A word from Annie Gunn's
Since 1937, once nestled in the middle of cornfields stands the Smokehouse Market. An unpretentious structure, reminiscent of its days as the market for the surrounding Chesterfield area. The store now houses one of St. Louis's most celebrated restaurants, Annie Gunn's. Within its walls, Chef Lou Rook, III works his magic, creating irresistible cuisine with a sophisticated country life accent. In keeping with the concept of "Foods and wines inspired by the richness of country life", Chef Rook uses the best ingredients and the traditions that are most appropriate to them and imbues them with his own talented creative spin within the rhythm of the seasons. Annie Gunn's boasts an award-winning wine list as well.

Diner Reviews
  • "Annie Gunn's never disappoints! For the first time we were not able to have a private booth. There was some concern on the noise level in the open room but all was great."

  • "Made reservations for my wife's birthday. Made a birthday cake request on Open Table and when the restaurant called to confirm the reservation, they confirmed that they would bring an apple pie with candle. Perfect. Once seated we ordered cocktails and I ordered a bottle of wine to be served with our meal. Meals come, looks great, but no wine. Waiter then blows by with one glass of the wine I ordered and before I could stop him he was gone. Snagged a passing waiter to get our guy back. By this time we are half way through our steaks! He shows up, I tell him the problem. He is appropriately apologetic and offers to make it right. Then he offers us the dessert menu! Instead of making a scene we ordered something to share. Blew the evening."

  • "I took my mother in law here for her birthday. It was great! I had the French dip sandwich and she had the ribeye sandwich special. I haven't been to Annies in a while and it is definitely worth coming back to more often. Lunch was comparable in price to a nice lunch at Cardwells but the food tasting much better. We then went to the smokehouse shop next door and picked up a few goodies as well. I'm also planning on trying the carryout sandwiches at the smokehouse shop. They looked great as well and priced in the $6 to $8 range."

  • "Never disappoints. Outstanding food and service, especially with our large party of 11. Worth every penny!"

  • "My wife and I both had the 6oz filet. The steaks were great - perfectly cooked. The sides were mashed potatoes and vegetables ( asparagus and butternut squash). The wine list is huge with something for everyone. However, our table was in a zone with a significant cold draft! For the first 20 minutes the draft came and went like the ac was turning on and off. After that, it stopped. We didn't get a good explanation from staff so I cannot say where this is a recurring problem or not."

  • "Our group was extremely happy with our meals and our service. Two baked chickens were ordered and two filets. The server was exceptionally attentive and entertaining as well. The evening was topped off with an amazing bread pudding. We were seated in a snug and enjoyed the privacy but it seemed to capture a lot of heat as one of our guests needed the door opened often. Definitely plan to go back to Annie Gunn's!"

  • "This is the best restaurant in the St Louis Area. Great service, amazing food, menu has changes but the wisdom to keep everyone's favorites."

  • "If you are seeking quality food and a nice atmosphere for dining Annie Gunn's is the place for you. Creative and tasty choices to include appetizers and entrees, I have traveled and visited many establishments in various states and no one has excelled Annie Gunn's. I recommend the potato cakes with smoked bacon and barbeque shrimp as appetizers. Entrees you can't go wrong with their stake; tastes like butter! However, if you are seeking non beef; try their lamp chops, to die for or the roasted chicken; both are packed with flavor."

  • "I was there St. Patrick's Day, 2014. I think it was especially noisy because everyone was truly having a lot of fun. Myself included. I had a great meal which were specials specifically for this day. The chef had some great imaginative dishes. I truly enjoyed my evening at Annie Gunns. I think everyone will say the same thing. I definitely recommend."

  • "Annie Gunn's is always our first choice for special occasions and it did not disappoint. The food was just spectacular and we were fortunate enough to be able to dine in one of the private little rooms which adds alot to the "special" part of the evening. We have yet to discover anything on the menu that we wouldn't recommend highly.....it's always such a pleasure."

  • "The menu is fresh and well put together. The opening Moscat is a treat, as is the wine list - chock full of solid middle priced wine finds put together by their excellent Sommelier, John all the way up to rare classified growths for any occasion. I love that I can get a wonderful mid-priced bottle without sacrificing a quality experience. The service is outstanding. Book early, though, because this place is full all of the time. The main dining area is a bit loud, but nothing that interferes with a good meal. Their selection of fresh game gives the menu a unique feel - and their steak and chop selections are always first rate."

