed. Next time we'd probably skip the wines and just have a glass of wine - but it was interesting to taste new and delicious wines. Expensive but absolutely worth it. Especially loved the lamb meatball appetizer, crab tortellini in some kind of butter/saffron sauce and veal tenderloin entree.

We loved the three pate appetizer! It was large enough to be my entrée! The duck two-ways was great, so juicy and tasty. The scallop entrée was enough to feed two people, however my 15-year-old son ate the entrée dish himself. The scallops were perfectly cooked, not rubbery at all. My daughter felt adventurous and tried the Grouper which she loved. Since we were stuffed, we only ordered one dessert and the trifle was the winner! The chocolate and salted caramel combo was fantastic. We were pleasantly surprised with the complimentary dessert platter. My husband loved the mini-cupcakes! We brought our own wine, which our server decanted. Service was fantastic.

We had a very good meal here. I recommend the squash blossom starter: very tasty, with just the right amount of lemon-ricotta stuffing. Our entrees were the pork loin and the halibut. The pork was delicious, though unexpectedly medium-rare, which can be an issue for some people (including me). My husband enjoyed the halibut very much, but I found it to be both slightly overcooked and far too heavy on the fennel/licorice dimension. Service was spot-on.
