A word from American Cupcake Restaurant
American Cupcake is a restaurant and "carnival lounge" creating fantastical twists on comfort food classics. AC brings an imaginative style to Union Street, with an inventive food menu and Willy Wonka-meets-Space Odyssey interior. Think white patent leather banquettes, color-changing "gumball lights" spanning the ceiling, fried chicken and Lone Star beer.

Dinner, dessert, and "candy cocktails" are served every night and until midnight on weekends. Brunch now served on weekends! Try AC's most famous dish, Red Velvet Fried Chicken, or newer creations such as Candy Apple Ribs and Pink Popcorn Shrimp. Sip from an eclectic craft beer and wine list, "cupcake flights" (3 mini cupcakes paired with 3 tastes of wine or beer), boozy milkshakes, and candy-infused libations.

American Cupcake is also a sweet spot for private parties and celebrations of all kinds!

The Staff was SO FRIENDLY!!! We had 8 kids and 15 adults and we took up the half the place. We enjoyed the food and the kids were amazed at the "Mad Tea Party" treat at the end of their dinner. The adults, as well as myself, enjoyed the drinks and dinner and the atmosphere was very enjoyable. Every time the lights changed the kids would say whooooaaaa. Totally fun for kids and adults.

We wanted to go someplace that wasn't a mess on mother's day ,would have something for every one and be fun! WE met all three goals. Bubble gum cupcakes and shots! The ribs melted in your mother and the cocktails a lot of fun, we will definitely go again. And parking a breeze. The attention paid to us was perfect as we gawked at the shop. I just want one in the East Bay!

I heard of this place because of Urban Daddy, and it was adorable. Really small, but very clearly a neighborhood gem. LOVED the decor! And Amy, the General Manager, modeled the same great service as the rest of the staff. All my questions were answered courteously, service was quick and efficient, and I had a great time. I definitely look forward to returning!

I was at American Cupcake on Mother's Day with my wife and our 2 year-old daughter. The food was ok, but nothing very special; the cupcakes we had for dessert were very good, though. What I didn't like at all was the service. The place was almost empty and we still had long waits at times, as well as the server trying to take our plates when we weren't finished. It was weird. The decoration is nice, especially if you go with children, but the tables are too close to each other and so it doesn't feel spacious at all. The above explains why I recommend their cupcakes, but not their service or dining room.

We made reservations here for Easter Dinner 2014. We were asked for a $30 credit card deposit to hold the reservation. (we have never had this request from any restaurant.) We got there on time and there was not one other person in the restaurant. Didn't understand why they needed a deposit. We were there for their two signature dishes. Red Velvet coated fried chicken, which was good but tasted as if it were sitting awhile, very dry. The candy apple ribs were good, but not exceptional. We did have the mac and cheese lollipops and they were good. Eating in an empty restaurant is not fun, especially when all the help is busy cleaning up and closing the restaurant.

If this restaurant were a movie it would be equal parts Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It has a strange disco carnival motif that is kind of garish and still compelling. Seems like a favorite among women, saw lots of girl groups having wine and cupcakes. The food was good, red velvet chicken is the thing to get but I liked the fried pickle chips as well. Recommend it for groups and partying girl groups especially.

If my 3 and 5 year-old daughter got to choose a location for Brunch, this would be it. Every time. It's clearly a cupcake joint that also serves food to pay the rent, but the food is quite good. Decor is more Japanese anime than French villa, but it suits the restaurant perfectly. The kids' eyes lit up when the cupcake pancakes came out - perfect! And we didn't have to worry about shhhhhushing them the whole time. Not exactly haute cuisine, but my trio of eggs benedict was very good. My wife's banana French toast was also tasty. Everything is a little (ok, a lot) on the sweet side, but that is to be expected. Best of all, the kids really liked it. Sweet!

