Zagat Survey calls it “Carmel’s long-standing paean to graciousness in dining out". Diner Reviews
  • "Our dining experience at this restaurant was extremely disappointing and we will not be going back. First, although the restaurant was empty, we were seated in a sun room that was blistering hot, with no air stirring and the sun beating in. When we looked clearly uncomfortable, the guy that brought us to our seats said not to worry as the sun would be going down soon. The air remained heavy and moist and unpleasant throughout our meal. My French Onion soup was the only decent part of the dinner. The Martini was terrible, as was the Beef Shortrib (unbelievably fatty), the Tuna Tartar wasn't fresh and was tasteless. My spouse's steak was salty, although it was a good cut of beef. We didn't order dessert and couldn't wait to leave."

  • "My group thoroughly enjoyed their dinner here . My son-in-law had the short ribs which he loved ! He is picky so they must have been especially good . Everyone else had the fish special which was a Hawaiian fish called MaChong ( probably spelled incorrectly) and it was fabulous ! We plan to dine at Anton and Michel again very soon. !"

  • "The only aspect of the dining experience at Anton & Michel that I would comment on would be the bread/butter service before the meal. They use the little wrapped butter packets that you have to open with your fingers and it's really messy. I think a much more elegant way to serve the bread would be to have the little ceramic butter containers with various types of butter - garlic butter, honey, tomato - there are many that would present themselves well, be easier to use and give diners a choice. Thank you."

  • "My husband and I went for both lunch and dinner (the next day) on a recent trip to Carmel. We had dined there last year and wanted to experience this wonderful restaurant once again. For lunch I had the French Onion soup and the Baramundi salad. Both were terrific. My husband had a salad and sandwich. His were also, both very good. The highlight was dinner! We shared a wonderful Pinot Noir while he had the maple duck and I the Kobe beef short ribs. Wow! Both of our dinners were superb in both flavor and presentation. The service here is impeccable and the atmosphere is very romantic. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for wonderful food, service and and extensive wine list :-) Enjoy!"

  • "Great menu, nicely prepared, solid bar service, and stands up to a 4-star rating."

  • "Anton & Michel has a very nicely priced ($28.50) three course Sunset Dinner with soup/salad, excellent entree choices and two nice dessert choices. These are the same items that are on their regular menu. Of course it is only offered between 5 and 6:30 but it is offered every day of the week. And the quality and the service are both excellent."

  • "We went to Anton and Michel to celebrate our first anniversary. We love good food and good wine. We often dine in the bar area of nice restaurants for convenience of service and selection. We chose to have an intimate anniversary dinner. Everything from the ambiance of the intimate decor along with the romantic looking pool and fountains, to the impeccable service, to the delicious food was absolutely wonderful. My husband had the lamb chops which were prepared perfectly. I had the short rib with pasta...I ate the whole dish which rarely happens...but it was fall apart delicious. We got married in Monterey at the Monterey Plaza Hotel and come to the Monterey/Carmel area often. We will definitely be back to Anton and Michel."

  • "I dine here annually on at least one of my several visits to Carmel each year. The standards at Anton & Michel remain very high, making dinner at this restaurant always enjoyable. Yes, it is traditional in its menu and service, but constant novelty in dining itself becomes boring. A meal here is a happy venture into the cultured past."

  • "This felt like a tourist trap. It's not expensive but the food is truly mediocre. I had the Niçoise salad and it was basically mescllun mix with a tuna steak from Safeway plopped on top. With some pickled ginger (really?), potatoes and beans. Wow. Not very good at all."

  • "I went for lunch and was a bit taken aback by how empty the restaurant was. Our table overlooked the pool and not another patron was in sight (although there were 3 other tables filled, each in a different area of the restaurant). We liked the quiet and feeling of privacy. We shared 2 entrees, a portobello mushroom sandwich with sweet potato fries and a beef brochette Cobb salad. The sweet potato fries were yummy...perhaps the best I've had and we enjoyed the mushroom sandwich. The salad was not as successful. The beef was dry and the salad and dressing were so-so. The best part was the chimichurri sauce for the beef. We had an enjoyable but not spectacular lunch. We will try it for dinner and report back."

