Diner Reviews
  • "David turned '70' the day after his birthday lunch at American Bounty. Everything was special: the choices, the presentation, the service, fhe flavor, the ambiance. It all said YOU ARE SPECIAL TODAY! And our guests were equally pleased. We had a perfect leisurely lunch (over 2 hours) and did not feel rushed. Plenty of conversation and comparing choices. It was worth the tedious ride on Route 9 to get there. We will be back!"

  • "I'm a student at the CIA in the bachelor's program. Even though I was part of the pastry section of the Bounty kitchen in the AOS program, I had not eaten here before. This was my first time dining at American Bounty and it was soo good! The best meal I have had in some time. This is by far my favorite restaurant at the school! I can't wait to come back again."

  • "Unusual selections, artfully presented, and delicious. Service was attentive but not obsequious. Beautiful restaurant, a bit noisy."

  • "The food at American Bounty was delicious. The presentation of all the dishes was stunning and the ambience of the room was lovely. The service that one receives from the staff is attentive but not intrusive. Our dinner was a truly memorable and delightful experience."

  • "I should go back and revise all of my previous OpenTable reviews now that I have dined at American Bounty. I have been fortunate to have many very good restaurant meals, but this meal was in a class by itself. My husband and I had lunch with friends. From beginning to end the experience was excellent. When we entered the building we could smell fresh baked goods. We enjoyed browsing the hallway exhibits and the store while we waited for our friends to arrive. We had a lovely chat with the hostess. The service was attentive and skilled. The menu offered many choices that I wanted to sample. I had the carrot-apple soup, a duck with grains main dish, and chocolate hazlenut cake dessert. Every morsel of food was delicious -- perfectly prepared."

  • "The overall luncheon experience was outstanding. The food preparation and presentation was excellent as was the quality of the ingredients. The service personnel were friendly but professional and took the time to help us understand the different dishes and ingredients that we were not familiar with. Service was prompt but not rushed. The environment was quiet which made it comfortable to carry on a conversation with my companion. Lastly, the price of the meal was very reasonable. We arrived early but were warmly welcomed and were thankful to be seated shortly after we arrived."

  • "I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that American Bounty was so accommodating to gluten free patrons! The gluten free bread and cookies were DELICIOUS! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience at AB. What a wonderful gem to visiting a trip to upstate NY!"

  • "Maybe we were expecting too much but overall just a good rating. We were hoping for more of a try for real fine dining. No specials but I guess the students need to learn how to prepare and serve a set meal. We will try again. Or maybe another one of the on-site restaurants."

  • "We went during restaurant week and were glad we did. Dinner was appetizers of shrimp and clams/fennel salad, entrees of Hudson Valley duck/grilled ribeye, desserts of coconut and pomegranate/rocky road. Everything was superb. The decor is lovely and from some locations it is possible to see what is going on in the kitchen (we could). The service was excellent and the enthusiasm of the students was clear. The restaurant itself is in the main building and there is no view to speak of, but the campus is on a beautiful riverfront location so it might be possible to walk around during daylight hours. We arrived after dark and the one negative was poor signage. Also, it is a short walk from the parking lot to the restaurant."

  • "American Bounty was definitely the best part of our weekend getaway to Poughkeepsie. Highlights of the meal: I loved the kale salad (and I dislike kale!), the wild boar stew (my boyfriend was wild about the light, fluffy dumplings and the amazing onions), the desserts were amazing, but the best part of our meal were the servers - each one of them was friendly, interesting, and funny. Even though we arrived right before the kitchen was closing, we never felt rushed or harried."

  • "I went with a girl friend, it was her first time dining at American Bounty. Our server was nice and extremely attentive! Although both our entrees, my sea bass and her pork chop, had too much pepper. Otherwise, we had a great time!"

  • "Had an amazing lunch. The soups were incredible!!! Fabulous salads and the dessert presentation was over the top! The only criticism is that the Sea Bass entree was just okay - as opposed to everything else we ordered. Overall, an amazing dining experience and can't wait to go back there."

  • "It was a very enjoyable day. I brought my friend there for lunch as it was her 60th birthday and she had never been to the CIA and had always wanted to go; it was all that she anticipated it to be. We sat her the bakery area where she could view the students preparing desserts. "All" students were professional, knowledgeable; friendly and professional. This was my fourth time at the CIA but had never been to the American Bounty restaruant before, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere."

  • "This is second time dining here and whole experience was amazing. I have eaten at all the CIA restaurants in Hyde Park and this one is my favorite. Atmosphere is relaxed. The medely of food, seasonings and herbs is just delightful. Eat bite was a new experience. But it's notba restaurant just for foodies. Portion size is great ( not too big, not to small but just right), and all ifood was just simply American bounty."

  • "I have eaten at American Bounty the times now, and it is always fantastic. The food is exceptional. I highly recommend the duck, scallops and swordfish. The desserts were perfect, I thoroughly enjoyed the white chocolate chestnut. And the service was great."

