A word from Ame
Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani as chefs and co-owners of Terra Restaurant in St. Helena, have brought their sense of taste and style to Ame Restaurant. Ame offers a relaxed yet elegant dining experience.

Guests will be welcomed to the intimate, L-shaped dining room by rich mesquite wood floors and striking surroundings. The interior of the restaurant includes a custom designed raw bar, a stunning red lacquered wall, and the restaurant’s signature “red table,” a five-foot square table. The menu showcases seasonal New American cuisine, with a blending of flavors from southern France, northern Italy and Japan. Guests can select from raw treatments from the
raw bar, such as crudo and tartare, as well as a range of appetizer and entree plates, and an assortment of artisan cheese and desserts.

Was told after sitting down for our 9:30 reservation that we had 10 minutes to quickly order before they closed the kitchen. Felt rushed, drinks came out of order of the meal. Meal arrived and felt like staff was waiting over us to hurry us out. Should have just hit up a walk out sushi joint. Food was decent, but wouldn't recommend. Next time when I stay at the St. Regis I'll eat offsite.

Looking for a place while in for a conference. Worked down the list of notable places, price not really a consideration. Couldn't get a last minute reservation anywhere except here for 6 people. Bar was fun and open in the St. Regis lobby. Drinks served adroitly and from a fine list. Moving to dining area, place was about half full at 8pm on a friday night. Should have known. Overall, food was so so. I am writing this 2 days after and am trying to remember what we had. And for ~$300/couple, there are better options. Next time, will not wait to make last minute reservation. Also ate at Bourbon steak and La Folie this trip and felt like it was money better spent, about $300-400/couple.

We have dined at Ame three time and it has been consistently excellent each time. The service is impeccable and the food both unique and superbly prepared. In addition to their full bar Ame's beverage list includes a wide selection of sake, wine and beer. Ame is extremely attentive to the needs of its customers. They always ask about food allergies or special requests. My wife is glutton intolerant and the waiter not only makes sure her selections are glutton free but personally inspects each dish to avoid any accidental glutton inclusions.

I scheduled this reservation weeks in advance and made sure to leave at least two hours for dining for four of us. We had an event to go to afterwards. 2 of us had an appetizer & entree and the other 2 had the 4-course-special for $90 each. The Entrees were good but the 4 courses were not so great (except the soup) and they were slow and tiny (even for a course menu). In fact, they kept bringing us "distraction drinks" (that we didn't like or want) because it was taking so long. They kept apologizing, which was nice, but we were late for our event by an hour 1/2! Dinner took over 3 1/2 hours for 4 people. I like to dine but that's ridiculous! If I spend $500 I expect much better quality and service. They didn't even offer to comp anything.

We had a special night and found this special place. The raw bar offering was exquisite, as were the fish special and lobster and cuddle fish. Our only disappointment was the lack of any tasty chocolate finish. Hopefully that will be fixed.

Robert de Niro loved Nobu's black cod in miso. Chef Sone uses shiso. Sweeter. Bright. I prefer savory miso. My date (lovely wife) loved the Hiro choice. Both are perfect. Server Tommy was spot on with all recommendations. I have never been helped by better. Of course dessert by Chef Lissa Romani was astonishing. I wonder what that power couple talk about.

simply put; customer service doesnt know how to handle a dissapointed customer. I wasnt told about the specifics of cancellation policy over phone when i added a second reservation (on top of existing opentable booking). The representative told me that they `assumed` I know. His unprofessional, agressive, NOT-solution but conflict oriented approach was dissapointing. I represent a big multi-national with significant client interatction activity in SF downtown and would never EVER consider AME as a viable option only due to this lack of professionalism. Btw - he told me that his manager would get back to me and guess what? they never did...

The food was quite good, but I expected more from such a well-reviewed restaurant. The atmosphere was negatively affected by a huge conference in town that seemed to take over everything, including Ame. Our table wasn't available until about 30 minutes after our reserved time, so we had to wait in the packed lounge and fight our way up to the bar and shout over the crowd just to get a drink while we waited. We had informed the restaurant we were celebrating a very special occasion, so the wait was unfortunate and we were a bit disappointed that our table didn't seem special (although we never get our hopes up too much for that). The dining room was freezing; even my partner in a wool suit was cold. So it was disappointing overall.

I took my out of town family to enjoy dinner because Ame has been a favorite of mine. Methinks new management (think MBA DEGREE FOCUSED ON COST WITH NO UNDERSTANDING OF BRAND) has taken charge. Too bad. Food is good quality but presentation is not good and service has diminished. Servers are not well trained like they were before. I asked about the origin of the Sake the server recommended, and she was clueless. One would think if she recommended it, she would have good knowledge about it. My partner and I have been regulars at Ame, but probably will not return.

I was in San Francisco for a large event. I wanted a break from the crowds, noise, etc, and I wanted some great food. So I discovered Ame that was like 2 blocks from my hotel. I had the tasting menu. The service was outstanding. The server had asked me if I had any dietary preferences, and I mentioned that I should not have raw shellfish due to some auto-immune issues. A person brought an Amuse to the table, a raw scallop, the server saw them delivering it to me and basically ran to the table to let me know it was raw (I think it had been torched on top so it did not appear to be raw), took it away, and I got a new amuse within maybe 3 minutes. Every course was outstanding.

Sat at the bar first. Had "the best martini ever" (the actual name). Our bartender was fantastic... Thought it was a ridiculous price, but OMG soooo delish! Appetizers included ceviche, and a dish with cuddle noodles and sea urchin and a quail egg. Can't even remember what else was in it - it was unbelievable. Sake marinated Black cod for dinner, for sure. I would order the exact same thing next time. Service in the restaurant was also wonderful. Our waitress recommended a bottle of wine from Washington - we were hesitant, but it was perfect and continued to open and please. Overall five stars. Can't wait to go back.

Ambience: Was expecting quiet elegance; instead the dining room is dated/shabby and the noise level from the hotel lobby and open kitchen is anything but Zen (Zagat?) Food: I had the same entrée as at Terra, and the difference was astonishing: Terra 5 Stars, Ame' 2 Stars. and to paraphrase a recent Michael Bauer review, the dessert/pastry chef doesn't like sweets. Service was fine, although the wait between courses was too long.

Dinner was very tasty and the scallops with caviar and unagi topping was excellent, only to be topped by the signature black code with shrimp dumplings. Only small down side was that they seemed to be having difficulty with a larger group and handling multiple credit cards or splitting in any manner. Overall this small downside was significantly outweighed but an excellent evening.

I was pleasantly surprised by the food here. I was concerned that being inside the St. Regis hotel would make this place stuffy and too posh, but they were warm and friendly and provided great service. The food was fusion Japanese but did not go too far and try too hard to be eclectic so it was great.

I would say that for what I paid, the meal was mostly uneventful. My "special" sashimi dish lacked any flavor surprise; each individual portion, though prepared differently, tasted like the other. When you pay $350 for dinner you expect something special. The only thing special about the meal here was the bill. And, excuse me, but $140 for a bottle of Zinfandel is a joke.

Our meal at Ame was simply stunning from start to finish; the quality of the food was bettered only by the impeccable service. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and very focused on ensuring that we had the best dishes and the best possible experience, and was keen to recommend things to our taste, and he was not wrong. We both had the Broiled Sake Marinated Alaskan Black cod & shrimp dumplings in shiso broth, which was divine; incredible flavors, coupled with mouth-tingling textures. For dessert, I had the Summer Berry Hand Pie, which were worth the $100 per head cover alone - I'll definitely be going back for those.
