Diner Reviews
  • "This is one of the great restaurants of Chestnut Hill with its charming French menu and attentive service. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a wonderful night out."

  • "Nothing stood out of our three meals. The wait staff was too busy to handle the number of people in the restaurant and service was slow. Water was never refilled, the food was luke warm, the hollandaise was too thick, the hash brown potatoes were soft and unappealing. The bloody mary was loaded with tabasco. We will not come again. The booth was uncomfortable even for 3 people. Just too small with two people (and we are not large) on one side."

  • "This restaurant is a favorite of ours. It has the flavor of a true French bistro where you may be seated very close to your neighbors, but you feel that an intimate space is created around you. The food is delicious, and the portions are just right. The kitchen is very accommodating and creative. My husband is vegan, and we always are able to arrange a flavorful complete meal for him from the sides and salads on the menu. The wine list is small, but the selections are careful and interesting."

  • "We took friends out to Aquitane Bis to celebrate a special occasion. The restaurant did not disappoint. The fries with truffle aioli were magnificent (we shared them as an appetizer). Everyone had a different salad and we each thought ours was wonderful. I had the entree special- lamb chops in a pistachio-fig crust. Tender and DELICIOUS! I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food here is good, as well as the bar. But, the service is only friendly if you are a recognized regular. We come here maybe once every other month, so this is a trend we have notice: we must wait for blase service while others are greeted by name with considerable warmth and given a much higher standard of service. If suppose this is fine for some, but I think this may be my last visit -- I do not care to be treated like a second class citizen when I can get food that is just as good and warmer service at other establishments."

  • "this was a second visit, and first was good, so i was reluctant to post this. but, i feel that my meal failed both from the standpoint of description and execution. avoid the so-called sole meuniere. it has no resemblance to the classic french dish, instead being a small piece of over-cooked fried flat fish of some kind. i would have disappointed with it had it come out of a food truck as part of an advertised fish and chips. in defense of the overall professionalism of the group, had i returned the dish i am sure i would have had the situation cleaned up immediately. unfortunately, in a group that is not always possible, and still the issue of the menu just being wildly off base would still be there. other diners at my table were happy."

  • "We went to Aquitaine for the first time and loved it. It's decor is French bistro and everything was perfect--excellent food and excellent staff. We had drinks instead of wine. It was just a quick weeknight dinner, but I've been telling friends it was lovely and we'll certainly be back."

  • "We've always liked our meals here and choose from the specials and regular menu. This last visit,t two of us had the sea bass special, one had the prime ribs and the 4th had the schnitzel. We all liked our meal. The menu hasn't changed much, I think, over the years, but there appears to be something for everyone. The service staff was fine on this busy Saturday night, prompt and nice. We had requested a quiet spot for catching up and the request was honored. It was a full house. We appreciate having the bar available for friends who get there early. With all the newer places in the area, we still think Bis is a gem. Thanks."

  • "If not sure how to impress your date this is a perfect place. Everything is great here, yet not so great that the meal or the place will takeover the night. The lamb was almost perfect and presentation was nice. One place where two items on the menu that are always reliable: steak and duck. We went with the duck and, again, almost perfect! Their classic onion soup was excellent and tuna tartar was very fresh. We had profiteroles for desert and they were basically ice cream, but the "shell" was the tastiest part. The place has a good wine list, we just ordered cocktails - very good. To sum it all up, there are better French restaurants in Boston but this is my favorite French bistro."

  • "The food was delicious. We both had the lamb shank and it was amazing. I do think they use a lot of salt but most restaurants do. Very nice sangria. The service was good but not as good as you would expect here. Wasn't a match for the level of food quality. The waitress didn't announce the specials. Her attitude and manners were just a bit too casual."

  • "We were disappointed with the portions and for a Frennch restaurant they weren't very tasty. No one looked happy to be working there!"

  • "It was restaurant week and they had a menu for this. My mom and boyfriend ordered the bone marrow as the first dish from the restaurant week menu but when the appetizer came, there was no marrow (only bone). My farro and gnochi were good but I was not a fan of the creme brule. Our experience was average and prices did not match the food quality. A little overpriced and not too great."

  • "The food is always consistent, good variety. We had a table in the back, not noisy at all. Friendly waitress."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Too expensive, too far, too hard to get to just to eat something that was not tasty nor was it romantic. There was a man speaking loudly to the waiter about his car and assets and the table next to us was talking about how much they hated their lives quite loudly as well. It really ruined our appetite."

  • "We wanted to try it and Dine Out Boston week seemed like a good time. The food was wonderful. Service was great. There are a bunch of items on the regular menu I want to try. We spoke to the chef and he was forthcoming and a delight."