  • "The restaurant is very pretty and the service pleasant and nonintrusive. The big disappointment was the food, which could best be characterized as uneven. Some dishes were perfect, with beautiful presentation and subtle but impressive favors. Other dishes were mediocre, with flavors and presentation befitting a lesser restaurant. Salads were overdressed. Cherries jubilee tasted strongly of alcohol. We had high hopes, but in this price range in Carmel, there are better options for foodies."

  • "The wine list was over the top!! Our waiter was exceptional and our food was delicious. We will return to this restaurant every time we're in Carmel. The bar looked inviting, but there wasn't time this trip. We loved the menu choices so much that we ordered three appetizers!!!"

  • "Anton & Michel is a fantastic restaurant. From the moment we entered and met the maitre d' to the time we left, we could not have enjoyed ourselves more. We chose this restaurant to celebrate our 20th Anniversary and we were not disappointed in any way. The maitre d' was friendly and helpful with our wine choice and the service from our waiter Victor was excellent. The food was outstanding and if one chooses this restaurant for dining, one will not be disappointed."

  • "If you are ever in Carmel, you have to have dinner at Anton & Michel!! Our family of 6 had a celebration and the food was fabulous! The Kobe Beef Short ribs were amazing and melted in your mouth. The duck was sensational, down to all of the flambe' desserts! We could not have asked for a better meal! Thank you!"

  • "I've been meaning to eat at Anton & Michel's and finally made it. I had a very hard time choosing a dish, because they all sounded delightful. The main dish I had was the best I've had and the wine selection was superb. I will definitely be going back."

  • "This is old school dining at it's luxurious finest. Where else can one go these days where the Caesar salad is prepared from fresh, raw ingredients at tableside? Likewise the rack of lamb and the dessert (in this case, Bananas Foster... or flambe). Granted, this combination was the $130 "Classic Dinner for Two" but we saw this type of prep at many other tables as well. Food is magnificent but the service is even BETTER! Our waiter and table attendants were on the ball and always right there when we needed but not obtrusive like many other places. This is definitely a go-to spot for us when we're in town!"

  • "A very notable wine list with a wide range of options at reasonable markup. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and all dishes arrived at the perfect time and at the perfect temperature. Our food was beautifully prepared and delicious. The tuna tartare was an exceptionally fresh cut of ahi, again, beautifully prepared with just the right amount of wasabi. The restaurant is quite attractive and has a modern Carmel feel. We will definitely return!"

  • "Whenever we visit Carmel, we make it a point to book dinner at Anton & Michel's. It's a place we enjoy sharing with friends who are always delighted with selection and service as are we. Given how often restaurants change it's nice to know that even with their updated decor, their core values of great food, quiet ambiance and consistently professional service are still part of the experience."

  • "Had a perfect evening celebrating a special occasion. Greeted warmly, received requested table, very friendly and efficient wait staff, and they comped our dessert. Dinner was delicious as was the wine. Presently in my top five of favorite restaurants. Jeanette Daniels"

  • "The ambience could not be better. It tells all about Carmel by the Sea, specially for people visiting from other cities/States. Most of all, the service. Our the best we have had in a long time. It was a great choice."

  • "Spent a night in Carmel to celebrate our 27th anniversary. Wanted to eat at another restaurant but they couldn't get us in so I settled on Anton & Michel and was I ever glad I did. Made a note on the OT reservation that it was an anniversary dinner, both the hostess and waiter (Victor) congratulated us, very nice touch. The food was very very good and at no time were we rushed, hard to find that these days! A very special place that we will frequent on our next trip down. Great job Anton & Michel we will be back!"

  • "Our food was fabulous but what made our evening was our server Loreli- what a gem- she knew her wines so well- that we loved the wine she reccommended and went to the winery the next day and joined their wine club."

  • "This was our second visit to this wonderful long-established restaurant we discovered on our last visit to Carmel. We are happy to say it was just as great as on our first visit last year. Great, diverse menu, great selection of wines from rare hard to find wines to a broad reasonably priced selection, and flamed desserts. Service was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. It is now very high on our local favorites list. We will definitely return our next trip to Carmel."

