A word from Anchor and Hope
From the owners of Town Hall and Salt House comes Anchor & Hope Restaurant, an oyster bar and fish house located at 83 Minna Street. Housed in a renovated, 100 year old brick building, formerly the studio of sculptor Benny Bufano, Anchor & Hope offers the warmth of an Eastern Seaboard fish house with dishes such as warm sea urchin served in the shell, our lobster roll, and petrale sole…and yes, there are dishes for those who fear the sea.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Really liked the energy, the service and food. Good job with the ambiance even though there is big construction going on. They did not have my table ready when we got there but we worked it out."

  • "A&H is one of our go-to places. Our kids love it; there's something for everyone, as long as they like fish. the complimentary chips are a really nice touch. service is a always great, food is delicious!"

  • "Great seafood, but a tad over-priced with portions a little too small."

  • "I have been to Anchor and Hope about 6 times and each time I am impressed with the quality, taste and presentation of the seafood dishes. Also each time I have been impressed by the waiters, bar tenders and hosts. This place is run by restaurant pros. If they warmed up the interior with some noise reduction and perhaps more texture and color I would give it 5 stars. I great meal and at very fair prices."

  • "I found Anchor & Hope while wandering around San Francisco on a beautiful late June afternoon. Tucked away next to a construction site on Minna Lane, its very location and ambience intrigued me. I decided to stop by for a drink that night. Danny, the manager, convinced me to try a selection from the "vermouth program" he'd devised and my choice -- a Cardomara (with cardamon) -- was indeed delicious. The slow addition of Fever Tree tonic made for a very pleasing hour at the bar. I really enjoyed listening to Danny's vivid descriptions of various wines, and the cultures, from which they come. I returned for dinner the next night, with a friend. It was delightful. I had Rockfish with a squid ink risotto...another wonderful discovery."

  • "The food was underwhelming, a bit too greasy and oily, but the service of the hostess, the waiter, as well the service/bus boy was very good."

  • "Asked our marriott concierge for a rec on a good place to go with 10 colleagues. This restaurant was an excellent choice on all fronts: location, ambiance, staff friendliness. The red spotted trout was OFF THE CHARTS delicious."

  • "We were in SF for our anniversary and at the last minute decided to make a reservation at Anchor and Hope. We had a great experience and plan to go back soon. The restaurant is an old converted machine shop and has a really historic feel. The food was very good, service was excellent, price very reasonable."

  • "If you're looking for a restaurant in downtown SF with fantastic seafood and excellent ambiance, look no further. I get the lobster roll, clam chowder, oysters and it always takes me back to New England :) There is not a single item on the menu I wouldn't recommend. Staff is absolutely fantastic."

  • "A great lunch spot - always good and efficient service too. Would say that the lobster roll is always a good choice. Easy to eat considering the amount of lobster it has. Mussels are ALWAYS great. One at our table ordered fish that looked fantastic with some toppings that made us think it was chicken. Really good obviously because the plate was empty at the end of the meal! Definitely would recommend."

  • "The dishes my wife and I had were the best we've had. She tried the trout and I had the halifbut. Taste, presentation, it all was wonderfully and originally done. Almost forgot, the Oysters Epiphany(malpecs) was almost that, outstanding. Hats off and easy to see why they are such an up and comer in the San Francisco and national restaurant scene."

  • "Anchor & Hope is a great place to enjoy high-quality seafood. We had a variety of raw oysters, salmon tartare, halibut and of course the famous 'angels on horseback.' We had a lovely white wine that the sommelier had described to us. There are a lot of good choices on the menu for fish-lovers. My only quibble with the food is that my halibut entree arrived at near room temperature. But, the food was still very enjoyable."

  • "Met a friend there for lunch during the week. Had the lobster roll, it was so good-the bread holding the lobster was toasted, soft, perfect. It was super loud but not unusual for a restaurant with such high ceilings. "

  • "The lobster roll was good, and the chips and dip were fun. The clam chowder was mediocre at best - it was a huge disappointment. The salmon tartar was superb. I would definitely order it again. I don't remember what it was called on the menu but our dessert was essentially a black and white mousse topped with caramel, cookie crumbs, and whipped cream. Now that was amazing. "

  • "This was my first time here...and has been on my 'list' for quite a while! I enjoyed their shrimp roll and the rockfish ceviche and broccoli rabe. Loved the house-made potato chips...glad they didn't bring more or I would have eaten them all!!! "

  • "This was our second time here. We had octopus as an appetizer, with white beans, fennel, olives and oranges. Very good. Lobster roll without the bread (as we requested) was excellent. A couple areas for improvement: the hostess was not totally competent in seating people (for example, when I was a hostess, I was taught to glance behind you to make sure the correct diners are following you, which she did not do, resulting in a mix up with our table, and resulting in our having to wait about 15 minutes). Secondly, the very nice, very accommodating server had the annoying habit of squatting down while chatting about the food. I find this too intimate and just plain weird. I wonder who started this, which seems common in some places."

