Diner Reviews
  • "Pretty much a middle of the road restaurant. The items we ate were tasty and well prepared, but a bit heavy on butter and sauce. The menu was a bit uninspired. We were seated in view of the open kitchen and the restroom--probably the worst seat in the house, although there were plenty of other tables available. My personal view is if you're going to have an open kitchen, make it attractive (it was anything but). The manager should not scold the wait staff within earshot of the patrons. Finally, the maitre d was a bit overbearing and pushy when it came to the wine list."

  • "We keep going back because this place hits the mark every time. Though we have our favorites, the specials provide a nice variation."

  • "We had an excellent, memorable dinner at Bouchee about 5 years ago. It continued to be recommended, so we made reservations for dinner the final evening of our attendance at the Bach festival. We ended up apologizing to our dinner guests. Sauces were salty and heavily thickened with cornstarch. Scallops, Duck and Escargot were too salty to eat. Carmel sauce on Tarte Tartin was burned and bitter. Obviously, a very different chef and dinner experience than before and the last time we waste our money at Bouchee."

  • "I would have given 5 stars if the sommelier hadn't been so obnoxious. He was a "know it all" who didn't have his facts straight. He continued to argue with us, spitting on my husband while he was talking. We had a booth by the kitchen and enjoyed watching the food preparation. My husband had the filet and I had the duck. Both were excellent."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Andre's Bouchee Bistro and Wine Bar. The food and service were great, although pricey. It was a little noisy at first but then we adapted and had a great night."

  • "The Croque Monsieur is baked to a golden brown. And if you don't eat ham, just ask and they can make it with beautiful tomatoes. Definitely the best. And the Croque Monsieur pairs perfectly with either the mushroom or onion soup. If you can't finish your Croque Monsieur then bring it home where it can be reheated and is still delicious. The service is excellent at Andre's."

  • "This was our first time here and hopefully will not be our last. The staff was impeccable from seating to the check. Great food, wonderful wine and lovely atmosphere. We had the seafood risotto, but the starters were fantastic. The escargot was delicious and well prepared. The foie gras was delicate and very tasty. The chef even prepared some simpler food for our son who is seven and a very picky eater. They dealt with this request with good humor and delivered what he wanted. Highly recommended."

  • "Once again Bouchee lived up to its reputation as a top rated restaurant. The food was delicious and the place was packed. If you are in the Carmel area make sure you GO!"

  • "We really try to get a feel of a spot based on reviews, that being said, I have never posted a negative review in my time on open table 3 + years. The best way to discribe this place is they think they are something they are not with an attitude. Food is average at best, nothing was in the catagory of amazing, we had the Veal Rack. Wine was terribly over priced even for a nice restaurant. I would make sure you look at all the area Italian spots before deciding on this one. Hopefully it was just a bad night we caught them."

  • "I have had Croque Monsieur many times and this one was the best, baked to a golden brown with delicious ham and cheese. Having already had the delicious mushroom soup, I brought home around half of the large Croque Monsieur and it reheated marvelously. Also the service was excellent."

  • "Excellent, as always. The steaks and salmon were cooked to perfection, as were the vegetables."

  • "Saturday night dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Everything was wonderful. The restaurant is comfortable, beautifully designed and decorated. Every staff member was attentive. The wine list is extensive offering many selections from small wineries around the world. Our food was excellent from appetizers to desserts."

  • "we were only in Carmel for a one night stay and we made the most of it by dining at Andre's... we had a very nice meal - very nice... the staff were very accommodating with our 8 year old girl and very attentive all evening...i had an excellent veal special and my wife had the best duck breast of her life... the lobster bisque , pate appetizer and desserts were also amazing we brought our own wine but read thru their extensive wine list...it looked excellent for the 3 of us (2 1/2 really) we spent $200...it was well worth it and we will go back"

  • "We had an excellent dinner, enjoying a monkfish special stuffed with lobster and lobster sauce. The dessert was an outstanding molten lava cake made with French chocolate."

  • "This was the second French restaurant that we visited in as many days. The food was good and our waiter seemed to be overworked; though he tried to be attentive. What was unacceptable, was the treatment or lack thereof by their sommelier. For whatever reason, we were totally ignored by this individual. We weren't certain if it was because we hadn't ordered an expensive bottle of wine that needed to breathe for 30 minutes like the young couple in the corner only to be fussed over when their appetizers arrived before the wine was ready in which the sommelier brought them another wine to drink or because we lacked a foreign accent. We were treated as if we were wearing scarlet letters. In the end, we took it upon ourselves to order our wine."

  • "We booked 9 person table one month before, for a special occasion involving a family reunion and a grandma's 83rd birthday. To our disappointment, the cake reserved in advance and which was confirmed by email, was forgotten! Luckily, speedy action was taken by the chef and we had a replacement lemon meringue pie complete with candles. Had complimentary drinks too. Well done in the end, thank you."

