Diner Reviews
  • "Lemon tart was stellar, but, of 2 apps, a salad, and 2 entrees, only 1 app was notably good. Asked to describe the roast chicken with morel sauce and bread pudding, our (not brand new) awkward student waiter said "fresh, moist, and [main emphasis] the biggest portion of any of the entrees." The (dry, bitter, chalky) bread pudding turned out to contain more chicken liver than bread. The waiter earnestly congratulated me on being the first to correctly guess the contents (not a hint of irony). My wife suggested he tell the kitchen it might be a good idea to mention the liver as an ingredient on the menu. He runs off, then dutifully returns with: "Chef thought that if they mentioned it, people might not order the dish." Crunchy frog anyone?"

  • "Our meal was absolutely fabulous. They were kind enough to sit us by the kitchen so our niece, who was with us for a cooking class and to celebrate her 12th birthday, was able to watch what was going in the kitchen. She was delighted when greeted with a Happy Birthday and was so happy to see it written on her dessert plate. From beginning to end a perfect meal!"

  • "We were not knowing what to expect at a school enviroment. The food was good except for my dessert which was just not what I had expected. the waitress seemed a little akward in her position but overall wasnt good. Little things like she didnt ask if we wanted coffee when she took the dessert order. then never came back to se if we wanted more coffee. overall it was an enjoyable evening and would go back."

  • "Wonderful experience meeting the students and seeing them doing their best to please. Definitely going back..."

  • "The service was excellent, the ambience uplifting, but the food was a problem: The fish was over cooked, the lamb chops over salted and a bit less rare than expected, the rolls rich but perhaps also to salty, the deserts more artistically plated than palette pleasing. The CIA has done better in the past - and we expect will do better in the future. Still an adventure."

  • "My first CIA restaurant experience and I was not dissappointed! The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. The CIA should be very proud of their students who did an amazing job cooking and serving us foodies."

  • "The main course and appetizers here are particularly delicious with a beautiful blend of farm fresh meat and produce in interesting and delicious combinations. The dessert, while it looked spectacular tasted horrible! My advice is to savor the wonderful mains and bread and skip the dessert or pickup an ice cream on the way home!"

  • "The food was mixed. Appetizers were relatively good, but overpriced for what they were. Main courses were better (short rib was very good). Dessert was disappointing. We tried ricotta cheesecake. I don't like things particularly sweet, but this was missing some sugar. Service was friendly, although waiter seemed nervous (he was not new)."

  • "Two steps above other good restaurants, with some exceptions. The dandelions side was too tough to chew. Inedible. They should use ordinary vegetables that can be eaten. The peach desert was clever and creative, but contained almost no actual peach. It would have been better if they included some real fruit."

  • "We had gone with great expectations. We understood that the waiting staff was in the learn mode and that was ok with us. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming. The lamb was very fatty, and the steaks(ribeye) were not cuttable with the knives provided. One individual indicated the steak was tough. We thought the appetizers and desserts were terrific but in the case of the appetizers, skimpy portions. Would not have been a concern had the entrees been better. In all, a pretty pricey evening for a dining experience that was only so so."

  • "I was at the American bounty on Tuesday with my son. The soup and salad that my son and I ordered was excellent. What I was surprised at was the entrees. They were very high in taste, but very low in quantity. They looked much like a light appetizer. Very disappointed in this. If I did not have the soup, and my son the salad, we would have left feeing hungry. I ordered the scallops and my son the beef. Very skimpy portions. With the three scallops ( thought there would be at least four for the price) came a puree and maybe a one inch in size asparagus and maybe one small slice of a mushroom. The beef had bliss potatoes that you needed a magnifying glass to see. Again the food was good, the portions were not, especially for the price."

  • "Being the Culinary Institute of America, I had high expectations for the quality and variety food that would be enjoyed. Unfortunately, we found the menu and the food to be fairly ordinary and no better than can be enjoyed at many restaurants in local communities. The staff were very knowledgable and friendly, but the food was disappointing, except for the crab salad with gazpacho, which was quite good!"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at the American Bounty Restaurant. There were 6 of us and we had heard wonderful things about the CIA but had never been there before. The Restaurant is beautifully appointed and the setting is gorgeous amidst the stunning campus of the CIA. The waiting area/bar is welcoming and cozy, the main restaurant is elegantly charming. The servers were pleasant and efficient. Our favorite wine was on the wine list and the food was outstanding. Most of us had different fish dishes. The salmon was superb, the appetizers and salads were delicious and dessert was yummy. I almost forgot to mention the hot rolls fresh from the oven. All in all it was a dining experience to remember. I can't wait to go back again."

  • "The Lamb chops were excellent, red as they should be, and flavorful. The sword fish was even better. Our waitress was a 20 year old woman ( I didn't believe it when I asked) In my 67 years I have NEVER had a wait person of this fine quality. Extremely professional, attentive, and knowledgeable. Her partner, a 19 year old man as good as any waiter I have had. While I was lucky to have them, I am sure that this level of service is taught, and expected by the professors whose students work at THIS RESTAURANT."

  • "This was my first time at American Bounty, and I was definitely impressed. I usually dine at Bocuse, but decided to change it up and give American Bounty a try. First, my boyfriend was running late for our 8 PM reservation, so I called in ahead of time telling them that we might be 30 minutes late. No problem, they told me they can seat me at 8:30, but they were upfront telling me that because 8:30 is their last seating, I would not be able to be accomodated if I were any later than that. I definitely appreciate the no frills straight forward, but still cordial notice. As the dinner progressed, the service was even more welcoming, and the food delicious even for my picky standards. I will definitely be dining here again!"

