  • "has gone downhill for the past two years. The only thing left that's have way decent on the limited menu are the mussles."

  • " We went with friends. Hadn't been in a year. Restaurant expanded, which was needed. Food is very good but Entre portion was much too small and expensive. I was surprised since this was not the case last time we were there. Will think twice before returning."

  • "I had friends comming to visit, they had heard about Anneke Jans, "they are Dutch" so I was excited to make a reservation. When our main dish arrived I was a little embarrassed when they lean over and said " I hope you are not hungry tonight". I had got the Cod duo, the pieces were so small I could have fit them on a teaspoon! Not the best meal I've ever over paid for. Even though the name apears to be Dutch...nothing else is."

  • "Tried the avocado gazpacho. It was absolutely delicious. Creamy, cold and yum. What could be exciting about chicken? Well, it's always done to perfection, and when I find good chicken, I order it! Mussels are always outstanding, as was the sirloin. There was nothing left on my husband's plate. Wait staff is always ON, and our waittress was delightful and knowledgeable. Anneke Jans offers the best ambience in the Portsmouth/Kittery area…..and it's open on Sunday night!!!!"

  • "Wish this could stay hidden in downtown Kittery forever but then they might go out of business so I better promote them. Amazing dinner in a very attractive space. Honestly do not have a complaint. Some of the best mussels and frites I have had, excellent cheese board, entrees slightly small but super tasty. Must try!"

  • "We had such a lovely evening at Anneke Jans. The service was friendly but professional. The food was superb and the atmosphere was lovely without being pretentious, which was impressive because the quality of the food is on par with the finest restaurants in major urban areas."

  • "We had a lovely meal with a very good wine. Mussels were wonderful. Steaks and pork delicious. A hard working new chef knows what he is doing and produces very good food. Very quiet the night we were there as adapting to a new chef can take time. Not cheap but well worth a trip."

  • "Loved the menu and wine selection. Enjoyable evening with great food. We chose to dine earlier to avoid crowd and noise, but at 6 p.m. on a Friday night it was still a little noisy."

  • "A casual brunch - non pretentious and non boring menu! I will keep in mind for future Sunday's throughout the summer. "

  • "The food is always outstanding. The service is fun and attentive. Ken is one of my favorite waiters EVER. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Consistently my favorite place to dine-out in Kittery. The mussels are simply the best. The wine list is more than adequate, and the selection of appetizers and entrees has both variety and quality. The service is second to none; friendly and attentive. This restaurant has my highest recommendation."

  • "This was our second visit and the food was really just as amazing! We waited a long time to get a drink at the bar, even though we had seats and were clearly waiting to order, but other than that, the service was great. Timing was also perfect for dinner! "

  • "A very stylish restaurant on Wellingford Square in Kittery Maine. The locale is charming, the food is imaginative and pitch perfect service. My wife had steak tartare, tomato soup, and mussels--all excellent. I had a pork terrine, which was a bit flat (under-seasoned), an updated Caesar salad and roast chicken with potato gallettes--both excellent. BTW, the bread is divine and the butter arrives soft and spreadable. We had excellent cocktails and had no room for dessert. It's a nice destination restaurant for anyone in coastal New Hampshire or southern Maine. The only downside is parking, which is scant. "

  • " The food was absolutely wonderful, cooked perfectly, and presented beautifully. The service was top notch, and the atmosphere was perfect. I especially loved the fried olives, they were sooo good! I will certainly be going back soon!"
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "We actually chose the restaurant by location rather than reputation (it is halfway between two cities of residence) so we were amazed at how good the food was. Between the four of us, we had nine different dishes and each one was outstanding. The food is interesting and carefully prepared (brilliantly so with the seafood, where the margin of error is especially small) and the meal was served at an appropriate pace, aside from the first courses arriving well before we had finished our cocktails. The wine list could use some work -- it is tends to be expensive and a bit narrowly focused, and the wines by the glass were especially uninteresting."

  • "Anneke Jan's is a gem. The expanded design is beautifully done and the food and service has never been better. if you are going to the Portsmouth area it's a not to miss restaurant. Jason and his staff make everyone feel welcome and appreciated."

  • "This is the first time we have been there since they brought in a new chef. Really nothing special on his menu. We'll be back when the next chef arrives."

  • "At the end of a week of dining out all over Maine we chose Anneke Jans as the last place. The service was excellent and the food superb. We shared the fried olives and cheddar cheese soufflé then I had the pork on cheesy grits. We ended with exploration of caramel - fun and different. "

  • "We ate on a Monday. Surprisingly the restaurant was empty. They had just finished restaurant week. We have usually come where all tables were full. It was a fun experience to have the entire staff to ourselves. It remains one of our favorite spots. The ambiance is just perfect."

  • "Restaurant week is always a good time to try a new restaurant and grab a bite from each of the course options. I'm happy that the entree portion wasn't oversized but I still left full. Caesar salad and our dessert, blueberry ice cream sandwich with oatmeal cookies and lemon curd was very flavorful."

