A word from Ame
Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani as chefs and co-owners of Terra Restaurant in St. Helena, have brought their sense of taste and style to Ame Restaurant. Ame offers a relaxed yet elegant dining experience.

Guests will be welcomed to the intimate, L-shaped dining room by rich mesquite wood floors and striking surroundings. The interior of the restaurant includes a custom designed raw bar, a stunning red lacquered wall, and the restaurant’s signature “red table,” a five-foot square table. The menu showcases seasonal New American cuisine, with a blending of flavors from southern France, northern Italy and Japan. Guests can select from raw treatments from the
raw bar, such as crudo and tartare, as well as a range of appetizer and entree plates, and an assortment of artisan cheese and desserts.

  • "The Maître d greeted me by name and acknowledged the special occasion. Ambiance was very dignified, without being ostentatious. Wait staff was very attentive without being obtrusive, very well informed and helpful. The sommelier recommended some delicious sakes to accompany our mostly seafood meal. All of the food was amazing. Lissa's Staff Meal made me want to work there, just to eat this dish regularly. The Tataki of Hokkaido scallops melted in your mouth. The sashimi salad artfully featured a pile of hijiki topped with shredded bonito and accompanied by bits of seaweed and tobiko. The main was the broiled sake-marinated Alaskan black cod. Even the warm bread rolls were amazing. Yum!"

The restaurant is quiet enough to have a conversation during dinner which is a rare treat in SF.the location is perfect if you have a performance at Yerba Center for the Arts . The parking is difficult and theSt Regis parking with validation is over $20 ,, not a welcome cost after an $$$$ meal."

  • "Food & presentation were good on a technical level (except the bits of steak on the 'sampler' menu which were cooked to perfection, but used surprisingly tough meet). Going to a Michelin-starred place, you might expect to see an amuse-buche or little sorbet thrown, in particular if a table has a mix of 5-course sampler and 3-corse a-la-carte orders - als: none of such embellishments were offered. Similarly, at this level you'd expect an espresso to come with a little something, such as an amaretto cookie, or a little chocolate. Again: none of the above. Service was attentive, perhaps a bit fast for my liking (except for bread rolls, which we had to ask for). So, overall, good technique, but not a love-affair with food on our night."

  • "Tuna starter was bland and cold. Seafood soup was cream heavy and tasted a little out of place in what's ostensibly a Japanese meal. But tasted good. Next was the black cod in the soy broth, which was nice but lacked complexity. Steak was nice if boring, but the fried sweetbreads were awful. Greasy and underseasoned. Dessert course was a huckleberry pie that was mostly dry. For $90 I expected more hits. They have a nice sake list at least."

I had black cod in a wonderful broth, just wonderful. Second, we requested a quiet table and they went out of their way to make sure we had just that. The restaurant has only moderate noise to begin with, but our table was in a quiet corner. The decor is gorgeous -- elegant and quiet but not stuffy. And last, the service was gracious and attentive without being at all intrusive. Just a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for exceptional food and an elegant evening."

The Broiled Sake Marinated Black Cod and the Scallops w/Uni were outstanding. We were seated at a square table large enough to accommodate us comfortably in a secluded corner of the restaurant. We had a wonderful meal, spent quality time together and had a great experience. Thank you!"

The Chawan Mushi is better than any version I have had elsewhere, including Japan. Dishes are delicious, impeccably flavor balanced, and a delight to the eye. There is an extensive tasting menu, but thankfully, they also offer a quite extensive a la carte menu. We frequently bring old bottles from our cellar, and they are handled with great care and skill. And the cost is less than several other top level SF restaurants. Everything considered, my choice for best elegant dining in the Bay Area"

  • "We chose Ame based on a couple of great experiences at Terra in St. Helena several years ago. While the room was elegant, the service attentive and the food totally acceptable it fell short of our expectations. First, they were all out of Glenfiddich ( which seemed strange based on its popularity) . Second, the voluminous wine list ( bursting the seams of the binder) contained very few bottles priced under $100 and the " by the glass offerings" (starting at $17) included no Cabernet , merlot or Zinfandel and were from lesser known wineries. We stuck to Balvenie. The main courses of duck and pork chop were excellent and beautifully presented, if a little pricy. Doubt if we would repeat based on the variety and quality available in SF."

  • "We were excited to celebrate our 41st Anniversary privately at this contemporary restaurant. It was full house but we were quite promptly attended. The cocktails we ordered, KIR (a popular white wine drink with creme de cassis), did not taste right, worst still with an added slide of lemon skin. The foods received a mixed ratings by us. Potato Gnocchi in Duck Sugo with Forest Mushrooms can be presented better and the taste could be more creative. The Grilled Brandt Family Ranch NY Strip Steak was charred and became bitter, while the Ravioli pastry skin could be softer and the Potato Fonduta and Bone Marrow lack imagination. My set dinner was good. The sea urchin with scallop dish was the best of the night."

  • "Ame was one of the restaurants on our must-try list for quite some time and we're glad we dined there this past weekend. While we had a fine dinner. The uni and cuttle fish noodles (Lissa's Staff Meal) were awesome as was the delicious broth with custard! Both very unique & must-tries! However, as a whole, we can only say that about 1/3 of the meal left us feeling "OMG, we have to come back &bring our friends!" because the rest was, well, unexciting. Tasty, yes. Well executed, yes again. Vibrant, WOW, this is worth every $ and more, unfortunately, no. Ame's menu is very safe. Good food, competently executed, just an underwhelming when compared to Rich Table, Cotogna, La Ciccia or State Bird where you can't wait to try the next dish."
