A word from Ame
Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani as chefs and co-owners of Terra Restaurant in St. Helena, have brought their sense of taste and style to Ame Restaurant. Ame offers a relaxed yet elegant dining experience.

Guests will be welcomed to the intimate, L-shaped dining room by rich mesquite wood floors and striking surroundings. The interior of the restaurant includes a custom designed raw bar, a stunning red lacquered wall, and the restaurant’s signature “red table,” a five-foot square table. The menu showcases seasonal New American cuisine, with a blending of flavors from southern France, northern Italy and Japan. Guests can select from raw treatments from the
raw bar, such as crudo and tartare, as well as a range of appetizer and entree plates, and an assortment of artisan cheese and desserts.

Diner Reviews
  • "Decent quality of food but nothing all that special. It certainly wasn't the best steak I've ever had and the pork was just alright. I didn't like the attitude the server gave me when I refused to order desert! We had to box our food and I clearly had no room to order more so what's up with rolling your eyes? Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. "

  • "The Atlantic black cod was wonderful and the broth it was served with was exceptionally flavorful."

  • "The Maître d greeted me by name and acknowledged the special occasion. Ambiance was very dignified, without being ostentatious. Wait staff was very attentive without being obtrusive, very well informed and helpful. The sommelier recommended some delicious sakes to accompany our mostly seafood meal. All of the food was amazing. Lissa's Staff Meal made me want to work there, just to eat this dish regularly. The Tataki of Hokkaido scallops melted in your mouth. The sashimi salad artfully featured a pile of hijiki topped with shredded bonito and accompanied by bits of seaweed and tobiko. The main was the broiled sake-marinated Alaskan black cod. Even the warm bread rolls were amazing. Yum!"

  • "My only suggestion for improvement would be to Serve the dishes with more time in between. We had the 5 course meny andcould have enjoyed 30 more minutes of the ambience. Overall thanks for an imaginative and well delivered experience. Regards 40+ Michelin star eater"

  • "I would not say the taste is super authentic. But, it tastes interesting."

  • "AME is a really good restaurant. It's not fabulous for vegetarians. It might be nice to have a few more options for food. But the service is professional, knowledgeable and unobtrusive, the wine selection brilliant and not unreasonable. The sushi dishes were just incredible. I noticed too the option to eat at the sushi bar, I bet this is a really nice option for business travelers."

  • "We loved our meal....the portions were a tiny bit small, however we found the dessert of panna cotta, a bit runny....HOWEVER everything else was perfect...our server was amazing!! Really made our night, they did NOT forget it was our anniversary."

  • "I ordered an exotic-sounding dish, and it was too exotic. The chef is very inventive with everything, so the exotic proved too inventive for me. Next time, I will order something that sounds simpler. My wife's fish came with a melange of slivered vegetables that was so physically unattractive that she did not eat it."

  • "Food is superb . Inventive with an Asian fusion. Definitely a special occasion spot as it is located inSt Regis Hotel. The "hot" bar is in the hotel adjacent to the restaurant . The restaurant is quiet enough to have a conversation during dinner which is a rare treat in SF.the location is perfect if you have a performance at Yerba Center for the Arts . The parking is difficult and theSt Regis parking with validation is over $20 ,, not a welcome cost after an $$$$ meal."

  • "Got what I paid for:) Great food and sake was yummy Restaurant was small enough to be intimate and large enough to not be loud"

  • "Food & presentation were good on a technical level (except the bits of steak on the 'sampler' menu which were cooked to perfection, but used surprisingly tough meet). Going to a Michelin-starred place, you might expect to see an amuse-buche or little sorbet thrown, in particular if a table has a mix of 5-course sampler and 3-corse a-la-carte orders - als: none of such embellishments were offered. Similarly, at this level you'd expect an espresso to come with a little something, such as an amaretto cookie, or a little chocolate. Again: none of the above. Service was attentive, perhaps a bit fast for my liking (except for bread rolls, which we had to ask for). So, overall, good technique, but not a love-affair with food on our night."

  • "We had a lovely time at Ame for Valentine's Day. Really interesting and delicious food, nicely prepared, and pretty good service. Great wine list. We'll be back."

  • "One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. The food is always perfectly prepared and presented. However, the service, which used to be exquisite, is now only good. Perhaps there is a change in management?"

  • "Tuna starter was bland and cold. Seafood soup was cream heavy and tasted a little out of place in what's ostensibly a Japanese meal. But tasted good. Next was the black cod in the soy broth, which was nice but lacked complexity. Steak was nice if boring, but the fried sweetbreads were awful. Greasy and underseasoned. Dessert course was a huckleberry pie that was mostly dry. For $90 I expected more hits. They have a nice sake list at least."

  • "Really a delightful meal. Tasting menu included both items, and pairings, that I wouldn't otherwise have ordered, and it was all very consistent and very good."

