Sal's old school meatballs and the baked pecorino were absolutely delicious. The bufalo riccotta bruschetta, however, was bland and really not anything I would recommend or order again. The only real complaint I have is that our server was not engaging. My friend and I were celebrating her 30th birthday on Tuesday night-which was her first time to the restaurant. Over all 10 restaurant options I gave her-she chose you and we're both really happy she did. Aside from the pasta special with the pork jowl being over salted, everything else we ordered was a home run! The manager and server also sent out the dessert special for her b-day which to any table of two women is the best thing you can ever do so, we'll be seeing you soon. The food is fresh and delicious, and using simple, whole ingredients to make dishes is what sets it apart from the rest. Our server was attentive, patient about describing the dishes, and eager to help. The food came quickly, and there was no problem in getting to the Kimmel. Our only complaint was the noise level: unacceptable because we could not hear each other across our small table. Some of the noise was due to a a large and noisy family group trying to converse from one end of their table to the other. The restaurant is not entirely to blame for the insensitivity of its patrons; however, the noise level was quite high when that table of 10 was empty. We were able to change our table for 4 to the counter along the kitchen line and, although the kitchen was quite busy, the chefs would still answer a quick question and interact. After living in the Washington Square West neighborhood for two years I finally made it to Amis. My only regret is not coming here sooner. Everything, down to the Foccacia bread, is delicious. We have been guest at AMIS many times now and never had a menu item we didn't enjoy. The food and service is consistenty outatanding. Menu additions are always a nice surprise as on this visit it was a Salmon Antipasti special. Staff know the food well and all are able to provide great assistance with ordering. Not much has changed - ambience/decor, fine service, and menu (which is good or bad depending on your perspective). For us, it was a good thing as we were able to try appetizers and entrees that we could not the last time. The veal tongue and swordfish meatballs were a hit; the chicken liver bruschetta was a bit much. For the main courses, we loved the oxtail cannelloni and ribeye involtini. The chestnut fettucini with duck ragu had a very unique taste is is worth the try. Definitely worth another return. We always sit at the counter behind which the chefs do their work. It is so interesting to watch them. Amis runs like a well-oiled machine. We ordered the always delicious eggplant caponata and the 3 specials of that evening all of which involved pork, a cold-sliced appetizer, a pork ragu pasta, and a slow braised pork entree. All three were fabulous. Standing near us was the manager of another Vetri restaurant who was observing that evening, and she helped us figure out which dishes were passing by us on their way to other diners. The head chef recognized us from other visits and sent over a complimentary pasta dish and a semifreddo sundae. Yum! My husband and I were in town recently and honestly the highlight of our trip was our dinner at Amis. We invited our friends from South Philly. They had never been there and absolutely loved it. We started with lots of small plates. Each small plate was soooooo delicious. All four of us enjoyed a pasta entree that was so good too. Two of us had the plate of cookies for dessert. We loved the cookies with the pine nuts. I need to find that recipe and make some at home. Mark Vetri you are amazing.
