Diner Reviews
  • "... it's about the convenience. Come here for lunch or for a pre-theater burger or salad (not much else worth ordering). The staff is extremely friendly and efficient and it's a great location. But if you're a foodie -- go somewhere else. "

  • "Went to Angus Cafe for pre-theatre dinner....the service was very good to excellent but food was disappointing -it was tasty but very small portions...so you think you're getting a nicely priced meal, it turns out there isn't that much to eat....had to have dessert as we were still quite hungry after the entrees....desserts were very good! • "Went to Angus' before a Friday night show, and we were totally happy with the experience. We were seated right away, had a great view of the neighboring theater, and our waiter was friendly and so helpful! With 3 kids in tow, we couldn't have asked for better. "

  • "This was our go-to place for burgers prior to shows. So on this last visit the burgers were smaller, the bun stale and the vibe of the place was off. We'll think twice before going again. a bit of a disapointment for a regular."

  • "We went to the city to see a Broadway Show - Angus Bistro was close to all the Broadway activity...it was easy to get to, and the food was very tasty. We would def go back again!"

  • "Having enjoyed Cafe Angus in the past we dined there last week. The food was poor from appetizer/salads to dessert. The waiter held an Ipad to take our order creating no personal interaction. We will not go back and would not recommend it."

  • "This restaurant is located right in the middle of the theater district and convenient to public transportation. The staff was welcoming and attentive, and the food was very good with a selection to please eveyone. It's a great spot for a nice meal before theater, and they are sensitive to getting you out on time. I would definitely go back."

  • "I was at the theatre and wanted a salad with fish for dinner. The atmosphere was a cute French bistro. I thought I was going to love this place. Reasonable prices. Great location in the center of theatre district. Really pleasant servers I ordered the salmon a little rare. My daughter ordered the salmon cooked regular My husband ordered short ribs. My husbands short ribs were very heavy and not very good. The turkey burger seemed ok. My salmon came back cooked rare just like I like it but smelled extremely fishy. I know when it us not fresh. I asked them to cook more which they did.I got my dinner when everyone was finished. Clearly a thawed fish that was either old or frozen too many time Vegetables were bland"

  • "We went for the location next to Bullets Over Broadway. The noise level was very high. Ordered the Deluxe House Specialty Porterhouse Steak for two. The salads were perfect. Then came the steak. We ordered it Med-rare. I came out well done!! Sent it back. Told the waiter and the manager who came by, to make sure it was med-rare and not medium raw!!! Well, it came back practically raw. The inside was still refrigerator cold. Since time was running close to show time,I had it wrapped and took home for dinner. After cooking it to med-rare for dinner last nite, more disappointment when I tasted the much over salted steak, almost inedible. Service was excellent. After problems, dessert was comped/"

  • "First, the positivies - we had a 6 pm reservation, but realized at the last minute that our curtain was at 7 pm, not 8 pm. Nonetheless, we were seated immediately, our order taken quickly and our food arrived promptly so that we could get to curtain on time. The waiter suggested the Prix Fixe which is intended to get you out quickly. They also have a kids' menu. Unfortunately, our food was pretty disappointing. The steak frite was a very thin slice of meat and the fries weren't crispy. The mussels were uninspiring (I had the white sauce, perhaps I should have tried the red). The only thing we really enjoyed was the scotch egg."

  • "Centrally located and convenient to theaters. we were stuck in Tunnel traffic and were delayed for our reservation and they graciously accommodated us. Very nice fixed selection ( small portion)made our limited pre theater time workable. Outstanding short ribs!"

  • "My friend and I were disappointed by the food portions and lack of good service during this visit. In the past, Angus has been my go-to pre-theatre dining venue, but my last 2 recent experiences here have been less than stellar. The portions were small and good quality wise, but uninteresting. The waitstaff seemed harried. When my friend complained that she hadn't been told of the daily specials (and that had he known, she old have made a different choice.). The restaurant comped her for the pasta she had. I thought this gesture on their part was very decent, and we both appreciated it. Based solely upon our last 2 recent Angus experiences, we do not plan to return anytime soon, and I will not e recommending it to y friends."

  • "I was surprised at how this restaurant could receive any good reviews. we ordered a salad with grilled chicken and the buttermilk chicken dish. The meat was tough and tasteless in both dishes. They failed to supply the dressing for the salad and for a side salad there was no dressing. We give it a fair only because the fries were good and the waiters very nice, if inexperienced. In terms of atmosphere, there didn't seem any and it could use some cleaning and redecorating."

  • "Went to Angus' following a show. Was early for our reservation but they seated us right away - even offered to hang up our wet coats as it was down pouring that day. Service was excellent - even the wait staff in training was great. Food was very good and prepared to our liking. Atmosphere was lovely and although tables were too close for my liking, the staff handled it well which made it not too bothersome. A great experience!"

  • "Was seated immediately and service was prompt. Told waiter we had an 8:00 show and he assured us we had plenty of time. We had a relaxed and tasty dinner. Buttermilk chicken was moist and delicious. Portions are not over abundant, but ample enough."

