A word from Anson
Anson is under repair from fire damage sustained on 12.24.13. The restaurant is not serving guests at this time. We hope to resume service to our local guests and visitors alike by late summer 2014. Luckily, there were no injuries during the fire. We’d like to thank the Charleston Fire Department for their quick response and containment of the fire.
We are fortunate to have excellent insurance and an experienced contractor to guide us through this difficult phase. We have received numerous phone calls and emails from locals, visitors, colleagues and vendors. Our staff and owners thank all of you for your loyalty and your efforts to reach us.
We will continue to help guests with future events. At this time, we are comfortable with accepting reservations for early April for regular dinner guests and mid-April for group events. When the timeline changes, we will post our tentative reopen date on this page of our website.

  • "We always try to stop by an Ansons when we travel to Charleston. Great experience, except they were out of Grouper when we were in, it's one of the restaurant specialties. The manager came to us personally and apologized, and suggested the hand cut Swordfish, which was outstanding! Unfortunately the next day (I believe, it was Xmas eve), there was a fire and the restaurant is going to be closed for at least a few months."

  • "Exceptional waiter who knew the menu as well as the wine list and beer list very well. Great meal recommendations. Bone-in ribeye was mouth watering, scallops were huge and cooked just right. Everything went perfectly."

  • "We were visiting the area and Anton was right around the corner from us. There are many amazing places to choose in Charleston, but I am glad we chose this one! Fantastic shrimp and grits, also loved the pork belly. A fantastic experience all around."

  • "Hard to criticize Anson's. Sets a good standard for Charleston. Other places may be more "in," but Anson's is dependably excellent. And always open."

  • "We ate at Anson for my wife's birthday on Thursday, at her request. We have lived in Charleston for nearly thirty years and dine out regularly. Anson remains one of our favorite restaurants in a city that is blessed with a number of excellent dining spots. The food is consistently excellent, the service is exceptional, and the ambience is relaxed enough that having well-behaved children along is fine and elegant enough that it is an ideal place to have a romantic dinner or celebrate a special occasion. It is as good a dining experience as you will find anywhere. And Thursday night was definitely no exception!"

  • "My brand-new wife and I ate here on our honeymoon in Charleston and we both loved it. It was her favorite meal of the trip and I liked mine quite a bit too. I'd noted in our reservation that we were there for our honeymoon, so the restaurant had kindly reserved us a table at the very front, looking out the windows onto the picturesque street in front of us. This was the only part of the evening that I regretted - there was live music that night not too far from our table and a large group table next to us that was loud and almost obnoxious. Had we sat upstairs, it would have been much quieter and even prettier. Be sure to ask for a table upstairs. The food was incredible - pork chop with red-eye gravy for me and a seafood pasta dish for her"

  • "5 out of 10. Lackluster service, over-sauced yet bland food, priced up for fine dining. Go elsewhere, Charleston has much more to offer."

  • "We had excellent service at Anson. The salads were outstanding and the pork belly with corn waffle was delicious. But the mahi mahi and pasta marinara were boring and bland. Our booth was cozy with romantic lighting."

  • "We come to Anson for many of our "special occasion" dinners. We come because we know we'll receive the best service and great food. As usual, this special occasion was no exception. Looking forward to our next opportunity to dine there."

  • "Have dined here several times, food and service have always been outstanding. The fried whole flounder is always a hit along with the chicken. Upstairs seems to be quieter compared to the first floor."

  • "After searching several options in Charleston we picked to go to Anson for Thanksgiving dinner this year. We are not local and used many sources to make our decision. We were dining later in the day and did not want a buffet. Anson had a 3 course fixed price meal with amazing options and many options in each category. They were able to seat us when we arrived which was our reservation time, even though they were busy. The food came quickly and the service was wonderful . . . we did tell her we wanted to enjoy our entree's and would appreciate a little time between them and dessert and the waitress was fine with that. They have a good wine list too. I was happy that they added a kids menu."

  • "Over all I would say everything was almost perfect...lovely charming dining room. While very busy on Thanksgiving, the staff was quick but understood, this was a special dinner and we were not in a hurry to gobble it all down in 30 minutes. The leg of lamb was delicious. The only negative thing I would say is, the Pumpkin Bread Pudding, the very thing that drew us to this restaurant for Thanksgiving, was a bit too dry and more savory then sweet..bit of a disappointment. But the cinnamon ice cream that accompanied to was very good, and helped to moisten it. We would recommend it to friends and family."