  • "This was our second visit to this Japanese fusion restaurant and we thought the food was very good. We appreciated the sake menu which was extensive,"

  • "We had the tasting menu with the wine pairings and it was definitely the way to go as we got to try five dishes without overeating. The wine selections complimented the dishes (including dessert) very nicely. We asked for (and received) a list of the wines that were served. It was a delicious and delightful evening!"

  • "The service was slow for the prices and the quality of cooking weak"

  • "The food was excellent as always. Signature tuna poke and Alaskan black cod did not disappoint. Only issue was that our waiter charged us for the wrong amount at the end up of the meal. That shouldn't happen at a restaurant of this caliber."

  • "quiet,sedate,contemporary,refined...quite expensive The black cod is outstanding and coupled with a crisp Sancerre, a memorable combination."

  • "Ame is a chic, acoustically harsh restaurant that appears to be more of a business dinner venue. Service and sashimi was good to very good, and the sake list was excellent. Bread was attractive but tasteless."

  • "This restaurant was absolutely the best we've eaten at in at least a year, and we travel widely and try to eat in good restaurants everywhere we go. First, the food was beyond delicious. I had black cod in a wonderful broth, just wonderful. Second, we requested a quiet table and they went out of their way to make sure we had just that. The restaurant has only moderate noise to begin with, but our table was in a quiet corner. The decor is gorgeous -- elegant and quiet but not stuffy. And last, the service was gracious and attentive without being at all intrusive. Just a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for exceptional food and an elegant evening."

  • "Service and food was excellent. We had a party of six and some of us had the tasting menu 'A Taste of Ame' with wine pairing while others selected from the menu. The Broiled Sake Marinated Black Cod and the Scallops w/Uni were outstanding. We were seated at a square table large enough to accommodate us comfortably in a secluded corner of the restaurant. We had a wonderful meal, spent quality time together and had a great experience. Thank you!"

  • "We were very disappointed in our dining experience. The service was substandard and the food not fit for a michelin star restaurant. In addition, the selection of the wines included in the wine pairing were less than adequate. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone deciding to dine at a michelin star restaurant."

  • "We celebrated a birthday, there were 6 of us, we had a wonderful table tucked away and were able to comfortably talk. The food is amazing. The Sake Marinated Black Cod was a favorite. All 6 of us raved about our meals. Just a perfect experience."

  • "Really exquisite food, served by charming people, in a chic setting. We celebrated our daughter's 30th here and were not disappointed in any way. If anything, the perfection of the food was downright intimidating. I only wish there had been something alive on the table...flower or plant, to remind me that the world out there is not as perfect. It was bizarre to see a full range of wardrobe choices among the diners, everything from camo tank tops to bespoke suits, so maybe we were the only ones dazzled by this gorgeous place."

  • "Ame delivers exquisite food, service and elegant ambience consistently over the past several years, and if anything, has improved. The Chawan Mushi is better than any version I have had elsewhere, including Japan. Dishes are delicious, impeccably flavor balanced, and a delight to the eye. There is an extensive tasting menu, but thankfully, they also offer a quite extensive a la carte menu. We frequently bring old bottles from our cellar, and they are handled with great care and skill. And the cost is less than several other top level SF restaurants. Everything considered, my choice for best elegant dining in the Bay Area"

  • "We chose Ame based on a couple of great experiences at Terra in St. Helena several years ago. While the room was elegant, the service attentive and the food totally acceptable it fell short of our expectations. First, they were all out of Glenfiddich ( which seemed strange based on its popularity) . Second, the voluminous wine list ( bursting the seams of the binder) contained very few bottles priced under $100 and the " by the glass offerings" (starting at $17) included no Cabernet , merlot or Zinfandel and were from lesser known wineries. We stuck to Balvenie. The main courses of duck and pork chop were excellent and beautifully presented, if a little pricy. Doubt if we would repeat based on the variety and quality available in SF."

  • "Excellent quality with plenty to share....so we did! Made the evening that much more enjoyable. Excellent selection of wines and sake that compliment the food well. Wine prices were reasonable for the quality."

  • "We were excited to celebrate our 41st Anniversary privately at this contemporary restaurant. It was full house but we were quite promptly attended. The cocktails we ordered, KIR (a popular white wine drink with creme de cassis), did not taste right, worst still with an added slide of lemon skin. The foods received a mixed ratings by us. Potato Gnocchi in Duck Sugo with Forest Mushrooms can be presented better and the taste could be more creative. The Grilled Brandt Family Ranch NY Strip Steak was charred and became bitter, while the Ravioli pastry skin could be softer and the Potato Fonduta and Bone Marrow lack imagination. My set dinner was good. The sea urchin with scallop dish was the best of the night."