  • "My husband had heard about it from a friend so we tried it for his birthday It wasn't up to the friends report but food was good , staff very nice. It was just quite loud and I felt hurried We may try again when it isn't Restaurant week"

  • "The four of us had 3 different appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 desserts. We finished every bite of them all Hope to return often, though it is 45 minutes away for us in MA."

  • "In a group of 4, three people ordered salmon & found it to be excellent. The fourth ordered the chicken confit and found it to be tasteless. The ambience was simple and tasteful, the noise level distracting, the tables too close together. The service was just right, attentive without being annoying. I choose food over ambience any day so I'll return."

  • "Every time we want an outstanding dining experience we head to Anneke Jans. This trip was in response to Portsmouth Restaurant Week and a chance to try a couple of the special meals the restaurant was offering. For appetizers; I had the creamy Spring Onion Soup and my wife had Hearts of Romaine Salad, both were an excellant start to a fine meal. For entrees we enjoyed the Red Wine Marinated Flank Steak and the Chicken Confit, both had outstanding flavor and tasty sides. The desserts were off the chart. I had the Chocolate and Cherries which is a rich chocolate cake with glazed cherrieson top and a scoop of gelato. My wife had the Grilled Pound Cake with Bananas Foster on top, Wow. Don't miss this, if you want an excellant dining experience."

  • "The food and presentation were excellent and so was the service. While the ambiance is friendly the noise level and accoustics were too loud to be able to carry a conversation comfotably. On the whole a very pleasant experience."

  • "What a great little gem in Kittery, ME. We were meeting very old friends for dinner who had become newly engaged. We wanted to celebrate with a nice meal and wine list and we were happily rewarded. Scheduled for a Friday night and we were able to be seated early. The menu is fresh and creative. Started with a Pollock Ceviche and went onto a fried quail with corn pudding. We topped of the night with the exploration of caramel, an arrangement of 4 ways to enjoy caramel. Very creative with caramel brulee, a shake, crisp cookie drizzled in caramel and homemade caramel chew. The venue is charming and modern, the staff is very courteous and the ambiance was just right for the occasion."

  • "From the moment you walk in the door the staff lets you know how glad they are you came. The staff are friendly, attentive and helpful. The menu was varied and unique. The pork dish was incredible withI so many great tastes. The trout was fresh, nice flavor but not as interesting. And how refreshing to get a perfect cappacino after a wonderful meal. An excellent experience and looking forward to another taste of the menu."

  • "Staff were very nice, food was mostly good (not great), but the biggest concern was noise level. We happened to sit on the bar side which in retrospect was a big mistake. The noise level rose to that of "Saturday night at the local bar," as opposed to "the bar area of a nice restaurant." It made conversation at our table kind of 'shouty.' It was a struggle to hear and be heard. As we were leaving, it seemed the proper dining area was not a whole lot quieter. OK if you like that sort of thing. Me, not so much."

  • "Consistently great place for elegant and delicious dining--nicely sized portions and interesting selections. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Quiet, soft-light atmosphere with lovely big windows to view the surroundings! We never miss an opportunity to stop here when traveling from Maine south or from points south back home! Hope we can try out the new Sunday brunch in the coming months!"

  • "Pro: Everything was tasty and well seasoned for the most part. Mussels were delicious, oysters top notch! Pheasant and Sirloin entrees and sides were succulent, seasoned superbly. Dessert of Meyer lemon cheesecake with blueberry compote and coffee excellent! Con: The garden salad was so-so: leaf lettuce, shaved carrot and sunflower seeds in a bland buttermilk dressing which was over salted (I am not salt-averse). Bread was crusty but oddly seemed very cool - less than room temperature. The room temperature was a problem. It was too cold in the dining room. We asked to bump up the temperature a bit, were told "of course!" and felt little improvement; wore my coat. Perhaps the draft from the door is the reason? Chairs are not comfortable."

  • "Our entire experience was terrific. We were a group of four and had three different entrees...all four of which were outstanding. The only suggestion I would make to first time diners is to arrive early, as sometimes it is difficult to find a place to park at this wonderful out of the way establishment."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Get back there! There is a new chef, and the food is terrific. They've kept the mussels :). Lots of creativity, but not too much to overkill the food. Best chicken around in my humble opinion."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "not as good as it use to be. The last chef was better. The salad are not the quality I would expect for a high end restaurant."

  • "We fought the bad weather to get to Anneke Jan's and it was so worth it! Our waiter, Ken, was so welcoming, warm and funny. Our food (two ducks and one hake) was absolutely wonderful and the bread pudding for dessert was the best I have ever had. Even the chef, Lee, came out to chat with us for awhile. If you have not been here before, don't miss it. It has the atmosphere of a neighborhood bistro with remarkable dishes and professional service."