  • "This is a classic restaurants which has been in Carmel for years. My elderly mother and I chose it for dinner, because she remembered from years ago. It is in a wonderful spot, overlooking a sweet little patio with a water fountain. Our waiter, who has worked at the restaurant for over 20 years, was the perfect balance of attentive without being intrusive. I am a vegetarian, but there are no vegetarian meals on the menu. So, the chef made a special plate for me which was delicious. This is a quiet place with outstanding food and service."

  • "We shared a wonderful dinner for four here The restaurant is beautiful and well appointed. The dining room looks out onto a gracious and well groomed garden courtyard that is lighted at night. The bar is very cozy with a great fireplace and couches to lounge in. We enjoyed a three course meal of cesear salad, rack of lamb and bananas foster all for $119 for two which we thought was a great bargain. Each of the courses were prepared at our table the old fashioned way. The salad was fantastic, the entree loaded with great lamb and also lots of veggies, the bananas foster has about four kinds of liqueur flamed and put over ice cream. It was the best we had all ever had. Our waiter was gracious, informative, engaging and just a delight."

  • "A and M almost always has service and food that guarantees a pleasant and delicious dining experience. We went for a family birthday dinner and it was quite special. The Kobe beef short ribs were amazing, as were the duck breast and filet mignon . the only thing that made it less than perfect was the drop off in service. As the restaurant got busier our waiter was more absent. They seem to only have a couple of main waiters and then the water/bus boy. They need assistants that are trained and speak English The decor was recently updated but the paintings lack life and color. The bathroom should be fancier. You can't beat this place for a pleasant and special night out. It remains in our top three of favorite restaurants in Carmel."

  • "I the heart of Carmel by the sea, A&M is low key, down to earth and relaxed despite the high end luxury offered. Fabulous food moderately to more than that price wise, worth every dollar. I would recommend the food to all. The staff were genuine and courteous like eating at your best friends house."

  • "Had a weekend away with my husband and booked this restaurant as a surprise. At least I got that right, it was a surprise. I have been in America for nine years now and can honestly say this is in my top three of worst meals I have ever eaten. Our starter, my husband had the bruschetta, I had duck pate, the bread on both was stale, we sent them back. My husband had a steak which he said was ok, I had pork, it was horrible, no taste at all. We couldn't face dessert so left. I find it difficult to believe that this restaurant could survive serving such poor quality food in Carmel."

  • "We recently dined at Anton & Michel for both lunch and dinner during a January visit to Carmel. Lunch outside near the fountain was wonderful, and dinner on our final night in Carmel was excellent. Carmel is loaded with a lot of great restaurants, and we feel this is the best of the best! Recently remodeled with a little more modern feel, the restaurant maintains a comfortable feeling of elegance that is rare now a days. The staff is very experienced, very professional, and very friendly. Hats off to everyone involved with Anton & Michel - we can't wait to return!"

  • "After 30 years of going to Anton and Michel, this will be the last time. Food still very good but service not what it used to be. VERY LOUD. Waiter served us with stains on his shirt and he was not "spiffy clean" looking. Extremely loud. Yes, they had three tables of six, spread out around the restaurant, but very loud. We used to go there for a nice, quiet evening. Not anymore."

  • "Waiter was phenomenal. Attention yo every detail with being overbearing. Food was excellent. Lamb and filet cooked to perfection. Would go there again in a heart beat. Carmel has a lot of places to choose from and these guys know it. Their food, service and chef are top notch for that very reason! You won't be disappointed."

  • "Been there before. Specifically asked and confirmed table by window only to find it was pre-empted by couple (we were four). We were put next to a pillar and had to move the table to have elbow room. Mysterious rice/starch with wife's duck was cold. Her duck was medium rare, not medium as requested. My sole was tasty but too much oil. Our companions raved about their fish dishes (burundi?) Service by french waitress was great, we had requested her as server from prior experience. We'd go back again but not happy about not getting table location we requested, especially when we saw two people seated at table for four in location we asked for."