  • "Had a great time with a four course meal. The food was great delicious and prepared with care and great balance of flavors. The servers were informed and cordial. Was not pressured to finish so they could flip the table."

  • "Starving when arrived for 8:15 reservation (all that was available) and disappointed to be told our table was not ready. Manager however interceded and showed hostess how to move around tables so we and other arriving diners could be seated. Goat cheese appetizer was ok, not much cheese but very flaky tart. Shrimp appetizer was tasty. Husbands sea bass entree was cooked well, however I wasn't asked how I liked the wild salmon prepared. It was underdone for my taste but I chose not to send it back; the corn pesto sauce accompanying it was delicious. We were able to see the pastry chefs from our vantage point which was fun. Students very accommodating. Menu could have highlighted the local farm sources for theme."

  • "This was our first visit to CIA Hyde Park - we had dined at CIA St. Helena a couple of years ago and liked it. This campus was so impressive and American Bounty was lovely. Our server struggled and there was some language barrier - she had to be very new - they did not ask for feedback or suggestions so I will leave it at that. The food was good - probably just OK for the price. Very fresh greens in the salads. Our bread was dry and so was the replacement. The chicken with morel mushrooms was the tastiest dish of our group - brined and a great sauce. The lamb chops were well prepared also. The temperatures, presentations, timing were the details that kept things a notch from the top. As students, I am sure the experience varies"

  • "Took my daughter here after a college tour of Marist. The campus is stunningly beautiful as was the July evening that we had our reservation. Everything was exceptional except for the unbelievably STRANGE student waiter who served us. He did not have any interest in speaking to us and seemed as though he was working for his first time ever as a waiter. However he told us he was graduating in 2 weeks. He was completely unavailable to us and thankfully his "boss" or teacher saw my look of "help us please" and came over to ask what was wrong. After he introduced himself and begged us to please identify the problems to him that we were having the rest of the dinner went smoothly."

  • "We have heard good things about CIA for many years, and were not disappointed. The restaurant itself was lovely and quiet, and has a beautiful setting, on the Hudson. The food was outstanding, and we were impressed with the service given by our young waiter. There were a few small mishaps, but these were not unexpected or bothersome, as we know this is a school, and the students are all learning and perfecting their craft(s)."

  • "Appetizers: Some are just too small; this is supposed to be the American restaurant, not the French! Entrees: One member of our party had the lamb, another the short rib. Both reported as excellent (I tasted the short rib & regretted not ordering it!). I ordered the striped bass; unfortunately it was raw in the center & had to be returned. It went back to the kitchen to be further cooked. An apology was offered (but nothing more). Desserts: Good, but like the appetizers, more French than American in size & style."

  • "Our lunch was very good as always, however, one salad and our entrees were disappointing. We both had the scallops and they seemed to be overcooked. The caesar salad was served with puff pastry which didn't compliment the dressing. Much prefer garlic butter croutons."

  • "We had been wanting to eat at the CIA for years and it turned out to be as good as anticipated. Everything we had, from appetizer to dessert, was thoughtfully and imaginatively prepared. We have been to many restaurants throughout the country operated by CIA graduates. Based on our experience the other evening, the future of culinary excellence is looking bright."

  • "CIA-is a venue you must visit because of the ambiance and service. Exciting to be in a restaurant environment where young people are learning culinary and service skills. Quality of food was outstanding, preparation was just ok, but presentation is beautiful and service and attention to detail was excellent. A definite must even if the food was just ok."

  • "Table for 2 was least attractive location in restaurant. Adjacent to staff congregation point. Salt and pepper shakers not removed with meal hardware prior to desert. Wine arrived almost 8 minutes after entree when it was expected just prior to entree. First pour of water tasted strangely of seltzer."

  • "Outstanding Dinner experience. Perfect preparation and presentation of the food. The staff was very attentive and approachable. Will do this again and highly recommend it if you are looking for value for the money. The iPad wine list which can be emailed is a cool feature, I wish the interior of the dining room would be a bit more contemporary as well."

  • "A perfect evening dining experience as my daughter and I celebrated the start of her first term as a student at the Culinary Arts Institute. After a long day of introductory activities (for both of us!) it was nice to have a few final quiet moments together over an excellent meal just to take it all in. The meal and service were both excellent and prompt. Portions were just about perfect - although my daughter chose to have some "bagged" to take to her residence hall which the staff was happy to accommodate. I had to catch a flight and my daughter was exhausted so we chose to save dessert for our next visit!"

  • "As we expected, the food was sensational, freshly and ornately prepared. However, it took an extremely long time to get our entrees and it was obvious that the many of the wait staff were inexperienced and unsure of what to say and do. We were also surprised to find the restaurant half empty, and it stayed that way all evening, even though we were told that our 8pm reservation was the only one available. Overall though, it was a pleasant experience and definitely worth going for the food itself."

  • "CIA is a beautiful campus however the food is disappointing. Our meal of fish and chicken were undercooked. The vegetables were hardly noticable. The portions small but the rolls were delicious. Overall I wanted the experience of dining at CIA but would never go back. Overpriced for the portions they serve."

  • "Students are just beginning their front of the house training so service takes a bit longer than you might expect. For most courses the wait is well worth it. Our desserts were spectacular. All of the food was presented beautifully."

  • "The online booking form for my reservation included a spot for special requests. My entry "vegan, if possible; otherwise, vegetarian." went unanswered. No wonder! There was only one vegetarian option on the entrees for lunch, and no vegan options. Also, the Roasted Beet salad contained exactly two tiny piece of beets, placed as a garnish. It was misleading and disappointing. Vegetarians-- look elsewhere."