I am from out of town, but a few years ago while visiting San Francisco, my family discovered this adorable and delicious cupcake shop that is kind of mixed with a bar. I knew that in two years I would want to come back to celebrate my 21st birthday to enjoy one of their candy cocktails. They definitely did not disappoint. Four of us went for cocktails, dinner, and cupcakes. The staff was great! They were energetic, easygoing and made the 21st birthday experience so much fun! I can't wait to go back next time I'm in the city.

Food was wonderful and the service was even better. We were only in SF for one day and almost missed our chance to dine here. We called ahead and told Colton that we were going to be late for our reservations and may not get there until 15 minutes before closing. He said it would not be a problem and delivered our order as soon as we arrived. The cupcakes were also amazing!

What a fun place to celebrate my friend's birthday at brunch. The ambience automatically puts everyone in a playful mood as do the clever and delicious cocktails. Drunken ballerina (tiny ballerina doll included), champagne with pop rocks rim, beer and cupcake pairings? There are so many things I want to try here so I will have to return. I want to try the cupcake and wine pairings and baby back ribs. The staff was amazing. Kristina was practically a part of the gang by the end of our meal and Zach didn't blink twice at special requests.

I heard about this place through a friend, I seen the photos that he took and was sucked in; it was my birthday week so I though it'd be awesome to go to American Cupcake. I was extremely disappointed when I got my cotton candy cupcake, which did NOT have a stick of cotton candy pointing through, I let it slide...the cupcake itself was extremely horrible, I thought it'd get better so I kept eating it when I finally had enough, I couldn't eat it. The fried oreos were good but also disappointing because they were really tiny and small, and there were only 3 of them...definitely not worth 6 dollars, I could buy a pack of oreos for cheaper. My friends ordered the candy apple ribs which were good but tasted nothing like candy apples.

This restaurant did not disappoint. The red velvet fried chicken and the RVFC sandwich were both good. The portions filled us up. My husband ordered the tater tots also and they were very addicting as u could not eat just one. The cupcake split was so large. The staff must have had fun decorating it as it had alot of whipped cream and sprinkles. The atmosphere was great. The service was helpful and attentive. I loved the decor and atmosphere. I would definately come again and have already recommend AC to others!

The food was good. The menu ranged from standard to Willy Wonka-esque. The pluses: really good cupcakes and good service. The biggest minus: the decor is abominable. The sugar-white furniture and shifting colored lights are great if it's a bar at 2 am. But to eat breakfast it was annoying bordering on nauseating. I'd recommend the place only if you eat outside.

This was my second visit to American Cupcake and I was very disappointed. I went with a party of four at 2:30 on a Saturday only to find that our menu choices had to be limited to the brunch items. Previously, I had the red velvet fried chicken with the mashed potatoes and it was divine. On this visit however, I ordered the red velvet chicken and waffles and was served two tiny, almost burnt pieces of dry chicken and an ordinary waffle. Not to mention that the table service was very slow- even though there was only one other table seated while we were there. The only saving grace, in my opinion, was the salted caramel cupcake. I found it moist and rich in flavor. This restaurant is very cute and has the potential to be amazing.

This place is trying too hard to be funky and too many things all at once. It just comes off as sad and really dorky. The food is OK, but nothing to get excited about -- and the signature red velvet fried chicken totally blows. Lastly, if they are going to call themselves American Cupcake and play up the whole "carnival" atmosphere (really stupid, by the way), then they should probably learn how to make a decent cupcake.

It definitely didn't blow my mind but it was worth a try. Service was attentive, nothing extraordinary. All of the pics I'd seen of this place made it look MUCH bigger. I took my husband for his birthday, using a Gilt City brunch voucher. I guess it was played up in my mind because of all the unique sweets and creative goodies. When we got there, I was immediately deflated by the hallway-sized shop, children running around screaming, and lack of host at the door. There were three people working and it took them at least 5 minutes to acknowledge us. However, the trio of Benedicts was good, bacon being the best thing on my plate. It was definitely not the experience I'd expected, but certainly a cute little place to have lunch in the city. Not someplace for a special occasion, unless you're 10 years old or you rent the place for the night!