  • "This is a wonderful restaurant. Great food and wine. The pate' platter was excellent, along with my entrée, which was duck. The owners/hosts were very friendly and hospitable. I plan to return to this French gem!"

  • "My wife ate here when visiting Carmel and were very pleased. Our salad was very tasty with warm goat cheese on top. My wife had the scallops and I had the beef filet both cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Jose our server did a great job. Wine prices are a little steep."

  • "Andre's is both the best French restaurant--and the best restaurant, period--on the Monterey Peninsula. Everything was exactly as it should have been. It was like eating in a restaurant in France and, in fact, I would eat there if it were in France."

  • "This was my Birthday choice, and what a great choice it was, Chef Zagouri is a master and the flavors were absolutely incredible! I highly recommend this lovely place!"

  • "I definitely would come back for lunch or dinner. Everything was really delicious. The mussels, Duck and desserts were over the top. Wine list and by the glass program is right on the mark. "

  • "It's hard to say which we enjoy more, the superb food or the gracious and generous service. Fortunately, at this restaurant, we don't have to make that choice. The chef, Jacques and the owner, Stefan are exemplary."

  • "We've been going to this restaurant for the last 3 years and the food is outstanding and deserves Michelin star. The staff are friendly and the chef is terrific , even the owner is friendly. I recommend this restaurant to anybody who likes to French cuisine ,the wine list is great and affordable. The place is suitable for family and groups and a good place for a first date to make an impression. The staff is very accommodating even to the last moment, I can only say you will always come back to Andre's Bouchee when you're in Carmel."

  • "Good food, would go there again, great service, quick and attentive- Corkage was $25 expensive but would still be considered cheap give the wine prices on the menu- Dessert was excellent. Would go there again for dinner, but remember to book in advance it gets busy on a Saturday."

  • "We have eaten once before at Andre's and liked it enough to look forward to our return. Both the lobster bisque and mushroom soup were delicious as was their pastry encrusted squab. Thanks for such an enjoyable evening."

  • "Six of us ate dinner the other evening and everyone of us gushed how wonderful the food was. I had their famous cream of mushroom soup with truffle oil and it was superb. The subtle, earthy and ethereal flavors are still haunting me. I will most likely always order this from now on. I opted for a lighter meal, selecting the special duck confit salad as my entree. It was delicious and generously portioned, so there was no room for desert, but would have ordered the profiteroles if I had room. Last evening I enjoyed my husband's leftover lamb shank and was once again in food heaven. I can only imagine how amazing it was when first presented at the table. "

  • "Great food and great service w/ an even better wine list. What's not to like. Appetizer portion so large my wife passed on dinner and got a salad. Started w/ sardines (my wife) and mushroom soup for me. Both superb. Sardines were enough for a dinner. I had Dover sole for entree deboned table side. Hadnt had that in years. Delicious. What was especially nice was server never rushed us. Dinner was started when we were ready, not when they were. A local friend had given us several Carmel restaurants as recs and Im glad we chose this one"

  • "Manager/owner picked our wine which was excellent, our waiter was great. Placed us on a window. Food was wonderful. In all if I lived in Carmel I would eat there once a week."

  • "Good atmosphere and good food. However, since the sommelier asked what our budget was then he should respect it and not try to significantly upsell."

  • "Overbearing sommelier, I know what I want and don't need him to over rule me. Main courses were over sauced. "

  • "Andre's Bouchee is our must go restaurant for special occasions, or a guaranteed excellent meal out. It's simply the best restaurant in a city of good restaurants, if you can only pick one - this is the one!"

  • "Given the high rates of this place, I was a bit disappointed. The food was good, but I was hoping for a bit more. "

  • "Another great dinner here: we and our friends love Bouchee. The mushroom bisque, scallop carpaccio, sweetbreads, and rack of veal were amazing. Demi-glace on the veal rack was especially fine. Ended with a tart tartin that wowed us all--if it's on the menu don't miss it! Excellent food, great service, handsome dining room - what more can you ask for? This is our favorite French restaurant in the area, and we wish they were located next door to us! (But it's okay, being here gives us a reason to come down for both Parker-Lusseau Bakery AND Bouchee)"

  • "Although the wine list is extensive it is hugely overpriced. It was our wedding anniversary so we just had a glass each rather than pay such an exorbitant fee. The bartender serves the wine and was rather upset that we did not buy the bottle we originally were going too, they were charging $179 (he said we could get $25 discount). The next day we bought it for $58."

  • "Food was great, pretty restaurant with an amazing wine list, but the sommelier was awful. My husband doesn't drink. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay, and the sommelier immediately tried to get me to upgrade (his words) to a bottle of very expensive Chard. I mentioned that my husband doesn't drink ( twice). He suggested a half bottle. The bottle was $60. The half was, like, $30+. I finally got him to agree to bring me the original glass I'd ordered, and he seemed quite disappointed in me! I then heard him trying the same thing at the two tables closest to us. Not cool."
