A word from Angus' Cafe Bistro
Angus' Cafe Bistro is a one hundred-sixty seat, full-service eatery located in the heart of New York City's bustling Times Square. Given its proximity to several Broadway theaters, the pre-show dinner seating is the restaurant's busiest, but before or after is the time to take advantage of the restaurant's charm for either a relaxing lunch or dinner without the pressure of an impending curtain. Additionally, the restaurant offers several attractive features including a bargain prix fixe lunch menu, an irresistible late night snack menu and the house specialty: a porterhouse steak for two which includes unlimited wine by the glass if you order it after 8pm. Brunch is served all weekend long and private parties/special events of all shapes and sizes are willingly and expertly accommodated.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Unless you eat hamburgers, this is a limited and expensive menu. The reason to go is that it's one of the better theatre-district restaurants. The best time to go here is after the theatre or at lunch time (not on matinee days) when you are not so close to the next table that you must participate in their conversation. I've eaten here twice in the past week and the first time the waiter actually made a face when we said we'd have only 'tap water to start'. ugh"

  • "Excellent focus on getting you finished in time to get to a show. They even gave a 3 course that is half portions and comes all at once. Vegan and vegetarian options were a huge plus!"

  • "not impressed. burgers were thin patties.... steak was a thin piece. gave us our bill and omitted subtracting the coupon we had. waiter was scattered... food was eh. I wouldn't return"

  • "Used to love this place. They now allow diners to enter and exit through a window/door; there was a parade of people past our table, including a large stroller, switched tables but should have left. The service was AWFUL. Begged for bread and water, told there were no bottles of chard, they found one after about 15 minutes, had to wait for ice bucket, had to flag down server for more water, check, computers broke, got the wrong check, the place was chaotic. The busboys seem to be doing most of the work."

  • "Just right for moderately priced pre-theater dining!"

  • "We would have preferred the dining room, but were seated in the bar area because there was no air conditioning and the bar area windows were open. This on a 85 degree day! The food was OK, as was the service, but I ordered the fixed price dinner and all 3 courses came on a single plate and the portions were miniscule. The food tasted fine, but the whole experience was a little disappointing."

  • "The menu was different from their online website! We had gone there for specific items, being on a medical diet. It was a very limited menu. The food was not good. Service was acceptable, but just that."

  • "We went to this restaurant after reading good reviews for places to eat before the theater. It was a great location. However, the food was average and extraordinarily expensive. It is New York, but one thing that shocked me was the cost of lemonade. Ten dollars for a small glass and a refill. Refills are not free on soda either. Our dessert was tasty and in comparison, moderately priced."

  • "We really enjoyed Angus the past few times we have visited. The ambiance was more ritzy and the menu choices were expanded. This time the menu was much more limited with only one choice for a vegetarian meal (had to ask to withhold the meat to a pasta dish) and it was more of a pub/sports bar feel than a fancy restaurant. A little disappointed."

  • "Great place to get you in and out in time for your show. Food and Service was good including the selection of both Food and Spirits. Moderately priced for the type of food being offered."

  • "Nothing special--you are paying for location. The food is a step above Stouffer's frozen food."

  • "Little gem with consistently delicious food and attentive, warm service! Portions are not huge - but really not too small either, perfect for pre-theatre, and every bite is delicious! We had shrimp cocktail - succulent and fresh; short ribs - fall off the bone perfect; chicken pot pie - tender, creamy, tasty and crispy. Desserts were yummy too!"

  • "small portions of mediocre high priced a la carte food, indifferent waiters, only moderately clean and insufficiently air-conditioned. bus boys were the highlight. only positive is its location near theaters."

  • "Angus was always our "go to place" for a pre theater dinner so we were disappointed on our recent visit to find average food, dirty restrooms and a staff who seemed distracted . Too bad."

  • "nice menu - nice place many floors = elevator poorly marked and door to second floor dining needed to be unlocked. Very poor notice to guests that joined us knowing where the dining room was."

