American Grocery RestaurantAlways Amazing !My wife and I have been frequent visitors to AGR since it opened. AGR is always worth a visit. Over the years , we have submitted our comments and frankly , our dining experience is always the same: SIMPLY SUPERB . Our last visit was for the Mother's day brunch. Quail and waffles incredible; Huevos Rancheros beyond belief. For and incredible experience of flavors go to AGR ! Your sophisticated tastes will be satiated , I promise.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved it!Love the idea of locally grown/produced ingredients. I had the paella, and it was just wonderful. Service, ambience, and food were outstanding. We'll definitely be back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMChef Driven vs Corporate DrivenWe went to Greenville based on a national article that described it as the new culinary destination in the Southeast. After eating at various recommended restaurants, it was so nice to eat at a restaurant that was owned by a Chef and not part of a multi-unit Corporate chain.
The space is warm and intimate. Drinks and wine list are excellent. Our server,Justin was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I found the app section to be so interesting,I only had apps. My charcuterie plate was obviously made in house, my sweetbreads were fire grilled which gave them a very interesting flavor, yet still moist. Our favorite dish was a deep fried hard boiled egg. OMG...
My wife had the soft shell crabs over grits and they were also wonderful.
Try it !!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMlovelyMy husband And I thoroughly Enjoyed Our Experience. The Atmosphere Was Quaint. The Food Was Extraordinary. Our Cocktails Were Exceptional. Service Was Great. Our Table Was In A Quiet Corner As We Had Requested. Are Eager To Go Back With Friends And Family.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWould have been 5 stars butI had been wanting to try this restaurant for quite a while and am extremely glad I did.We tried their tasting plate menu which was interesting to say the least. Ox tongue?? OK, I'm willing to try.The food came in smaller servings- four courses The salad was OK, It was tasty. Next course of scallops on basil risotto was absolutely amazing. Grilled over hickory, they were extremely tasty.Next came the biggest surprise of the night- ox tongue which was beautifully presented but the taste sensation...thats what threw both of us. This was an absolutely spectacular tasting sensation created by a chef who very obviously knows what he is doing..Desert of fruit was tasty
Now for the only downside. Wines were terrible,. Bad choices -mismatched5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMStill amazed! We dine at AGR 5-6 times per year. Food is so thoughtfully and tastefully put together. Appetizers are truly amazing! And the sommelier picks for wine are always so fine.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good food and nice ambiance.Very good food and nice ambiance. Can be a little pricey, but I would highly recommend AGR.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst visit to American Grocery.First visit to American Grocery. We dined earlier than normal due to theatre tickets. Everything was terrific, food, service, wine, special cocktails. Look forward to returning.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMoutstanding food, i have eatenoutstanding food, i have eaten at numerous gourmet resturants around the country and live in an area that has numerous outstanding resturants, American Grocery is one of the best meals i have ever had.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a wonderful dinner atHad a wonderful dinner at American Grocery on Saturday night. Our waiter was excellent and answered numerous questions regarding the specialty cocktails and menu items.
Definitely try the Sweet Potato biscuits - the bacon adds a really unique taste! Also loved the halibut and my husband thought the steak was one of the best he's had in Greenville! I tried the Smoking Barrel cocktail and it was definitely intersting!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent experience. We hadExcellent experience. We had to wait for our reservation about 30 minutes but they comped our first drink, good gesture and worth the wait. The food and service was outstanding. Highly recommend.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMA little pricey but the foodA little pricey but the food was excellent. We had the 4 course set meal and thoroughly enjoyed everything. Will definitely go back again in the future for a special occassion. Service was superb, and the waiter was very knowledgable on the wine.
