A word from Ame
Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani as chefs and co-owners of Terra Restaurant in St. Helena, have brought their sense of taste and style to Ame Restaurant. Ame offers a relaxed yet elegant dining experience.

Guests will be welcomed to the intimate, L-shaped dining room by rich mesquite wood floors and striking surroundings. The interior of the restaurant includes a custom designed raw bar, a stunning red lacquered wall, and the restaurant’s signature “red table,” a five-foot square table. The menu showcases seasonal New American cuisine, with a blending of flavors from southern France, northern Italy and Japan. Guests can select from raw treatments from the
raw bar, such as crudo and tartare, as well as a range of appetizer and entree plates, and an assortment of artisan cheese and desserts.

Diner Reviews
  • "I met my advisor for dinner at Ame, and had a wonderful experience here. The food was delightful, ample portions, and the servers were polite and competent without being stuffy. Overall, a wonderful place to visit for good food, wine, and conversation."

  • "The food was generally good. Especially lobster. The taste of Ame menu was totally enough for a man."

  • "We hosted our son and his boss for dinner. The food was fabulous, the service attentive but not intrusive and we could easily have a conversation."

  • "I would say that for what I paid, the meal was mostly uneventful. My "special" sashimi dish lacked any flavor surprise; each individual portion, though prepared differently, tasted like the other. When you pay $350 for dinner you expect something special. The only thing special about the meal here was the bill. And, excuse me, but $140 for a bottle of Zinfandel is a joke."

  • "Our meal at Ame was simply stunning from start to finish; the quality of the food was bettered only by the impeccable service. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and very focused on ensuring that we had the best dishes and the best possible experience, and was keen to recommend things to our taste, and he was not wrong. We both had the Broiled Sake Marinated Alaskan Black cod & shrimp dumplings in shiso broth, which was divine; incredible flavors, coupled with mouth-tingling textures. For dessert, I had the Summer Berry Hand Pie, which were worth the $100 per head cover alone - I'll definitely be going back for those."

  • "Was very impressed with the service as the waiter was attentive but not obtrusive and made helpful menu and beverage suggestions. The food was excellent , had beautiful presentation and was served hot !"

  • "This was a special occasion for us, we hadn't seen ea. other in several weeks and we wanted to begin our evening w a romantic dinner. Ame delivered on this one! Everything to perfection. The scallop sushi topped w uni was amazing and the roasted black cod w shrimp ravioli cooked to the point of bliss. Sitting so delicately in the middle of a breathtaking richly flavored broth. We finished w the berry hand pies w buttermilk ice cream. I have never had a more flaky delight."

  • "Taste what the chef loves! It was great. Multiple smaller plates. 6 courses. Nice diversity. Marvelous flavors and ingredients with terrific wine pairings. Enjoy!!"

  • "Tried the tasting menu with wine pairings. Perfect amount of food. Attentive service. Squash soup delightful. Black cod was perfect. Excellent dinner."

  • "Looked for a Micheline-rated restaurant and found this. We got very disappointed. The food was average, so was the service. We expected more japanese tastes. The tasting-manu was 3 dishes and a dessert"

  • "Amazing high end Japanese "like" food. amazingly fresh fish."

  • "I don't have a foodie's vocabulary, but I have eaten at plenty of interesting restaurants with creative fare, but this one stands out far from the rest. Just examine the menu and assume each dish is exquisitely delicious and that you will savor each bite to the last, yet not likely to identify all the preparation methods or ingredients. The extensive wine and especially the sake lists are also quite a treat."

  • "Though Ame is not classified as a Japanese restaurant, the taste of the foods is a genuine Japanese food."

  • "We ordered the taste menu with wine pair. Food are very good but not the level that surprised us. Price is fair. Service was just okay."

  • "On my first and as yet only visit, I had the tasting menu with wine pairings. Trout sashimi was creamy in texture with tongue-loving flavor. The much remarked upon black cod came in a light salty broth -- very good, floatingly tender, but not the kind of thing to divide your life into Before and After. The pork "chop" -- it was boneless -- was perfectly cooked, juicy and light pink, and came with a mellow mustard that had just the right amount of bite. The desserts sounded too sweet, so I went for a brandy; without being asked, the waiter took the price of dessert off the bill. $222. For one. As far as I can tell -- I'm from out of town -- this is the best restaurant within a large radius. Highly recommended."

