Diner Reviews
  • "Awesome night and fabulous food! Very enjoyable with terrific service. We really had a nice night"

  • "Have loved the food here for both brunch and dinner for years. Only complaint is that the space is small so the tables are tight. Last table has a picture hanging near it with a frame that's too large and hangs in your sightline. Fortunately, patrons are usually reasonably quiet and adults. Good for friends or a date. Mussels, salmon, duck, creme brûlée are all outstanding. Love that the servings aren't too small or too large. Just right for sharing-or not, and the prices are reasonable. Wine list not extensive, but serviceable. Service was friendly and competent. Just an all-around nice evening out."

  • "Great spot for before or after the theater. However they couldn't manage the pre-theater rush. We had to leave without finishing our meal. And my food was barely room temperature when it finally arrived."

  • "Aquitaine is an adorable, affordable French bistro in Lincoln Park, with exquisite food and friendly, personal service. Tucked in among the plethora of college sports bars, it's a wonderful alternative for those seeking delicious food in a serene environment."

  • "Loved this little Frenchish restaurant. Kind of hidden away so you have to know it is there. We enjoyed it."

  • "Our second time at Aquitaine, and both before attending a nearby theater. Crowded with other pre-theater diners, so the few servers and the kitchen were pressed, time got tight, and we had to skip dessert. Still, the meal itself was excellent bistro fare, well-proportioned and finished simply and tastefully."

  • "Wonderful salmon and my friend enjoyed the duck breast. Seating is too close for me, so I find myself concentrating on not listening to others or talking about anything too personal with my seatmate. No booths, however, the food is great and worth dining there from time to time."

  • "Charming, intimate and cozy restaurant. Food and presentation is superb. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great location for Greenhouse theatergoers - just a few steps away. Highly recommend."

  • "This was our first time that this lovely restaurant. It has a refined atmosphere ruined by the noise level due to no sound absorbing surfaces. The food may take a bit long to get to you but it is well worth the wait as it is beautifully prepared and presented. I had trout, cooked perfectly and my friend a steak, also cooked to perfection. Vegetable sides were not overcooked and very tasty. Mashed potatoes smooth and creamy. I started with cream of cauliflower soup, a very smooth delicious velvety soup. We were going to the theater and had no time to try desserts. We are sure to return but must still say the noise level was much too high."

  • "Totally empty. Concerning but inside, immediately confronted unpleasant odor. Near a front window where the smell was not too strong....another couple would come in later and request to be moved as the smell must have been worse in the back. That needs to be fixed asap! Server was fairly attentive and friendly, my cocktail was strong and food okay but over-priced. Salads were fresh but swam in dressings. I had the duck and it was overcooked (barely a hint of pink, which is no way to treat duck breast) and over-sauced. My companion had trout that was nicely cooked, but again, over -sauced. With the one drink and no dessert, dinner with tip $100.00...with all restaurants to choose from in Lincoln Park, sadly, this place should be skipped."

  • "French cuisine has obviously a lot to offer but it is somewhat difficult to find authentic classic French restaurants in Chicago (I mean reflecting the day to day French cuisine). Aquitaine is not an exception to that statement even if almost all the starers "sound" French : USD 5 Onion Soup (I can tell you that it is not easy to find onion soup in France, unless you are in Paris' more touristic area), overcooked (then extra-small) pan seared foie gras (USD 15), etc. The plats principaux (entrees) have nothing to do with French classics but are good (braised ribs, pasta with seafood, etc... Italy has been part of France under Napoleon I, hence the confusion ;-). The wine list is small but serious ... but once again not even 20% is French.."

  • "Food is quite good. I recommend the cheese board appetizer. Very good!!! It does not seem that bread comes with your dinner though. I found that hard to believe for a french restaurant. We ordered a loaf and were charged for the baquette. It was good though."

  • "This is a hidden gem in Lincoln Park. Small portions for the price."

  • "I've been here twice and it's been fantastic both times. The food is amazing. Some of the best creme brulee you'll ever have in your life."

  • "From our delightful waiter Caitlin to the good craft cocktails to the melt-in-your-mouth short ribs and deeply tasty trout, this was a satisfying experience from beginning to end. Bravo to all in the tiny kitchen!"

