Diner Reviews
  • "The food was very good. We had been given a gift card, but were pleasantly surprised. Lots of unusual choices compared to the "usual" Italian restaurant."

  • "This is one of our favorite neighborhood joints and the last 2 times we have eaten here, we were underwhelmed. The cod in parchment with pesto and veggies was terribly bland and last time the salmon I ordered was over cooked and fishy smelling. The menu specials were the exact same from 3 weeks prior which was a bummer because it wasn't that great of a specials list as it has been in the past. I hope the passion and love for the exquisite food gets back to how it was because we really do LOVE this place!"

  • "Aside from the noise and the post dinner craned sore neck and hoarse voice, Anteprima was EXCELLENT. Server was attentive, food came out in timely fashion and was very tasty."

  • "Food & service great - always have a good dining experience here - I moved away from Andersonville but still think of it as my neighborhood Italian go-to place!"

  • "Amazing food, wonderful small-restaurant feel, patio romantic and inviting. Prix fixe menu is a great deal for really delicious food! We were so full when we left! That isn't to mention how accommodating they were - I asked to change my reservation to add more people at the last second and they were very gracious."

  • "This was our second time to Anteprima, and the food was consistently delicious! I want to go back with a larger group so we can try more things. However, when we arrived, we stood around awkwardly, because my chair was wet. It was a humid night and it had just rained, so there was condensation dripping from the ductwork above. Once we sat, I had to wear my rain coat, because it continued to drip throughout the meal. This is why I rated the ambience lower than I would have otherwise."

  • "I came upon Anteprima geographically! And wow was I impressed! I keep coming back and each time it is better and better! It's now my new special favorite. Garden is quiet enough and cute enough to hear your friends talk to you! Service is excellent. And even parking on the street is possible. Food is special but not "precious"! I give it 6 stars!"

  • "Been here on a number of occassions. I have always been extremely satisfied with everything ive ever had. My wife and I love the 29 dollar fixed price menu This occasion we had the grilled octopus, prawns, orechetti, asparagus ravioli, strip steak , &the lamb. Everything was outstanding."

  • "Have been here many times and you can count on high quality. The prix fix menu is a bargain, allowing you to share a lot of things. This guy knows what he's doing."

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant with large menu filled with seasonal specialties and many daily specials. Service was good except for a rude host (owner). Would definitely recommend this for a dinner w mom or weekday getaway dinner. Not overly romantic or refined but delicious and special nonetheless."

  • "I know Italians love food well salted, but over the last three visits here, the predominant flavor is SALT! Just too much. Menu is great, with great antipasti vegetable salads and hot appetizers. Especially good is the octopus-very tender, but still a little too salty. Fresh pastas were better than dried, and the orchiette with sausage was well recommended, but very spicy. Overall, a very interesting menu that is well executed, albeit all the food at our party of six was over-salted. This has been our experience over three visits now. I would still try again, but I would request our food to be less salted. Great Italian wine list."

  • "The selection of pastas and their quality was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the Orechiette and the Asparagus Ravioli. The pastas were all homemade, from the looks of it, and the sauces were exquisite. The meats were very solidly done as well for the second course, but the real stars were the pastas and some of the appetizers (grilled shrimp and lamb meatballs were fantastic). Overall, a great place to go in Andersonville, and, after having returned from Italy (Rome and Venice), I know a place where I can have some fantastic Italian food!"

  • "I love this place for the most part. The food is great and the service is good. The back patio is one of my favorites but the noise level inside is loud. I think the space could use some softer touches to absorb some of the noise or it would be nice if there wasn't as much seating, reducing the number of diners and crowd noise."

  • "I returned to Anteprima on a business trip. Anteprima has consistently great food, with rotating specials and a few mainstays. The weeknight prix-fixe menu is an excellent value and I have always enjoyed top-notch service and a wonderful overall experience. My colleagues were equally impressed with their first experience."

  • "I have been to Anteprima a number of times throughout a number of years and the food never disappoints. The specials and the standbys are always delicious."

  • "Great food from a big menu of many dishes (with portion sizes ranging from a couple bites to full entrees) coupled with great service."

  • "This is a wonderful little spot with a cozy patio. Parking can be challenging but I have always found a spot nearby. The food is very good, service 8 out of 10 times was really good. One grumpy waiter I try to avoid. Lamb sausage pasta is spicy and delicious. I can always find something good on the wine list and the carafe pour is an added bonus though the pricing reflects the additional wine. Antipasta changes regularly and it is clearly displayed so take a look and choose what looks good."

  • "I had been wanting to try this restaurant for years and decided to finally book a table last Sunday night. Much to my surprise, they offer a prix fixe menu Sunday-Thursday where you can have any appetizer, a main dish ($5 upcharge for steak) and dessert or appetizer, half pasta portion and main dish for only $29. My husband and I both chose the later and loved everything we tried. And it was an exceptional value. We sat on the back patio and had a lovely time. Can't wait to come back."

  • "We fell in love with this restaurant for its great neighborhood vibe and tasty variety of small plates. Unfortunately, we were disappointed during our latest visit. Service was slow, we found plastic packaging in our calamari, the lamb skewers were skimpy and overdone, and our side of greens was barely enough to feed one. Sadly, we will not return not will we continue to recommend to our friends."

