Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was fantastic! We loved the service (Ryan) the food (The Rock was so much fun) we had appetizers and sushi before going downstairs for a show in the cabaret theatre in the hotel (Megan Hilty was amazing) The whole evening was magical! Thank You Anzu for making our 29th anniversary so special!!"

  • "Great food and perfect location especially if you are seeing a show at Feinsteins."

  • "We planned a lunch to have opportunity for conversation with a colleague. We wanted a quiet, beautiful place with very good food. Anzu met our expectations in all respects."

  • "The dinner at ANZO exceeded my expectations. The service was excellent, food was outstanding and ANZO made a special effort to make sure my father's 89th Birthday was memorable and a wonderful experience."

  • "We've bee looking for a place that provides Japanese traditional breakfast and I'm so glad we found here! Authentic yummy Japanese breakfast. I wish there were more varieties n food selections though..."

  • "took out of town relatives here who are sophisticated NYC eaters. They loved it, as did we. Delicious, creative combinations, beautiful presentation, a "breakfast cake" as a parting gift - this restaurant has it all. AND quiet enough to talk. high tail it here pre-theater!"

  • "Anzu is in a vibrant, elegant setting. Although the bar was a bit too loud as we walked through on our way to dinner, it looked like a stylish spot for an after work or pre-theatre drink. We sampled both the sushi and the small plates and found the snow mountain sushi rolls the best and the Beets Three Ways the least exciting. Anzu dinner gets you reserved seating at Feinstein's downstairs, a plus! (And some better dessert choices at Feinstein's would be great.)"

  • "I had not been to the Nikko before, but we bought tickets to the show and thought we'd eat right there in the hotel. Well, what a great find. We will go back just to eat at the restaurant."

  • "Although all the servers were very attentive, it took forever to have our dinners served. They were all appropriately shocked when we asked about it but it still took a lot time to be served. And when it did come, my husband's duck breast (which he had asked to be crispy and the waiter assured him the chef always did it that way), the skin was flaccid and unappealing. He sent it back and it took about another half hour to get it replaced. Meanwhile, my dinner went cold waiting. Too bad because the restaurant is visually appealing. And it's not cheap!"

  • "We ate here to get the premiere seating for a show downstairs at Feinsteins. The food was excellent, our waiter was a good blend of attentive but not overbearing. We had sushi, baked salmon, and salad - ate it all. And the topper was the complimentary cupcake for dessert. My wife had the house red but she didn't like it and went to a named brand on the menu. I would eat here again if going to the show, a nice dinner with my wife or meeting people from out of town."

  • "We enjoyed the convenience of dining before show downstairs. The seating positions for 2 seemed awkward; one person had full view of dining room activety, while other person facing windows with an obvious outside coating of dirt, causing sun glare. One of us didn't like the background music(I didn't mind). Food and service good. Would have enjoyed side of fresh greens or steamed veggies with high-end main dish."

  • "This is a restaurant for a special treat in a calm atmosphere which permits conversation. The decor is muted and sophisticated. Staff are well informed about the menu, are aware of one's dining pace but not intrusive. The sashimi was silky and sublime, but there are also "fusion" alternatives for those who do not want to be limited to Japanese food. A restaurant for knowledgeable adult diners."

  • "Excellent complement to a night at Feinstein's. Excellent Japanese fare with an American flair. Perfect as a pre-show dinner venue."

  • "Had a good time at Anzu this weekend. The restaurant is in the Hotel Nikko, so the entrance and first section really feel like a hotel restaurant, but the back is nice (feels more like a stand alone restaurant). Ryan, was our server, and he was extremely considerate and helpful. I had family with me that have never had sushi before, and he spent a good amount of time with them to pick out dishes they'd like (which they did). There are a few places in SF that probably have better sushi, but this place was really quite good. They also have some pretty fun starters, like 'The Rock'. I'd recommend. And, really appreciate the service Ryan provided."

  • "Very pleasant atmosphere with very fine service. Our dishes were salmon with risotto and duck breast, both beautifully prepared and cooked to perfection with excellent yet subtle use of appropriate spices. My wife and I enjoyed the low noise conversation enabling background levels (hard to find these days). Will definitely come back to try other dishes too."

  • "The food was delicious and wine list was amazing. We ate there before Paula West show and the service was excellent. The staff accommodated an early reservation and we were able to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner. Wonderful place!"

  • "Anzu is upstairs from Feinsteins and it makes a good place for dinner before the show. They have vegan options, which is great and hard to find in upscale restaurants. Very accommodating service."

  • "We chose to sit in the bar's lounge where there were no others, like a private dining room . Ordering off the bar menu( not the dinner menu) we ordered sliders: two small cheese burgers for the nice price of $6. The sliders were good as was the dragon roll, although I've had better. Their "Cherry Blossom" sushi roll is better, and is spectacular to look at because of the way it is plated. Service was friendly and excellent. It was early between 6-7pm so it had yet to get very busy. Nice calm delicious meal. Their dessert "The Fog" chocolate cake served in a bowl nested in a larger plate which had dry ice under the bowl. At service, water is poured into the bottom bowl and 'smoke' comes out so there is "fog'. What a surprise! Added fun."

