Diner Reviews
  • "I took a work colleague to lunch to celebrate a promotion and we had an uneven experience. The setting is modern and inviting, but the food was average for a restaurant with the $$$ prices and adventuresome sounding preparations. We weren't told that the four part 'express' lunch would served Bento style and the long wait following my ala carte salad was disconcerting. Our young waiter was earnest and friendly, but not well trained. Heirloom tomato salad was more hot house and the 'fusion' chicken dish was a bit dry and the vegetables were lower grade and bland. On the positive side the dining room was nicely lit and allowed for comfortable conversation. All in, mostly show, no go."

  • "We usually return to this wonderful Asian fusion restaurant whenever we get back to San Francisco. The food is very well prepared and interesting. The special sushi rolls are excellent as were the main courses. The restaurant decor is pleasant, but beware of the banquet seats if you have back pain. The seats are very long and provides little back support. Extra pillows would have been nice."

  • "Try this creative dish. However small selection of Japanese food."

  • "Perfect for conversation and great food. The wine was superb as well as the service, and wonderful sushi."

  • "Their buffet breakfast was very nice and our Japanese guests really liked all the Japanese items which were tasty and well presented. Myself, I had the American breakfast and was very pleased also. Unobtrusive and pleasant service."

  • "Great decor, great food, great service, perfect fusion"

  • "We arrive at Anzu at little early, but was seated right-away. We started out with a nice summer drink, a cucumber martini, and a glass of Hahn Pinot Noir wine. The Dragon Rolls were delicious and filling. The chilled tomato bisque was simply delicious. I had the New York Steak and my companion had the Shiso Tenderloin Fillet, cooked to perfection. The dessert we had "The Fog", which was on a plate sitting inside another bowl, in which the wait staff pour a liquid and you get the effect of fog coming over the Golden Gate Bridge. This was very intriguing. The mood was just right, not too dark that you could not see the menu or the check. The wait staff was very attentive and accommodating."

  • "We needed a spot with good ambiance, quiet so we could have a conversation and wanted good food. The meal exceeded our expectations and the small dining venue was perfect for our business needs."

  • "Great service, good food! Lots of fun! I recommend this restaurant for people who have good taste!"

  • "Pretty good food and decent service yet the glass of Cab Sav from Chile I had was the highlight. Kind of motivated me to stop trying to eat good Japanese food in the US, although I guess I knew what I was getting into as soon as I found out the chef was French. Traits on the menu (such as the truffle-ginger dashi broth that tasted like basic shoyu-dashi broth-on the Misoyaki Black Cod, which tastes as good as $7 mom and pop restaurants in Tokyo) sound better than they are."

  • "Service was friendly, attentive, but unobtrusive. Forks, etc. were removed and replaced when needed without my even noticing. All food was carefully thought out and presented, but what we really enjoyed was the ability to have conversation without shouting."

  • "This is a hidden lunch Gem that usually isn't too crowded but the food and service are really good. The only complaint was the salmon was somewhat fishy, more than it should have been denoting that it was not fresh that day. Otherwise, the food was really good and the service was top notch. A very nice place that is smaller and usually not overly crowded."

  • "My friend and I went to lunch. It is very pretty and the water features are so nice. The food was excellent. We got an appetizer and the express lunch which came very fast and was tasty along with tea. The waiter was very informative and attentive. I also went here for Mother's day with a buffet and a bottomless Mimosas. The beef was so tasty, the choices were numerous. The crowd was well mannered and the food selections were numerous. The omlet was the composed of the ingredients that I choose, It was wonderful. Great food and the Mimosas kept coming. I have also been there for dinner, the Japanese chef is excellent. One of the guests took Japanese in college, we were very pleased with what he ordered."

  • "I found Anzu on Open Table and was excited for our special lunch in the city. (We had been in wine country for 4 days.). Anzu staff were lovely but the vibe was stuffy and formal, little atmosphere at all. My chicken sandwich was rubber chicken with a soft white kaiser bun! Anzu had a hotel restaurant feel; adequate in a pinch, before you find the cool places to go!"

  • "We went to Anzu before theatre at the Curran. Good service, food was great and noise level was such that we could actually carry on an intelligent conversation."

  • "Our favorite places were full. Anzu was available. While the service was excellent, the food and the value were disappointing. We chose the 4 course meals. the crudo was minute; the French Onion soup was so salty that we had to add water, and thus cold; the duck was not completely cooked; and the desert was too sweet. If not for the service, we would have rated it one star."

  • "This quaint Asian fusion restaurant located inside Hotel Nicco was a great fine for lunch. Their menu was small but adequate, and their food was delectable, beautifully arranged and plated, and very tasty. The bacon in the Cobb salad was the best we had ever tasted, and the chicken, sushi rolls, and dessert had excellent flavor. We were there when it wasn't too busy so it was very quiet and was great to hold a conversation. I don't know if it stays quiet when it fills up. The service was also wonderful, and they were very attentive and friendly. I would definitely recommend going here if you have a chance."