  • "We met from around the city and burbs for a Thursday night dinner, they accomodated our group well, service was attentive but not rushed, food was excellent - Italian without being heavy. Will definitely go back"

  • "We really enjoy Ante Prima. Tasty vegetarian and vegan options and very gluten-free friendly. Carnivores delight as well - tasty pork and fish. And out server was spectacular - patient and willing to offer suggestions on wine. "

  • "We went to Anteprima to support the Dining Out for Life event. The restaurant was full, but our group of four was still able to converse easily. My husband had the salmon, which he said was close to the best he has ever had. Two others at our table had the bison flank steak. They ordered it medium rare, but it still came out a bit dry. Maybe due to the busy nigh??? On Thursday nights they have a prix fixe menu, which is a nice option to try a three course menu at a reasonable price (try the bread pudding, yum). Wines are also reasonable. We will definitely go back on a less busy night."

  • "I was turned away a few years ago from Anteprima because it was so crowded. It is indeed a neighborhood restaurant, however I am not sure it deserves the hype. The food came out of the kitchen so fast I felt it was suspect, perhaps previously assembled ready to reheat. I ordered an antipasti selection that was sad and included inedible asparagus(skin on and army green) as well as undercooked fava beans. I would not return to this restaurant, the wine list was good but really not something special overall."

  • "We went for a dinner after reading reviews about the food at Anteprima. But I was a bit let down by the food. We ordered pasta - it was a bit too oily and full of cheese, with little flavor. We had also ordered a starter before that. For the small portion size, I thought it was way expensive at $8. On the brighter side, the service was nice, and the restaurant itself is located in the beautiful Andersonville neighborhood, very accessible by public transit. Overall I had better Italian food at better prices than Anteprima."

  • "There was a fund raiser at the restaurant and someone came up to us for a donation. It's not that it wasn't a good cause because it was but I thought it was strange. I don't know about everyone else but I am hounded enough between phone calls, people on the corner, people knocking on the door and people I work with who's kids are selling cookies, popcorn, stationary, pizzas... It would have been one thing if I had known in advance but I didn't. I don't want to be put in that position when we are eating in a restaurant with friends. You either feel cheap or you donate and put pressure on your friends to donate. "

  • "Great food, great service, excellent wine pairings and beautiful outdoor patio out back. Our favorite place for dinner in Andersonville - if not the entire north side of Chicago."

  • "First class italian food and a good wine list with lots to choose from by the glass and by the bottle. Casual, relaxing atmosphere with good service for a really enjoyble meal."

  • "One of the best italian restaurants in the city. A hidden gem. The family that owns this restaurant has been doing food right. This is not your typical marinara on pasta restaurant. This restaurant is about flavors and quality and you can tell."

  • "For me it was a fore theater option, recommended by the Raven Theater. I love Italian food. I was expecting your standard pasta, ravioli dishes. To my surprise, everything on the menu was new for me. Had I known what I was ordering was not what I expected; I honestly, probably wouldn't have tried it! But absolutely everything was wonderful. Our waiter was extremely helpful with our wine selection. The staff was mindful of our theater reservation. When necessary they "nudged" us; but we never felt rushed."

  • "We've been going to Ante Prima for several years, once or twice a year, but had not been back for over a year. The experience has not changed much in that time. The food is unique and interesting but there are real winners and dishes that are just so-so. A welcome change was a good waiter but I was not happy when he steered me to a more expensive wine that was not a good a match to what I communicated I wanted. My wife, the picky eater, did not like her grilled endive salad but her pasta dish was fine. I had a good salad, the octopus (my favorite of the night), and the lamb sausage pasta that was also good. My vegetarian son and girlfriend shared a cauliflower dish they said had too much olive taste but enjoyed the shrimp and octopus."

  • "Great food, service and experience. Feels like a neighborhood favorite with a flavor for great Chicago cuisine. Would highly recommend. We were one of few tourist there and the wait staff took us on a tour of the menu offering various recommendations. From the wine to the homemade breadsticks, everything was delicious and reasonably priced. Just note, if you are staying downtown, it's about a 20 min/$20 cab, but worth it to experience this gem."

  • "We love Anteprima! Food is delicious and not what you'll find at other Italian restaurants. Options are great for sharing so you can try lots of options. Beautiful outdoor area in back (if it ever gets warm enough). Definitely one of our favorite Italian--or any--restaurants in Chicago!"

  • "My husband and I took a friend there for dinner. So glad we chose such a terriffic place. Everything delicious. Lobster bisque, argua salad, lamb meatballs, roasetd carrots to begin. Spaghetti, butternut squash ravioli, grilled swordfish followed. Finally a wonderful dessert, and all with a great bottle of wine. The menu is so amazing, what to order from the fantastic choices. We took our time and no one made us feel hurried. Great experience."

  • "Reviews seemed unanimously approving across the board. Things started to go wrong at the outset. The restaurant is a small and for couples. We were a party of five. They pushed two couples' tables together and it was cramped. While the wine menu is robust, the food menu was sparse and left a lot to be desired. What was served was variable in quality. My wife liked her swordfish. I had a whole "porgy" which is really sea bream. It's a bony fish and the waiter worked valiantly to rid it of most of them. But it was simply was not well seasoned or cooked and came out tasteless. This expensive dish was served with six burnt fingerling potato sections. At least my wife got couscous. Waiter was prompt and efficient. Wouldn't go again."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner very much! We were however greeted by a host who was clearly stressed at first and had a bit of an attitude. He later warmed up and seated us as requested. I think their bartenders always shake one of the best martini's ever. I appreciate when the hands on owner is there because he always tries to make sure that everything is perfect about our experience. The food was excellent and although I usually don't eat desert, I thought the deserts were amazing too! Really a treat to go to Anteprima!"
