Diner Reviews
  • "Everything is wonderful from the food to the setting, but the service is what sets Amis apart from most other restaurants. The staff are all long term, they know us by name and treat us better than we deserve. We eat out a lot and no other compares."

  • "We are semi-regulars and were a bit surprised at one of our entres this past Friday evening. The caponata was superb. My eggplant lasagne with veal also was very nice, as was out desert. BUT, my dinner partner's tagliatelle pasta dish was smothered in excess oil. She felt upset the remainder of our evening out at the Symphony. My one taste of her dish overpowered my taste buds also. Probably a "fluke", but an unexpected BLIP at Amis. The manager was surprised, when I mentioned the problem with the dish, as we paid our check."

  • "Went out for a rare date night with my wife. We arrived about an hour early for our reservation but we were able to get a seat within 20 minutes. We were looking for a casual restaurant with good food and drinks. We found exactly what were looking for. The atmosphere was lively as expected. The food including the bufala ricotta was excellent. I had the rigatoni with sepia. I never had sepia before so I wasn't sure what it would taste like. It was salty to me but I don't use a lot of salt when I cook so I am a little sensitive to the taste. It was still good. My wife had the bucatini with jalapenos which was very good. My wife raved about the cocktails. The beer selection was excellent. Overall, it was a great experience."

  • "I am very particular about pastas and this place never failed me! We had the ricotta and veal tongue as starters and they are heaven! The pastas, there is nothing more to say about them, simply divine. And the services! They just keep getting better. When we ordered the ricotta, they also gave us an extra mousse on the house for the bruschetta. The Jalapeno and almond pesto bucatini was a bit salty at first and they re-made it for us and gave us a plate of fried brussel sprouts while we wait for the pasta to remade! Excellent service and very attentive! Overall great food and great service and very very impressed!! Highly recommend!"

  • "Amis deserves its reputation for high quality, authentic, interesting food choices. Marc Vetri is by far the best chef in the city The service is friendly and helpful without being overly talkative. Great place to go before theater/orchestra/opera since it is a short walk to Broad St. and you can get in and get out in a shortish time frame if necessary."

  • "I love Amis and the food did not disappoint (as usual, everything was outstanding), but I had a 7:45 reservation for 3 and ended up waiting 20 minutes to be seated. I understand that this happens sometimes, but I was not the only party waiting for a table...it seemed like at least 3 other groups before me had reservations yet had to wait to be seated. Also, we did not receive our beverages until after our appetizers came (this is after giving up trying to get beverages from the bar). It also took way too long to get the remainder of my entree wrapped up (over 10 minutes after my friends' dishes had been cleared...perhaps this is why we had to wait so long to get seated?). Disappointed in the service from one of my favorite restaurants."

  • "Our group of four ordered a total of 12 menu items. Each was outstanding. Amis truly deserves its lofty ratings; we were very impressed."

  • "Folks were friendly and the bar scene (and noise) were fine - it's a bistro after all. The service was uneven. But, the food was way below what I'd expect at that price range, at any price range in fact. The swordfish meatballs sounded nice in theory but were horridly executed, with overcooked polenta and pine nuts; the lamb shoulder was grilled under a press, to oblivion. The wine was pedestrian."

  • "one of us really enjoyed the meal.especially because if the soft shell crab special that night........early for soft shells, didn't expect it on the menu, and a well prepared dish on of us really had a difficult time mostly because of being gluten free....and the house bread is sooooo good. There were several items that were tried, but again most things were to be enjoyed with crackers or breads."

  • "Dinner was not off to a great start when our table was not ready and we went to the bar to wait. The very busy-acting bartender acted like I was being ridiculous when I asked him to help me pick a wine. He gave me one taste and when I didn't like it, tossed me another copy of the list. So I went without pre-dinner drink. Luckily, we were seated soon and in a far corner of the restaurant. The space is very small and loud with servers running everywhere. Be careful not to get seated between the server station and the bar. Our server was great. I loved her very candid recommendations."