  • "Grandma, mom and grandaughter equally pleased with the cozy, friendly atmosphere, and quick service. Delicious burger and fries, kid sized burger for our little one and a Shirley Temple. The waiter was so nice, our res ervation was waiting for us. The meal portions were adequate, wine was good and ended with an exceptional espresso. We weren't rushed out and had time to relax and talk after our matinee show. I would wrongly recommend for small groups."

  • "Perfect location for us to celebrate Mom's 87th B-Day B-4 a show at the St James Theater. The food was very good with excellent service! There are 3 levels of dining areas. We chose the main...walk-in level...no stairs. Also, no stairs to get to the rest rooms, which are located on the main floor dining room level. I am happy to recco this comfortable, nice place to others./JR"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our brunch - we were half an hour late for our reservation but called to let them know and they held a table for us (even though it was PACKED). We were there for a pre-theater brunch (had a 2pm curtain) and they accommodated our late arrival by bringing everything out as quickly as possible (but not making us feel rushed). I have to note that I DID have to send back the mussels, they were far too chewy and a little "fishy" for my taste, but everything else was FANTASTIC. I ordered the conch chowder instead (knowing we were pressed for time) and it was DELICIOUS. We split the Scotch Eggs (very tasty) and my husband had the sausage platter and it was *Excellent*. The desserts were absolutely excellent too!"

  • "Have been to Angus about 15 times over the years. Note it is no longer McIndoe but Bistro. Menu same. Buttermilk chicken a favorite but just not as good as before. Fatty skin and shrunken bird. Potatoes ok. Service rushed. Great location which is why I chose it. Best part was the brownie dessert. Get your bill soon or you will wait - waiter had too many tables. I had learned that before!"

  • "Nice selection of dishes in a wide price range. Friendly neighborhood bar ambience in the Broadway theatre district. Very friendly and comfortable service. Room to move, and quiet enough to converse (both rarities in this neighborhood)."

  • "Total 180 degree difference since my last time there. Fair food (salmon -- not bad, but not tasty either) and a fair service rating mainly for the bus boys who were extremely helpful and attentive. I will be finding an alternative pre-theater restaurant in the future."

  • "The food was average. We had four different people serve us and before taking our orders, no one had asked if we would like a drink while we looked over the menu."

  • "I had a steak garlic mashed potatoes and the mixed green salad. The only thing that was real good was the steak. The garlic mashed potatoes didn't have any sense or garlic in it at all and the mixed green salad was just want is was but no flavor at all just greens. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody. I should have went to sardis or something before.the play started .not this restaurant."

  • "We always went here when in NYC - the food was good, the staff friendly, and the most convenient for before and after theater. But the food was not good - felt touristy. A twice-baked potato was nothing more than a twice-baked potato - we asked for sour crean and butter. A pricey steak was meager and dry, the house wine was to be expected and even the french fries felt too pre-cooked. A salmon dinner was pretty good with a nice ratatouille and tapenade. Desserts were fine. Perhaps burgers or sandwiches are still as good."

  • "We had Sunday brunch and the food was just fair--nothing great and I wouldn't return. Sorry! Staff was friendly however, and service prompt. Creme Brulle was good."

  • "We stopped by after a show. The restaurant was empty save for one table and two people at the bar. The food was affordable and okay. The place was dead despite it being a busy Saturday night. With all the choices in the Theater District I wish I could have made this one over. Nothing horrible to complain about, but not a single thing to say that reached good."

  • "Meeting friends for a pre-theatre dinner and made 4:30 reservations to allow plenty of time for a few drinks & appetizers and then dinner. We were rushed from the get-go, yet waited almost an hour for our check...food was bland (broccoli/potato soup lacked taste, the chicken pot pie was bland, fish & chips were good but small portion. Even the creme brulee dessert lacked lustre...a soggy shell covering is not the way it should be served! Disappointing..."

  • "Came in at 5:15 for a 7:30 curtain on a Monday. Restaurant was empty, so therefore quiet. One couple came in and they sat them right next to us, didn't understand that. Service was good and the food was good. I had the sausages and my wife had the salmon. Portions were average. Didn't like having the small salad in a cup though. Convenient for the theatre district. Will try again for an 8:00 curtain on a different night to get a better perspective."

  • "I went to this place before a show and it was wonderful. The food was really good! My friend and I got the porterhouse for two and we were both stuffed. The portion was more than enough and the price was very reasonable. I thought the seating was a little tight, but I hadn't seen the upstairs part of the restaurant so there might have been more leg room up there. However, I've been to a lot of restaurants in time square and I don't think tight seating like this is out of the ordinary around there. Maybe not a place for a romantic dining experience. Overall It was a great little place. I would recommend it to friends and I would definitely dine there again. :)"

  • "Angus is directly across from the Majestic Theatre in NYC where Phantom is playing. Neighborhood gem great before or after theatre and lunch. Standard, safe and good food. Porterhouse Steak for two is a great deal if you like steak."
