Diner Reviews
  • "Great food, great service, excellent wine pairings and beautiful outdoor patio out back. Our favorite place for dinner in Andersonville - if not the entire north side of Chicago."

  • "First class italian food and a good wine list with lots to choose from by the glass and by the bottle. Casual, relaxing atmosphere with good service for a really enjoyble meal."

  • "One of the best italian restaurants in the city. A hidden gem. The family that owns this restaurant has been doing food right. This is not your typical marinara on pasta restaurant. This restaurant is about flavors and quality and you can tell."

  • "For me it was a fore theater option, recommended by the Raven Theater. I love Italian food. I was expecting your standard pasta, ravioli dishes. To my surprise, everything on the menu was new for me. Had I known what I was ordering was not what I expected; I honestly, probably wouldn't have tried it! But absolutely everything was wonderful. Our waiter was extremely helpful with our wine selection. The staff was mindful of our theater reservation. When necessary they "nudged" us; but we never felt rushed."

  • "Ok place to eat if someone else is paying. A bit noisy and crowded. Good service. The large pasta dishes are on the small side."

  • "We've been going to Ante Prima for several years, once or twice a year, but had not been back for over a year. The experience has not changed much in that time. The food is unique and interesting but there are real winners and dishes that are just so-so. A welcome change was a good waiter but I was not happy when he steered me to a more expensive wine that was not a good a match to what I communicated I wanted. My wife, the picky eater, did not like her grilled endive salad but her pasta dish was fine. I had a good salad, the octopus (my favorite of the night), and the lamb sausage pasta that was also good. My vegetarian son and girlfriend shared a cauliflower dish they said had too much olive taste but enjoyed the shrimp and octopus."

  • "Great food, service and experience. Feels like a neighborhood favorite with a flavor for great Chicago cuisine. Would highly recommend. We were one of few tourist there and the wait staff took us on a tour of the menu offering various recommendations. From the wine to the homemade breadsticks, everything was delicious and reasonably priced. Just note, if you are staying downtown, it's about a 20 min/$20 cab, but worth it to experience this gem."

  • "We love Anteprima! Food is delicious and not what you'll find at other Italian restaurants. Options are great for sharing so you can try lots of options. Beautiful outdoor area in back (if it ever gets warm enough). Definitely one of our favorite Italian--or any--restaurants in Chicago!"

  • "My husband and I took a friend there for dinner. So glad we chose such a terriffic place. Everything delicious. Lobster bisque, argua salad, lamb meatballs, roasetd carrots to begin. Spaghetti, butternut squash ravioli, grilled swordfish followed. Finally a wonderful dessert, and all with a great bottle of wine. The menu is so amazing, what to order from the fantastic choices. We took our time and no one made us feel hurried. Great experience."

  • "Reviews seemed unanimously approving across the board. Things started to go wrong at the outset. The restaurant is a small and for couples. We were a party of five. They pushed two couples' tables together and it was cramped. While the wine menu is robust, the food menu was sparse and left a lot to be desired. What was served was variable in quality. My wife liked her swordfish. I had a whole "porgy" which is really sea bream. It's a bony fish and the waiter worked valiantly to rid it of most of them. But it was simply was not well seasoned or cooked and came out tasteless. This expensive dish was served with six burnt fingerling potato sections. At least my wife got couscous. Waiter was prompt and efficient. Wouldn't go again."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner very much! We were however greeted by a host who was clearly stressed at first and had a bit of an attitude. He later warmed up and seated us as requested. I think their bartenders always shake one of the best martini's ever. I appreciate when the hands on owner is there because he always tries to make sure that everything is perfect about our experience. The food was excellent and although I usually don't eat desert, I thought the deserts were amazing too! Really a treat to go to Anteprima!"

  • "Food is exceptional. Service, now for a second time in a month was horrible. Waiters were excellent, BUT bar tender on previous visit was rude, person calling to confirm reservation was rude, person greeting you at door was gruff."

  • "We love Anteprima and as always, had a lovely dinner. I really like the smaller portion options in the pasta section. And, we all loved sharing from your more than ample and quite delicious appetizer section."

  • "Absolutely fantastic place - adorable ambiance, very knowledgeable and top notch staff, and the menu is to-die-for. I was really impressed with how large their regular menu is, plus there were a ton of daily specials, plus a GREAT price-fixe deal. Best calamari that we've had since Capri! Definitely focus on the appetizers, pastas and entrees... we had the almond cream cake and the cranberry bread pudding for dessert, and they were just ok. Great Italian wine list!"

  • "I went on a Wednesday evening on a frigid night and expected it to be quiet, but the place was buzzing. A birthday was being celebrated and the energy was good. Enjoyed a lovely bottle of wine and the grilled octopus hit the spot. It was a nice warm and friendly respite from the bitter cold outside the storefront window!"

  • "Had a wonderful dinner with some friends and our server was fantastic. He made a small error in our order but corrected it immediately and seamlessly. Since we were talking so much we kind of stayed longer than we should but did not feel uncomfortable doing so even though the restaurant was full. The food was great, we were all more than happy and finished everything on the plates. Wine recommendations were also good."

  • "New to this restaurant and will be back for certain. The food is amazing and overall the place is great! Our only issue was the lighting - needs to be consistent table-wise."