  • "Food was mediocre at best. Made reservations because it was close to theatre & they had a pre theatre price fixe. The waiter told us the portions were very small & everything came out on one plate. We opted to order from regular menu. Portions were very small & food mediocre at best. Expensive for sub par food. You are paying for location only. Would not recommend."

  • "The tables and arms of the chairs were uncomfortably sticky, I'm sure they haven't been cleaned in a long, long time. The room was hot - time to turn on some fans (doors were all opened). The food was OK, not excellent, not good. I mentioned to my waiter that 8 of my mussels remained tightly closed, he repeated the statement and walked away - not to be seen again until the check came. The service was worse than horrible. Now it's been several years since I've been to Angus (it wasn't called Angus Cafe Bistro) but I returned based on the fact that I remembered it as a really good theater area restaurant - - - times have changed, as has the restaurant. This visit was a total disappointment."

  • "Angus' Café Bistro offers a great pre theater meal in the heart of the theater district. The food came out quickly so I did not have to worry about arriving late to the show. The cod fish was moist and tasted fresh. I look forward to eating there again. "

  • "Hadn't been in awhile to this wonderful respite in the middle of theater district. The ambiance, and service did not disappoint, but honestly the food quality and portions have dropped since last we were there. Still good, but not in anyway exceptional. The terrific staff however make this a place worth coming back to over and over again."

  • "The food comes out quick- in minutes really, but that's the only positive thing I have to say. If you think about it, roasted chicken and even fish and hips should take a little more than 5 minutes to prepare if it is fresh! The fish and chips was rubbery and the buttermilk chicken was dry with no sauce or gravy as the menu indicated. I asked to sub out the fries as I cannot eat potatoes. The server offered fries or baked potato. My salad was $5 extra which is fine, except when it came it was a handful of plain lettuce. And my chicken was alone on a plate with grease around it. This was the worst dining experience I have ever had. You are better off at a diner or fast food restaurant- please do not eat here, there are many better choices. "

  • "Good location in the middle of the Theatre District. Not too crowded on a Wednesday night. Attractive space and we had a great waiter. Food is fine - nothing special and at prices you'd expect given that its real estate is its real selling point."

  • "Located on one of Broadway theaters' busiest streets, Angus Café Bistro is the perfect spot for a pre-theater meal. The hamburgers are juicy and tasty, and the fried fish is always moist and well-seasoned. There are items on the menu appropriate for any meal all day, and service is quick and pleasant."

  • "It is in a prime location for anyone seeing a broadway show or comig from Times Square. They have preshow dinner that is cheap and delicious. The service was so quick! Great place!"

  • "I really like Angus as it is an easy place to grab a bite before a show. Their small plate for $19 is perfect for a pre-show meal when you are planning dessert after, but it would be a bit nicer if the staff didn't seem to be so overtaxed. The extra bar on the third floor is a great addition for anyone who wants to take over the space for a party. This is why I put in great for groups. All in all, a decent meal in mid-town for before or after the show. Looking forward to trying for lunch to grab a Le Superior burger and some night getting to have a charcuterie plate pre-theatre."

  • "Good American bistro food, with the flexibility of all-day breakfast. The menu selections are a bit limited, but daily specials offer additional options. Good for a pre-theatre dinner."

  • "Took my mother to lunch at Angus Cafe Bistro before a Wednesday matinee. People at several tables around us were also going to matinees and we shares reviews if shows. The food was delicious and the location in the heart of the theater district was perfect."

  • "Had a nice post-matinee supper at Angus' on Mother's Day. The salads were ample and fresh; the mussels with cream, peas and bacon were tasty; the desserts were excellent - sticky toffee bread pudding and a fruit crumble; and the white house wine was fine. The service was generally good. Two parties with young children were seated near us and the staff seemed to be making them quite welcome. Like many places, it can be noisy. I requested a quiet table and so we were seated in the back, away from the bar, which was good. Tables are very small and close together so if the place is crowded, which it wasn't this time, conversation can be a challenge."

  • "We told the waiter we were going to a show. It took a long time to find him whenever we needed something. We had to search for him to give us the check. He seemed unconcerned with our need to leave for the show."

