Opened in 2002 by Anju Sharma, is a gem tucked away on the upper east side of Manhattan, the stylish restaurant evokes images of spices, with its ochre colored walls and sensuous red-orange suede wrap-around banquettes. Art deco chandeliers and pristine linens complete the ambience. In a short period of time, Amma has received numerous accolades from the press. Amma was rated "Two Stars" by Mr. William Grimes of NY Times. At Amma, the wine list is updated on a weekly basis and is carefully chosen from 30 countries from around the world. Diner Reviews
  • "Restaurant was freezing cold. Customers were eating with their coats on. We had to ask the waiter to turn it down twice. The food took 45 minutes to arrive just two main dishes."

  • "Was attracted by the high Google rating. Poor vine list, austere Riesling, slow waiters (20 minutes before we got the menu), very noisy, tables ridiculously close together. Very ordinary bad-cooked rice as a side order for $10 extra just nonsense. After All, it took 1 hour to get our food ready on regular Tuesday night. Amma? Never again!"

  • "We went to try Amma because the reviews indicated it was "unusual" and we agree. There are most of the expected dishes on the menu, but also several nice turns on traditional Indian. And everything was excellent!"

  • "The best Indian food I've ever had. Tikka masala was outstanding. I would highly recommend"

  • "The waitstaff was extremely rude and non-attentive. When I asked for my check, the waiter told me to finish my food first. The food was good enough that I may go back, but honestly the service I've had."

  • "We have been going to Amma since our family friend from India recommended the restaurant to us about 10 years ago. Never disappoints. Always great food and services."

  • "I was extremely excited about going to Ammu, since I had heard it was one of the best Indian restaurants in Manhattan. I made a reservation for 8:15pm and we didn't leave until 10:30pm. This was not because we loved the restaurant and food so much, but because it took so long to be served. We ordered one appetizer to share -- nan and cucumber/yogurt dip, then Tandoori chicken and lamb Rogan Gosh for our main course. From the moment we were seated, we waited. We waited for water; we waited to give our food order; we waited 20 minutes for the simple appetizer to arrive. Then we waited more than an hour for our main course. When it finally arrived, the chicken was dry, and the lamb was OK. Nothing special at all. Such a disappointment."

  • "We did arrive 20 minutes late for our reservation. The Host sent us back to the bar which is a counter with no stools and right in the path of all the wait staff and the kitchen. There was no bar tender during our 40 min. wait to be seated nor were we even offered the chance to buy a drink. We were finally seated and ordered our drinks, appetizers and entrees. The appetizers came quickly and were delicious. We then waited another 45 min. before our entrees came. Several times during the meal our waiter completely disappeared. It was painful. All in all we were trapped in this place for 2 hours and 40 minutes and we did not even try to order dessert. The food was awesome. The reception, service and consideration of our time was not."

  • "Outstanding North Indian restaurant in mid-town NYC, would return in a heartbeat."

  • "Went for restaurant week and really enjoyed the meal. Loved the Mahi Mahi and the small eggplant with peanut curry."

  • "I love Indian food. After spending a year in India, my love for the cuisine was cemented. I wanted to try a new Indian restaurant in my work neighborhood. Based on the reviews I decided to check out Amma. My friend and I ordered off the Restaurant week menu. The menu provide a great selection of options. We had the beet soup, paneer, chaat (apps), and the tandoori chicken and eggplant (entrees). I would have to say I was underwhelm by the portions and flavors. The food was either too spicy so you couldn't experience the flavorful nuances of the chaat and paneer or the food was bland like the curry on the eggplant. The regular menu is a bit pricy; given that and the mediocre food, I WOULD NOT recommend this place."

  • "Aside from two of the three appetizers we had the food was disappointing. Indian food is our favorite cuisine and the reviews were so strong for this restaurant and that is why we choose it. But our experience did not match the the reviews this restaurant has received."

  • "The best indian restaurant in all of Manhattan, and very reasonably priced. This is coming from a true brownie, who has grown up eating indian food and even cooks it."

  • "We like Indian food, and were glad to have found Amma's. The dishes were delicious, albeit a little on the spicy side (fortunately we like spicy). One memorable dish was the Manchurian Cauliflower - great!. We will definitely go back again."

  • "Amma is a small, cozy restaurant with good ambiance, wonderful food, and superb service. It's on my list of places to visit again."

  • "A noteworthy place to go for superior quality Indian cuisine, The atmosphere is nice but a bit cramped. Service is helpful but tends to watch you too attentively. Consider ordering the tasting menu."

  • "If you like Indian food, then this neighborhood gem should be on your to-do list for dining. The food was outstanding and the service, over the top. The server switched out a desert for me when I said I wanted something different than what was not on the tasting menu. The restaurant is inside of a building that appears to be the first floor of an apartment sitting and dining room. Don't be mislead by its size. The experience was better than I had expected after reading other reviews. I give this restaurant my highest rating for Indian food."

  • "Went there for restaurant week and left very satisfied with the restaurant and most importantly with the food. They even changed a menu item for me as I can't eat food that's too spicy. Everything was delicious and the service was great too. Will definitely be going back!"