  • "This was my first time dining at Annie Gunn's. I had heard great things, and saw many great reviews. Unfortunately, I did not have the same experience as the other reviewers of the restaurant. The atmosphere was a bit drab, the porch/indoor seating area was loud from the traffic on the highway, the patrons were loud, the portions on the plate were small. I expected much more and I came away felling that I wanted my money back. His steak came out extra rare in the middle, when it was to be medium. I was done with my meal by the time they recooked his, my food was getting cold waiting. On a good note, the wine list is amazing and the service was great. I'm not sure that I would recommend or revisit especially for the price."

  • "We had a lovely dinner. I hadn't been to Annie Gunn's in years. I have been missing out.The food was delightful and the atmosphere was energetic. Tables were a little close together, everyone was friendly. I think my filet was one of the best I have ever had..........we will be back...."

  • "Although our food was good, it was not worthy of the prices charged. I ordered a 6 ounce fillet mignon and found it to be chewy and with very little flavor and I ordered it medium rare. My husband had the Tuna special served rare with a chutney. They chutney was over extremely sweet and overpowered the tuna. Our dinner was well over $200.00 for two meals and an minimally priced bottle of wine. No dessert. Although this was a disappointment meal, we will give it another try. I really want to believe that the kitchen was having an off night and that it will be back to quality food on our next visit."

  • "Our work group decided to have dinner at Annie Gunns and it was an excellent choice, as expected. The maple glazed shrimp appetizer is incredible. Lamb chops were the best I ever had. Those that were in the group that had steaks were also raving fans after this experience. You can't go wrong with Annie Gunns for impeccable service and outstanding food!"

  • "I was in Chesterfield for Business travel, meeting a few colleagues from the east coast and one from the UK. We wanted the UK colleague to get a good american steak, since you can't get a good steak in Europe. I found this place on Yelp and was blown away by the quality, breadth of menu and taste. I highly recommend this place."

  • "We have unfortunately few occasions to go to Annie Gunns, mainly because of the expense, but any time a very special occasion requires a very special dinner, this is one of the few choices on our list. The food is spectacular and the service wonderful. Of special note was the meat (of course) but the dessert was also pretty special. I would never have thought to put coconut in a creme brulee but it really works. There are always far too many great choices. Every time I come here I tell myself that I will try one of the specials, but eventually just get the wonderful steak. I wish that I could afford to eat here every week, but if I did I would get too big to walk through the door."

  • "We brought our Manhattan relatives and they said it was one of the best places they have ever eaten at. The service was amazing, with George as a charming, smart server and the manager checking in 3 times. The food was extraordinary, including the deserts made by the new pastry chef. Ambiance is classy but warm and charming and we went next store to the a Smokehouse to take a gander at the array of superb foods and wines. This was an extraordinary experience!"

  • "This is one of my favorites. I had requested a quiet booth - and to my surprise, they had one waiting for me during a very busy lunch hour. The place was packed! The food (bass & a burger for my companion) was excellent. The service was unhurried, yet attentive. The only minor inconvenience was lack of ample parking. I had to drive around a couple of times to find a spot. Would highly recommend this gem."

  • "Excellent spot, and they've always been able to accommodate requests for a quiet spot which most only give lip service too. Only issue was our maybe fresh from the east coast/NYC waitress that checked every 5-10 minutes to see if we were were ready to order, if we liked the food, if we were done or needed anything else, etc. She seemed to seasoned to not know better. As this meeting was with a noted author it was a bit more annoying than normal as writers tend to have a flow to them and a constant break in the flow was to the point I was about to pull the door shut and wedge it that way."

  • "Enjoyed a great dinner. Had a fish special and it was fabulous. Our server knew it was our anniversary and gave us a delicious dessert on the house. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "You have to try Chef Lou's Ultimate burger, the bacon chutney is the perfect combo of sweet and salty. I like mine rare and this restaurant is one of the places I trust to serve a safe rare burger. The fries that come with it are amazing, just the right crunch and softness, the seasoning on the fries takes them over the top. Don't leave without trying the apple pie, it is amazing with the cinnamon ice cream, plan for it, so don't eat your whole meal so you have room."
