Diner Reviews
  • "Amber is on its way down. Among our friends in parties, more people are saying that they no longer like Amber at Santana Row. It is no longer considered good any more. Why you ask? 1) Food quality and menu are no longer good, 2) Buffet - no lamb, no beef prep, only two chickens and fish - my British guests were disappointed, 3) Desert table small and poor with unimaginative quick and cheap items 4) Service really bad - never got the drink I ordered, 5) Too crowded around buffet table seating, 6) Empty food containers not refilled quickly, I had to ask to fill them,"

  • "We started with the Tandoori sample platter and expected lot food for $19.99; it was disappointing to get two small pieces of chicken, two sheek kabab & two shrimp on a plate not a sizzling platter! The main entrees we ordered were butter chicken and lamb curry. Both were luke warm and not very spicy. The Onion Naan was bland!, however we really enjoyed the plain naan and my husband enjoyed theTaj Mahal beer. Over all food portions were not the worth price$$."

  • "Amber India in Santana Row is a nice mix of traditional Indian dishes and fusion dishes. It's nice to have a choice. The food is very tasty with the right amount of spicing and is well presented. The staff is always willing to make adjustments and accommodate the special needs of patrons. They are well trained, very courteous, and knowledgeable about the cuisine served. The wine list is OK with wines that go well with Indian food. It is a little pricey but is a nice place for a special meal for a special occasion."

  • "All our food was very good from a flavor perspective. Very good even. I have to take stars off because it all seems over cooked to me. To the point of being dry and tough. I had lamb ka-bobs, wow what great taste and flavor...dry meat. What a waste. My wife had a fish, specific name I don't remember, that was again very flavorful and yet again, over cooked. Not sure what was going on, but you'd think for a Friday night, they'd have enough turn-over to keep the food moving and cooked correctly. Almost seemed as if they had it all pre-cooked and just keeping it warm until ordered and served."

  • "This restaurant has outstanding service, a very creative Indian menu, & great vegetarian options. The food was also very good. This is not your typical neighborhood Indian restaurant. This is special."

  • "great food / great service / great ambiance / great place"

  • "My husband and I are vegetarian foodies. We decided to sit outside for dinner while other diners sat inside. We ordered an appetizer, two dishes, rice, naan. We had to ask twice for our appetizer and when it was brought out it was the wrong appetizer. They eventually brought out the correct one and comp'd us for the appetizer. The dishes were good but not for the price. We will most likely not be going back there."

  • "Excellent dinner with my reservation being recognized and an excellent table available on arrival. Wait staff were just right and had food and service available without interrupting conversation."

  • "Amber in Santana Row is one our three favorite Indian restaurants in the bay area besides Mynt (Campbell) and Sakoon (Mountain View). Every dish has its unique taste spiced to your requested liking. I have taken my office VPs to this restaurant and they loved the food here. They have a good bar too adding to the ambiance of the place. We look forward to continue visiting Amber on special occasions."

  • "We love Amber India. The food is always delicious (although we've never tried the buffet at lunch) and the staff friendly, courteous, and efficient."

  • "Great food, great bar and a great atmosphere... We loved this place!"

  • "The food was great, tasty, but very pricey and definitely not worth the overall experience. The service was great as well, everything brought out at the ideal time. The most disappointing was the atmosphere. For that price, eating at Santana Row, I expected a well put together decor. It was extremely cheap looking, the bathroom was literally falling apart and the whole restaurant is in need of a major makeover. It was a lil distracting and brought attention away from the other positive attributes of the dining experience. I would recommend the food, but maybe for pick up."

  • "This was for valentine's day special dinner. Even though this was a pre-fixe dinner menu, it took the restaurant an hour after sitting u down at the table to bring our first course - which was a soup. Food was good/excellent but from a service aspect, it was disappointing. They also allowed guests with babies/toddlers which resulted in some very noisy situations that could have been avoided if they set the policy appropriately, especially when they are charging high price for this special dinner."

  • "I had heard good things about this place. But I didn't imagine it would be that good. It was a prix fixe menu for $55 and we included the wine pairing for both of us. Well worth it in every respect - from the soup to the medjool date dessert. The service was spot on. Well trained and attentive staff. Jeffy was our server. We appreciated his attentiveness. The bussers were non-descript and we thanked them for being so, oddly. We will definitely return. The owners certainly showed their expectations were high from the food to the service. Both entrees were incredible; the Paneer in an incredible korma type sauce and the asparagus broccollini. Both great veg choices and I hope they are both on the regular menu for the next time."

  • "I have frequently taken friends and business associates here for lunch. It is a good way to introduce people who are not familiar with Indian food to a variety of different Indian flavors and dishes. The service here has always been impeccable and they are quick on the ball with keeping drinks filled, making sure the naan basket is full ect..Everyone I bring here always has a great experience and wants to return!!"