Overall great addition to the numerous fantastic restaurants in Greenville4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative, delicious, and fun.Creative, delicious, and fun. Go with an open mind, as the menu changes daily. You won't be disappointed. We loved American Grocery!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMWe took guests from the NortheastWe took guests from the Northeast to American Grocery on Wednesday night. Our table was ready for us, service was excellent, and the food was hot and delicious. We all thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and look forward to returning. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys well presented food, a unique menu, and impecable service.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food but inflexible on menuWe had not eaten here since right after they opened. The food is very good and nicely presented. Definitely one of the better spots for very well prepared food. My gripe is that they are adamantly opposed to making any changes, such as substituting one vegetable for another. I find this frustrating since it seems trivial and while I may really want to try a certain dish, the side may be a non-starter for me. As with most of the partrons in a restaurant like this, I know my food and know what I like and do not like; and do not need a chef -- no matter how good -- playing mother and insisting I stick with their conception.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMAmerican Grocery Restaurant,American Grocery Restaurant, or AGR for those in the know, is a great place to find something a little different, superbly prepared with local ingredients. It is a bit pricier than some other places (but not so much so that you can't go for a special night out every now and again), especially as portions are sized just right to allow you to have an appetizer, main, AND dessert - all of which you will definitely want to have. We sat at a quiet table by a window overlooking the street, which is summer would be a great way to peoplewatch as you eat. They have some unique and extremely tasty cocktails, an ecclectic selection of beers, and a great wine selection (even the "by the glass" selection is outstanding). Try the wine pairings, too!4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWhile AGR only serves twiceWhile AGR only serves twice a year, their menu is as exciting as their dinner menu. The chef's culinary style is amazing and , as always, is a superb delight. AGR has got to be the # 1 restaurant in Greenville.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent dining experienceExcellent dining experience with local produce. Creative and unique dishes, skilled staff, excellent service. Would highly recommend this establishment.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMFoodies, Dine Here!A memorable dining experience! Delicious, local and organic food in a beautiful restaurant with a knowledgeable server, unique wine list and proprietors who loves serving people and making them happy, costs more than eating at a chain steak or seafood restaurant. The prices were in keeping with this genre of fine dining establishment. Will return next trip to Greenville. When you go, leave room for a delicious dessert and after dinner drink!3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experience in all aspectsWell worth the time to try. Waitstaff is very well trained and can answer questions about wines that very few can. Food was outstanding as well as creative. The beef tongue was a surprise favorite dish of the evening. Wow.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat ServiceWe had a fantastic time at AGR. We chose to go with the 4 course prix fixe and chose to include the wine pairings. The wine pairing were perfectly matched and enhanced the meal exceptionally. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. Even when I realized that we weren't going to have enough time to make it to the show, he jumped on it and quickly got the desserts out so that we didn't miss it. Definitely top notch service (I don't remember his name but he had a great mustache).
I had never had beef tongue before so I didn't know what to expect, but I definitely did NOT expect something as wonderful as that! If you choose an entrée I would definitely recommend it.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGrowing up in Greenville inGrowing up in Greenville in the late 60's-70's there were few if any decent restaurants to choose from and the part of town where American Grocery is located was no-man's land. Today Greenville has an incredible selection of great dining establishments including American Grocery. Dinner was interesting "in a good way" if you are open to a different take on dishes. The Pork Belly appetizer was outstanding. Fried devil egg was fun. Wild King Salmon was cooked to perfection. Darlene who runs the restaurant with her husband John hit upon something special in a truly vibrant and exciting new part of town. Very nice wine selection but that night I stuck with the Palm beer.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMSophisticated palateFood is above and beyond excellent. Very sophisticated menu.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMThe freshest local ingredientsThe freshest local ingredients help to create a meal on par with any in the Greenville area. This is the quintessential farm-to-table restaurant.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat service and even better food.Great service and even better food. The waiter was very knowledgable and helpful. I had him explain several items on the menu and he really helped me make informed decisions. I had the braised beef tongue and my wife had trout and both dishes were outstanding. For a nice casual atmosphere and delicious dinners I would recommend the American Grocery Restaurant to everyone. AGR is not your average restaurant, they are really a cut above.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWe always enjoy American Grocery. We always enjoy American Grocery. The rabbit is superb!3/8/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful, unique, fresh foodWonderful, unique, fresh food and an awesome cocktail menu, especially if you like bourbon!3/1/2013 12:00:00 AMAMERICAN GROCERY IS A SPECIAL PLACEThe food at American Grocery is of high quality and imaginatively designed, prepared and presented. Locally available products are emphasized and result in interesting and enjoyable regional meals. Service is professional, courteous and responsive. The restaurant itself is a pleasant, attractive place with tables comfortably spaced. We consider American Grocery one of the most distinctive restaurants we have ever been to and we do a fair amount of traveling into different parts of the country. On our trip south to Georgia this year, we made a considerable detour on the way back home north to visit Greenville just to have dinner at American Grocery.2/23/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything we had was absolutelyEverything we had was absolutely outstanding. The wait staff was so helpful, and obviously proud of everything the kitchen produced.