  • "Ate at the sushi bar before attending a show at the Feinstein's showroom. Good quality sushi roll although expensive (it is San Francisco, so high prices are not a surprise). Service was highly attentive. They were able to accommodate me for a later time and still finish service before the show, as heavy traffic prevented arrival at my scheduled reservation time."

  • "The Hamachi Nigiri was great, but my steak was undercooked (and sent back), and the other food (sushi rolls) was average. Our server was very attentive and thoughtful when *around*, but was fairly scarce and did not check up on us within a reasonable time after we were given our food. Service was slow: our main courses took an hour to get to us which is ridiculous, and their menu was overpriced. Another server who approached me when I couldn't find our waiter, was aloof and spoke with a tone of indifferent annoyance when asking what I needed (white female, top knot'd hair). So overall, we loved the "look and feel" of Anzu, but everything else was disappointing. With all of the choices in the SF, we are sad to say we wouldn't return here."

  • "While the food was good it was not GREAT, as previous reviewers had led us to believe. Service wasn't bad but could have been better. The restaurant wasn't crowded pre theater yet we had to constantly try to get our server's attention. Priced a bit on the high end for what it was but then, again, it's in the Hotel Nikko."

  • "We went for a birthday/Father's Day celebration. Filer Mignon was excellent if overpriced at $37. Black cod was just OK, nothing special. Dragon roll was of the quality available in any sushi restaurant at much cheaper price than $17. Hamachi was just 4 pieces with a fancy sauce for $18. Wine was outrageously overpriced with Napa Valley Chardonnay at $63 a bottle. The ambiance was very nice, even if the restaurant seemed a bit underpopulated. The service was excellent. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. Overall we had a nice time, except for when we saw the bill. Don't think I would go again though."

  • "Very unusual for hotel. But the food was amazing perfectly prepared with great service. One of the best meals I've had in San Fran!"

  • "It's a beautiful space and relaxing environment to enjoy your food. The salmon was perfectly cooked, crispy skin side and a little raw in the middle."

  • "Our group of 6 women shared 2 sushi rolls & edamame for starters. They were fantastic, fresh & flavorful. Two of us each ordered a roll for their entree, two others ordered cod & salmon and said it was sensational. The only disappointment was the sun dried tomato ravioli, bland flavor, mushy texture, not horrible but most definitely not on a par with the seafood. "

  • "I have visited Anzu in the past, but on a recent trip to San Francisco I visited Anzu and enjoyed it so much that I as I sat there at the end of my meal I cancelled my dinner reservation elsewhere for two nights later, rebooked (thank you OpenTable!) at Anzu, and requested the same table and server. On my return visit I had the "chef's choice" sushi, which was truly the most beautiful sushi presentation I have ever seen -- my compliments to the sushi chefs! My sushi was excellent, Andrea was again attentive and helpful but not intrusive, and manager Steve again made me feel welcome. Anzu isn't cheap, but if you want excellent sushi and great service, Anzu is the place to go!"

  • "I have visited Anzu a couple of times in the past, and was eager to return on this trip to San Francisco. I sat at a small 2-top table almost between the two parts of the dining room where I had a nice view of the sushi chefs at work. I chose a large selection of sushi, a glass of Silverado sauvignon blanc. Then I just settled back to read my book while my server Andrea did a wonderful job of taking care of me. Manager Steve stopped by to say hello, the sushi chefs gave me friendly smiles, and I felt right at home. I enjoyed my dinner so much that I as I sat there at the end of my meal I cancelled my dinner reservation elsewhere for two nights later, rebooked (thank you OpenTable!) at Anzu, and requested the same table and server. • "We very much enjoyed our dinner at Anzu before going to a show at Feinstein's at the Nikko. The meal was good and the service was terrific. The cocktails were innovative and tasty -- our favorite was the Sake Sangria."

  • "Anzu is our only choice when going to Feinstein's at the Nikko Hotel. Prompt, courteous service, great food and you get to check in and choose your seats before the show. On top of that you get 2 hours validated parking in the hotel's garage. It's a great deal!"

  • "Loved the black cod, but 1 notch too salty. The lettuce cups with pork and noodles were really disappointingly flat in taste. So we returned them and ordered something else. The tempura sushi roll was fantastic!"

  • "We dined at Anzu on a Friday night. We arrived at 7:30, just as the theater crowd was finishing up. The restaurant went from packed to almost empty in about 15 minutes. The food was sublime and so was the service. Andrea, our waitress, made excellent recommendations for food and wine. We shared three dishes (also at her recommendation) because the portions are substantial and it gave us a chance to sample more. The takeaway cupcake was a nice touch, too. We received followup email asking what could be improved, and couldn't think of anything."

  • "We were going to see Michael Feinstein, so eating at Anzu was perfect. The food is outstanding and everyone could not have been more attentive. I would go there regularly, if I lived in San Francisco. But, this is my third time at the restaurant and it has consistently been fabulous."