  • "I have been to Amma a few times and was quite satisfied with the food quality. The restaurant week food quality is a whole level under comparing to the regular meal. Go there in non restaurant week time!"

  • "Food is good, but the price tag is really for the ambience, the place was intimate without crowding, love the light fixture. The presentation of the food was beautiful, garnishes were pretty to look at."

  • "Didn't realize this restaurant was in my neighborhood and so glad I found it. The food is excellent and the presentation is fantastic. It's a very well run restaurant, nice for a date or dinner with friends. Very good quality not Indian fast food like so many other places in the city."

  • "They called us twice to confirm reservation. The 2nd time they called they threatened to give our table away if we were five minutes late. We were early and our table was ready. Unfortunately they only offered a special valentines menu and not the regular menu. For $50 a person you got lots of food. Food was good. Would go back to try regular menu."

  • "Amma is the best high end indian in nyc. Delicious and always satisfies."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "I've eaten at Amma about 6-7 times, and the food has always been good, but the last two times the last has been slipping off. The food used to have a nice flavor. But lately is kind of bland. SService is great as usual. And so is the ambiance."

  • "Everyone was very nice We had a very good table up by the window but if we had been put in the back, we would have left. Too close quarters and dark. My husband's Goan fish curry was interesting. My lamb rogan josh was not. I realize this is an older restaurant and the sanitary facilities are probably "grandfathered" but the final straw for me was ONE toilet for the entire staff and all the guests. NO! We will not be back."

  • "My wife and I were introduced to Amma by friends, who suggested it as a good Indian restaurant. Not being Indian cuisine experts, we went along with them prepared to be pleased (why else dine out?), and indeed we were: all four of us. Care in preparation, presentation and the right amount of personal inventive in the menu, with none of the arrogance of the self-centered creative in search of fame - a temptation that requires character to resist, in Manhattan. We were helped kindly and patiently as we tried to make our minds while conversing. If anything, we felt a trifle too cozy in a room that could have been filled a tad less, if comfort had been the only concern. But then, it was a Saturday evening..."

  • "We don't have an Indian restaurant in our town, so we always seek out Indian food when we travel. Amma's was cozy and nicely decorated. I had the chicken tikka masala and my hubby had a lamb dish. Both were wonderful (as was the fried okra side dish).if you've got a craving for Indian food, go to Ammas!"

  • "We had the 50 dollar Tasting Menu for 4 people and the overall check was for 280 bucks with wine. The food was good but not that great that I would like to visit again. We had a Cottage Cheeze dish where the cottage cheese was very hard. Even on complaining we did not get any proper response from the server. Overall the place is good but does not justify the cost. Rather should had gone for the ala carte menu."

  • "When in NYC we like to take advantage of all the ethnic options, and this one was very good. I needed some recommendations and the staff was very helpful. We ordered Chicken Tandoor and Saag Paneer. The half chicken was cooked so perfectly and the yogurt and spices that were in the marinade made for a very moist and flavorful dish. The Saag Paneer, with big chunks of cheese, was a perfect pairing for the chicken. We started with trio of vegetarian samosas and they were so good too. We were also given a small taste of a vegetarian appetizer which was a treat from the chef. Very nice. Highly recommend."

  • "The food was - as usual - excellent. While their a la carte menu for dinner can be a little pricey, Amma is a great place for above average north and south Indian food that is light years ahead most other places in the city. The iddly upma is wonderful - what a great idea to combine the two!"

  • "New Year's Eve was handled in a very pleasant low key manner with a prix fixe dinner including 5 appetizers and a choice of one main course, and then a choice of one of 3 desserts. The service was attentive and caring. A welcoming atmosphere and experience. Only drawback was no Poori bread, but in an effort to amend that, another bread was provided gratis, which was not necessary but left me with the impression that pleasing the diner was very important to the service staff. A lovely evening."

  • "Three of us enjoyed lunch at Amma-- we chose the $16.95, 3-course with tandoori chicken--- sooo moist and delicious with fabulous dal that put a previous version from another Indian restaurant to shame! We enjoyed their appetizers and ordered an additional spinach dish and two desserts. All in all, the food was excellent, much better than Amma's Lexington Avenue competition. The service was quite good and the decor was comfortable and nice, except that their entry door opens directly into the room which was a little awkward."

  • "My husband and I were in New York for Christmas and were looking for a good restaurant open on Christmas day. We found Amma on Yelp. The reviews were mostly good, so we thought we'd give it a try. We ended up extremely happy we went. We had made a reservation so our table was waiting for us. The food was delicious - the butter chicken and saag paneer were so yummy. We added samosas, garlic naan, and raita to complete our meal. Everything was wonderful. Good service, not too loud. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Amma."

  • "I think this is among the best Indian I've ever eaten in the city. The waitstaff was attentive, and even spooned the different dishes out among our plates! The biggest disappointment is that they didn't have the bottle of wine that we wanted, and it took a few minutes for them to come back and let us know that. While the restaurant isn't overly impressive in terms of the decor, boy is the food delicious!"
