Diner Reviews
  • "The food was nothing to write home about! Very ordinary. Nothing spectacular. "

  • "I have eaten here a dozen times. Last Sunday, I used this site (as always) for a solo lunch at 2:00. At the time of the booking, times were also available at 1:30 and 2:30. Arriving 10 minutes early, I was told there were no tables available "for one" and she had no idea when there would be one. The only option would be the bar? In many locations of the North End, the bar is a chosen option - not here. The line up for the 2 bathrooms is at your back. Also, the door to the kitchen is always swinging open and servers hang there waiting for drink orders. Families wait there until larger tables are pieced together for them. Their children are allowed soda and drinks at the bar. Taking up all available seats for 5-10 minutes? "

  • "Indifferent hostess on the way in. Average pizza with a bread-like dough that had probably been frozen. Our server was okay, but, the rest of the staff looked bored and ignored everything going on in the restaurant. Hostess ignored us on the way out."

  • "I hosted 2 friends for the weekend and booked dinner at AF one night. Unfortunately, the experience fell far below expectations, as the service was incredibly disappointing. The host seated us at 10pm for a 9pm reservation - frustrating given the number/timeline of plans I had for my guests and the activities we had cut short to arrive at the restaurant on time. I approached the hostess shortly thereafter to civilly explain my issue, and she was understanding and thanked me for my tone. She spoke to management on our behalf, which had me hopeful that they'd remedy the situation. Instead, we received a random dessert with no acknowledgement as to why, waiting as the last patrons while the staff sat and loudly chatted at nearby tables."

  • "The food and service was ok. But I've had better of both for much less cost."

  • "This restaurant was WAY too noisy, couldn't even have a conversation with my boyfriend. Do not go here if you are looking for a relaxing romantic time. However, if you are looking for a frat party club type atmosphere (sans dancing!), then this would be the place for you. Had to wait 30 minutes for our "reserved" table at a cramped bar with no space and people and servers bumping into you all of the time. Tables too close together, servers were always rushing by and you always have to be careful not to get hit. Service not ftoo riendly (how could they be...you wouldn't be able to hear them anyway). Food was good, but not "over the top". Very much ruined by raucus, saloon type atmospehere. I couldn't wait to leave."

  • "loved the food, service was personal and authentic. flavors were rich, like only fresh ingredients can provide. would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "I've been to Antico Forno several times and have always been happy with the quality/value for the area. Generally the ambiance and service have been good. However, our recent experience on a Sat night left a bit to be desired. We arrived a few minutes early for our rese, but had to wait at least 35 minutes past our reservation time to be seated. I know it's hard for restaurants to manage timing, but they clearly had overbooked. What's more, we were not offered any sort of apology. We wouldn't have minded waiting but it was so loud we had to shout to hear each other at the bar. That said, the food and service were good once we were seated. I'll return but will skip busy Fri and Sat nights in the future."

  • "On a Saturday night, this place jumps! One grumpy guy waiting in line outside to get a table was heard to mutter, "This place can't be worth the wait." People who know say, "Oh yes, it is!" The food is that good, the service is amazingly good and the energy is fantastic."

  • "The eggplant appetizer was delicious and huge! The short ribs and risotto were good as well."

  • "The only complaints I have are: when waiting for a table there wasn't much room to wait because the bar was packed... And the noise level was a bit too high. Otherwise, the meal was perfect. The two of us tried the restaurant week menu. Our waitress made excellent recommendations. I wound up getting the baked eggplant with ricotta and tomato sauce as an ap and the braised short ribs with mushroom risotto for a main dish. The ribs were absolutly incredible and the rest was perfect as well. My friend got the veal Parm as a dish and the meatball on a bed of green with marinated red pepper as an app. Those were amazing also, but the ribs were definitely best. The tiramisu was our final dish, what was delicious. A truly great meal."

  • "We ate at 4:30 pm so the place was starting to rev up. Comfortable setting. Location was perfect for any activity afterwards. Menu for dine out Boston great. Portions were just average. Nice wine list. Bread was fresh and delish! Service was great but we were early. I am not sure how late they stay open for late night eating. I would love this place to be open late for a pizza and wine and dessert. Their desserts looked huge! Nice selection but I was too full from dinner to have any."

  • "we go here often. i love their mussels, caesar salad, and roast chicken. the service is good and the people are friendly. if they only had a full bar, it would be wonderful"

  • "Had a nice dinner at this restaurant Wait staff friendly and efficient. However noise level was way too high. This place would be great if you had a large party or family celebration with young kids. I wish it could be designed a little better to perhaps make the dining experience more pleasant .My overall rating probably would have been higher if the dining atmosphere was better."

  • "I enjoyed Antico Forno a lot. The combination of bread and olive oil was probably the best bread appetizer I've had. I also had the meatball salad which was better than mediocre, but I have Italian family members that make better. The pasta carbanara was probably the second best I've had after a restaurant in New York City. The tiramisu was good. This restaurant seemed to have a lot of space and seemed modern for the North End and wasn't crowded for lunch. Now that I've been here, I probably won't be back because I would want to try other restaurants in the North End. In closing, I'm glad I went, but it wasn't special enough to bring me back."

  • "Great overall experience. One flaw...I booked a reservation on line but still had to wait almost an hour for our table. The cocktails were excellent so that made us for the wait."