  • "Better instructions on the campus to parking and the restaurants. It was dark and raining and we had a difficult time finding where we needed to go."

  • "The setting is beautiful, wonderful views of the Hudson and lovely buildings, what a place to study. The staff were very attentive both when we arrived and while we were in the restaurant. We sat near the glass wall of the kitchen so it was interesting to watch them prepare dishes and we were not bombarded by any smells of the kitchen or swinging doors, just the vista. The food was wonderful and arrived very quickly, in fact a little too quickly, we had to ask for a break before we ordered our desserts. Well presented dishes, lovely taste and imaginative textures. I asked if my duck could be just pink, medium and it was perfect. The bread rolls were also tasty and different. We had a lovely evening and would definitely visit again."

  • "Lucky to get a restaurant week lunch reservation. Really appreciate that they do not dumb down the menu (many lesser places do). And the white chocolate surprise - WOW!!!"

  • "Fancy style of fine dining. Good ambience and good service. However the map inside the campus for restaurant is puzzling for first time comer. Once inside, the seating and courtesy is commendable. Only gripe is quantity of food served still leaves something to munch upon soon after leaving the place. A person with healthy appetite will feel hungry soon after some time. For the money charged, I felt the quantity lacked among all the fancy presentation."

  • "My friend and I went for dinner. Our coats were checked and we sat down. The servers were very attentive and helpful. They were knowledgable about the menu and have good suggestions. The food came out hot and everything was cooked perfectly. Overall it was a great experience."

  • "Going to the Culinary Institute's American Bounty is always a culinary experience that does not disappoint. The food is exceptional! Service varies as the wait staff consists of students in training, so depending on where in their training/school program they are service may be fair to exceptional. This is a teaching restaurant for future chefs, and food industry professionals, so one should go with an open mind. However, always be prepared for an amazing food experience. I also appreciate that a good deal of the ingredients used are local. Also a plus is the beautiful Hudson valley surroundings, and walking around the Culinary Campus is always a treat."

  • "The excitement of the students preparing and serving the food makes this place very special. You will enjoy unusual combination of tastes, incredible desserts paired with the eagerness of the students to describe every detail you are interested in. If you have a special occasion or want to treat someone out of town, this is the place."

  • "This was my first time to the school and the restaurant and I will say it won't be the last. The ambiance was wonderful and inviting. As luck would have it, our wait staff attending to my table were both from Connecticut as are we. It just happened to be a coincidence but it made the night that much more enjoyable. They both were extremely informative and proud of their school. I can't believe I haven't even gotten to the meal yet! The food ....ahh the food. It is to hard for me to put into words the flavors, the sensations, the textures of the food. It has to be experienced is all I can say! The entire night was an experience one should be part of! Thank you and we will be back soon!"

  • "We have not eaten at the CIA restaurants in a while but we decided to treat ourselves. When we arrived we were warmly greeted and shown to a table that was not what we wanted so they gave us another that we liked better. We ordered from the prixe fixe menu and had a very pleasant first course, although we were never offered bread. We had white wine with our appetizers and I asked for a glass of red with my entree, which was brought over right away. Our waiter was very earnest but not very accomplished however the biggest problems I had were with the pacing with long service delays between courses and being served coffee that was too cool to drink. While the food was good it was not exceptional and the service was not what we expected."

  • "We drove an hour and a half to get there, but the experience was worth it. The food was very good, not the best we've ever had, but pretty good nonetheless. Our waiter, a retired Air Force pilot, was very friendly and attentive. It is a beautiful and romantic place and I will plan to go back."

  • "We started 3 years ago with Escoffier, then did De'Medici, this year American Bounty. I cannot say enough good things about our experiences. We were a group of 8 one is my 87 year old darling aunt. The food is always amazing with tastes being mingled that you would never think to do but are glad they did. The presentations are photo worthy. You come away with a smile that lasts for a long time as you remember taste, aroma and presentation. Happy dining!"

  • "The restaurant is student run, this means that it is always a little different each time you go. The servers were excellent, but the kitchen made a couple mistakes. It could have been a lot better, but it was still a very enjoyable experience."

  • "Our meal arrived at different times, the food was just ok and certainly not a good value. Our servers were pleasant and attentive, but woefully unprepared. Really Disappointing. The corn chowder was silly, salads ...well hokum. For the price, i would have expected better quality."

  • "The American "Bounty Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY never fails to live up to its reputation for an excellent menu and great atmosphere. The Hudson Valley Restaurant Week prefix was most certainly a bargain. This is a teaching environment, so there may be blips from time to time, but for the most part the students are all eager to please and to excel at their tasks. We had the pork chops, which were moist and tender. 4 of us actually shared 8 appetizers rather than order dessert (which was part of the prefix). The cheese plate was exceptional. And, like all CIA restaurants, the bread is mouthwatering."