  • "I have dined at Ame for 3 times over the years and unfortunately I have to say it gets worse every time. The server has a really bad attitude and the food was not amazing. Spend your money on somewhere else. "

  • "Absolutely amazing! Loved every minute of it. And the prices are decent if compared to most of San Francisco's restaurants. "

  • "Ame is one of my favorite San Francisco restaurants and I try to dine there every time I come to town. The total experience was fantastic and especially for special occasions. "

  • "Ame is outstanding as a dining experience. We love returning when we get the chance. We find it hard not to order the mushroom soup with abalone, amberjack ceviche, and black cod entree every time."

  • "Althoug the food was really good, the service was amateur and dull. I"ve never seen so many mistakes made in one single meal. By far, the worse benefit for the amount of usd spent. "

  • "We chose the tasting menu, and the experience was really positive! Perfectly treated high quality ingredients, paired with a sublte and elegant service. The Broiled Sake Marinated Alaskan Black Cod & Shrimp Dumplings in Shiso Broth is a superb dish! "

  • "Consistently excellent food and correct service. I do miss wine steward John Paul. "

  • "Our group of five had the tasting menu - it took about 20 minutes for anyone to inquire about our order after our entire party arrived. The food was tasty, but the wine pairings were pedestrian - with the except of a wine paired with a duck course, which was so harsh that we actually asked for a substitute wine. To the server's credit, he was quick to respond to that request. The sea bass dish was excellent, the duck was a bit tough and slightly overcooked. It was not the experience I would expect given the price point. "

  • "Decent quality of food but nothing all that special. It certainly wasn't the best steak I've ever had and the pork was just alright. I didn't like the attitude the server gave me when I refused to order desert! We had to box our food and I clearly had no room to order more so what's up with rolling your eyes? Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. "

  • "The Atlantic black cod was wonderful and the broth it was served with was exceptionally flavorful."

  • "The Maître d greeted me by name and acknowledged the special occasion. Ambiance was very dignified, without being ostentatious. Wait staff was very attentive without being obtrusive, very well informed and helpful. The sommelier recommended some delicious sakes to accompany our mostly seafood meal. All of the food was amazing. Lissa's Staff Meal made me want to work there, just to eat this dish regularly. The Tataki of Hokkaido scallops melted in your mouth. The sashimi salad artfully featured a pile of hijiki topped with shredded bonito and accompanied by bits of seaweed and tobiko. The main was the broiled sake-marinated Alaskan black cod. Even the warm bread rolls were amazing. Yum!"

  • "My only suggestion for improvement would be to Serve the dishes with more time in between. We had the 5 course meny andcould have enjoyed 30 more minutes of the ambience. Overall thanks for an imaginative and well delivered experience. Regards 40+ Michelin star eater"

  • "AME is a really good restaurant. It's not fabulous for vegetarians. It might be nice to have a few more options for food. But the service is professional, knowledgeable and unobtrusive, the wine selection brilliant and not unreasonable. The sushi dishes were just incredible. I noticed too the option to eat at the sushi bar, I bet this is a really nice option for business travelers."

  • "We came her to celebrate a notable birthday. It was recommended by a "foodie" in the SF area and was everything that I hoped (and expected) from a restaurant with kind of reputation it has. Everything was perfect - food was lovely, wine suggestions were perfect both from quality and price perspectives, service was attentive but not intrusive. A return visit the next time i am in the area is called for..."

  • "We loved our meal....the portions were a tiny bit small, however we found the dessert of panna cotta, a bit runny....HOWEVER everything else was perfect...our server was amazing!! Really made our night, they did NOT forget it was our anniversary."

  • "I ordered an exotic-sounding dish, and it was too exotic. The chef is very inventive with everything, so the exotic proved too inventive for me. Next time, I will order something that sounds simpler. My wife's fish came with a melange of slivered vegetables that was so physically unattractive that she did not eat it."

  • "Food is superb . Inventive with an Asian fusion. Definitely a special occasion spot as it is located inSt Regis Hotel. The "hot" bar is in the hotel adjacent to the restaurant . The restaurant is quiet enough to have a conversation during dinner which is a rare treat in SF.the location is perfect if you have a performance at Yerba Center for the Arts . The parking is difficult and theSt Regis parking with validation is over $20 ,, not a welcome cost after an $$$$ meal."

  • "Food & presentation were good on a technical level (except the bits of steak on the 'sampler' menu which were cooked to perfection, but used surprisingly tough meet). Going to a Michelin-starred place, you might expect to see an amuse-buche or little sorbet thrown, in particular if a table has a mix of 5-course sampler and 3-corse a-la-carte orders - als: none of such embellishments were offered. Similarly, at this level you'd expect an espresso to come with a little something, such as an amaretto cookie, or a little chocolate. Again: none of the above. Service was attentive, perhaps a bit fast for my liking (except for bread rolls, which we had to ask for). So, overall, good technique, but not a love-affair with food on our night."
