A word from Anthony's Fish Grotto
Anthony's Fish Grotto is San Diego's original seafood restaurant. Founded in 1946, Anthony's still uses our original family secret recipes to serve what Zagat's 2013 City Guide calls San Diego's Most Popular Seafood. An extensive menu of seafood is complimented by chicken, beef and pork selections, ensuring that there is something for everyone. The building is built over the waters of San Diego Bay, so it offers diners some of the best views in the city.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We try to eat at least one meal at Anthony's when visiting San Diego because the food never disappoints. The decor has not changed in the thirty years since I first at Anthony's and the noise level at peak hours is still incredibly high. The shrimp cocktail was fresh and delicious. My wife had the crab cakes which were full of crab but slightly overdone. They were still tasty but the lemon sauce was slightly bland. I had one of the daily specials, Prince Edward mussels. Anthony's offered several different preparations and I chose the bleu cheese/wine sauce. Most of the mussels were cooked to perfection (a couple small ones were overdone and chewy). The asparagus offered as a side was cooked just right and flavorful."

  • "I have been dining at Anthony's since the 1950's. So sad they have closed several of their locations. Love the one on the Bay front but can't eat there as often as I would like since they closed two of their locations that were much closer to me. But the food is still good and they have a great selection of seafood as well as other entries."

  • "This huge restaurant is in the middle of the waterfront tourist zone so I wasn't expecting much. The view was great on the water, the service was excellent, and the food was surprisingly good! And the prices were reasonable. As a result I'd recommend Anthony's to anyone visiting San Diego."

  • "We had a delicious meal. Service was very good. We know that this restaurant is a San Diego institution, having been continuously operating for more than 60 years. We enjoyed dinner here with friends and usually visit Anthony's Fish Grotto each time we visit San Diego. The scallops entree was delicious."

  • "Food was good, service great... But definitely would be nicer if they had a 'family' section... Hard for other adults to enjoy a conversation or the view with babies and kids yelling behind you."

  • "Anthony's is a landmark restaurant that remains true to quality food and service. The view is unbeatable. The food selection is plentiful with classic favorites and enough new trends to keep it interesting. The service is friendly and efficient and accommodating. Anthony's will always be my favorite when visiting San Diego."

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant several times, but this was a disaster. 1-all 3 meals were over cooked and tasteless. 2-we asked for a certain waiter and we were he went home. A half hour later, he was serving people right near our table. I do not like to be lied to. 3- we only mentioned one meal was pretty badly over cooked, and we received an apology and a free dessert. I believe the meal should been removed from the bill. In our opinion, it will be a long, long time until we make the 90 mile drive to this restaurant ."

  • "We've been coming here for 40 of the 68 years it's been open and it doesn't disappoint. The service is great, the food is great and it's a great spot to catch a sunset and have a delicious meal. Parking can be challenging arrive early so you can ensure a spot from a departing customer."

  • "I have eaten at Anthony's many times when we visit San Diego and have never been disappointed. When we entered at 06:00pm there were very few diners but almost full when we left. On this visit we tried two items never tried before, the "Crispy Brussels Sprouts" was outstanding and the "Clam Chowder" was the best I have ever eaten."

  • "Unfortunately the quality of the food has gone down at this restaurant. Before arriving in San Diego we were talking about going back to Anthony's. We left feeling let down and most likely won't return again. For the price there are much better seafood options out there. You're pretty much paying for the view of the ocean! Service was great, there was a price discrepancy which was resolved quickly by the staff."

  • "Both of our families have enjoyed the family dining heritage at Anthony's for several generations. It always brings back memories of dinners of our childhood. The food is always excellent and served promptly. Get there early to get a seat at the large windows. Seafood incredibly fresh and a great selection of cocktails and craft beers. C&H"

  • "It was great experience would recommend it to all my friend in family in Phoenix. When they visit San Diego. The service from server Saks and Caesar was "Outstanding". Caesar would be make a great server and Anthony would benefit from this so much. So friendly, customer service oriented."

  • "We had reservations for 7:00pm and we checked in at 6:45pm. We were not seated until almost 8:00pm. When we inquired at 7:15 they had apparently lost us somewhere in the shuffle. The food was mediocre at best. And our server appeared rushed and bothered. We have eaten here many times in the past but we think it might be time to move on to something else. San Diego has other fish restaurants that have both superb food and service."

  • "I could not have been any happier with the food or the service. The lobster tail was affordable and tasted excellent. Our waiter (Ricardo) was very attentive to our needs and the owner (Marilyn) even stopped in to make sure that we were happy. The food was comparable to several five star restaurants with out the pretentiousness. The view of the bay was breathtaking. We are going back tomorrow and will visit everytime we go to San Diego."

  • "I ordered the fish and shrimp with the red potato mashed potatoes and it was excellent. Our table was close to the window and the view was of the harbor was great. I took pictures from the window. I am from Minnesota but come to San Diego and will be back to dine at Anthony's again."

  • "This was exactly what we were looking for! A nice restaurant on the water that was still casual and kid friendly. It was a little on the high price side but the food was worth it. Also a great view for fireworks on Sat night."

  • "My sister-in-law visited from Maryland and we only had a short time to get together with her. Anthony's has always been a family favorite and they didn't disappoint. We were seated at the window with a beautiful view of the bay. The service was very good with very little disruption of the lively conversation. The food, as usual, was delicious and left no room for desert. What can I say about the atmosphere? A wonderful meal with a gorgeous view of the sun setting over the bay in America's finest city ... enough said. I recommend Anthony's for any special occasion or to just treat yourself."

  • "Have been going to Anthony's in LaMesa for about 50 years and enjoyed every minute of it. We prefer LaMesa for the ambiance and parking. We like the harbor location but parking is the pits. Food is the slightly different at both locations probably due to the cook but usually very good."

  • "The Anthony's I remember is very good food, served quickly and nicely, sometimes we were standing in line but it was fine being moved in and out very quickly. You didn't spend much time there but they were great at not making you feel rushed. Now, they take reservations but we were there for almost two hours. The food was good but they don't serve a salad any longer with dinner and the steamed vegetables that I remember were always delicious and plentiful. Now, you get four little asparagus. I don't think i'll go again, too many good restaurants too close by."

  • "We've come to Anthony's every year for our dear friends' birthdays & anniversary and have always left feeling celebrated. Sadly, one was missing this year but we were celebrating in her honor and left disappointed. We don't drink alcohol, and wonder if that was the reason for less than generous service. As an aside, felt a little "nickeled and dimed" by being charged extra for a house salad with dinner entree and having to ask for bread. I can see not automatically bringing it to the table if no one is going to eat it, but an offer would have been nice. Food was good, but not outstanding; pasta dish surprisingly small with few shrimp and halibut was a bit overdone and no longer hot. Beautiful view though, and our server Gina was wonderful!"

  • "The appetizer - coconut shrimp - was to die for -- it was absolutely delicious; I was a bit disappointed with the crab cake but everything else we had was great. The wait staff was outstanding. I will return when I am in the San Diesgo area again and I would recommend Anthony's to others."
