Diner Reviews
  • "My wife, daughter and I wanted to go out for a late dinner and the girls liked the tapas menu we saw on the web site. We ordered 6 different dishes which were fantastic including some things we hadn't tried before. The waitress was helped answer our questions, was attentive without being intruding and we left satisfied. The bar area was energetic but wasn't uncomfortable for us in the dining area. This was a concern going in since my daughter is 12. Overall a wonderful choice!"

  • "Different seasonal items, loved the mimosa/bloody mary and grilled cheese stations. Didn't love the strawberry mint fizz."

  • "I had brunch with some friends last Saturday morning at Americana~ this is the third time we have gotten together here. We enjoyed the upbeat atmosphere that our server contributed to. The mimosa bar is nice!"

  • "Our waitress, Jen, was awesome. Even tho we gad a large group, she kept up on drinks, remving plates, , etc. She made us all happy we got her area."

  • "Brunch smorgasbord will suit every palate in your group. Waffle bread pudding reason alone to go. Then add killer hash, made-to-order grilled cheese bar (love the Fanny Pack), And the Bloody Mary bar - they've thought of everything! No hovercraft waitstaff pushing to turn table, either."

  • "The crab dip is very good, has a little kick to it. The main dishes are large potions, could easily split meals."

  • "The service was thoughtful and friendly without being over done. The food was good and enjoyed the new tastes. It was however, over seasoned for my taste. I am not a smoker and in come cases the seasoning was overpowering. The hummus plate description didn't match the actual plate. Too little artichoke and the onions were not included in the description (I don't eat onions); the hummus was very good. Still hungry for artichokes, we added the braised artichoke plate which was outstanding."

  • "What a great and diversified menu. The Lamb Skewers were super. The Miso Noodles were magnificent and the wife had vegetarian Lasagna that was very good. Thanks Open Table for mentioning places we had never been."

  • "Our group of 6 was seated in the upper deck, which was much quieter than the bar area. We made 5:30 reservations so that we could make a 7:30 show at the Civic Center. I was pleased that we had ample time to eat without feeling rushed...the food/service was paced well, and we were finished in good time to drive down to the Civic Center. If I were to eat at Americana during summer months, I would not hesitate to walk to the Civic Center. I wish the skywalk extended that far west."

  • "Our party of 6 had a great time at Americana's brunch for my birthday. The bacon was the wonderful, crispy kind right around the noon rush and not as crispy when we went up for seconds. They didn't have my favorite dish this time, chicken parmesan, but they added a new item: chicken and spinach stuffed crepes, which were to die for and are now my new favorite item by far. They even brought out an adorable mini birthday cake to help me celebrate! Service was great, as usual, but the music was a painful mix of early 90s "hits.""

  • "This was my second time dining at Americana for dinner. Our most recent experience was not as good as our first one. Overall experience was a positive one, just lacking in service at certain points during the evening. This could have been due to the "holiday" since it was the day after Valentine's Day. However, neither my husband or I enjoy having to flag down a waitress, who is in the vicinity & could have easily stopped by our table or at least observed that there were empty drink glasses. There was also a big lag between our appetizer & entrees. Food was delicious and enjoyable, not disappointing at all but nothing "rave" worthy. Overall a good experience and we will be back, perhaps for brunch."

  • "Great serving staff. Very energetic and friendly. Good presentation was the best I've seen in a long time. Wasn't rushed thru our meal or made to feel like they were just trying to turn our table."

  • "The wait to even get 'Hot food' was ridiculous. Food was good but they need to come up with a better layout so you don't have to wait in line for 20 mins to get brunch food."

  • "It was my boyfriends first Bombshell Brunch and he was bummed about having to dress up on a Sunday. Sunday's are usually sweatpants days at our house. He threw on a t-shirt and pair of jeans and off we went. When we arrived, the BF looked around and saw people dressed up and dressed down. " You know", he says to me " this place is so laid back that you can wear a suit or t-shirt. I dig that". Well, I dig it too. It was great. The food, the service, even the all you can drink Mamosa and Bloody Mary bar."

  • "This was our first visit to Americana. We were seated upstairs, first ones up there for dinner at 4:45. I was a little nervous thinking the site would forget we were up there. It almost got to the point I was beginning to wonder if they DID forget, several minutes had passed, and our drink orders hadn't yet been taken, and no one else had been seated upstairs. Then our waiter magically appeared and after that everything was fine. The food was very good. I had the loaded mac and cheese with shrimp, the husband prime rib. He stated it was some of the best prime rib he had had. The vibe was very relaxed, the noise level just right. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and knew when to appear. I will visit this restaurant again."

  • "I took my son's 1.5 & 5 here for a Valentine's date and we had a great time I only had one lady seem irritated by my little one making some noise but the food and service were great. ."

  • "I took my girl here for Valentine's day dinner. We had reservations at 6, but due to a traffic accident we got there late. I called ahead to the restaurant to let them know, and they told us that our reservation was good until 7:45, when there was another party scheduled for that table. Once we got to Americana, the service was absolutely fantastic. The hosts and the server didn't even mention the fact that we were late for our reservation and gave us top-notch service. While the food was nothing amazing, it was certainly still delicious. I would come back to this place for the service alone!"

  • "The service was phenomenal and quick despite it being one of the busiest days of the year: Valentine's Day. I had the fried cheese ravioli with a cup of tomato soup. It was one of the best meals I've had in Des Moines. Wonderful. I will be there again soon."

  • "I love Americana for Happy Hour - great spot with awesome specials (their happy hour offers a lot of choices, unlike many other HH places). Great downtown spot for professionals to grab a drink after work! This time I was there with a work group. Service was excellent, food was great as always, our waitress was attentive and on top of everything. Great experience, as always."

  • "If you are looking for a unique menu, trendy scene, and tasty food; look no further than Americana. We had a great time munching on everything from the grilled cheese bar to breakfast crepes. Don't forget to save room for the mimosa and bloody mary bar."

  • "We had a large group that held a reservation in the bar for dessert only. The restaurant was very accommodating in changes to our schedule and the space was appropriate. The bar area is very loud so we had difficulty carrying on a conversation with each other. Desserts were very good and they had hot coffee. Unfortunately, our server had many other tables and missed a few details like one person's dessert and another's coffee order."

  • "Americana was an amazing choice for our dinner! We had a large group reservation and they were extremely accommodating! Their food is phenomenal especially the crab ragoon dip! The ambiance might have been my favorite part tho! It is a gorgeous renovated older building! I definitely recommend this restaurant and will be back!"

  • "The food has been wonderful every time I've been to Americana (for lunch and for dinner). It seems that they put a lot of work into changing their menu and keeping the food choices fresh and exciting. Three of our group of five had the Thai Tacos -- an interesting twist on a taco and very tasty. The duck filling was my favorite, although the pulled pork was good, too (I just like duck better than pulled pork, both were nicely prepared). The service was attentive and friendly, the food delicious. It was a bright spot in a blustery and incredibly cold winter day! I appreciate that we could make our reservations online. It's a nice option."

  • "The western part of Des Moines' downtown is known as the Western Gateway, and Americana restaurant is a perfect place to experience this blooming area of the city. Large windows face the sculpture park across the street, visible both night and day. The staff is welcoming, and there's a terrific wine list, specialty cocktails, and eclectic menu to entice your taste buds. We had the prime rib special that is available on Saturday nights -- an excellent choice. The meat loaf selected at a prior visit was NOT to our taste; spicy and unusual. The birthday cake dessert comes in decorated as a mini layer cake topped with a candle and souvenir, large enough to share -- a fun ending to a special evening."