  • "AMIS continues to be the 'oh-so-consistent 'neighborhood' restaurant, seamlessly perfect for a special occasion or to have a great dining and social experience without having to patronize one of the local "Square" establishments or be seen at any number of Philly's pretentious spots (and this is no knock against their food). AMIS just brings a smile. And yes - the kitchen staff goes about meticulously killing every dish it turns out. Home run, home run, home run.... I hope you're lucky enough to get the squid ink pasta with fresh lump crab. Or the freshest twist on a simple escarole salad east of Everywhere Street. And a word to the wise - AMIS' deserts are uniformly excellent - nothing is ruined by being overly sweet."

  • "Despite (an Opentable) reservation, was seated late, and after numerous other parties came in after us. It felt like we were being rushed out the door despite there being plenty of tables open at the end, e.g. the check was dropped off before we were even done eating. Food was good, but there are far better options in the city for the price."

  • "Amis has a menu of assorted little plates and larger entrees. Our server was extremely helpful in making recommendations, because a lot of the options needed some translating for all but the most knowledgeable foodies. Two small plates, two entrees, and a vegetable were plenty to share. The ribs with blood orange glaze and the fried Brussels sprouts were highlights. The only caution here is that several of the selections were generously salted; if you're hypertensive, be sure to ask for lower sodium choices."

  • "Didn't think brunch would be all that here, but man was I wrong. Definitely not your typical brunch line-up (which is typically what I want) but was truly impressed with the way in which the chef took the brunch concept and interwove it with italian cuisine. Oh definitely get the pancakes with the ice cream/butter topping. So dang good."

  • "We arrived on time for our 7:15 reservation, but a table was not ready for us until 7:45. It is extremely noisy, very difficult to hear even those sitting at your table and the waiter. The food was good, I would have liked slightly larger portions. We had plenty of room for desert! The fried cauliflower was tasty, very salty. The spinach lasagna was very good also. We will not be returning to Amis."

  • "We like the food, love the atmosphere and absolutely love the service. Brian always comes by to say hi and is very personable. They know our likes and preferences as to where to we like to sit, what we like to eat and how we like things prepared. All of the staff are friendly and personable which is why we eat here at least once per week and often more. Not sure why other resturants cannot get it this right, but we have no found any that do."

  • "I took my boyfriend here and we sat at the chef's table. It was great watching the kitchen in action! The menu is phenomenal and we wanted to try everything! We had 3 small plates shared, I ordered a small plate and kale salad as my main course and my boyfriend ordered the lamb as a main. This was a lot of food!! But I'm not complaining, next time I'll go with a crowd so we can order one of everything and share :) shout out to our waitress- after I ordered dessert but realized we were on a time crunch and had to cancel the order, she still brought me a scoop of the salted butter semi-fredo. To die for!! So sweet of her!! Definitely coming back!!"

  • "I saw a show on Food Network about unique small plates that featured Amis. My boyfriend and I are from D.C. but come to Philly at least once a year to hear the Orchestra. We were looking for spots close to Kimmel Center. We both will eat anything and the tripe stew, sweetbreads, and grilled tongue were all awesome! Bucatini was also super. It was a perfect place to go on any old night not expensive and not gigantic portions. You could get a lot of little things and share or get your own entree. Will be returning for sure! Great experience."

  • "We requested to sit in front of the kitchen. The only problem was seeing all the wonderful dishes and knowing our stomaches could only hold a few choices. We started with a mixed salumi plate! Wow, the variety of homemade mortadella, terrine and salumi del giorno along with special sauces was a fantastic way to start our delectable journey. I chose cockles next with a broth so savory. My husband chose arincini which melted in the mouth. Our last small plates were the so sweet Tuscan kale and fried cauliflower. We had the delicious mozzellera packed as a take home treat. The staff was very attentive and the kitchen staff worked so well together. We want to go back to try other dishes, knowing they will also be scrumptious."