  • "My boyfriend and I came here and were pretty blown away. Even though it was Valentine's Day and there were a lot of reservations, we were seated right at our reservation time the waiter was only around when we needed him. We didn't feel pressured to hurry up to eat and order faster. The food was incredible, I had the salmon ,which basically melted in my mouth and he had the shrimp and lobster risotto which was probably the best either of us had ever had. The actual restaurant is pretty simple, a single room with minimal decorations, but it helped us focus more on the service, food, and each other. It was simply wonderful."

  • "Fantastic food, and ambiance. Bar is small, and not many options. Disappointed they ran out of the "cocktail of the day" before 9pm. Our server was very nice, but the service was extremely slow. Would not recommend if you are in a hurry."

  • "My girlfriend and I went on Valentine's Day (on a reservation for 6pm) and were immediately seated upon arrival 5 minutes early. The server was very attentive-- came at all the right times, never seemed rushed, and my water glass was never below half full. He also had good recommendations for wine, despite our embarrassing lack of experience with Italian wines. The food was very good, especially the beet/ricotta ravioli. I had the seared sea scallops special and they were quite nice, but a little too salty for me-- could have used just a bit more of the butternut squash puree to balance it out. My only complaint was that the seating was pretty tight with all the other couples, but that's most likely only because it was V-Day."

  • "Very nice menu- great waiter- very loud and tables too close. You have to be up to the challenge of the "togetherness" dining experience. Or come when it's not so crowded."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The food is great, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. After we received our entree, we were never checked on until we were done eating :( Our waiter was hanging out at the end of the bar. If we try again, we will just ask for the other waiter. He was buzzing around, enjoying his time."

  • "We make Antiprima our pre-theater dinner spot when we see productions at The Raven Theatre (just north on Clark). The menu changes periodically, so it's always a fresh experience. The one dish that is a keeper on the menu all the time is the Orrechiette pasta which I highly recommend. In terms of the portions, it's just the right amount of food and it's not overpriced. Enjoy."

  • "I love AntePrima and always take guests here from out of town. The cocktails are fabulous, and food is always exceptional"

  • "Food was good, but a little too salty to call it "very good." Tables are very close together, and on a packed Friday night, it was so noisy you could barely talk to your tablemates. Service generally good and my cocktail was generous, although I asked for a wedge of lemon and got only a twist. If they can cut down on the salt and the noise, then I would recommend it."
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "The food at Anteprima is well prepared and very original in its conception. The portions are right sized and wine list is excellent. Once it gets full, it can get noisy and a little difficult to carry on a conversation. In the winter, you definitely want to be as far away from the door as possible."

  • "My wife and I had dinner on a Friday. Salumi plate, gnocchi, and pork dishes were very good. Services was around if needed but suggestions were not offered. Service wasn't bad. Only fair. We certainly intend on returning."

  • "I have been going to this restaurant for years and have usually had a pretty good meal - but recently was a real disappointment. As usual we were served an complimentary small bite - which was some kind of freezing cold tart. Several antipasti to begin - carrots were so, so and there were almost no greens that were listed, the radish antipasta was limp and cold, tasteless and few hazelnuts in view - The soup had good flavor but was lukewarm. I had the hake which was overpowered by very garlicky mushrooms - really a terrible idea - and a drizzle of some kind of "pesto". Hake is a delicate fish and needs a more sophisticated treatment. The restauranteur has opened several new places, and now this one seems to be suffering."

  • "Our group of four loved our recent dinner here. Risotto, slow cooked pork shoulder, and the crispy brick chicken were prepared perfectly and warmed us on a cold night. The leek and mushroom risotto was the best risotto dish we'd ever eaten, and the other entries were served with pretty wonderful side dishes. And before our entrees, we all oooohed and aaaahed over the chicken liver appetizer that raised liver to a food pedestal. The ambiance of this place, the servers, and the great food are marred, though, by the noise level. Usually we come very early when we dine here-- to avoid the roar that is inevitable after 7:30 pm. We will continue to dine at Anteprimo but not with a group or after 6:30 pm probably."

  • "I eat at Anteprima regularly because it's always really good, but this latest meal was spectacular. They have a great specials menu right now with all kinds of exciting choices -- the Sweet Potato Sformato wars amazing, as were the Kale Salad with persimmon and pine nuts and the Crispy Cardoons. And the standard grilled octopus appetizer was as delicious as always. For my main course I had the ribs served with barlotti beans and preserved lemon yogurt and they were to die for. The wine list has a really interesting variety of Italian choices. I love this place and feel so lucky to live nearby!"

  • "The food tonight was not up to par. We order pork Saltimbocca and it had nooooo taste. Should stick to the pastas. Their breadsticks however are some of the best in the city if that is any consolation. Will try again."

  • "Love the restaurant decor and ambience. However the service was terrible, always searching for our waiter and had to order our entree from a different staff member."

  • "The food was delicious as always, the grilled octopus appetizer was among the best octopus that I ever had, and Anteprima's Weekday prix fixe menu is one of the finest values for a high quality meal that I have ever encountered."

  • "Best meal I've ever had! The octopus, scallops and lamb were outstanding. Topped it off with the Hemingway cocktail which was amazing as well! I never write reviews so this says a lot."

  • "This is our second time dining at Anteprima on a Sunday for their prix fix menu. Both times the service and food was excellent. Sundays are always a little quieter, so it is difficult to judge the noise level on a busier day. An excellent go-to place for a lovely dinner out."

  • "This is a repeat visit. We've never been disappointed by any visit. Reservations are almost a must. Be ready for small tables and tight spaces, but the food is totally worth the while. The menu offers a wide variety of fresh and creative dishes. Absolutely delicious and spoilt."