  • "We went to Aquitaine Bis to spend time with friends in a March restaurant week. Prices were great--28 dollars for three courses that were terrific. Some restaurants have gone the way of offering some pretty bland and uninteresting choices for restaurant week, but the selections were interesting, eg, farro salad with pepper encrusted goat cheese, poached fish with lobster sauce, etc. The atmosphere is warm and vibrant. Service was excellent....everything when you needed it but no interruption of the flow of conversation when you did not. We'll be back when it's no longer restaurant week."

  • "My wife and I drove in from Westboro to one of our favorite restaurants for the current Boston Restaurant Week dinner. (You may still have a chance as it continues through Mar. 28 skipping Saturday). Uncharacteristically, our meals turned out to be a bit spotty. For appetizers we tried the watercress soup which was excellent, however, the marrow croustade was somewhat less choice. For entrees, the wolf fish was rather good although it turned out to be catfish. (They told us in advance so we weren't surprised.) The Berkshire Pork Cassoulet was outstanding. For desert, the Crème Brulee was excellent as usual, but the Pain Perdu au Chocolat needed a bit more chocolate to satisfy a chocolate lover like me."

  • "I have eaten here many times but stopped coming about 2 years ago. Somehow just didn't enjoyed the boring taste. This time I came for Boston Dining Out, but ended up getting the Monday special. OMG how delicious and flavorful was the short rib / gnocchi /vegetable. Enjoyed it immensely. Looking forward to return. Thanks for a great meal."

  • "The chocolate French toast was excellent. And, my friend seemed to enjoy her French toast as well. There were a lot of children in the restaurant--so I gave less of a score for ambience. And, we had an open table gift certificate and got some trouble from the waitress about getting our change back (we wanted to get the change and then leave a bigger tip) --it seemed like she wanted to ensure that she was getting a tip."

  • "Everything was excellent - the food, the setting and the service. We went for a special occassion and it was wonderful. The food was excellent: tuna tartar, salad, duck and steak for main course and creme brulee for the desert. The steak was medium well rather than medium and as soon as we mentioned it, they took it back and prepared a new one with most accomodation. All staff and manager stopped by and ensured we are satisfied. We were very impressed."

  • "I ordered the mussels and the chicken. I think there were only 9 musssels in the appetizer. The chicken entree looked like an appetizer. Chicken was fatty and dry at the same time. Very disappointing for a $90 meal. Maybe the burbs are used to this but I am not. I like the South End Aquitaine but this one is WAY mediocre."

  • "Many trips to Aquitaine never disappoint. A convenient place to meet friends for lunch."

  • "Food was uneven. One special very good, other just okay. Duck confit ravioli was too heavily sauced. Salads were too peppery."

  • "We had lost touch with this neighborhood favorite over the last few years. We had had a couple of forgettable meals and just never went back. We decided to revisit for brunch this week and it was the best! The food was outstanding, the server was great, the space was still lovely - the whole meal was as good or better than it ever was. We will be going back for dinner next week."

  • "Delicious French bistro cuisine right in a neighborhood setting with easy access and free parking. The quality of our selections was excellent and well prepared. My only complaint about the evening is the noise level. My husband is hearing impaired. What is euphemistically called "energetic" is almost impossible for him."

  • "Went there for brunch. Atmosphere was nice and menu was promising. Took more than 30mins to get our food though. Food was okay but not worth the wait. Potentially could have been great."

  • "We were looking to dine at the South End Aquitaine for Valentine (were we have been many times and enjoy it) but it was all booked way in advance for that evening. I Was not aware the there was a sister restaurant in Chesnutt Hill where we managed to get probably the last reservation available and we were not disappointed. Similar great atmosphere as the Boston venue and the food was up to par. Have an excellent time."

  • "You can never go wrong here. Food and service are always excellent - the Sunday brunch is a great deal (even with the price increase from 9.99 to 11.95)"

  • "I've been to this restaurant numerous times for brunch, lunch, and dinner. My most recent visit was for brunch. I had an omelette, which came with home fries and toast. There was no seasoning whatsoever on the omelette. Pepper was not provided on table. Butter was hard and unspreadable. Honestly, I could have made a better meal at home, except perhaps for the fries, which aren't something I'd usually cook."

  • "What a wonderful evening! Food and service outstanding!!! Great drink and wine list. And fabulous desserts. Perfect service; quiet attention without ever making us feel rushed. Can't wait to go back! I believe Lindsay was our server (from Wisconsin?). Fantastic!!!"

  • "We had a great meal and were pleasantly surprised. The menu was classic items done very well. Everything we had was delicious, down to the bread and butter. The simple mache salad tasted just like the ones I got when vacationing in Paris. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful and the atmosphere was warm and pleasant. It was lively and energetic without being too loud to have good conversation. Overall, a great night and we will definitely return!"

  • "Aquitaine in Chestnut Hill - the food was delicious and well presented, the bottle of red wine (Bordeaux) was excellent. The ambiance was lively and just a tad too noisy. But it had a nice energy to it. I would recommend this Bistro for a treat as the food is great, nice atmosphere and price is good for the value."