  • "A couple of my friends & I came to Amis for brunch this past Sunday. Everything was absolutely phenomenal! Our server, Derek, was really great & very knowledgeable of the menu. I would definitely recommend the Rigatoni and the Tiramisu! But you can't go wrong with anything! Thanks"

  • "two couples on a sunday night. both men loved sal's sunday night supper. delicious sausage, spectacular meatballs and perfect al dente pasta served with an amazing garlic bread. my wife had fried grouper, crispy on the outside but not overcooked. I helped myself to some and it was delicious. my friend's wife had bucatini with jalapeno. the plates were polished when we were done."

  • "This evening we decided to have a meal of small plates, of which there are many to choose from. My wife decided to ask our server to choose three plates for her after opening with Amis Punch and I the Bell's Java Stout. Our friendly server suggested Veal Tongue, Arancini with short rib ragu, and Bufula Mozzarella. I added Swordfish Meatballs and Fried Sweetbreads. We shared all and found the servers tasting menu delightful. All was topped off with the awesome Olive Oil Torte and Rice Pudding that never disappoints. Service was spot on as usual even as the dinner service became quite busy on this Friday night."

  • "This was the first, and last, time I will have brunch here. I ordered the waffle. It tasted like one of those frozen ones you put in a toaster. It was dry and tough like cardboard. Go to Chayya for real waffles. My companion had scrambled eggs that he said were medicore at best. We also ordered a bread basket. Like the waffle, every item was astoundingly dry. The muffin with chocolate made me think I was eating saw dust. Service was professional. The tables were set close enough to listen in on the conversations at the tables next to us -- not ideal in my opinion"

  • "It pains me to write this, But our recent meal at Amis left much to be desired. The atmosphere is fun, upbeat, but noisy. The food lackluster. As a huge fan of the Vetri restaurants, I was prepared to be wowed, I was not. Started with swordfish meatballs( pass on these), mortadella with hazelnut honey, and buffalo mozzarella with persimmon. The mortadella was 4 slices of deli meat with the honey drizzled on top, boring and unattractive. The mozzarella had no taste and also not presented well. We then moved on to the pappardelle, which I do not believe came out of a Vetri kitchen, it was very ordinary. Finished with a special duck breast, which at least was medium rare, but left with a large layer of fat. My advice, stick with Osteria."

  • "We enjoy sitting at the Chef's Bar for dinner before a show. Since we are often there early, the pace in the kitchen is slow and we are able to chat with the staff. It's fun to watch the dishes coming together and we often make our menu selections based on what we see leaving the kitchen. As the evening moves along and the restaurant fills up, the pace in the kitchen quickens and moves like a well-oiled machine. This week we enjoyed two of the duck specials -- the duck egg appetizer and the duck ragu fettucini, both were excellent. We have already made our next reservation for an evening when we don't need to watch the clock because of show tickets."

  • "there were 4 in our party. Everything we ordered was great. The almod dusted sweetbreads were off he charts. Sals meatballs and fried cauliflower rounded out the apps, all were excellent. Entres included the lamb shoulder, pork shank, roasted monkfish and pappardelle with smoked guanciale and parsnips, again, all excellent, esp the lamb and pappardelle. Highly recommended place."

  • "Tables for two were very close together. Apps (Sals meatballs and Swordfish meatballs) were very good but entrees(especially pasta with swordfish and eggplant fries) just ok. Felt rushed but service was attentive. Least favorite of the Vetri owned restaurants."

  • "This is one of my favorite places to dine in the city, and it did not disappoint when I brought some friends there for a birthday celebration. Lindsay, our waitress, is a sweetheart and has perfect timing. The bucatini with jalapeno and almonds is always a favorite but we gobbled up everything we ordered including Sal's meatballs and the imported bufala ricotta."
