1. The space is calm but not pretty. Waitstaff competent and solicitous, but we didn't feel fully welcomed. Ambience is sort of neutral.
2. We considered chef's tasting menu . But weren't told what it would include. We could ask for a la carte items to be included, but we wouldn't know if they would be. So it felt as if we had to choose between known dishes a la carte and unknown dishes on the tasting menu. While I know that the tasting menu is chef's choice and can change all the time, why couldn't we know at the time of ordering what we would be getting so we could make an informed choice. The food is magnificent and is prepared with such creativity. Every bite you take is better than the last. I also love the dining room which is peaceful and intimate. I finally got to NYC 4 years ago and found out the restaurant was closed because of a fire.. I was so disappointed... so when I came back to NYC this timer, I had to get a reservation. Didn't matter if 10:30pm was the earliest available (I just arrived from SF, so that's perfect dinner time for me). Everything about the experience was wonderful! Being from California (where foie gras is banned), I had to order everything with foie gras in it.. I had the foie gras soup dumplings and the Duck with Foie Gras entree.. it was Delicious.. the wine pairing suggested by the waiter was spot on! The menu sounds simple but the flavor and quality of each bite is amazing. We had the 5 course tasting menu and totally loved it....and I mean every bite. You can tell the chef took great care into making sure the fish was cooked just right and the ribeye pork was done perfectly. We really enjoyed every detail of her craft. The restaurant itself is very modest which we like and doesn't feel stuffy like other highly rated restaurants. Service is amazing; very prompt , friendly and courteous. For my friend and me, it was a perfect venue to catch up. The food is extraordinary. I had the sashimi--the trout roe and yuzu pearls with the silken fish--out of this world. My friend had a wonderful pea soup. I ordered the chicken and my friend ordered the duck and we sampled each others' dishes. The chicken was just wonderful and the truffled sauce was to die for. Her duck was beautifully cooked in three preparations. We can recommend these entrees heartily. We finished up with the poppy seed bread pudding--a dessert that avoids too much sweetness with a lovely crispy outside. The wine by the glass list has lovely selections at a reasonable price. Pecan beignets were almost fun and delicious. Only thing to know is that the bourbon ice milk is heavy on the alcohol. I had what was probably the best lamb I can remember having-- perfectly cooked and seasoned loin with amazing flavor and texture. All of our dishes were nicely thought-out and well executed. The waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive, and happily provided detailed explanations of the many dishes that came our way. To sample the widest variety of dishes from the imaginative menu, we opted for the 7 course tasting menu, which is different for every table. There is also a 5 course menu, but believe me, you’ll wish you went with the 7.

Food was fantastic, the restaurant ambience was great. Despite the smaller portions, it was still a very good experience. The only 2 things that I thought could have been better were: 1) The dining area seems temperature seems to be a little bit warmer than it needs to be; 2) The tasting menu took the entire night for us to finish, mostly because it took quite a while in between courses and we ended up sitting there and waiting and more waiting. But besides that, the entire experience was fantastic, one of the most memorable dining experience I have had.
