Diner Reviews
  • "This is the third time here. It never disappoints. The food, service and ambiance are just what a bistro in the village should be. Will be back again."

  • "Have been here many times and have always had a wonderful time!! Food and service is excellent. Went with another couple they loved the food too. Only negative is food is a little pricey but well worth the cost. Nice bonus is in nice weather they have a great courtyard in the back."

  • "I have been there several times and continue to think of AOC as a terrific gem of a place! The food is excellent, as is the service; Delightful French food at very reasonable prices. The staff is gracious & welcoming, & not at all stuffy. They have advertised Groupons, and, unlike some other restaurants, welcomed their use. Much to my surprise, on my last visit it learned that in addition to the quaint little restaurant you see through the windows, there is a back room hidden behind the bar! Restaurants may come & go but AOC is one place I really hope will remain."

  • "My husband and I had just got into NYC late Saturday with no reservations for dinner. We ended up near Bleecker St. and found AOC on Ope Table. Great food and fun atmosphere. Both of us had Italian dishes. It appeared that all patrons around us were having a great time, including us."

  • "We were looking forward to this French Bistro in the West Village. Unfortunately the food was not very good. Poulet was dried out. Prep was sloppy. However, the service was good, and the restaurant had two no corkage nights a week! If only the food was better, it would be quite a find."

  • "I used to go to this restaurant over a decade ago as my go-to Village restaurant - formerly known as The Grove. We went here because we wanted mussels and despite so-so yelp recommendations, we wanted to give it a try. Loved it! The cauliflower gratin was delicious and others loved the truffle mac and cheese. I had no trouble finding gluten free options and my friends had interesting vegetarian options too. Will be back!"

  • "It was an off night for the restaurant. We've been there before and it has always been a great experience, but not our most recent visit. The service was slow. After our appetizers were served is was a full half hour before the main course arrived. Even more annoying was that people who had come in long after we did were served before us. Two of the main courses were sent back because they were overcooked, even though we had specified rare. The wait staff was friendly enough and were quick to redo the dinners. We will go back again, chalking it up to an off night."

  • "It was a great meal, so easy, no fuss with seating or anything (we had a reservation, but most tables were empty at 7pm on a Friday night). The service was good, attentive and nice. The food was good, I had the duck which was 3/4 good, but a bit dry. My husband's mushroom risotto was really well liked. Overall it was good!"

  • "The menu at this restaurant was the initial draw but the ambiance and service took it to an even higher level. Something for everyone to eat. Large wine menu with every French wine imaginable. They were very understanding and accommodating in terms of changing the time and number in party."

  • "The wait staff was exceptional and the food very good"

  • "Extremely noisy place. Food extremely disappointing; medicore at best. Waiter constantly pressing to order and rush you through dinner. Felt like he wanted to turn the table in 30-45 minutes. Ready to grab plates and wine glass before we were finished. Felt extremely rushed. Perhaps the room overlooking the outdoor are may have been more quiet. Should get more at these prices."

  • "Onionsoup had great cheese topping, but soup below it was uninspiring. Go for the charcuterie as a starter. Pork chop was perfect. Duck is also a winner."

  • "Had brunch here recently. The food was perfect. All three plates at our table were exquisite, and we're only talking omelettes and the basics. Also, the hot chocolate is fun - comes in a bowl :0) def going back"

  • "The waiters on both occasions brought the following course without removing the plates from the previous course first. They seemed to have absolutely no idea what I was talking about when I asked them to please clear the table first before putting down the dishes with the next courses' food. When I complained about it to whom seemed like the head waiter he just made up mumbo jumbo excuses and did not apologize. No one came to check if we ever needed anything and getting someone's attention was like pulling teeth. Will never go back."

  • "We weren't too sure what to expect but, wow, did we have an outstanding dining experience! The food was just delicious and the wait staff was extremely accommodating. To say the noise level was energetic might be a slight understatement. But the ambiance of AOC was exhilarating! If you like good food and enjoy an energetic environment, AOC is a must."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner here. The place was cute and inviting. We were happy with the food and service. Coq au Vin was a little bit saltier than I would've liked, but still delicious. I'm not sure if it's a place we would go back for sure, but we were glad we tried the place."

  • "This has always been one of my neighborhood gems in the West Village. It's the cutest rustic french bistro, and I've always liked the food too. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things, but all three of our meals were underwhelming and just not as gourmet and fresh as they couldve been. It was lunch so I ordered the smoked salmon platter - the salmon was mushy, as if they had just dethawed it from the freezer. Will probably give it another try though due to atmosphere."

  • "This was my second visit to New York City. Traveling with me were my husband and daughter. We all love French cuisine. Our waiter was so friendly and the service was top notch. My meal was wonderful and the French Onion Soup fabulous, best I've ever had."

  • "My fish was served over some pretty mushy risotto. Otherwise it was great. The staff was very attentive and the presentation of the food and the specials was all well done. Great location in the Village and reasonable prices. Go you won't regret it."

  • "I'm from out of town and went for a pre-show dinner. The food was great as was the service. We had a 5:30 reservation and ate inside. It wasn't too crowded yet and we had a lovely dinner experience and then walked just a couple blocks to the theater. Very nice."

  • "Saw a French movie at IFC, and wanted to continue the mood by having French food. Food was excellent, as was the wine and the service. Price, while certainly not cheap, was reasonable. When in the neighborhood - will return."

  • "The rating would have been higher had the server been more attentive and the french fries not from the bottom of the bag but overall the food choices and ambiance make this the perfect little neighborhood spot. I had the mussels and fries and both seemed endless. The bread was irresistible, so overall it was not a low cal lunch but there were plenty of other options I could have opted for. Give it a try."

  • "Pleasant ambience, and not too noisy. There is a TV over the bar showing sports, which is distracting and unnecessary in a nice restaurant. The prices were reasonable, given the area. The wine list has something for everyone -- from a reasonable Côte du Rhone to some quite select wines. I began with soup - delicious. The main course -- a wild mushroom risotto with a balsamic glaze and sautéd seafood -- was OK, not more. The balsamic hid the mushroom flavor entirely. The risotto was gummy (which, I grant, is not unusual in restaurants). My dining companions seemed happy with their dinners. The house policy is to automatically add a 20% gratuity to the bill for groups of six or more, a practice that I find to be very presumptuous."

  • "We went there for our anniversary dinner on Saturday night. The escargot was nothing special. The calamari was okay. The entrees - seafood and lamb chops were done well. But there was a long wait between appetizer and entree."

  • "Had not been to AOC in a while but had good memories. Food was spectacular - better than I remembered. We shared a macaroni and cheese with truffles and a salad for the appetizer and both were delicious. The salad had a goat cheese filled pastry that was warm and delicious. I had steak frites with peppercorn sauce perfectly cooked nice cut and amazing frites too. She had fish also perfectly prepared with tasty veggies. A nice cotes du rhone went well with everything. Portions were correct - not excessive and we were totally satisfied. Will visit again more regularly :-)"

  • "If you're looking for really well prepared french food - this is the place to go. The menu is pretty classic but I was impressed with the execution - especially for the price."

  • "Chose AOC to be close to Barrow Street theater. loved sitting on patio but service was slow and mussels were small and lacked succulence. The sauce was tasteless, bread was also tasteless and cold. Disappointing. Will not return"

  • "We have had both lunch and dinner in this restaurant a number of times in the last 3 years. It has been patchy in the past but always OK. My 'organic' chicken was dry and tasteless, however the mushroom risotto for my wife was a congealed mess. The biggest sin committed was when her dish went back with only the surface touched, that no one asked why?"