  • "We were there for Thanksgiving. We sat upstairs which was lovely and much more appealing than the downstairs room. Our waiter Alex was excellent, friendly and professional. Since it was Thanksgiving I ordered the turkey dinner which was ice cold when it arrived. Alex graciously took it back and brought a hot replacement. However, it was just ok. My husband had their signature dish, a whole fried flounder which was delicious. I don't think they did a great job with Thanksgiving, but I would go back on a regular day"

  • "We went for Thanksgiving Dinner while visiting Charleston. Our server looked really young but he was obviously very well trained and very good. Despite the large groups and Thanksgiving Day crowd these guys were great! My husband opted for the traditional Thanksgiving turkey and all of the trimming while I opted for a seared tuna instead. Both were great. I would come back in an instant. Traditional but not stuffy. Fun location by the straw market as we watched all of the carriage tours go by."

  • "My family enjoyed having dinner at Ansons. As usual it was very good. Turkey was very good."

  • "It's not realistic to give an overall rating for this restaurant inasmuch as we came here with a granddaughter for Thanksgiving dinner. The place was jammed. Our granddaughter's boyfriend is a cook there and she is well known by the staff. With those caveats, we had the traditional turkey dinner with an excellent chardonnay from CA. Everything was done very well, good portions, great taste and excellent service. They had several other options on the menu but we all stuck with the traditional dinner. A group of 15 in the same room, seated about 15 minutes after us were loud (3 tables) with half being teens or slightly older - all on their smart phones. We'll come again for the regular fare. It promises to be very enjoyable."

  • "Anson's is a great place for a special holiday dinner or dinner with friends. We always have excellent food and a great selection. The small room where we had Thanksgiving Dinner was quiet; the service was excellent; and the food is tasty."

  • "We came late to the restaurant, but we were still greeted with a warm hello from the Host/Mgr. We were sat at a wonderful booth with big cushions and a big table (big enough for lots of dishes)! The food was great ; my son ordered 2 orders of potatoes and a steak, my husband ordered the pork chop and collard greens. Both, loved their meals! My husband said he has never had better collard greens...in fact usually I get most of his collards...but this time he ate them and really enjoyed them. My daughter ordered a grilled fish and she was very happy too. It was a delightful meal and the wait staff was very attentive."

  • "From the time we walked in the door, we were treated like family! Our server was fabulous, the wine was delicious and our food was fantastic! Our appetizers were the best we've ever had! Our entrees were "good to the last bite"! Finally, we were so full, but we had to get dessert! The Key Lime Pie & Pecan Pie were better than any we've had anywhere! So, be sure to save room for dessert!"

  • "This is another great Charleston restaurant. Anson has a unique menu and everything from the appetizers, salads to the main course was a taste bud adventure extraordinaire. We'll be back."

  • "The food was very good, portions sufficient, presentation was good, and the service was great. In my opinion, diner spacing is too cramped and the noise levels too high for a restaurant of this caliber. The advertised $30 a plate meal on the website is a bit misleading. A full meal for two people with a couple galsses of wine and desert can easily set you back over $100. My meal for two rang in at $180 including tip. If you have a choice on seating, select the upper level. The swordfish is quite good and my friend enjoyed the pork tenderloin."

  • "Great service, great food - the specials were really creative and the Pork Chop dish was wonderful. Nice atmosphere - upscale but reasonable prices. Nice wine list also."

  • "Visiting Charleston. Better to eat upstairs if want noise level at lower volume. Downstairs louder with bar. Food was very good. Service was OK. Not personable or friendly. Did the minimum to get the job done."

  • "First time to Anson and was not disappointed. Traditional southern food, prepared well. Fried flounder with apricot shallot sauce was very good. Pork chop special was well prepared and tasty. Service was attentive and overall experience was good. Not as high-end as some other local restaurants, but a solid, local experience."

  • "My husband and I had our 30th wedding anniversary and decided to go eat there. I was pleasing surprised to find that it was a sister restaurant to one in Savannah, and also to another that had closed down in Charleston. The flounder is one of their signature dishes, and it was wonderful. My husband got the snapper, and it was a very large portion, but it was delicious. My son and his girlfriend also went, and everyone had fun and enjoyed their meals."

  • "The fish of the day was bland, except for the distinct flavor of fish skin permeating the dish. One of our four diners asked for rare to med. rare steak and got medium. By the time a replacement came, he no longer had any appetite and wound up having to take his $46 steak "to go." Service was inattentive. Food quality was only fair, while price was very high."

  • "Our overall experience was terrific. However, note that if you are vegetarian or allergic to seafood, there are limited options. They are very accommodating, but again.....limited choices. That being said, the food was delicious and the service impeccable."

  • "We had dinner with another couple. The table was ready when we got there. The service was excellent. Our server was very knowledgeable. The food was very good. My wife's duck she said was a little dry. Stick to the menu as the specials are very expensive. We don't go out that often so we did not mind. Over all it was a very enjoyable dining experience."