  • "We have been to Amber many times and have almost always been very satisfied with the food, service and the ambience. Will definitely keep going. It is great for taking guests who enjoy Indian cuisine."

  • "The ambience was good, though it was a bit noisy there. We ordered one chicken and one lamb entree. Those tasted mediocre, some very cheap restaurants in bay area serve better and tastier non veg. Not worth the money spent here."

  • "Had a slight cold I was fighting and I'm pretty sure the lamb vindaloo knocked it out. Did need the riata but it was worth it. The options are great when you need to eat healthy."

  • "DELICIOUS FOOD AND THE WAITER WAS SO ENGAGED AND MADE THE EXPERIENCE THAT MUCH MORE MEMORABLE."

  • "The food was not good and buffet setting not convenient with grill outside. Staff was very courteous in making space for our large group."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "Food was great- we had chicken, shrimp, and vegetable dishes- all impressive flavors - but the cake (to celebrate a birthday) was so bad and dry that no one at our table would eat it. Cocktails were okay. Service needs a lot of attention. Waiters spent more time talking to each other than the customers. After waiting patiently, we ended up having to flag people down several times during the cocktail and meal service. It wasn't a busy night so attentive service could have been easily attainable."

  • "The food was very good, my entire party loved what we ate. Just an FYI, the menu is designed around family style, we didn't know that going in and it doesn't say anywhere. One thing to note though is that it took about 15 mins before our server came over to even check on us. He was polite, but very quick to the point and tried to spend as little time with us as possible."

  • "The food is pricier than your casual Indian restaurants in the valley but tastes fresher and spicier. The menu offers more variety than the run of the mill. It's also cleaner than most, which is unfortunately a reality. If you don't want to go to Palo Alto/SF for a nice, fun dining experience with Indian food and cocktails, this is the place to come. As a side note, we need amazing Indian restaurants here to rival the ones in NYC! We can spend our IT salaries on this coast too!"

  • "Great upscale Indian in Santana Row. We've enjoyed it for many years. Nice ambiance and generally good service, with high-quality Indian and Indian fusion food. Nice ambiance but also kid-friendly."

  • "One of the worst Indian food I had. Normally I hate Indian Buffets. But for Christmas eve, this was one of the worst dinners I ever had."

  • "bad everything, bad food, rude and unapologetic on top of that - service, extremely overpriced food, too many people but still missing so many basic things like getting food on time. After my last experience there I don't think I can convince myself to go there again."

  • "I went to go see a friend of mine who had returned from South Africa after spending a year teaching English. This was the first time that I went to Santana Row and this restaurant. My friend did all of the ordering since this was more of an fine dining Indian Restaurant. We started the meal with some diver scallops which were really fantastic..they were dusted with some spices that I couldn't identify. We then went on to the main course where we had: Tandoori Salmon; Baingan Mussallam (Baby Egg plant), Chettinad Paneer (Cottage cheese with Chittinad spice), Lamb Roganhjosh (stewed lamb chunks...my favorite dish of the meal), Naan and Basmati Rice. We finished the meal with some Indian Creme Brulee and Ice Cream"

  • "We arrived early to our 6:30pm reservation about half an hour early, the restaurant had a good little crowd at that time. The front dinning room had ample of tables vacant and the middle dinning room was pretty empty The hostess said she was able to seat us early and ended up seating us in a dark corner in the middle dinning room. I turned and asked if we can be seated in the front dinning room she said with a stern 'No, those are for reservations' and walked away. Half an hour later there were still open tables up in the front dinning room. Even the bus boy was willing to move us. If she'sthe first person we interact with and had this type of service I definitely did not look forward to the the rest of the evening in that restaurant."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary with a marvelous dinner at Amber of India. We had to have the sea bass again because it's so good, but all the other dishes were new to us. And every one was great! The two wines we chose, from a decent variety available by the glass, were both excellent. And the service, by our waiter Abdo, was attentive and foresightful. We will go back, of course!"

  • "The standards here are always high and this was demonstrated again on Saturday. They changed the menu and I lost may favorite appetizer, the one wth Mushrooms and Filo pastery. Please bring it back."

  • "Their tandoori platter use to be fabulous...now it's just okay. We ordered some Lamb which was quite bland. Bill for 3 with 2 adults and one kid was 150 bucks with gratuity....food mediocre and service not so good."

  • "I have been to Amber often, but on Thanksgiving I shouldn't have come here. The usual great food was replaced by a higher price , "fancier" buffet. But turkey curry just didn't work. Stick to what you do best and I will be back. PS the dahl and salad were excellent."