We had a wonderful time.2/16/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was excellent! My husbandFood was excellent! My husband and I both enjoyed the fried deviled egg. Although I like that its a small simple space my husband thought it was too small and not very romantic. Would definitely go back!2/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst time there was on Valentin'sFirst time there was on Valentin's Day. Had a fixed menu with great options. My husband and I each ordered different food choices so we could taste more dishes. All were excellent!
We are moving to the area and will be back.2/14/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent, rare gem!We visited AGR for the first time on Valentine's Day when we enjoyed the V-Day 4-course "special event" dinner. Free parking along the street just 1 block away was no problem, but there were also few $5 pay parking lots. The restaurant is decorated beautifully with craftsman-style appointments. The lighting includes a few harsh "spotlights" but those are high in the ceiling and not obtrusive. The service was cheerful and our waiter was happy to adapt to our needs. The food was superb. The dishes were well-planned, beautifully presented, and very flavorful.2/14/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything was very good.Everything was very good. Didn't like not being able to change menu items (add or subtract). Realize this is the way the chef likes to run his restaurant. Feel I am the customer and should have this option. Have eaten in numerous high end restaurants in large cities and have the option to change the way dish is prepared.
That said, we had very enjoyable evening & will return.2/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSurprised by tongueThank you, AG for another memorable meal! The wine pairings with the each course were especially memorable. My favorite course from the chef's menu was the trout. Excellent! I was also very impressed with the rich flavor and texture of the cow's tongue. I never thought I'd eat tongue again after being forced to eat it as a child, but this dish was a complete surprise. Delicious.2/8/2013 12:00:00 AMAmerican Grocery is one ofAmerican Grocery is one of our favorites. We've dined there 4 or 5 times, most recently during Restaurant week. selection was excellent, as was the food.1/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat attention to detailGreat attention to detail from service to craft cocktails and interesting and delicious food! We will be back.1/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSimply the Best !!!AGR is the pinnacle dinning experience. The cuisine is an incredible blend of flavors that never disappoint and always excite the palate. The menu changes frequently and , thus, provides the regular AGR diner the ultimate evening of pleasure on every occasion.
My compliments to the chef, sommelier , and staff for a memorable evening. My wife and I have enjoyed AGR since it opened and will definitely continue to go to the best restaurant in Greenville.1/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a very delicious dinner,We had a very delicious dinner, with assistance from our waiter, who was very knowledgeable about the menu items. This is our favorite restaurant in Greenville, as the menu always has interesting, inventive, and different specialties.1/2/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways excellent food andAlways excellent food and service. Somewhat limited menu selection for non-meat eaters. Otherwise, innovative dishes with local emphasis. A favorite.12/27/2012 12:00:00 AMOne of Greenville's BestThis place has become my wife and my favorite. The menu is full of locally raised meat and vegetables. The Caw Caw Creek pork belly appetizer is fantastic. Everything has alway been prepared perfectly. Great drink menu. As a bourbon drinker, I am happy just to sit at the bar and sample single barrel and infused (smoke, bacon) bourbons. Bartender is friendly, too. Probably a little pricey, but honestly, I don't mind paying for a quality dinner experience. You can have one here.12/19/2012 12:00:00 AM