  • "The most notable thing about our dinner experience was the lamb special. Three perfectly prepared shanks served on lovely squash ravioli. Wonderful. The one disappointment was dessert. The flourless chocolate cake tasted like it had been frozen and incompletely thawed. But our salad, appetizer and main dishes were lovely and our server (Dante) was knowledgeable and amiable."

  • "Nice, small bistro type restaurant. Food was delicious. Had the salmon and the lamb chops. Butternut squash soup was yummy and the scallop app was fabulous. Would go back!"

  • "We used a Groupon for our meal and our party all felt the server was irritated by the fact we were using it. He swooped our menus away and handed us a card that was marked Groupon. If they don't like customers to use Groupons, they shouldn't participate. There were only 2 other tables occupied, so it's apparent they can use new customers. Unfortunately, with that attitude, non of us will be returning."

  • "with the greenhouse theatre in the same block, this is the one "upscale" restaurant worthy of your time. an enticing menu - well prepared, beautifully presented. for our last meal, we had a lovely prix fixe meal due to a groupon. we'll be back."

  • "The food is good, inventive offerings. Service only so-so. Hard to get a glass of water. And if you want bread, you have to buy it! (I understand having to ask for it, but to pay extra for a roll?)."

  • "Very quaint and nice atmosphere. The food was delicious and the staff was conscientious about having enough time to prepare and eat the meal as we were going to play."

  • "When we sat down, we informed the waiter that we would need to leave by 7 and asked if that posed a problem or if he suggested anything on the menu we should stay away from, as well as requesting our bill with the food delivery. We were assured we'd be fine if we ordered then and did. We waited 25 minutes between the soup/salad course and the delivery of the entrée at 7 with no check in or apology. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty at that point, the waiter never stopped by to see how our food was, refill water, etc. BAD SERVICE!!!"

  • "The food was very tasty, and the drinks were well made. The service was a bit slow, but because our group was very talkative, we hardly noticed. I will definitely go back."

  • "We went on a recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent I had the beet salad, as my wife, along with 2 appetizers, the gnocci (w/lobster) and the scallops, while my wife had the vegetable tart. All were very good."

  • "Small but creative menu. Very flavorful. Not a neighborhood we usually go to anymore - helps to have the free parking in the old Children's Hospital garage."

  • "charming french cafe , nice menu and wine selection and good value, convenient to local theatre"

  • "We went with the Groupon tasting menu and it was a fabulous sampling of delicious foods. We liked everything. The food was most assuredly French made rich with butter and cheeses and everything indulgent. Our server, Dante, was a champ. He really went along with my weird sense of humor and checked on us frequently. We were the only diners at Aquitaine that Tuesday evening but it still felt comfortable. The only thing that would have sent this experience over the moon is if we met Chef Holly. I have such respect for her and the work she's done with Aquitaine."

  • "Great place with lots of ambiance, excellent food and service. Only one slight defect .. Spinach was waaaay over-garliced! On the other hand Golden Beet ice cream was smooth and creamy and a refreshing dessert taste. Definitely a place to return to!"

  • "There are some issues here. But first, we loved the ambiance -- lovely, small, welcoming. Appealing food selection, and we loved all our choices -- mussels, kale salad, salmon. Our server (Dante) was attentive and helpful. However, there was a considerable delay getting our main dishes. Two neighboring tables had the same problem. As all of us were going to theatre (as do many of the diners, it appears), this became really problematic. Seems to be a problem with the kitchen. My three stars for Service reflect a balance between the server (quite good) and the kitchen (unacceptable). Lovely place, and we would hate to see it go. But there won't be a lot of repeat customers this way."

  • "What a gem! Small, unassuming, quiet, very well-appointed--and terrific cuisine, creatively prepared and presented. Nothing fancy, just an attractive bistro where everything went smoothly and professionally. Definitely worth repeat visits."

  • "OMG this place was amazing! The food was WONDERFUL!!!!!! The food was fresh, VERY well prepared, the presentation was EXCELLENT, served at the perfect temperature! The ambiance was great, our server was FANTASTIC! All this from a "self proclaimed Foodie"" We used a Groupon, and are recommending it to everyone who asks, even some who haven't ;) We can't stop RAVING about it"