  • "This is a convenient lunch spot for downtown workers and I keep trying to like it, but the food just isn't great. The hosts are always overwhelmed, leading to long wait regardless of your reservation time. Wait staff tries to make up for the negative tone, and is generally professional and efficient. The room gets way because of zero sound proofing, but the look of the space is attractive. The menu is what you'd expect from a fish house, although pricing a mixed bag. More formal entrees are a bit higher than you'd expect. Portions are meager, but you are thankful because every time I have eaten here at least one person's fish is woefully overcooked and has to be sent back. A fish house needs to know how to cook fish, period."

  • "We chose Anchor & Hope for a mid-week dinner. The brightest part of our evening was Adam, who served our table. He was attentive without being overbearing (and not bad to look at either). The food, on the other had, was horrible. The complimentary potato chips were cold and greasy and not crisp at all. I ordered the fish and chips and my guest ordered the steak. The steak was small and 3/4 the plate was covered with bibb lettuce and a weak vinaigrette dressing and some very greasy onion rings. The fish looked appetizing, but the crust was not crunchy and the meager amount of fries on the plate were not enough to keep the grease from accumulating on the bottom of the plate. $ 83 dollars later, it was just not worth the price."

  • "I LOVE Anchor & Hope! The mussels are to die for, and the service was excellent! "

  • "Normally fish & chips is cod, hake or haddock. Not so at A&H - it's flounder and it's really light and flaky. This is my go-to order here, along with a Celebrator doppel bock beer."

  • "Good food, vibrant atmosphere, excellent wine selections. I like this place!"

  • "We enjoyed their trout very much. It was moist yet crispy on the outside. Their lobster roll, did not impress me....and I would have rather had coleslaw from KFC! I was really excited about their dessert, but it was disappointing... we could only have a spoonful because it was so SWEET! Overall, I enjoyed the ambiance, trout and great service."

  • "The food was good but the portions of the main courses were small. Prices were pretty typical for SF bistro, ie inflated. Good wine and beer list. Noisy but fun and tolerable. Not good for a candlelight romantic tete a tete. Had mussels and fries, very yummy. W"

  • "Lunch was perfection! The ceviche is flavorful and a great lunch portion. The beet salad was just the right amount of beets and goat cheese! I'd definitely return."

  • "Took a client for lunch. She said she enjoyed the meal. However, I found it very loud and was not favorable impressed with crab louies as the chopped raw onion mixed into the crab did not add to the flavor. This salad treatment does not compare well to others I have had in SF. The service was initially very good but dropped off near end of time there, mostly likely due to servers being stretched thin. A&H has many quaint touches that client remarked upon. Probably would not book there for future client meals due to noise level."

  • "perhaps it was because we were two women? the waitress really didn't "serve" us...i had to flag her down to take our order...flag her down to take away our starter...flag her down to ask where our main course was. and the wait between appetizer and main course was a bit too long for my taste. What should have been an hour to an hour 1/2 lunch lasted 2 hours. That's just fine if you don't need to go to work...but really...2 hours at a casual place? the food however, amazing. always so happy with the lobster roll (take away), chopped salad with grilled shrimp, and the salmon sandwich. The starter calamari was so delightful. unfortunately, the service marred the lunch."

  • "I picked this restaurant at random from Open Table because we decided we wanted to try something new. It had good reviews from the OpenTable users and we were not at all disappointed. Food was great, lively and busy all evening long. I learned it's six years old but it had the vibe of a new hot spot. I wanted to try most of the menu. Service was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We were thirilled. "

  • "the food was good, not superb- I wonder if we ordered wrong, but did have to send back one dish, as the a halibut came out mushy. oysters were excellent- side salad not on menu was, weirdly, one of the best things we ordered. think i should have gotten the lobster roll"

  • "Appitizers were delicious but our mains could have used a bit more of a flavor punch but the fish was cooked perfect. I'd certainly try this place again and I'd recommend it. Nice wine list by the glass & plenty of beers to choose from. Service staff friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Definatly worth a try. Nice relaxed vibe as well. "

  • "Made last minute reservations for a Sat night. Had to wait a little but that's understandable. They accommodated our party of 2 at a 4 person table due to people lingering at what was to be our 2 person table. The place is loud and dark AND a lot of fun. Beau coup brewskis! Wait staff was excellent. Food was above average!"

  • "The food and service was great! Great beer selection. We had oysters from east and west coast and they were fresh.. Had the stuffed crab for appetizer.. And had the halibut and lobster roll for dinner.. Was very yummy! The waitress was pleasant and attentive. Thank you! "

  • "My table ordered the bacon-wrapped oysters and the mussels & fries as appetizers, I thought the fries were the best part. I had clam chowder, it was really creamy but taste was just okay, and then the rock cod as my main. The rock cod with a risotto cake and carrots was the most bland dish I've ever had. Literally nothing had flavor except the carrots. There was two sauces on the cod dish and neither of them tasted like anything. My fiancé got the Lobster roll and the lobster also had absolutely no flavor although the roll they serve it on is good. The ambiance in this place is cute but overall it's a huge miss! No one at my table was super satisfied with their meal. I wouldn't go back or recommend this place. "
