  • "Our family of four began our weekend of plays with dinner at Amuse. The service was outstanding - the food was very good indeed - hen, porterhouse pork, steak and halibut - with two appetizers - salami plate and tomato salad. The pork arrived at a temperature less than hot - the waiter bought the family a dessert of apology (appreciated). The flavors were well balanced - the entree portions were reasonable. The tomato salad was not quite what the description suggested - it had watermelon disguised as tomato and the portion was so preciously small the complex flavors were difficult to discern. We would return - and ask more questions next time."

  • "Wow. Three of the 5 items we ate were special, the halibut quality and preparation VERY special. The green salad, poorly and underdressed, and the pasta preparation needs work if it is to stay on the menu. Still we had a wonderful time, lovely local wine and aypttentive and friendly service. We met so,e wonderful people there."

  • "I was disappointed to be seated (with a 5:30 PM reservation for 2) @ a table directly in the middle of the inside dining room. We observed the hostess taking multiple phone calls, meanwhile patrons waited for extended periods of time to be seated, while she solved problems with reservations or the booking of future reservations. From our "middle of the hub" vantage point we also easily overheard the wait staff receiving a "dressing down" about a previous meals activities/inattention to customer needs. This however, while a distraction, did not translate into a lack of tastiness of our meals chosen. The food was prepared to perfection and the presentation was excellent. I do hope they will deal more privately with reservations or HR issues"

  • "We were anticipating a fabulous meal based on previous reviews. Our dinner was good, but uneven, so overall it was less than expected. In addition, we felt rushed through the amuse and appetizers. We would recommend the Corn Soup, Chicken Mousse, Beignet dessert and Chocolate Truffle cake. The dessert was the highlight of the meal."

  • "This is my 3rd visit to this gem in Ashland. On my first visit, I just came upon it as I was exploring the little town. Each visit the food and service have been wonderful. Highly recommend trying it. If you are going to a 8pm play, make a 6-6:15 reservation. This will give you plenty of time to enjoy the experience!"

  • "We generally eat here at least once when seeing the plays in Ashland. The service is excellent. The food has always been very well prepared with a few interesting twists. The compressed cucumber with the salmon was very good; the salad was perfectly dressed; my steak came with some of the sweetest chard I've ever eaten. My only complaint was that the herb butter sauce on the steak was too salty for my taste. The wine list, though short, had some nice wines. The beignets - ah the beignets - so crispy on the outside and light and airy inside. They may have floated off the plate into our mouths."

Everything was fantastic - including the chicken liver mousse with stone fruits (a special appetizer that evening). By far our favorite restaurant in Ashland."

  • "I always look forward to having dinner at Amuse, seeing it as an oasis on my way north on I-5. It has always been a wonderful experience not only for the excellent food but the atmosphere as well. But this most recent visit was a bit of a disappointment. The amuse bouche was essentially the same as the special starter, which I wish the the waiter had pointed out instead of just recommending it. It, the starter, was, by the way, excellent. The main course was the game hen with kale. The meat had a burnt taste about it and the kale bitter. Or perhaps the "burnt" sensation was actually the bitterness of the kale. The wine was well recommended by the waiter, whose general service was impeccable."

  • "Dinner here has always been excellent. We come to Ashland every year and Amuse is the type of restaurant that you look forward dining at although we were kind of disappointed this year. The spring onion soup was delicious, light and flavorful. The main course, halibut, left a lot to be desired. While the fish was obviously fresh and cooked perfectly, it was practically the only thing on the plate. A few slices of cooked rhubarb, 3 very thin, small slices of crunchy roasted fennel, and a few dabs of rhubarb sauce and a few dabs of a green sauce do not add up to a $30 entree. It did, however, leave room for the beignets for dessert!"

  • "The food was good, but not memorable. Advertised pluots barely made their appearance known on halibut dish. Truffle presence was almost undetectable on game hen. Waiter spent much of evening distracted by a table of women he knew, so we had to ask others for anything we needed. On the upside, wine was very sensibly priced, and we were well received upon arrival. Our disappointment, then, was that, with just a bit more intensity in the kitchen and more attention to service, a reasonably good meal could have been outstanding."

  • "We make an annual pilgrimage to Ashland each year for the OSF and we always try to include a visit to Amuse. We were not disappointed. The food was exceptional. The porterhouse pork chops with a Chimchurri sauce was exceptional and my wife really enjoyed her scallops. The chocolate souffle was worth the extra time on the eliptical to burn off the caloies. The service was friendly, though our waiter had little insight into the preparation of the food."

It is small and intimate, which completely takes you away from the world of corporate/chain dining places. You know you are in someplace special. The food is always great, and the menu changes periodically so you can always look forward to something new if you only dine there once or twice a year. I usually would not rave about prawns, but the dish I had Saturday night was the tastiest I have ever had anywhere. All the others at the table agreed that their meal was just what they were expecting and more. The service was beyond reproach. "

  • "Briefly, last year when we ate here (for the 4th time) the entres were far too salty. (I am not on a low salt regimen and like usual amounts of salt in food). This time I told the waitress about last year 's bad experience and she said she would "definitely tell the chef". Yet, the entres were largely ruined again with excessive salt. We will never return."

  • "Amuse was recommended by out of town friends for its charm and fine food. It did not disappoint. Food was excellent, presentation and plating sophisticated, staff attentive and professional. Dining area is small, intimate. We were seated near the front window where the view of the street neither distracted nor added to our enjoyment of the evening. We had just enough feeling of separation from other diners, and the noise level was negligible in spite of the room being small. All four of us chose fresh halibut, which was cooked perfectly. Salads were unique and large enough to split. Total cost of meal was high, courses are a la carte. Dinner for four with two bottles of wine was around $255 including tip. Nice place for celebratory meal."

  • "We have dined & Amuse many times over the past 8 years. This experience was honestly less than we had come to expect. The beet salad was very flat with the rice accoutrement. The scallops were wonderful but the au jus had nothing to absorb the flavor as they sat on Lima beans and hard cut vegetables. It didn't work. The game hen and kale was saturated with truffle oil. I love the flavor of truffle but when that is ALL you taste, it's disappointing."

  • "Four of us had a meal at Amuse recently. Every bite on every plate was excellent. We've dined in San Francisco, La, and Seattle, and this was I the equal of any restaurant there. Innovative combinations of locally available produce, delicious modern takes on French classics, and some flat out strangeness (chocolate ganache with beet sauce and olives) that still managed to be tasty."

The food was absolutely delicious - from the green garlic soup, asparagus salad to the rib eye steak, halibut with fresh peas and roasted game hen. Service was also just right - friendly and helpful.   • "Lovely restauirant. Each room was small making for an intimate dining experience. The service was first rate. The food was amazing. In particular the benignets that ended the meal were so light yet crisp and flavorful. The best I've ever had putting New Orleans's Cafe du Monde to shame."