  • "I had read mixed reviews about Angus but decided to take a chance. My wife and I went for a Saturday lunch before the matinee. I chose the Bistro because of its proximity to the theater. Wine came in a little tiny glass. The waitress offered no option to customize an order, which made me assume the meals were all pre-made. Was told burger comes on "a regular roll" and I could not have a brioche roll, even though the "steak tip burger" came on a brioche bun. Could not switch Brie Cheese to another on a burger. Mediterranean Vegetable Salad had lettuce, cucumbers, and tomato and too much dressing. Dessert was a poor tart; not fresh at all. Outside of the open air dining, and my wife's company, there was very little I enjoyed."

  • "Sun. noon for 2; Angus just opened. Café very close to many Broadway plays. Staff very friendly, immediately seated near front allowing for view of busy street. Nice setting; clean. Server Mickey was very personable and made sure to attend our needs. $10 Bloody Mary’s. Had leek/ potato soup app., was good. Main courses included Mediterranean salad w/chicken and Angus Deluxe Burger. Salad was good, had chickpeas, was fresh, but needed a bit more acidic edge/ vinegar. Burger nice, but small, not gourmet. Got bacon & cheese added; recommend always doing, would be skimpy without. There 1.25 hrs. & place 1/2 full by then; wide range of clients. Food quality good, but disappointed in quantity for price."

  • "Visited for a early dinner after a matinee at a theater nearby. The place was empty. Service was very good, the waiter was extremely attentive. Menu is limited. The burger was a burger. A bit overcooked in a bun with a piece of hard tomato and tiny piece of romaine lettuce (mostly the rib, not the leaf) and some fries thrown on a plate. Same with the fish & chips..a 6 inch x 1 inch strip of bettered and fried fish and some fries thrown on a plate. No garnish, no cole slaw, no pickles. The house wine was very good. The best bet is the brownie Sunday, overpriced at $10, but very tasty, nicely assembled with a mint sprig garnish. Glad I had a restaurant.com coupon because...sorry, it would not be worth the full price of the meal. :-("

  • "food was good, but limited menu and very noisy pre-theater had a reservation but people somehow walked right in front of us, gave their name and were seated host was clueless that we were waiting the last of our group to arrive was told we weren't there yet and waited - we called her and told her where we were seated to she could find us"

  • "We went there to have dinner and it was excellent. Our waitress was very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent. I had one of the best burgers in NY and the bacon was perfectly cooked. It was a great choice!"

  • "There were very limited options on this menu, but I picked it for a pre-theatre dinner with friends who love Joe Allen's. I wanted a piece of grilled chicken with a vegetable side from the menu and the staff could not accomodate that request, even though there is grilled chicken on the menu to be added to salads. I generally have no problem ordering this is most New York restaurants of any size. The Meditarranean Salad with Grilled Chicken that I did receive was not that great and not a great value for the price."

  • "Good food and service, engaging waiter. Menu has lots of choices, either sandwiches or regular dinners. We were in a bit of a hurry because of a 7:00 show (I hate those 7:00 curtains!) and we were served promptly but never felt rushed. Normally my group chooses from the prix-fixe, but our waiter explained that the portions were very small and that all three courses are delivered to table at the same time, so we chose to order from the regular menu and were all four satisfied. House wine in a carafe is a bargain. Not the finest wine, for sure, but pleasant and drinkable."

  • "Don't you just hate when you only have one night in a city and you realize you made a poor choice for a restaurant? The manager did all of the work for our table. The servers don't really do anything but still manage to have a bad attitude. Food is cheap ingredients from a warehouse store. "

  • "... it's about the convenience. Come here for lunch or for a pre-theater burger or salad (not much else worth ordering). The staff is extremely friendly and efficient and it's a great location. But if you're a foodie -- go somewhere else. "

  • "Went to Angus Cafe for pre-theatre dinner....the service was very good to excellent but food was disappointing -it was tasty but very small portions...so you think you're getting a nicely priced meal, it turns out there isn't that much to eat....had to have dessert as we were still quite hungry after the entrees....desserts were very good!
