Anthony's Fish Grotto is San Diego's original seafood restaurant. Founded in 1946, Anthony's still uses our original family secret recipes to serve what Zagat's 2013 City Guide calls San Diego's Most Popular Seafood. An extensive menu of seafood is complimented by chicken,beef and pork selections, ensuring that there is something for everyone.   • "I hosted a small dinner party at Anthony's for family and friends and it was a delicious meal. We watched the sunset from our table, overlooking the San Diego Harbor. What a spectacular experince. Gina Marie was our server and she was awesome! Very attentive and so very kind! Great dining experience! "

  • "Service and view were good. Food was pretty bad. My wife got some grilled salmon which was overcooked. That plus some grilled asparagus and rice that looked like it came out of a box cost $27 for lunch. My salmon reuben was okay, but the amount of canned/boxed food that the server mentioned that the restaurant was used was not in line with the prices. I can see now why the restaurant was so empty for Sunday lunch, despite there being a huge conference in town."

  • "We got there about a 1/2 early for our reservation and got seated immediately in a booth that we had requested. The waiter, Anthony was wonder. Friendly, witty, and attentive. The wine, and food were perfectly wonderful. Since I was the driver, I was drinking soda, Jose made sure I always had a fill up when I needed it. I have never seen anyone work harder than Jose, he was friendly and attentive. We had a great evening thanks to Anthony and Jose."

  • "Perhaps my expectations were set too high in that we were returning to San Diego after more than 41 years. What I was hoping to relive was a romantic dinner we had then. What we had was a mediocre meal, poorly seasoned and cold food, and service that was lacking. Maybe the excitement of a twenty-something have changed to the more mature tastes of a sixty-something, but it was quite a disappointment. However, the view of the harbor was still nice."

  • "The restaurant is right at the harbor and is in a beautiful setting. We went there after reading good reviews. The food was "ok" but for a restaurant right on the ocean front I thought they would have fresh fish. The only fish that was fresh was the Red Snapper. The rest was previously frozen and a bit over cooked. They did have good clam chowder. All in all for over $20.00 per plate, I would not go back."

  • "We found Anthony's in almost every San Diego food review, and also on the Zagat's list. Wanting to have some great seafood we don't normally find in land-locked Colorado, we decided to make reservations via Open Table. About 10 minutes got us a seat by the water. It was about 30 minutes before sunset, and our friendly waitress Diane got us drinks and bread with the house butter. She came back and took our order, offered up some suggestions, and let us know the specials. We ordered some of the fresh catch fish, a couple of appetizers, and had a great time visiting and watching the sunset. Our dinners arrived, and everything was fantastic. We even left room for dessert, and were equally wowed. Overall, a great San Diego experience!"

  • "After all these years, we finally went to Anthony's Fish Grotto. The four of us had four different entrees, plus shared an appetizer. Our waiter was a delight, and we were lucky enough to be seated by the window. But the food was just adequate, and it's no cheaper than many better restaurants. Not a single dish was memorable. The wine list is on a par with the food. And although the harbor view is nice, it would be better to have an outdoor balcony or windows that open for fresh air. We definitely know better places to go than this."

  • "It was really overly warm in the dining room. Kind of stuffy. The lobster tail seemed overcooked and they served my salmon dry (gluten free). They did bring me a dill sauce I could put on them, which is good because the plain, melted butter wasn't doing much for me. Love the cole slaw"

  • "The server we had was very knowledgeable and made some outstanding recommendations. He didn't try to sell us the most expensive dishes. He recommended based on his own experience. Very prompt with our orders and very polite. The manager came over shortly after we received our dishes to see how everything was going. She seemed sincere in our responses. I ordered the swordfish, it had great flavor and tasted very fresh. You have a great view of the bay, and the restaurant is close to many attractions. I received a coupon after going to the Maritime Museum for a free cup of clam chowder. This was very good. I recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the San Diego area, the price is low, the service is great!"

  • "We finally made it to Anthony's and got the best seat in the house. The view was wonderful. We had the famous clam chowder and calamari. The chowder lived up to its famous status. Rich and creamy without a speck of grit. The calamari on the other hand was disappointing. It wasn't anything special and lacked flavor. The sauces that came with the calamari were just as flavorless as the calamari. With that being said we are looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu. The service was good but the waiter seemed upset that we were only having soup and appetizers."

  • "The reservation online process was easy, however, we did not get seated on time. After checking in with the hostess it seemed she "lost" us. We had to remind them three times before we were finally seated. There were 3 of us and a party of 20 w/o a reservation was seated first. The server was rushed and didn't listen to our questions or remember our drinks. The food was wonderful and worth the wait despite our problems."

Restaurant is very open so that all tables can get at least a little view of the harbor, while this is nice, it does make it feel a little less elegant.   • "My wife and I were in town for a night and wanted a view without spending "stupid money" on a quiet dinner together. We chose Anthony's for the location primarily. Our reservation was at 7:00 pm on a Saturday night. Upon arrival we were seated immediately. Not like some other places we've been to that made us wait 45 minutes to honor our reservation. Our server Miles, was top shelf! Food was great, wife and I both agreed on that. The only thing that was bothersome was the bright lighting from above. It was too bright in there primarily because it didn't allow a clear view out the window at night with the glare on the glassss all we could see out the window was a reflection of ourselves : ) Hope to revisit under candlelight next time!!"