  • "We decided to have dinner at Anzu because we were going to hear Paula West. When we realized there was what appeared to be a good restaurant in the hotel, we decided to dine there first and then go to the show. We had not previously heard about Anzu. We were not disappointed in the food and in the service. Everything we ordered was delicious. We will definitely go back and would have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant."

  • "Not much to say other than what's in the title. Nice place, service was very friendly, food was good. I don't know that I'd take a date or friends here, but I would see myself taking business associates."

  • "The restaurant is expensive and if I was visiting in SF as a tourist, I would have probably felt it worth the price. We were going to see Paula West at Feinstein's and did the restaurant for a splurge and the seating perk for the show. Raw sushi is not my favorite, but I was able to review the online menu. The tuna, crab, scallop and avocado roll was good and very fresh, I just would have preferred it cooked. Wait staff and ambiance were efficient, helpful and pleasant. Our wait was not that long for our sushi as suggested by the online reviews."

  • "Often hotel restaurants are somewhat generic and uninteresting. Though the ambiance at Anzu may be just a little reminiscent of the 1980's the food is certainly not. The sashimi was amazing, as was the wagyu beef you cook yourself at the table on a heated rock. It was a great experience and I would absolutely go back the next time I'm in San Francisco."

  • "The stars are not going to guide you as everything gets 4 stars-but-this place is a better experience than most. A nice sleek dining room with very good food. The portions are not large, moderate I would say. You will spend $60-70 for dinner of app, main, drink, dessert. The sushi rolls, and black cod as well as the beets 3-ways were very good in my experience."

  • "Lovely decor, great service, wonderful food presentation...main dishes were extremely bland.. However, the hot stone beef appetizer was outstanding."

  • "My wife and I had a post-Valentine's rendezvous at Anzu before a show at Feinstein's. I had the black cod and my wife had a beef filet. The taste and presentation of the food was splendid. Much thought and preparation went into both aspects. We enjoyed the many layers of flavor in each dish, with a cross-cultural blending of tastes. The service was as good as expected in a place like this. We dined early (5:15 pm) on a Saturday, so the restaurant was quiet."

  • "We had a very nice time at this beautiful restaurant, although the experience wasn't exceptional. Because it was Valentine's Day, we could only choose from a price-fixed menu ($85 a person, without wine) and while the food was tasty--particularly the haimachi and crab sushi, the portions were a bit small. There was also a bit of a wait to be seated, even though we had reservations and the restaurant was empty. My partner and I enjoyed the quietness of the place and our server was attentive, but it's too expensive, so we most likely wouldn't return. I would have liked to have eaten there choosing from Anzu's regular menu."

  • "I took a prospective customer to Anzu while in town for a trade show. They were flexible with my reservation time and party size, the food was very good, the waiter answered questions about wine options and was knowledgeable and the service was very good. The noise level was conducive to conversation with a large dining party. I will very likely dine at Anzu again if a similar occasion arises."

  • "Sashimi excellent. Main course was cold and bland. Waiter was friendly and offered discount to make up for poor food."

  • "It's a restaurant that a hotel is LUCKY to have! The 2 sushi rolls were ample and scrumptious. Service was impeccable and the staff was amazingly polite. The seared scallops are a MUST ORDER. They melted in my mouth and were accompanied by two pumpkin ravioli, in a lemon butternut squash sauce, very light. At the end of the meal, we were each presented with a "surprise", a delicious cupcake, packaged to go and complete with a Hotel Nikko chocolate. Outstanding touch! This is very near Union Square. Lunch is also quite nice and very reasonably priced. I highly recommend Anzu."

  • "Came for Dine About Town lunch to find out they don't participate in this program on Sundays for lunch, however, it wasn't stated on Open Table page of participating restaurants! Were a bit disappointed... Ordered from their regular menu. Very friendly service, and food was very good. I loved my Cinderella pumpkin soup! It was just about the end of their brunch time, so restaurant was very quiet. Will probably come again to try some other dishes."

  • "Anzu offers creative pan Asian food but the portion size is very small, the prices too high, the bread terrible and the wine prices too high for a Calif. restaurant."
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "Anzu's Dine-about-town offering was beautifully presented as well as being delicious. Good value for the money. Would definitely return, whether for lunch, dinner, or cocktails and appetizers."

  • "I went for the "Dine About Town" (DAT) 3-course lunch menu for $19. The 1st course exceeded all expectations because rather than choosing 1 of several starters as in most other DAT restaurants, they provide all four, in sampler-size on one plate. This was great and generous. The main salmon course, however, was a big disappointment as it too came in a tiny portion, only 1/3 the size of a normal salmon filet. As that was the main draw for why i selected this place above other DAT menus, I left unsatisfied. Far better would have been to provide a regular size salmon and not include dessert, or reduce the size of the first course. The ice-cream-ish dessert, by the way, was frozen rock solid and i couldn't even dent it with my fork."

  • "Conveniently located. A little overpriced, though."

  • "I had high expectations for this restaurant and they were not met. The service was polite but slow. The squash soup was good but not memorable and the duck breast was very chewy and not that flavorful. The quality of the food really did not justify the price."