  • "Antico Forno is definitely a traditional Italian restaurant in the North End of Boston, Salem Street. Unique is pizza and meals prepared in paper are cooked in wood burning stove adding old-time flavor. Portions are large. Menu to please all. Pasta dishes excellent. Veal/Chicken Parm superb. Noisy, energetic neighborhood small-ish restaurant. Make reservations and still be prepared to wait on busy Sat. Nights. There is a bar to wait at. Best Tirimasu I have had. Winner of many awards. Worth a wait to eat here."

  • "Noisy but happy atmosphere. Helpful waitstaff. Our party ordered pizzas and the shellfish pasta, but none of the meals would have warranted a recommendation. Not bad, but not all that good."

  • "We've eaten here several times and, as expected, the food was great. Although it was fairly busy, service was prompt. We even ordered a meal "to go" for our son who was not able to meet us. Everything was great. You really cannot go wrong with any choice."

  • "Absolutely phenomenal. Great food, great service, it was a little loud but it really didn't matter. Make a reservation abd show up on time."

  • "Went here because it was a "Best of Boston " pick. I did note that the reviews were quite variable. I felt at least it would be "comfort food". We had the antipasto traditionale that was a quite large plate of nothing special. Slice commercail smoked meats and smoked cheese, etc. I had the Parmigiana di vitello, Veal parm, which was breaded feel, not of first quality, load os sauce a one square of cheese plobbed on top. My friend had rigatoni alla salsiccia. He thought it was okay. I thought it was not very appealing. A dish of strange shaped rigatoni with chuncks of what looked liked dried out sausage."

  • "My family of six had an excellent lunch on a Recent Sunday afternoon. The atmosphere was relaxing and the service was great. The food was enjoyed by all,"

  • "Great place to meet a friend and dine before heading off to watch a Bruins game!"

  • "Food was excellent. Waitress was very difficult to communicate with. Extremely tight quarters"

  • "We don't understand how this restaurant won best of anything. The food and service aren't bad, just nothing to write home about. My husband's bolognese was overly sweet, like a jarred sauce. My anchovy pizza was overly salty. The spread they provided with the bread was tasteless. Was it red pepper? Tomato? We couldn't tell. It definitely could have used a bit of garlic. The entire outside of my wine glass was sticky, with a couple things (crumbs?) stuck to it. (I got a replacement). Apparently, a lot of people love this place because it was packed, but we just don't get it. There are plenty of really great restaurants in the North End to choose from."

  • "The Frutti de mare was oustanding, along with the other dishes my group had. Can't go wrong with the antipasto salad to start with!"

  • "This restaurant is one of the best in the North End. The food and service are great. Only draw back is seating is tight and it can be very noisy."

  • "I've been to Antico Forno several times now and they continue to be outstanding. It's definitely my go to place in the North End. The first time I went I had a visitor on a business trip from Italy who had to eat gluten free. He loved the restaurant and his gluten free meal. I enjoyed it so much that I continued to go there for any occasion including family birthday dinner, business dinners, friends from out of town, etc. They never disappoint. Their appetizers (especially their Arancini and Involtini di Melanzane) and dinner entres are excellent (pizza is awesome too). Service was excellent as well!"

  • "Despite having a 7:30 reservation, we were not seated until 8:15! Once seated, the service was attentive, the food was fair but the location of the table (near the kitchen) added to the overall noise level. So tight the servers kept hitting my chair as they attempted to pass our table to serve others."

  • "What a disappointment. Was Boston Magazine North End restaurant of the year in 2012 so expected good food at least. What we got was lackluster, cheesy fare. The sauce was almost indistinguishable from that from a jar. Service was gruff but that was not unexpected given other reviews. Skip this place and spend a bit more at one of the more celebrated North End Italian restaurants."

  • "This was my second time at Antico Forno and both visits were excellent. We had the brick oven pizza as an appetizer. I highly recommend this if you have at least four diners, as it gives you a chance to taste some of the best pizza in Boston and not have your main course just be pizza. Between the four of us we had the chicken parm, gnocchi, and fettuccini with prosciutto in cream sauce. All were delicious. The staff is friendly and fast (we were in and out in a little over an hour and did not feel the least bit rushed). The atmosphere is cozy and warm and the food cannot be beat!"

  • "outstanding..a bit noisy...our table was by the kitchen but it was New Year's Eve...very reasonable for the food quality. I would return and recommend it highly to friends."

  • "Antico Forno is a default setting for me when North End Italian is the goal. Very good food, very reasonable prices, and attentive staff. The only negative this last time I went there for dinner (March 3, 2014) was that it was very loud at first. My sister, visiting from New York, and I sat side-by-side rather than across from each other, so we could talk and hear each other. The noise level went down very significantly as the restaurant emptied out while we had our leisurely dinner. Aside from the noise issue, I think Antico Forno is a great place where you'll always be pleased with your dining experience."

  • "Our table of 6, all "foodies" ordered 3 different pizzas and shared a salad and calamari. We agreed that the crust is excellent-crusty, flavorful and not too thick. Wine was good and reasonable. Had pleasant service. The noise level was high on a Monday early dinnertime and the tables are very close together."

  • "Tried Antico Forno for a business lunch and had a wonderful experience. The restaurant was not very busy on a Monday, the food was excellent and the wait staff was attentive but did not rush us when we extended our lunch well beyond what would normally be expected."
